When you add a new contact in your Google Contacts through the web browser the contact is automatically added, by default, to the My contacts group.
The behavior was the same also on all smartphones I owned, including an LG Optimus One P500: whenever I added a new contact on the phone it was automatically added to the My contacts group.
This is a desired behavior because it lets you distinguish and clearly separate the contacts which you add, from the contacts which Gmail automatically adds to your contacts, in a special group called Other Contacts whenever you exchange some message with them.
This unfortunately doesn't happen with my LG G2 with the stock ROM: when I create a new contact on the phone, and choose to sync with my Google account, the contact is not automatically added to the My Contacts group but, quite confusingly, it is automatically added to the Other Contacts group. What's even worse, there seems to be no way to even manually add the new contact to the My Contacts group.
I think this is a major problem and I find it surprising no one has noticed it before. Am I missing something maybe?
If this is confirmed, how can I fix it? Is there a workaround to solve it?

Can't you just select the my contacts group when making a new contact? I tested on stock, aosp 4.44, and lp contact apps and they all allow me to select (and create) which group I wanted the new contact in. I didn't even have a my contacts group to start with...
This is certainly not a "major" problem, but I guess if you don't select which group you want, it would be inconvenient. I typically don't use the group feature, but I can see where it would be handy with projects or a large number of contacts.
I didn't test using a browser or a pc...

Unfortunately it's not possible because the "My Contacts" group does not show up in the groups list:

The My Contacts group is the default group for everybody's contact, that's the group where by default all your contacts go when you don't have groups, you don't need to create it and you cannot delete it. If you open your contacts in the browser you can see it:
As I wrote in the OP, that's the default group where the contacts which you manually add go. The contacts which Gmail automatically adds, whenever you exchange some messages with somebody who is not already in your contacts, go in another group called Other Contacts.
If you add a new contact on any smartphone the contact will be added automatically by default to the My Contacts group.
If you add a new contact on the LG G2 the contact will be added automatically by default to the Other Contacts group.

Well, I find it incredibly odd that I didn't have a my contacts group to begin with if it was a default group...Every contact that I've entered, I've had to manually assign a group, otherwise, they would go to other contacts group.
Edit: Nevermind, I see what you're saying. Looking at browser clarified. My contacts is a primary group and any group that you create is a secondary group under my contacts. Apparently the g2 defaults to other rather than my contacts primary unless you define which group manually.

hi, i have a dream ...and searched a long time for an app which can handle all things with contacts & phone:
and i needed in past ~12 different apps to have the same as dw contact manager can do..
(ebo birthday, call firewall, go sms, dialer one, etc..)
then i found as base the "DW CONTACT MANAGER", and the developer is very flexible and implemented all fixes, feature request in almost the same day - LOL
what i searched for:
Contacts
======
.) replacement for stock android "contacts"
.) handling for searching in all fields
.) multiple languages
.) managing MS exchange activesync contacts incl. groups (categories)
.) ringtones group-based
.) control of contact-events
(birthdays, because only in OL there are appointments made for contacts, which is complete against RFC-standard)
.) multiple arrange of contacts to groups
.) managing contacts for favorites
.) call history
.) birthday(events) overview + background notification for an birthday
.) sending sms/mms/emails on groups
.) contact lists for groups, titles, organisation
.) free definable sort method (lastname, firstname)
.) free definable view method (lastname, firstname)
.) find contact in a variety of ways:
-> Search by Name
-> Search by Organization
-> Search by Title
-> all other fields which are related to contacts (birthday, name, phone number, organization, notes, address, Email, relationships, websites, etc.)
.) sync support for groups for exchange + gmail accounts
.) group call filter
.) call firewall/filter (to act on special numbers)
.) fast scrolling on all lists
and much more ...
well, and after implementation of all this things .... i thought and talked with developer about - why not to implement a dialer ? THere is almost all inside to have a good dialer, too...
and here we go ...the devel is working now on "dialer", and it will be great, and if there are whishes left, let me know ...
DIALER
=====
.) quick dial last number (2x green button) as on the old nokia phones
.) t9-search - on all fields
my base old favorite was "dialer one" and the stock "samsung dialer"
now it is getting better as both together ....
search on market -> dw contact manager ...
and next few das the new version will be public !!!!
i keep you informed ...

new version 1.5.2 is amazing,
now there is also a dialer (DW Telephone) included, which can do the whole t9-search,multiple languages, easy dialing, edit number before dialing, fast dial on last dialed number, etc...
also contacts manager can copy multiple contacts to another account in 1 -step (PRO version), groups management, contact events management & noticaition, and more .....
the whole app is tested on Microsot Exchange ActiveSync accounts and does fully support them, too.
have much fun with it ..

Description
Receive email from within any app, without pausing the app, including fullscreen apps.
This is an extension for the app Floatifications published by Rob J. The floatifications app *must* be installed prior to installing FloatMail:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=robj.floating.notifications
The app supports:
Display sender name and subject
Display full email body
Commands:
Open: Opens the email app inbox
Delete: Deletes the Floatification
Reply: Reply from within the email app
Quick Reply: Reply from within the Floatification
Delete All: Deletes all recent FloatMail Floatifications
Delete Message: Deletes the email message from the remote server
Mark as Read: Marks the message as read on the remote server
The app works with nearly all email accounts by supporting the following protocols: IMAP, IMAP-IDLE (Push Mail), POP3 & Exchange via EWS or IMAP.
Note: There is no dependencies on K9, Gmail APIs or anything else so your free to use any email app that you want in conjunction with FloatMail.
Using this extension means you can do away with the status bar if you wish, disable your normal email notifications, and still be notified within FN for Email.

Very promising.
Since most of us will have either the default mailer, gmail, K9 or some other popular mailer up, the ability to import accounts setting would be very highly appreciated. Kind of a pain to enter this stuff once more from the phone's keyboards, even the best of them
Thanks Dovid. I have already implemented export/import with an encrypted export file. When you tap on the export-file it will automatically associate the file with FloatMail and populate the settings. I'll expose that functionality soon in version 1.4 or 1.5. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, Glen.

Quite nice. Will try the 1.4 or 1.5 app once posted ( and I have decided whether or not to keep the 4.4.3 Omnrom).
I take it one still needs the original emailers around to issue the notification? Or once, imported, can they be removed if this be one's preferred mailer? Read the Play description so seems this can work on its own. Actually I only use K9 so would probably keep it around.
Exchange support puts this over the rest!

Sorry I should have been clearer before. The export/import feature will backup/restore the FloatMail settings which is ideal when:
1. You want to reset the device
2. You want the same settings, but on another device
But it won't automatically configure the app based on your K9/Gmail settings.
The app connects directly to your IMAP server. In the case of Gmail, it would connect to the server using IMAP-IDLE/Push-mail. When a message is sent, it will automatically appear in a floatification within a few seconds.
It is capable of opening the inbox or compose screen of any email app that you want. [You just need to choose the app from a list on the account setup screen] However, since it shows the full message and you can do quick replies hopefully users will not need to open their email apps so often.
Cheers,
Glen

This is work with any email account (so is set up by itself)? Have not seen this yet, maybe work a look.
EDIT:
I see I had commented on this is the distant past. For some reason, I had not gotten extensions really working.
So trying to set it up: Need to support two-stage auth. Typing in those Google "app-specific" passwords is impossible.

As a side note, Notifly supports QKSMS (although you had not updated Notifly's page on XDA Labs to reflect that), however Flychat still does not support it.

I tried to merge functions of FLychat into Notifly first but it was technically not possible.
Notifly is for Notifications.
Flychat for chats.
For example im currently integrating a full chat history but this would not be ok for Notifly. Also Notifly supports single Intent apps like gmail. Flychat needs multi intent that user can send multiple messages.
No support for Google Messenger?
This is what im looking for, good ui, but can u improve efficiency of using ram? I have a moto g first gen, only 1gb of ram, this app use 80-100mb of ram.
Thanks for this great app. Any chance of supporting viber? That's my main chat platform.
@flyperinc I'm having an issue. Skype works fine with the app, but hangouts don't appear. I'm running a modified version of stock 5.1 on my Verizon droid turbo. I'm rooted with xposed. What could be the conflict?

I used to use Google Messenger a few years ago, back when I had still used GAPPS, since it was leaked.
However, I moved off it when I discovered QKSMS, since it was so similar in aesthetics (proper Material Design) in it's default settings, and at the same time, it was much lighter (and Google Messenger was still light in those days, at ~7MB).
You should try it, it beats Google Messenger at every turn, plus it's already supported by Flychat.
This app is great, but the most important thing missing is the option to send pictures, if you will add it that would be amazing.
Please add suport for disa.im
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.disa
very nice addition, i am trying your ecosystem of apps with my setup up and they seem to integrate with material design very nicely. very promising. i feel google will start using floating bubbles more.
i would like to suggest adding complete chat history, group chat support, multimedia support, and app designated chat backgrounds. i have a set chat background in telegram and it would be nice to see in the chat bubbles :victory:
current issue i'm encountering is that flychat does not properly backlist. i will still see chat bubbles in nova launcher even though it was blacklisted
Allo?
Any chance of adding yaata and Kik support? Great job btw!
Can you please add google allo?
So I have the problem as described in the headline. For example I added a contact some days ago and I notice today on Whatsapp it has no name. So I go to my contacts and see it shows only the number. Sorry for my late answer, but strangely enough this was the actual problem. By default when you create a new contact contact (unrelated if Google contact etc.) apparently the name you choose is the 'wrong' column called Name Prefix and it doesn't even show the 'correct' column first name. So everytime you create a new contact you will have to edit the contact and put the same name again in the column 'first name'.
It's strange for me and also weird that noone mentioned this before, everyone has to kind of search for a contact sometime and notice this?
Anyway thanks for your input and showing me the fault!

When I open my contacts I have a name for John Jones. But when I open the messaging app John Jones is not in the list of available names. How can I fix this.
Do it directly from contacts...
Do what directly from contacts? I would like see John Jones' in the list of recipients when I open the 'Messages' icon. When I click on the 'blue' Messages icon on the main screen I see a list of the text messages I have. In addition, near the bottom there is an outline of a message box. Below that are the words 'Conversations' and 'Contacts'. When I click on the Contacts the name for John Jones does not appear. When I click on the outlined message box and proceed to select a recipient I get a list that looks very much like my list of Contacts except John Jones is not in the list.
It is only when I click on the Contacts icon on the main screen that John Jones appears.

There should be a pop up if you tap on the contact or at least there is with Pie. It's a little touchy if you don't hit it right and then you need to hit the back button to try over.

I don't upgrade as I like Android 9's core functionality and usability; even after over 3 years I'm still learning about it. Android's lack of version continuity is a true pain... which I choose to avoid.
Does the contact saved have a phone number that you can text, or is it perhaps saved with email only?
Ok. I see what you're both talking about now. I randomly selected several contacts and found they don't all appear the same. I must have a different version of the OS but I see the same icons on some as you do but in a different location. To clarify, I selected Contacts from the main screen. If I click on certain contacts I get your circled list, horizontally, just below the contact name and number. (There is a spot for a picture above the name.) But for some contacts, such a John Johns (fictitious name, BTW) I get none of this. I only get "History" and "Storage Location". It seems all contacts have these last two items. But some contacts have much more e.g. email address, home address, etc. There must be a way to configure the contact. I'll keep looking. Thanks.

Thanks.

If I go through the Samsung phone app and select contacts I get the version I posted previously.
If I go directly to Contacts I get this:
Like Windows there's usually 2 or 3 ways to do the same action in Android.
Well duh!! At some point I clicked to have the contact added and it did just that - it added the name but no number. So just now I manually added a number to John Jones and a miracle happen. John Johns now appears in my list of available recipients under the Messages icon. I know there is a reason I have avoided using cell phones.
Thanks to all for helping will this issue. I'll now go hide and not tell anyone about this conversation.

Yay! Androids can be counterintuitive
Androids are like a jigsaw puzzle at times. All you need to do though is play with it like a little kid. A lot of my actions are more muscle memory at this point when navigating Androids.
On a new phone or UI I can feel lost... damn rabbit holes.
