Screen won't turn off when charging - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up an S5 for the wife two days ago and haven't even rooted it yet. I noticed that when I'm charging the phone, it dims, but the screen doesn't turn off like my S4. Is this typical of an S5, or is there some setting that I am missing? Works just fine if I'm not charging it.
I have to go away for a few days so I'd like to fix it if possible without having to do a factory reset or ODIN NK4 to see if that works.
Thanks in advance for the noob question.

Hi,
I believe I know how to solve this for you:
Settings-->about device
tap "build number" 7 times to unlock developer options
then Settings-->developer options, make sure "stay awake" is unchecked
Hope this helps!

That was it. I wonder why they changed the default setting for that. My S2 and S4 didn't. Thanks for the tip!

Call, screen time out bug?

When my screen is locked, I unlock it and make a call and hang up, my phone will go to sleep in 5 sec. Regardless of the timeout setting.
Does anyone else notice this?
2.3.3 and 2.3.4.
Since the update my screen every so often stays on. I have to go back to display settings and set a new time out

Did you do a factory reset after the update? I always make a habit of doing a full factory reset to wipe the phone clean and reset the firmware. I haven't had that issue or any serious issues really, v2.3.4 works the same as v2.3.3 for me.

I've noticed that, but it may not be a bug. When the display is locked and you receive a call, answer, and later hang up, the phone locks the display again. Perhaps the phone simply locks the display presuming you're done with the phone. Logically if the phone was already awake it should stay away until the screen times out. Did the Nexus originally do that?
Maybe is is by design.
I didnt do a factory reset either, its working pretty good right now.
Have not reset. The reason I moved from symbian was in part having to reset all the time I thought the grass was greener over here?

[Q] Haptic feedback problem

Hey everyone, so I just flashed Cyanogen 260 nightly and got everything running when something odd happened. I tried opening Astro, but it force closed. Since then, my haptic feedback hasn't been working. I've rebooted and checked all the settings for it to no anvil. The only time my phone vibrates now is when booting up to the splash screen, right before the boot animation. Does anyone have any ideas?
Have you checked in cyanogenmod settings under input. There are options for haptic feedback there.

Yeah. I've checked that already. Just a little update, I banged my phone against my palm to see of that would do anything. The first time I did it the phone vibrated quite a few times. After that I was unable to rereplicate that event.. I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem.

haha, well I would say banging your phone on your palm is not going be the best thing for your phone's life but and I know this is gonna be a huge pain in the ass if you have a lot of stuff, you can always reflash and see if that brings back your haptic feedback..at least then if it doesn't your one step closer to diagnosing it as a hardware problem..
Haha. When i woke up this morning the haptic feedback was working like usual. It was an odd problem, it could possibly be battery related because my phone was charging all last night.well anyways thanks for all the help!!

My button lights are not turning on, neither on notifications and neither when I am using my phone. They go off for a while. They just wont turn on. And then come back on after a while. So what is the problem?

[Q] Battery gets hot, screen flickers and dies?

Hi,
I have a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and the battery gets really hot and then the screen starts flickering and eventually goes out. I was wondering if anyone else has had or heard of this issue?
Thank you, Snow
While doing what sort of activity at what brightness level? There is s flickering issue that isn't necessarily related to heat which is why I'm asking. .

These things are rated save to use up to 80ºC, so unless it reaches near-melting temperatures, something else is probably wrong.
There are a couple of threads on screen flickering issues. Primarily concentrated issue on the WiFi and AT&T models.
It has also become a bit of a trend for people to say 'It gets really scalding hot', whilst it turns out to only be around 40ºC. That is not hot. That's normal for a device with a powerhouse CPU and no fans.
Use CPU-Z to get the actual battery temp. 25-45C is perfectly normal, 50-60C in heavy usage is also normal (Games, for instance).
This primarily happens when playing games or watching video's on it. It seems like the processor/battery gets hot and then all of a sudden the screen starts going crazy.
Enable developer options and disable hardware overlays within there. It has been said that this should fix the flickering in video playback.
Be aware that when you reboot the tablet you will have to disable hardware overlays again.
If you're rooted and have TWRP, clearing cache and dalvic will resolve the flickering for a period of time (days) without having to dive into developer options.

Hi IbrahimGla,
Once the hardware overlay issue was mentioned, I looked for instructions on how to turn hardware overlays off on the Galaxy tab (Which where hard to find). Here are the instructions and so far, it looks like it is working for me:
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
To fix flickering in video:
Enable developer options in settings (go to about device and tap Build Number 7+ times).
In developer options, under hardware-accelerated rendering, check "turn off hardware overlays". You can also check "force GPU rendering", but I've found the former is all that's necessary.

Thanks for your reply , i did what u have mentioned in the begening of my problem and no thing has changed , now after a month from the first time where my screen starts flickring the device is not turning on it is like a device with no battery it just show me the battery charging when it's off.
do you advise me to buy a new battery and replace my note pro battery??
Thank you & sorry for my bad english
I am having a similar problem with my Note Pro. It ussualy starts when the battery is down to 60%. The screen starts flickering and then I get a message saying the SD card is corrupt or not formatted. Sometimes it locks up as well. Sometimes when I plug the charger in to tells me "charging is suspended due to high battery temp.". The device is warm but not extreamly hot. If I turn the device off and let it charge, once the battery charge comes up to 70% I can turn it back on and everything works fine. As long as I keep it charged to over 60 - 70% I never have a problem. I tried several different SD cards but that doesn't seem to be the problem.
I have contacted Samsung but the only response I have gotten from them is "have you done a factory reset?".
Not sure what to try next. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry I missed this, I am not on here very often, I am back because the Note 7 is coming out. I have never replaced the battery on mine, so I am not sure. Apparently replacing the battery has worked for some people. I ended up sending the Note Pro to Samsung 2 times under warranty and the problem was not fixed.
Finally I called their support back a 3rd time near the end of the warranty period and said: Listen, I have send this *** to your repair department 2 times already. I want one that actually works sent back to me. They sent me a Note Pro in an un-marked (maybe a re-furb box?) with some sort of bar code sticker on the back of it.
Since then, this different Note Pro has worked for the most part, but every so often it has minor issues with it getting hot and the battery loosing charge, but it is not as bad as the one I bought. I really think Samsung dropped the ball on that tablet and they are lucky I just got a Tab E.
Definitely not my experience with the Note Pro. Mine has been rock solid for 2 years now, I still rack up a minimum of 2 hours of screen on time per day 7 days a week, and quite often more than that.
Just an FYI that there has been threads posted about screen flickering and battery issues that document issues with the battery connection and how to resolve them (involves opening the back and resoldering the battery terminal). Definitely something that you'd think Samsung would do but doesn't always do it . .
My tablet had the same screen flickering and getting hot problem. I solved the issue by soldering the battery connector in the motherboard. If you look at post #10 of this thread you will see a very good photo posted by Beut of the tiny black connector that seems to be failing. Other users report that the white battery connector also causes problems. In my case it was the black one, I soldered it a month ago and the problem was resolved.

Weird Note 5 issue...my screen won't time out

As the title states, my screen won't time out. It started happening a few hours ago. I'll leave my phone down, it'll dim the screen, but it won't shut the screen off. I have the timeout setting set for 30 seconds. Ironically enough, this happened to my first note 5 and I thought it was a manufacture defect so I exchanged it for a brand new Note 5 and now the issue came back. Any one know what I can do to alleviate this problem? Is an app causing the screen to stay on? I'm not sure what to do at this point. Any advice would be great.

I seemed to have the same problem and then noticed my pen was ever so slightly out. I had already tried restarting, and that didn't help, but then put the pen back in and it's been fine since.

I seem to be having the same problem. I only notice it when it's charging. I hit the lock button and screen goes off, but it goes back on again if I get a notification. I get up in the middle of the night and the screen is on, very dim but on nonetheless. My spen is not out, I checked that also.

Hey guys, thanks for your responses. It seems as though it was an app that was causing this timeout issue. I just manually uninstalled some apps that I never use/came with the phone and all is back to normal. Thanks for your replies!

May I ask what apps you Uninstalled that nay have caused this, because m8nrme is still doing it. It only does it when it is charging and I get an email or message notification. Could that be the problem? I would hate to turn off messaging notifications.

If anyone is interested. I think I figured out the problem. I went into developer options and unchecked screen awake while charging. Stupid mistake, I have no idea why that would be turned on by default.

Hey man sorry for the delayed response. I actually didn't have screen awake on in developer mode. As for the app culprit, I'm not sure which app was keeping my screen on but I suggest disbaling/uninstalling every app that you don't use/need. It worked for me and hasn't been giving me a problem since then.

It could be if you had your carrier transfer stuff for you. We use developer options to turn USB debugging on. Also states to use the stay awake while charging option. Doesn't require it but lets us transfer without interruption. Just make sure its switched off under developer options.
