Market Helper works with Nexus Player - Nexus Player General

Market Helper is an application for rooted android devices developed by redphx. The application allows you to spoof the Google Play Store into thinking you are using a different device, with the key benefit of allowing the user to download applications that the Play Store flags as "not compatible with device." The application does not alter the build.prop file. More information and a download link can be found at the link below:
codekiem.com/2013/02/13/market-helper
I was able to successfully use this application on my rooted Nexus Player. This is noteworthy because the latest posts in the support thread for the application say that it does not work with Android L, and that the dev is retired, such that an Android L compatibility update is unlikely. The Nexus Player runs Android L, and the application worked perfectly to spoof my NP as an Asus Transformer tablet.

Thanks for sharing this is a great news... do you see all the apps using NP's Play Store ? and how about paid apps ?

To be clear, this opens up app availability in the web version of the Google Play store. So you can sideload any app from the web Play Store. I did not see an expanded app selection in the Android TV Play Store app.
Yes, this absolutely works for paid apps. The whole reason I tested this was to get the Slingplayer for Tablets app on my NP. I was happy to pay $15 for the app, but became extremely frustrated that I could not legitimately download the app because I do not own any other android device besides my NP. By rooting my NP and using the Market Helper app, I was able to spoof the Play Store into thinking my device was an android tablet and bypass the restriction. Slingplayer for Tablets 3.5.2 works well on NP as long as you have a mouse.

Awesome I think you have achieved something today, so far I think this is the best method to get paid apps to the NP... I will give it a try today
Edit:
It works like a charm yay

Is it safe to use non compatible applications?

I am using non compatible application in my P-901, like BBM, Microsoft office, Google Launcher, Samsung Milk, Lab values ..etc
I have downloaded them using google , installed them and they are running smoothly. I know they are not compatible with the device and they are not in the play store. My device is not rooted.
Are they harmful to the software/hardware because they are not compatible?
I just want to check that and if they are harmful I will un-install them immediately.
Thanks...

No, that just means they may not run smoothly. You could have issues with the way they display, they might force close, or they may run fine. You never know.
If they are jot compatible how did you download them from Google? Usually they will not download 1f they are not compatible.

Nah, it won't hurt anything. On Android it's called sideloading and people do it on pretty much every device.
There may be some rare exceptions, but basically if it installs and runs from an apk, then you're good to go. It won't damage anything.
A lot of things are labeled "incompatible" on purpose for reasons other than being technically unable to run on the device. (Like for example Google and Samsung want to keep their launcher and Milk music only running on certain devices thar they benefit from so everything else is flagged as incompatible. Also it may be that devs haven't optimized for certain devices and so don't want it running on them and then get low ratings for devices they don't support.

Almost all applications either paid/free or compatible/incompatible are available outside google play, just google it and download it.
Which version of ms office are you using and where did you find the apk, link please, I'm just interested in word,

U can make a google search and you will find a lot of downloadable links...
The only ones that are truly incompatable are apps that require specific hardware features that aren't physically present in an incompatible device.
The best place I've found to get apps outside of Google play is Aptoide. Yes, there are plenty of crappy porn apps and repos full of pirated ones , but the default store, and many others have any legitimate free app you could want, in any past or present version you could want. It has adult content filtering turned on by default as well. The Aptoide app also has a play store-like update tab and auto-update feature, too. A recent update made huge improvements to the UI, which closely mimics the style of Google play. Just make sure to skim over feedback to check for issues, and avoid app versions that are higher than they should be.
They're all incompatible for one very simple reason: The developers haven't enabled the QHD resolution in Google play. It's really that simple and that stupid.
I had this same rubbish for almost a year with the TF700T, it was the only and first device with 1920x1200 at that time, and nearly évery app was incompatible.
Sideloading them always worked perfectly well, no issues.

You are right..
For example BBM is working fine in Note Pro and Note 2014 but in a bad resolution.

Oh man, that was just the tip of the iceberg with the TF700T. Mine still fights like a champ, but with the hardware specs it had for the time of its release, it should have gotten much more attention. Development was slow and scarce, and the stock firmware was riddled with issues and bugs. I typically go for whatever device has the best, newest hardware, and it stays seems like the second and third place devices get all the attention and accommodation. Going through it with the galaxy note pro 12.2 as we speak. I'm working on building a working cm 11 ROM for it in my spare time. All its had for weeks is twrp recovery. I just wish I had more time.

Google Play store says my phone is incompatible, could someone please send me .apk?

I bought a breathalyzer that requires an app to use. The app requires android 4.3, so I rooted my Photon Q 4G and installed cm-10.2.1-xt897. However, the google play store still thinks my device is incompatible, even after messing around with Market Helper. I even tried playing around with build.prop manually, which was almost a disaster when it broke my keyboard and I had no way of typing back in the settings I had changed. I changed ro.product.model, ro.product.brand, and ro.product.manufacturer to imitate a Galaxy S3 and S4, neither worked. Anyway, I'd like to try side loading the app on my device to see if it works because I'm pretty sure the google play store is just being stubborn (I've seen other installation issues reported by people with non-rooted phones for this app). Could someone with a compatible phone (stock Android 4.3+) please download this app and send me the .apk file? I'm not asking anyone to steal since it's a free app anyway. Alternatively, could someone explain which settings I should be changing in build.prop to fool the google play store (preferably without breaking my phone)?

Editing build.prop to look like other phones is not a good idea.
And to unlock the play store there is an xposed module available. So install xposed and find the module.:good:

Apps from the Play Store

Anyone with the ADT-1, do you have full access to the play store or is it a curated list of apps?
For my uses I'm really going to want to have access to a VPN application like Anyconnect or OpenConnect, is that a possibility with the Player?
Right now, since it's only a preview with a preview of the Play Store, the app base is very limited to choose from. Like 20-30. So far though, I have been able to sideload many APKs just fine (root explorer, XBMC, XBMC Updater, etc.). I still haven't gotten the OTA that was released yesterday though, so I don't know if the experience will change; however, I'm willing to bet there will be some kind of curated experience.
Update: Found the OTA package for Molly to LPX13D. Updating now (after master resetting by mistake - lol). Will follow up with what the updated experience looks like.
Update 2: So, I'm on the new build. The overall experience is pretty much the same, with some minor UI/UX changes. The Play Store no longer says preview on it; however, I still only have the small list of apps. More specifically: 4 Android TV apps; 3 TV Remote Games; and about 15-20 Gamepad Games.

The link to the OTA is http://android.clients.google.com/p...a.signed-molly-LPX13D-from-LPW39.92b93576.zip
If you have rooted the device you will have to fix the update-script to remove checks of install-recovery.sh and build.prop as well as installing a custom recovery for the modified build to install.
Two questions related to apps from the Play Store...
a) Do I need to root in order to sideload apps? Or can I do it similar to a phone/tablet where I just have to allow "unknown sources"?
b) The three apps that will be my "killer apps" will be the DirecTV app, Amazon Prime, and HockeyStreams (HSDroid in the play store). Any reason to believe any/all of these will not work if side loaded?
Thanks in advance... this will likely drive my decision to buy a Nexus Player!

Some apps have compatibility issues with ADT-1. I've tried the Comcast VOD app and HBO Go. They load, but are missing elements for navigation and don't function properly.

I was wondering this as well. I know that Android has native support for PPTP and L2TP/IPsec protocols and that I can set up a VPN on my Nexus 5 with no additional software. Does the Nexus Player / ADT-1 have this functionality, or has it (as I suspect) been removed?
Thanks.

[APP][TV5.0+][2015.03.10] Sideload Launcher for Android TV v1.05

Easily launch apps you sideloaded to your Android TV
This is only for the new Android TV devices, like the ADT-1 and the Nexus Player, it is completely useless on other devices
Android TV requires existing apps to be updated and declare themselves compatible before they're installable from the Play store.
While certainly not as streamlined or seamless as the average user would wish for their TV, many apps can still function on some level on these devices if you sideload them, but they don't show up in the Leanback Launcher (the Android TV homescreen).
So for that there is this app, the Sideload Launcher. A simple app that shows you the normal app launcher icons that a phone or tablet would show you, but which are hidden on Android TV, allowing you to launch any sideloaded app!
PS. This is a rather silly small app, but it came in handy for me while messing around. I don't expect this to become even remotely popular even when Android TV takes off, but it only took two hours to write, and I learned some new APIs, so if anyone at all ends up using being happy it exists, I consider that a win.
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.tv.sideloadlauncher
Redistribution of the APK is not allowed.
(1.00: 1000 downloads; 1.02: 1140)
Thanks for this. This will def come in handy.
very cool. could this be modified or something similar for amazon firetv?
Excellent work as always.
Thank you!

Yes, it's need to be slightly updated before the Play store will allow it to be visible because of the new TV guidelines...
How do you sideload on this device? I got mine yesterday and just hooked it up.
I'm far from a newb when it comes to using adb, fastboot and doing pretty much anything on android but I cannot get sideload to work on the nexus player. I've tried it from PC and Mac, I've used the most recent ADB version and USB driver. ADB sees the player but if i try to sideload it says "error". I've tried in recovery, frmo within a normal boot (dev options enabled, ADB is allowed as well as unknown sources)

EDIT: Approved by Google for TV distribution, yay! Now if only the Play store on my device would actually work, I could check it out...
This is so nice, using it on the nexus player . all my sideload apps are showing up , except for plex ver 3.6.2.267 , i find it in system, apps section.... thanks for making this ,great time saver....Thanks
[BUG] Menu Key Broken
I ran into a bug with v1.02.
I'm running this on the Nexus Player. I have the Amazon Fire TV stick remote paired with it. That gives me access to the menu button.
When I hit the menu button, Sideload Launcher hangs - no button presses except for the back button or the home button are recognized.
This app, Viaplay, does not show up in Sideload launcher. Any idea why?
Some Apps Not Showing
I sideloaded Plex (because the Android TV version of Plex is still too buggy for me) and it does not show up in Sideload Launcher.
As a workaround I tried to use Tasker and Autoshortcut to create an app with Tasker App Factory to open Plex. Thinking if I named the app something different it would show up in the Launcher. Well, that didn't work either as that app isn't showing. Is there a reason why certain apps aren't showing in the Sideload Launcher?
Plex development version v3.8.2.294 is not showing on the Nexus player. Earlier dev versions worked fine in the v3.5 ranges.
Is chrome preinstalled in sideload ?
Updated to v1.05: should make some of the missing apps show up. The app wouldn't load the title of apps that weren't properly localized (bad developer!), and in turn would fail to display them.

It will not work with otner devices exept nexus box and i also think that it is too pity that it works only with some devices, i think they are mistaken with this decision.
I use Handy Smart TV Launcher (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.handysmart.android.launcher&hl=en)with its’ remote control app for my tv box and i ‘m sure that it will be the main rival for this new launcher from Google. Morover it works with a lot of mobile devices and tv-boxes and have intuitive remote control app.

What console exactly? Can you list your specs, We don't test any sonsoles yet as our apps optimized for tv-boxes. We cannot guarantee that apps will work appropriate on all devices.
Kinda surprised that nobody has been successful in hacking this to work on regular old android builds. Considering the Google play launcher from lollipop was ported to older versions of android before the play store version was updated I'd think it would be technically possible at least... Too bad I don't have the knowledge to do it myself.

Is it possible to make it work on Xiaomi Mi Box Pro?
hmm
I have it / installed running (laidbacklauncher) whatever that drop box apk was.. it installs.. and runs.. but if you click the voice seach, it crashes, and it looks like its constantly loading (recommendations) but it deffinately loaded.
(Note 2 I317m - model phone)
But i changed a setting in the system via build.prop editor changing the brand of my device to nexus where it before was T0lte (custom firmware for note 2)
i never attempted to install it prior so i dont know if it will load or not. going to see if the play store detects my phone as a nexus and allows the apk download.. (fingers crossed)
