[Q] LG Volt - General Questions and Answers

Hello! I have the Boost Mobile LG Volt and I am somewhat of a noob but smart enough to get it rooted on V4 using a rollback guide and towelroot. My problem is i hate the stock kernel and hate not having voltage control. Is there a flashable package that i can use to add voltage control and all of the other fun things that come with a custom kernel? Ive seen guides on porting roms to my device and they seem fairly simple since its just editing a zip with all custom stuff and leaving the sys files alone. Again the kernel!!! Ive tried flashing so many diffrent kernels but they all softbrick my phone
I love this phone. With root i have CPU settings so it lasts 3 days heavy use. I want more !!! Please help!!!
The stock kernel for this phone is available on githubhttps://github.com/chevanlol360/Kernel_LGE_X5

And from what im reading kernels must be device tailored?

yes sir they do. development is still in its infancy, there are people working on cyanogenmod right now, but they "JUST" got audio support, so you may want to wait a minute. There are a few custom roms available, just takes a lil google-fu.
Also you are very lucky to still have a working phone, careful with those kernels.

Flash kernel info needed

Hi experts,
I am currently using LG P500 with stock rom & kernel. I have never rooted rom before this. I have read somewhere from useful thread from this forum like here but am still not so sure and wondering if any problem will effect to the stock rom if I would like to flash kernel on my phone.
Most of the time I depend on my mobile phone such as alarm clock so just worried anything happen to the rom will cause me troublesome. ^^; I might flash rom in future but not now. So am interested about flashing kernel since people said that flash kernel will save battery life as well as overclock cpu. It would be glad if someone could explain to me or sharing link with great info.
Thanks a lot.

can i ask which software you are using?
you have to be careful when flashing kernels as some kernels may not be compatible with your specific software.
I would search for specific kernels for your software and if you have root, then make sure you have a backup kernel for the one you are about to flash and if any problems arise you can flash it back.
I use Kernel Update Utility 0.9 to flash different kernels to my device so maybe you can look into that once you have done your research

[Q] Stock rom, custom kernal that allows vids to work ??

hi all long time lurker here, first i want to thank all the devs for their their time and effort that they have put in to bring out custom roms and tweaks for all of us. with that being said.
Ive flashed several roms to my infuse, but ive found i like stock the best. ive been running 2.3.6 for a while now, unrooted , plan jane and i like it. I want to root it and install a custom kernel but in the past ive found that doing so usually breaks the feature to watch flash videos. Are there any custom Kernels that allow flash to work and work well?
I dont want to go to a custom rom, their just to much for me, i just need the basic interface of the phone and the ability to watch videos to kill time.
I want a custom ker so i can add tweaks to optimize the performance of my device while not overcrowding it with garbage.
Any help pointing me in the proper direction is appreciated

[Q] nexus 4 touch control kernel vs N5 port stock 4.4.2

xDA developers community here first thank you for pumping life back into nexus 4
I rooted, custom recovery using CWM running N5 port from best developer and user friendly Dev ever Mr Anderson
However being so simply noon I always prefer trial and error and learn the hard way.
I installed touch control for n4 from this thread
[APP/MOD] TouchControl (Nexus 4)
And it downloaded and updated the kernel, my bad no back made prior flashing extra the three way boot. I come to learn the kernel isn't compatible with N5 port stock image 4.4.2
I am a newbie here and love it when stuff works. I respect posts and op also xda rules, yes I know I need to read prior ask, well I've searched and read more than 100 posts on nexus no less than 50 pages per thread
Y question, what kernel I am on from N5 image stock ROM 4.4.2, touch control is playing around, touch ain't responsive couple of times therefore I want to uninstall but anything I should do to re- flash custom kernel again. And where can I get the kernel, I know where but as said am newbie and can't ask or post on threads yet.
Thank you for this great experience I had and huge knowledge I got on Linux android ADT adb debugging modes custom recovery and kernels, not to forget flashing custom Roms

[Q] Question about overclocking~ (Note 2 N7100)

Hey xda~ noobynoob here and I got a few questions about overclocking, here we go:
1. Is it safe?
Just bought a Note 2 N7100 and got it in a bootloop [scared me senseless, thank god i fixed it]
2. Kernels?
Um what are kernels and what do they differ?
3.Are all kernels for overclocking compatible for my device/rom?:fingers-crossed:
Note 2 N7100 with Dr.Ketan's Custom Rom v10.0 android version 4.4.2 (I currently have my eyes on this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001838)
4.What kernel do you guys recommend (in case this one isnt compatible or if you just know a better one):victory:
I'm open to suggestions, I just want whats best for my phone
5.If something goes wrong flashing the kernel is there a chance I get bricked/stuck in a bootloop?
already messed up once when trying to flash my custom rom, im afraid itll happen again
ThanQ

The kernel, in the simplest terms, is the piece of software in the operating system that tells the OS how to use the hardware.
Custom kernels typically take the stock kernel and modify the settings, and/or add features and setting parameters (often ported from other custom kernels).

I don't know. It's your responsibility to make sure it's compatible. I know Samsung makes many different versions of their Notes and Galaxy XS models (for different carriers, different regions of the world, etc), so a kernel for one version of the Note 2 might not work with your Note 2.
Further, just like it is with computer processors, not all are created equal. After manufacturing, processors are tested sorted into "bins" (literally) according to how well they work. Typically processors are all underclocked below their potential to some degree. That way they're not maxed out and overheating won't be a problem. Since they're underclocked, that means they can be overclocked to their true potential, but how far is a roll of the dice. One guy's Note 2 might have a processor from a higher bin and stably overclockable to 1.9GHz. Or you might have gotten one from a lower bin, and all you can OC it to is 1.7GHz. OC'ing too far will cause glitches and crashes.

I can't help you with that. It's best that you just read up on the kernel(s) you want to try, and by "read", I mean start from the first post, and read every post until you've read them all. That way you know about possible problems and how to sort them out if you encounter them.
5.If something goes wrong flashing the kernel is there a chance I get bricked/stuck in a bootloop?

If you have a custom ROM, that means you have a custom recovery (TWRP, CWM, etc). From within the recovery you can do what's called a nandroid backup. It probably won't be labeled as "nandroid" (even though that's what we call it), but just a backup. This creates an "image" of your phone as it is when you run the backup. Store it on your SD card or PC (or both). If something goes wrong, you should still be able to reboot into recovery and restore your backup. Or, if you have a copy of your current kernel (custom ROMs sometimes have their own kernels, and might be available to download), you can just reflash the old kernel in recovery.

hmmm I guess ill need to read up more, I read on the kernels page something about needing a touchwiz based rom? what does that mean and how do I tell if my rom is tocuh based? As for that backup idea, that seems pretty useful, im gonna do that right now

Lg g3 kernel development help please

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me to build a custom kernel for my lg g3 D855 I have done android development before so its nothing too new for me and I've had quite success in the past but these not many forums about this topic and especially up to date the trouble is either the code to install required packages in Linux don't work or I get random errors when building the kernel like a error 2 or 1 which there is nothing online about this error
So again I would really appreciate it if someone could lead me in the right direction or just some help anything is better then nothing
If you want to know what I'm trying to do then I want to build a custom kernel to overclock the phone but also help in performance because on full stock it gets too hot and constantly lags so I have install a custom ROM on the phone, the viper os ROM and hope to make a kernel to have a full custom phone and I can't use kernel apps like kernel adiutor because the setting don't save and there's no overclocking present after the reboot so that's why I want to make a kernel plus I would enjoy making one instead of getting one offline and most of the custom kernels for the D855 either bootloop the phone or puts it in download mode so there are many reasons why I want to make one and source.android.com seems awkward to follow along with but I have been doing dev stuff for a few months now so I know a fair bit about it just not as much as I would hope
Thanks for reading the post I know its a long one if you can help me it would be much appreciated
