Hey Guys,
i am on drei.at (3-AT) and since i upgraded from CM11 to the lollipop factory image (currently without root) my signal is much weaker than before. My new baseband version is M8974A-2.0.50.2.21, reverting back does not make a difference. I had the same problem with my Nexus 4 which i dumped for the Nexus 5.
The months before i updated the phone everything worked normal and as it should but now if i move the phone from one room to another or even take a walk outside it will loose the connection to the carrier and changes to roaming. The real problem is that it get stuck in roaming and cant get back to 3-AT, the only way to fix it is to restart the phone or search manually for the net.
After that it works till it drops the connection and the whole process starts from the beginning.
I can only compare the signal strength with the normal signal strength icon.
Work before 2-4 bars (maximum one connection drop per day)
Work after 1-2 bars (connection drop around every 10 minutes or if i change the room)
Home before: 3-5 bars (no connection drop)
Home after: 1-3 bars (many connection drops depending on position)
I hope you can give me some ideas to fix this. Thank you for your input!
Greetings

Flash the old baseband. http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...t/modem-nexus-5-flashable-modems-efs-t2514095
As written i tried a bunch of older Modems but had no luck. I tried one of the later modems and now i'm two days on M8974A-2.0.50.1.17. For now eveything works normal again!
Thank You!
I was having problems with the modem that comes with the Nexus 5 factory Android 5 image and flashed to baseband m8974a-2.0.50.1.16 (Android 4.4.4 radio). That improved my signal strength some but I'm still getting signal drops, just less frequent when the phone is just sitting on its charger in a fixed location. I'm in the USA on AT&T's network. Do you suggest I try the baseband radio M8974A-2.0.50.1.17, even though that is only included with a version of Android listed for certain countries?
I had similar problem although im in Europe and problem was in APN settings....after days or tying to set my APN it worked finally and i was able to catch LTE that disappeared after upgrade to 5.0 along with poor signal and dropouts off the network completely.
cause my carrier support was bad even they provided me half correct information..
about flashing another baseband they are total noobs and dont even know what the baseband is...
Any way connection is still poor but at least constant even with LTE with 5.0 baseband.

Hi everyone
I have an issue, when I'm on my office the network signal isn't strong so when my One S go to "NO NETWORK" after it don't go back to network.
When the situation is this I can't go to airplane mode, change operator (from settings), the only thing that work is shut down and restart (no fastboot).
Anyone else have this problem?
Maybe is a software bug?
I have the Paul recovery and su
EDIT: More info
That don't happen every time that the phone go to "no network".
I think that happen when it a weak signals and are under 2G network.
there are users with similar issues, I only use 2G networks. If i want to do a bit of browsing i will manually change to auto mode, but other than that i always leave it at 2G..
hopefully there will be a radio upgrade soon that should fix this problem...
I'm suffering from the same behavior!
I'm still with the original ROM with no ROOT so I contacted HTC about it yesterday.
I got today their reply today:
"On your phone, kindly go to settings > mobile network > Network mode, kindly change the network mode and check how the signal will respond to each of them.
-Kindly try a different SIM card, to check whether the issue is with the SIM card or the phone itself.
- Soft reset for the device by pressing the power button for 10 seconds.( Note that soft reset erases any unsaved data.)
- Safe mode(which disables any 3rd party application which might be causing conflicts for your device.) for the device by Switching power on , then press and hold volume down when the quietly brilliant logo appears on your screen, you should see 'safe mode' text written on the bottom left of your home screen.
- Factory data reset, kindly backup your data before proceeding with this step please as you will
lose every data on the phone's memory.
Please go to Settings > storage > Factory data reset > Reset phone."
I haven't done anything yet and I didn't notice the 2G issue you mentioned.
I also haven't got this issue for the last 48 hours but did encountered it twice (!!!) on Sunday while driving across the country.
I'll try having the Network on 3G only and see if that matters although the area I leave in is not with good 3G reception.
GSM is 2G
WCDMA is 3G
i use GSM only unless im using the net
I'm aware to the 2G-3G difference
I'm on WCDMA preferred so my phone tries to be on 3G.
My phone also suffers from the 3G<->H data connection jumps while the desire wasn't having any with the same provider (different SIM of course).
sorry, My bad !!
i understand what your saying now
I cant confirm much as my provider doesnt have 3g signals in my area
If i try to use 3g at my home, I have 0 bars thats why i always use 2g
I switched to 3G only (since I have most of the time 3G and surly wants it for the data rate).
I know I have on my way to work and back places with 2G only but I'll give it a try for the coming days and reply.
BTW, just few minutes ago, while having 3G active for sure (before the 3G only switch when it was still on 3G preferred) I couldn't make any phone call although I had 4-5 bars and data connection was running.
Two days ago I tried to change my sim.
Before I had a cutted microsim, now an original microsim and the issue is still present.
Yesterday I had this problem only in afternoon, not in morning and only where the switch from no network -> 2G -> 3G is very very frequent.
In all other times out from office I never had this issue.
I also changed SIM with no help, stayed in 3G network only with no help and observed that when such a network crash happened, GPS reception is also disconnected!
I had no coverage situations with the 3G only mode which recovered, but what we are facing is a network "crash".
Our situation was escalated to technical support of HTC after I wrote them all the data and they tried to solve it over the emails w/o success.
Same problem for me. I tried only 2G, 2G/3G, only 3G, but no way..same problem..i hope an update can solve this..
I just bought my new One S from T-Mobile yesterday and everything appeared to be okay but now I can barely get it to hold a signal. Forget throwing it on GSM only because it will have signal for a whole few seconds before dropping it. I also am having Wi-Fi issues as well. It just intermittently drops the connection there as well... Not a great start!
whether im imagining this or not im not sure, But for me it seems like, When the Network signal increases, the WiFi signal drops, And when the WiFi signal Increases, the Network signal drops...
ive been noticing this for over a week now, So it cant just be coincidence..
I dont think my (or our) handset is faulty, I just think theres a pretty big bug in the ROM, and no matter if you switch ROMs they all use the same base at the moment..
This phone has great potential. But HTC need to be listening to us and release some updates. !!

I noticed the same exact issue last night. My phone will go to full signal before dropping whichever connection. I'm just glad this phone can handle staying on 4G without draining the battery like crazy although I can only imagine how much further it'd go with 2G.

Exactly the same here. But I had a different WIFI issue - WIFI won't drop but stay connected - even if I am far away off the AP.

that one is also a known bug.
On top of that, WiFi will sometimes stuck at "error" status with no ability to turn it on...
All probably related to the same network chip driver or "Radio"...
I have same network reception problem. When I am in a poor reception area it loose reception all of a sudden and takes a while before getting the signal back. I often toggle flight mode to force network detection. I also think the reception bars don't reflect reality; sometimes it seems I have good 3G reception but cannot surf the web. I fear it is a critical bug. The phone seems unable to handle correctly signal fluctuations and protocol changes (GSM, 3G, HSDPA).
I'm colletting more data about this problem.
First of all I don't have any wifi issue, or maybe I don't see this.
I have a modem with N standard and one with G standard and nothing of this have issue.
About the network issue in this days I never have, only when I'm in office and the signal suck a lot.
Q: Anyone that have Tmobile/mod rom with 1.70 RUU have this issue?

I don't have wifi issue at work with a powerful 802.11n network AP but experienced occasional fake/unstable/disconnect wifi at home with a poor AP which operates on no-one-knows-but-definitely-not-N network. I don't really bother too much cos I can always turn wifi off and on to reconnect.
In terms of 3G/H signal switching problem, yes, a bit annoy especially when playing online game on 3G but accessing internet is fine just need to sometimes wait a bit longer.
I am on international unbranded version in UK.
I've the same problem in France about 3G/2G and wifi on international unbranded version.
A few users reported weak WiFi signal strength on N5. Good WiFi signal strength is very important for me and this is one of things I like on my current SGS, so Im wondering how good is Wlan strength on yours N5 ?
Also Androidizen posted video about WiFi problem:
I received my N5 yesterday and i am facing this weak WiFi signal problem.
I compared it with my Iphone 5.
i was 8 feet away having my back to router, iphone 5 showed full strength signals while N5 showed 3/4 signal strength.
Ive had my nexus 5 for a few days now, and the main thing that is annoying me is the wifi, the signal is so flaky one minute im on full bars, next minute its on 1 or 2, then back to full. this can be in line of sight with the router. Ive tried a few routers at home and at work, same issue. I have tried an iphone, nokia and samsung and they all have a much better range. I'm contemplating taking this back now and getting a refund, as i don't think its acceptable. does anyone else get this constant fluctuation?
I have also noticed when you put your hand over the top of the phone the signal can drop completely. Not taht i do this, but other phones i have do not suffer with this.
i take it not many people are seeing this issue, are others with the phone able to check the wifi range and fluctuations in comparison with other devices. How can it go from full bars to 2, then back to full constantly when other phones are solid. Trying to work out if its worth exchanging for another. Speeds just change from say 72mbs to like 19mbs non stop. Thanks
Side by side with my Nexus 4 I'm getting the same strength and speed.

Do not use the bars when comparing signal.
Download an app that shows you the actual signal level in dbm. Bars can be set to whatever the developer wants. I could make you have full bars at -110 dbm which would be a useless connection, but still show full bars. For the most part, you should disregard them.
Would be possible to boost WiFi reception with a software tweak? Even if Google doesnt provide a fix, could be WiFi signal strength increased in custom roms? I hope some developer will know to answer this.
I have chance to get N5 32gb next week and I really want it, but since Im a lot in other countries, good WiFi signal strength is very important for me (to connect on WiFi hotspots)
Thanx
Is it an issue of signal strength only? Does it ever disconnect you completely? "Strength" would be much less of a concern than disconnects, now THAT would be annoying.

I have read that some N5 owners lost WiFi connection when they were about 10 m away from router. This is unacceptable IMO. I hope software tweak can boost WiFi reception.
I confirm the weak wifi too.
signal
i have nexus 5 16gb white, signal is very very weak!!! i have N4 and GN and have perfect signal!
the problem of weak wifi, is all about the nexus? we have to wait for a fix or should call google and give it back?
I'm facing the same issue. I'm few feets from AP and I'm getting weak and unstable signal. The worse thing is that it is not picking up signal from my main AP (Edimax) at home... It does not "see" the network at all even all other devices at home use it fine.
Very weak signal with this phone, I got full bars on my previous phones in my office but now only 2 bars. If you put your hand near the top of the phone the signal completely drops.
Same issue here, very weak reception. No issues with may tablet or laptops, but Nexus isnt getting good signal. White 32GB.
Yup weak signal. Initially it didn't want to connect to 3g but that was fixed with the service menu. And now I am noticing weak WiFi signal.
I'm guessing this has to do with the antenna.
Its easy to open the phone I'm going to crack it open and see what I find.
Have you folks tried going into your N5's WiFi settings & look under the Advanced submen (press the 3 dots on the lower right of screen)
Tried turning off 5 Ghz band if your router is on the typical 2.4 Ghz band - and if you have the newer dual band N router, enable your 5 Ghz band - could be interferences from other nearby devices or AP ??
Install the free app, Wifi Analayzer from Play Store & run it - take a look at your AP's signal strength, try switching to a less congested channel since the airwaves are shared, regardless which of the 11 channels you are defaulting to ...
Mine is running just fine, -60 to -50 dBm with the N home router behind 2 sheetrock walls.
Compared to my Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy SIII, I have superior Wifi Signal on my Nexus 5 to a very positive surprise...however network drop outs for Cellular connection is quite annoying...
guys try to disable the wifi optimization under advanced wifi setting and set the band to 2.4 . it worked with me :good:
I have to use my 2.4GHz connection because the phone didn't work at all on the 5GHz.
Sent from my Nexus 5
I have this problem too. Sometimes my signal is so weak that it disconnects with the router and falls back on 3G.
I tried everything. Just went into Safe Mode, but Wifi is still weak, it doesnt matter.
I tried to only use 2,4GHz and turned Wifi optimalisation off. Still the same weak signal.
I tested it with the app "Wifi Analyzer" If I stand next to the router it gets about -50dBm. Then I tested it with my brothers Galaxy S2, he got -40dBm. Thats a difference of 10dBm. -40dBm is a stronger signal.
We tried it at the 2nd floor, and he got a better signal again. So it's obviously my Nexus.
Android 4.4.2, stock, no root or something. Google come with a solution please. My previous phone had the same ****ty Wifi (HTC One X).
I have a problem with my Nexus 5 that i would like some help to troubleshoot.
When I'm on cellular network i often have full reception on 4g, when suddenly it drops to absolute zero all of the sudden, data is disconnected and no phone calls can be made during that time. If i wait 10-15sec it is connecting again and up to full strength.
This happens all the time with a few minutes between each time, and has no affect of the location I'm at.
Often I'm just surfing the web when it comes up that this requires internet connection, and notices the bars are gone, and have to wait a few seconds before its back online again.
What would be the best steps to troubleshoot this? Is there any radio log on the phone that i can tail for errors?
Can it be hardware error? Can it be that the simcard looses connection to the hardware?
Im currently running a custom rom, but it was the same with stock when i tried that.
Any help appreciated!

Does it do it on other phoness? I've found that my carrier is updating towers in my area. When T-Mobile US was upgrading their network to LTE and changing panels, literally signal that was once there would be gone for upwards of a week.

No i had a Nexus 4 just before, using the same rom and Provider, worked fine then. Have had this issue for about 1,5 month.
Thanks for the answer though
I'm having exactly the same issue. Though for me it's not happening all the time, only when I'm connected to VPN. It's still very annoying because VPN disconnects when the signal drops.

Flash the latest radio and see if that helps although I think your custom ROM probably has the latest but you never know http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557523
Hey, i'd put this in the cm11 thread but i only have 2 posts so maybe someone else can just either copy what i say and put it there or answer me here.
There are a couple people over there that have had their phone switch back and forth from their network extender to a tower.
I don't have an extender but a guy a few houses down from me does, and when i go near his house my phone goes into roaming mode.
at my house however, since atleast cm11 m6 my signal usually hovers around -110 which is normal for me, i'm a tad far from good service.
yet it'll drop to -1 really often and with doing so cell standby under battery shows that I have like 35% with no service.
i've pulled my sim to have my prl udpated, i've set roaming to home only, and i've set the network type to cmd + lte/evdo.
i've factory reset and nothing has worked.
maybe the strength text in the status bar i'm seeing doesn't mean much and its acting normal, just seems weird since the g2 sitting next to it has constant signal strength of -107 with the same settings selected as my s3.
ok i went and sat in the verizon parking lot and had -83 dBm signal strength and it randomly still went to -1 so the fact that my house is right on the edge of coverage seems to not matter so much.
and idk if this is related but in the play store settings my device is listed with no carrier.
well i ditched cm11 for cleanrom and the issue is no longer present, so i guess its an aosp issue or something.
ok so to try and tackle my issue today I did the following:
triangle away my counter
odin to stock LG1
reprovisioned my phone with *2767*3855#
odin to BMB1 with root, unlocked bootloader, flashed recovery
factory reset / format system, flash cm11 6/8 and gapps
my signal still drops to 0dBm
i've checked my network type and its set to LTE, roaming is automatic, subscription is RUIM/SIM
so i'm assuming this is a bug with the way CM reports signal strength, once it reaches a certain number it just goes to 0 and triggers cell standby in the battery which is why i see that draining at least a quarter of my battery and displays a high time without signal
headed to a strong signal area to see what happens there and I will update this post with my results
EDIT must be my house has the worst coverage, or the phone is trying to connect to a tower on the mountain since I live right at the base of one. 1 city block north/south/west and my signal is fine and never drops out, but as soon as I pull into my driveway, it bounces from 0dBm 99asu to -110dBm 28asu every minute or so as if the signal isn't being handed off to 3g at all. Manually selecting 3g as the network type works fine so I'll just do that while i'm at home on wifi, then manually switch it to lte when needed.
I have this problem with my Z3. I commute to school by train and every now and then I lose signal because of tunnels etc. But the phone is having a hard time recovering signal. Sometimes I have to reboot. Sometimes theres the red X on the SIM icon but usally it's just that there's good signal strenght but no data connection. Other times a reboot doesn't solve it instantly and I'll just have to wait. Or I have to go and manually select my carrier (Tele 2, Sweden) but it doesn't work all the time either. So there's no consistent fix.
Anyone else experiencing the same problem? On my way home 2 stops before mine there's a tunnel where you always lose reception and sometimes I can't even recover it before I get of the train 10 minutes later in an area where you normally have full reception.
I've got a D6603, rooted .77 (PRFCreator). The problem started occuring before rooting. Can't remember if it was before updating to .77 (Had .77, downgraded for root then upgraded again). Carrier is Tele 2 in Sweden.

I also have this issue, when I switch to CM12, the signal back. I don't know why my D5563 can't get data traffic from stock ROM :crying:
I have the same issue but with calls. If my signal is low and I try calling someone no one can hear me and it drops. I am on Telus, stock generic firmware. Going to try reinstalling it once the files finish redownloading.
