[q] jlab pro-7 - General Questions and Answers

I recently brought a cheap android tablet (JLAB PRO-7) from Staples on Black Friday. Has anyone flashed a rom or did anything with this particular tablet?
I tried rooting it even though it came partly rooted and now evey time it is cut off or it reboots it is back to as if it came straight out the box. Do any one have any idea on a fix for this?

Glad someone else is looking to root JLAB also!
I am desperately looking for info on this also. You left out the biggest surprise and annoyance with this low-end tablet...NO ABILITY TO MOVE APPS TO THE SD CARD!!! This thing is running 4.4.2 for Chris sake! After OS install, you only have 5GB internal memory. I put a 32GB card on it in order to shuffle off the app memory hogs and I can't even use it!!! <calming down...>
As a result, I get "insufficient memory available" errors for many programs. And some won't even consider the tablet for install. I know you get what you pay for, but the specs on this thing aren't awful. It just needs a decent OS on it. I tried loading into the bootloader once and almost bricked it. When rebooted, the "JLAB" opening screen came up and just stayed there...forever. I finally had to leave it on overnight to completely run down the battery to get it back from the abyss.
Please, if anyone has this thing and is able to put a decent rooted OS on it, post it here. Thank you!

+1 any headway?

I got one for xmas from a friend... I was able to root it with kingo root tool for windows.
I hope this helps.
Make sure debug mode is on in developers options.
To enable this mode clicking the "build number" a few times in system settings.
It rooted my device but i ran into a few issues. First every time the device does a full restart it makes me do the welcome wizard also
(unsure if my defective or not) my wifi signal becomes extremely weak even though i am sitting next to the router.

Kewlz now that we have root all we need is a custom recovery. Id be willing to test out a recovery if someone wants to make one.

I found out the all these cheap tablets are rebraned the manufactor is trio they also sell tablets under their own name.

For the love of God please make a room for this. It's often rebranded please let us know if it works with some other room.

I also rooted my Pro 7 using KingoRoot and am now facing the issue of a factory reset every time the device restarts or powers off/powers on. Were you, or anyone else able to solve this problem? Thanks!

I did not resolve the issue. I returned the thing and got my money back. There are much better options out there then this cheapo thing.

There are definitely better options but it was free on cyber Monday at tiger direct. It will be a decent tablet for my young son if I'm able to get it sorted.

I agree with you. But logically it's been a year and these China tablets see no dev love. Unless you know the inners of android OS... I wouldn't suggest it because you will be taking on issues like this alone. ebay the Toshiba Thrive. They are really cheap now and run so much better. If i remember right someone made custom kitkat for it. It's really durable and strong perfect for a kid.

It's been several years since I had an android device but I go the same black friday deal and figured that it would be a great ereader (free). Now I need a little more room so I'm trying to root but both kingo and king root failed for me.. Any ideas? I'm on a mac running windows through a VM but I don't think that is the issue.

Your version is obviously newer as this thread was made last Xmas. As I stated these devices have little to no support so finding a working root would be hard. Your computers os shouldn't matter. If you want an easy root return the device and get a name brand device.

[Q] Custom ROM for Ramos X10F anyone?

Hello
I recently purchased a Ramos X10F on an impulse buy on a trip to the PP last month. I had been waiting longer than a year for an 8" 4:3 device that was not Apple with expandable memory and this one just made me succumb. Also I fell for the false data in marketing it as a cortex A9 and I thought a quad core A9 should be faster than my dual core A9 in the n7000. Actually it is a A5 or A7 (device details in cpuz mention some A7 blah).
The device has great potential to be an ipad mini killer (at $165) as the hardware fit and finish is very good, the screen is IPS and it weighs only 360 grams. I can hold it in one had lying in bed without tiring myself. However performance is marred by the stock android 4.1.1. Intially I thought it was slow nand flash as when I enabled cpu stats, the nand-rw-flash process appeared to be the top process for a longish time, each time it stalled. However I later discovered, the device is very laggy when Wifi is on while actual WiFi throughput is very good - I get almost full speed 16mbs in the speedtest.net results. Unfortunately even with entropy seeder and a deadline or noop scheduler, the lagginess is only partially improved. Also the old linux/android decision of using input to randomize and seed the entropy is only good for desktops not servers or touchpads. I have to tap a few times to get a app screen to respond inexplicably and suddenly and it shows that the OS was waiting on input. The device is best for streaming as typically once the app is opened I never have a problem with lag a it is typically 15 to 30 mins of viewing before switching apps. Otherwise the poor performance means a task that should take normal time (like reading news in the morning for 15 mins) takes more than twice the time as I have to struggle with the slow app launches and screen loading mostly. But if Wifi is switched off and content is cached, everything is smooth and much better. Battery life is decent with display brightness set around or below 10% typically.
So my recommendation for a new buyer is - dont buy until a custom ROM is made available. Dont fall for the x10pro video on the utube yet. Real world performance is not the same. Once the smoothness of the 4.4.x is acheived it will be a killer product. (It is not a weak cpu either, it is responsive and smooth with wifi off. Although the chip does not support out-of-order execution)
I would like to upgrade the android from its 4.1.1 to a 4.4.x version. Also this version is vulnerable to heartbleed and the openssl bug that came after that in June 2014. The omnirom 4.4.3 on my n7000 is really smooth and I am hoping somebody will develop a custom rom for this device.
But I dont see a custom ROM or CWM for this anywhere. I installed a CWM recovery for another ATM7029 device (yarvik) and it boots, but I forgot about the display driver compatibility and I can no longer view the menu in recovery mode. Otherwise rooted it and running ok.
The specifications of the device are as follows:
OS: Android 4.1.1
CPU: Quad Core ATM7029
GPU: Vivante GC1000
RAM 1GB,DDR3 --> False. Real RAM is 686MB.

Battery: 4000mAh

What do I need to submit for a developer to build a custom rom for this device? Some kind of dump? Also need a recovery manager with the right display driver. Either TWRP or CWM.
I hope a developer will volunteer.
Thanks

[Q] ZTE z797c Quartz

I just bought 2 ZTE Z797C Quartz from Wal-Mart for me and my wife for Christmas. Hers is for Candy Crush, but I have wanted to root this device since before I walked out of the store.
As far as I know from my meager research (that I somehow found time for) there are no " 1 click " methods out there yet for the z797c And, surprisingly enough, not one thread or any mention that i could find on this site. (again, dont have much time to search, I could have missed it)
I think the main thing i want to ask is if there a beginners guide out there for getting Root access to new phones? I have the next couple days off and i want to dive as deep as possible into this phone in this time. I"m not one to shy away from something just cause I have never done it before. And I don't care if i brick this phone.
If you know of anyone that has rooted this phone or if there is a guide you know of please let me know.
thank you for reading, good morning. and if i dont see you, good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight.
Screen
5.5"
The ZTE Quartz's screen is 5.5 inches with 540 x 960 pixels resolution.
Processor
1.2GHz
There is a Qualcomm MSM8610 Quad core 1.2 GHz processor (CPU).
OS
The phone runs on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system (OS).
Camera
8+ MP
You can take photos or capture video with the phone's onboard 8+ megapixel camera. There is also a secondary front facing camera with 1+ megapixels resolution.
Storage
8 GB
Internal memory is 8 GB. An external, MicroSD, MicroSDHC, microSDXC (up to 64 GB) expansion slot is available for increased storage capacity.
Battery
3400mAh
The phone is powered by a 3400 mAh Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery. ZTE's performance ratings are: 16 days standby time, 1080 minutes talk time.
zte quartz
I too have this phone and I have looked everywhere for a root also. I don't think it's been out long enough for a root to be made. I hope someone would come up with one soon.
I bought this phone for my girlfriend in November I ran into the same problems I did with my zte unico adb just reboots but I'm also not the most experienced but I have yet to find a one click yet for either... I have a feeling that this might be like the unico where no one finds a method BC its a budget smartphone along with straight talk putting a bunch of locks on it ... But I hope it isn't
I've looked into all kinds of options here.
The bootloader is locked(of course), that's why ADB just reboots straight into the rom, so we can't access fastboot.
They've put a custom recovery on the phone that actually removed the option to flash update.zip... adb does not work in recovery either.
If another dev happens to check this post, perhaps you can point me in the proper direction or tell me what I should work towards for progress
I don't mind researching, I've just turned all of Google's links purple on this one.
ZTE Quartz IS Worth Rooting!
I think we may just have to begin randomly seeking out Developers on here instead of waiting for one of them to find or even stumble upon our rather complex and unique problem with locked bootloader and adb is worthless with fastboot. Why so much security for an economical smartphone?
Temp Root achieved
Achieved temp root via this script.
Be advised that this will only give a adb root, and that we still have no /system access due to r/w restrictions from bootloader..
Thanks go to @jcase and @hroark13
This will give us a bit more freedom in exploration.
Good luck, I'll be working on it as well.
Just for future reference:
The new version of KingRoot (as of 4.5) will successfully temp root this device, for a few minutes or so, giving apps root access as well...

I'm terribly new to the "world" of Root.
What can you do with temp Root permissions? I did actually achieve it, but the apps I uninstalled were right back there when I exited, do I have to uninstall & immediately reboot? Not sure how this all works (yes I am googling "how to root", maybe I need to do "what to do with root"?
Has anyone gained root access for this phone yet.
anything on this root problem yet i have the same problm just temp root that goes away after reboot.

Does anyone have any experience with vkworld phones?
I ask because I have ordered Ulefone Be Touch 2 three weeks ago and have many concerns about it, the biggest being cheating about the android version.
Since my phone is not yet shipped I was thinking to maybe cancel the order and buy this phone instead. There is a 2GB RAM version, the screen is 720p, it has no fingerprint sensor but the battery is supposedly extremely good (6050 mAh), it claims to have Android 5.1, both SIM slots are 4G-capable and the manufacturer seems to be more serious and established, at least that's the impression I've got.
Has anyone else on this forum ever had a phone from this company and if so, would you recommend it?
Thanks.
I have one on order (the S model). Looking forward to it. It looks very similar to the Bluboo x550 and the iNew L4. I have experience with both.
First thoughts
Ok. I have mine now and have been using it for the last 24 hours.
Background: I have the following chinese phone:
Ecoo E04 3GB
iOcean M6752
Ulefone Be Touch 2
In addition to the above, my teenage son has had the Bluboo X550 which had to be sent back as the sd card reader stopped working. This was replaced with the iNew L4 and the sd card reader just started to display intermittent problems.
The VK6050s looks to be a very similar build to the Bluboo and the iNew with a few cosmetic differences. The configuration of the Sim cards and the SD card are exactly the same - as is the look of the battery albeit the VK6050s claims to be 6050mah, the Bluboo 5300mah and the iNew 5000mah. The vk6050s has 2GB memory compared with the iNew which only has 1GB of ram.
The vk6050s has partitioned it's internal storage into 2 whereas both the other phones make all of the storage available in a single partition.
I have been very impressed with the phone so far. The display is excellent and coming from 5.5" displays with 1080p my eyes can not tell the difference between them and the 720p display on the vk6050s. The ROM is smooth and appears fast (probably helped by the 2GB memory).
I have been able to root the phone. I used the same trick that I had on the Bluboo and the iNew: use KingRoot apk and then use the Replace_Kinguser_with_SuperSU-v1.8 script.
The phone also accepts my 128gb external SD with no issues.
The really good news is that the firmware for the phone can be downloaded from vkworld's website so you can have a play with root etc and still know that you can always go back to the original firmware if it all goes wrong. iNew have yet to publish their firmware.
I have also been able to successfully install the TWRP recovery that was made for the Bluboo (and is available over at needrom.com). It has let me make a backup (although I have not yet tried restoring it). It also let me flash the viper4android zip.
I do worry that it may end up suffering from the same SD card issues that the other 2 phones have. This issue appeared after a week or so. I am keeping everything crossed.
I hope this may be useful to somebody.
i think i will buy this phone insteat of bluboo x550
could anyone test its battery if its real 6050 mah or its just around 5000 like Bluebo ???
i want to buy innos d6000 but its a bit expensive. i only care about battery. if vk6050s has the same battery performance i could buy it.
10 days later and it is still going strong. This is my favourite china phone so far and I have had
Ecoo E04
iOcean M6752
Bluboo X550
iNew L4
Mlais MX Base
Ulefone Be Touch 2
Can you post some camera samples?
Is it any good?
8mpx interpolated to 13mpx?

From video reviews, seems like enabling the gesture features warns that it will consume more batteries
Does it really effect the battery life by much?
I'm interested too.

I will try and take some decent photo samples and post. I have no way of telling whether the camera is interpolated or not. I googled and couldn't find anything that tells you how to identify the sensor. If you know of how to do this then I am happy to try. I know it is an Omnivison which is pretty typical for this price point. from my experience so far I am very happy with the results.

I don't bother using the gestures. I can tell that they work as I have tested them. You've got to think that it will have an effect on the battery as I imagine there is a wakelock at play when using gestures so that the phone is looking out for them, but to be honest, isn't that the beauty of having a phone with a massive battery? You don't have to worry so much about all of the little tweaks like switching off notifications, location settings etc just to squeeze every last bit of power out of it. You can just use th ephone as it' smeant to be used without over worrying about whether it's going to last you the day or not.

I'm aware of that, just interested to know if it has some minimal effect to the battery life.
On oneplus one I only enabled gesture option for double to wake and camera while the rest are disabled and battery life is still nice with no noticeable battery drain.

Hi, were you able to use xposed tweaks on this?
Since you'll need a custom recovery like TWRP to flash the xposed zip file.
Couldn't find an exposed that would install. The 5.1 is actually a 32bit version even though the soc is 64bit.

I wonder how does that work.
So the problem is similar to bluboo x550 then with some users reporting flashing xposed file resulting in bootloop?
Based on this thread

No /system/lib64 folder or /system/bin/linker64??
Is this ROM uploaded any where?
Anyway - zip to resize userdata/intsd can be found here - if someone with a VK6050S wants to test.

Correct. Neither of those folders or files are present.
Funnily enough I used that same zip to resize the internal partition on another phone the other day and it worked very well. I'm not keen to test it out on the vk6050s yet as I have everything set up as I want it and don't 100% trust the twrp recovery as it was made for the bluboo. I know it works for flashing a zip and have made a backup but have not tried to restore yet.
Also, from what I understand, once the internal partition. Has been resized then you can't do OTA updates. I would rather wait a while to see whether there are any to come.
Besides, I still have over 1gb of internal storage left AND under storage settings it let's you state where you would like new apps to be installed: internal storage, phone storage or SD card.
On a side note, the 2gb of RAM is showing as having 1.3gb still free (with no apps open other than the chrome). Compare this with the ulefone be touch 2 wherr approx 1.9 GB of the 3gb RAM was taken up by the operating system alone. This give you some indication of how well the firmware has been optimised.

Compare this with the ulefone be touch 2 wherr approx 1.9 GB of the 3gb RAM was taken up by the operating system alone. This give you some indication of how well the firmware has been optimised.

Not a problem - I had forgotten about OTA's I'm not 100% sure how they work in terms of the stock recovery but I think the scatter.txt in the OTA's are important - changing this to the new layout should let them install..
Are you sure you can choose where apps are installed directly? It's not just the /sdcard (Android/data; Android/obb etc.) that you are choosing.
Yea 1.3GB free out of 2GB is what I get with 5.0 ROMs (64bit) - Ulefone must be doing something wierd to be usig 1.9GB (swap/zram perhaps??)

No /system/lib64 folder or /system/bin/linker64??
Is this ROM uploaded any where?
Anyway - zip to resize userdata/intsd can be found here - if someone with a VK6050S wants to test.

Yea, I have that as well - on mine that is just the /sdcard - I still need to manually move apps to external sdcard.
If it is automatic to external then I think typically it's installed to internal first then moved to external so you might find that when you get to ~400MB free internal space you won't be able to install anything else.

hello, i'm alex from italy. i ordered the bluboo.... did i make the wrong choice?
i compared other phones...but i thought the bluboo own the best features..... for example ulefone be touch 2 has BUG BEZELS and higher price, inew only 1gb...
The only one competitor was the VK6050s ( S variant with 2gb) but i thought that the claimed 6000mah was fake and similar to bluboo 5300mah, bluboo calims that they used a BRANDED battery from "amprius". so i would trust more in the true 5300mah instead the 6000mah not sure to be true.
just to say... i've found a new phone, the NEXODUS ZEN which has 2gb ram, 6 inch hd display........ it's really low priced but it uses MTK6589T and android 4.2 but maybe it's more STABLE than a new release 5.1 still not fully known by chinese manufacturer.......

PX5 USB & SSD setups -working situations

Just wanted to know what people have got running on thier systems now adays..
I had a 128g sdcard and a 32g USB in the PX3 that did the trick. But now I have changed cars and upgraded the unit.. am looking at using a few SSD's I have kicking around.
There was old threads on guys setting up external powered USB hubs and running 1t 2.5 drives when these units first came out..
But with the advent of low powered SSD's almost a dime a dozen.. (well 250gb for under $50).. with luck there is not too many barriers to plug and play..
I say that tongue in cheek as I know about the limits of Android previously seeing anything over 32gb & 64gb..but as it has matured it has been getting better with the storage situation..
So what is max people have got going at the moment?
While I am at it..
(And I didn't think it was right.to clutter up the ROMs threads with this question)
Split screen ROMs..
Just had a look at both devolopment ROMs and couldn't see if any had the ability.
I remember seeing a few units with this ability around the traps as I was searching for mine.. ( maybe just a sales gimick)
But the old transformers had this ability via the very talented Tim's rom work and I am surprised it hasn't become the norm in Android..
I do understand that we have 'draw over top of other apps' permission.. and that gmaps does do it's little minimizer thing..but it's kinda crude in that it is taking re-estate on top of say the music app..
A better look on these bigger screens would be GPS on one side and music on the other..
I mean they have the CPU and GPU memory to handle this..
The Android 8.0 ROMs do have split screen (even stock). With an app open, just press and hold the "recent apps" button and you can then select another app to run and they will run in split screen mode.
However, not all apps support this - and some will force-close as well. It's a nice feature to have, but it's a little limited right now.
Give it a try though...
Thanks for that will try it and report back.
Understand that it's also a safety issue while driving..
(Lol and that is another conversation ).
But seriously it would be better to set this up before hitting the road. i.e GPS navigation on one side and selection of music playing on the other..and or radio stations..
That way your not trying to reach across playing with it while driving.
I know, I know and it's been debated a tad in another thread. Thus the reason they are supposed to be locked down from driver interaction via motion sensors.
Which if a named brand, is a good idea to migrate liabilities.. you don't want to be held liable if some fool crashes and kills themselves and or others while using a entertainment system that comes stock with a car.. (nanny state type scenario).
This also brings up good steering wheel key mapping especially now that many of these units are going down the path of being knob less..and we are going for the full screen experience.

128GB sd card, formatted Fat32 (by android unit itself)
Works fine except
Oreo want to "check CF card for errors" each time it comes out of sleep, or on boot.
With and 8GB or 16GB CF card, that does not take too much time, but a 128GB CF takes about 45 seconds !!!
Maybe a USB SSD (as opposed to a USD Flash Drive stick), would not require this error Check. I suspect a USB Flash drive will.
This alone might be the justification for a USB SSD
Haven't been able to test it as yet .
Seems I got the slow boat from China on this supplier of SSD and M2 housings..
With luck they are here this week and can run some tests and report back.
Pretty sure these are not USB 3 connections we have but USB 2?.. need to check the specs..do know there is 3 USB inputs on the unit..

Might do better to actually measure the speed with a 3.0 USB device.
They can say anything in the spec !!!
It may be 3.0, but it also may be slow !!
Finally the bits and pieces arrived today and had a quick play with it..
So far not looking good.
Will document it a bit more and report back..
But it seems the same old story as with the PX3 machines..and the limitations of Android.
While this is being addressed in newer versions of phones and Android version upgrades.. i.e the phones with 128 and 256g ..
These units are still limited to the lower end spectrum.
But with that being said..
The 180g SSD and housing through the machine into a tantrum.. as in pulling to much power through the ports it seems. As lost GSP ability..
Yes truely.. could not get a satellite fix . Pulled the drive and it worked.. put 32gig USB in..not drama..SSD back in and same..
Dropped the 256g M2 in.. formatted as Fat32.. and it was seen via that machine..but as I was in a hurry..I didn't get time to copy anything across to it..
Had a quick play tonight and was thinking about transfer from internal memory to it..but now it's not being seen..
Will put it through the format again and see if it works..
Got to be noted I am using generic Chinese housings..and thus anything could be up with these..
As even with the formatting..there is a bit to play around with..as in..my win10 machines are not seeing them but when I plug them into the Synology they are showing up fine..
Once again.. what have others been successful with or is it just the 128g USBs sticks that are going to have to do?.
And from reading..most are only loading up 1x of the USB ports due to the problematic USB board/port burn out?..
Seems a waste to have 3x USB ports and can't use them.. have tested all 3 with the 32g USB..and they are seeing it and playing music and video off it..
Personally, I'm happy just using the SD card slots. With a custom ROM, 128GB NTFS cards work great (read and write). I recently just tried disabling the filesystem check as well and now they basically mount almost instantly. Since i never remove them, I don't see the need to check the filesystems every time the unit comes out of sleep. So far, I haven't had any issues. If I ever do run into issues, I'll re-enabled the filesystem check since it only took a few seconds with NTFS anyway - even with fully-loaded 128GB SD cards.
For me, with (2) SD cards slots and 128GB SD cards (never tried 256GB cards) - that is plenty of storage. Plus, you can always switch SD cards as well. I just don't have the need for more that 256GB of storage on my head-unit. I'm guessing that you could use 128GB or 256GB NTFS USB thumb drives as well (so 3x128GB or probably even 3x256GB). You just need to root and/or install a custom ROM. It's really easy to do - with all of the effort you are putting into trying to make things work with stock un-rooted, you can have easily installed a custom ROM and went that route. You can always go back to stock un-rooted if you want/need to.
Or - maybe you can connect a powered USB hub if USB power is the issue? Obviously, you'd need to figure out how to power it, but I'm sure it can be done...
Yes.. chances are I will go down the custom rom route.
Just haven't had the time to sit in the car for the afternoon and flash it.
The unit I have got hasn't got sdcard slots.
(Or it may have but from some reading there is a possibility that there is one hidden behind the facing they put on to suit each car... I did have a check before install on how that is put on and seems it's just a set of screws.. and I suppose I can just send an email to the team and ask..lol)
That was the setup on the PX3 unit just had a 128 sdcard and it worked fine..
Only reason I grabbed the housing for the SSD's and M2 was they where sitting doing nothing so I might as well use them for something and or give them away.
Anyway will book an afternoon in for a play as the after market reversing cam wiring harness turned up today.. with luck it's just plug and play..
Might flash a rom and upgrade the MCU..
As per banter in some of the other threads..once the setup is done and I am a happy camper with stability.. then won't be a flashaholic as don't see the need to flash for flashing sake..just want to jump in and GPS, music, Radio or watch porn with the girl in the car..
Lol..I. Saying that just to get a chuckle from you know who...?
@jtrosky
 @dgcruzing
How did you manage to disable the filesystem check after sleep?
I use tweo 128gb sticks on my PX5 MTCE device and they took about 30-40s to be mounted, because they're checked for errors each time.
This is very annoying - could you tell me how you disabled it (or any workaround)?
Thank you!

How to install Android 5 or later on Acer Iconia B1-730?

This tablet is driving me nuts!
It worked perfectly few years and longer then a I year now it's just crazy.
I reseted it two times in a year (3 in total), I cleared cache partition 10 times already.
The problem is purely on software side, Google destroyed my tablet. YouTube is stuttering, text gets broken in Gmail when typing, Chrome is slowest then ever...
2nd problem is that this tablet with brightness set to minimum is close to make me blind. It's brighter on lowest brightness then my phone on max. So I use Night mode app that can lower screen brightness under default minimum, and of course, retarded Android 4.4 is killing it every few mins. Why app that takes less then 1MB RAM is being killed by Android 4?!
So now I will either install Android 5 or newer on it or burn it and send video to Acer Support.
I will appreciate your help!
Just to mention, this tablet can run [email protected] without problem on 3rd party YouTube apps but official app is stuttering on 360p of course, because Google care about their Android users. And yes, it's Intel Atom inside my tablet, not Mediatek, I was happy to see post about Custom ROM for this tablet here on XDA but it was meant for Mediatek Acer Iconia.
It's not a problem, I can buy new tablet (Acer never again), I just want to fix this one or break it completely.
Thanks!
You need a newer tablet or downgrade your apps to the older working version.
