I just came from an iPhone 4 and this is my first Android phone (I've used a touchpad with CM9) and I have a fairly simple question which I can't seem to figure out.
When you receive an SMS, or any notification for that matter, the phone will beep or vibrate but the screen remains black.
How can I change the settings to have the screen light up and show the notification I just received like iOS does. I assumed this would just be a standard setting but after searching the phone and internet for about 10 minutes I gave up.
Thank You and sorry for the noobiness. Plz dont kill me I swear im not trolling.

i'm guessing he means without 3rd party apps... in which case, i don't think it's possible - at least until we get custom roms.
that's one thing i really miss about my GSII - that, and BLN. the LED on this HOX is so small, i tend to miss it, even if it's blinking.
So wait, your telling me there's no feature built into ICS that makes any sort of a notification pop up on screen on? That's absolutely ridiculous. What am I supposed to do for push emails? Just listen to the beep and have to go toggle the screen each time I get one to see if its important or not?

you should still get the notifications if your screen is on... i thought you were talking about making SMS and emails light up the display on your screen when the screen is off and you're not using the phone. if you are using the phone, and you get an SMS or email - assuming you are not currently in either of those programs - you should still get a notification.
if you are in fact talking about getting the screen to light up when you receive SMS or email and the screen is off... then yeah, unfortunately, you just have to hear the tone or feel the vibration, and if you miss that, look for the LED. eventually there will be support for making the screen light up, and even BLN (back light notification - where the capacitative keys light up when you receive a SMS or email) - but it's going to take custom kernels for that stuff to happen.

it is kinda bad... for now.
once the bootloaders are unlocked, the real fun will begin, and this stuff will be no problem to implement into custom roms. just gotta be patient for a little bit.

Um, you had to do the same thing with an iPhone. If you missed the initial screen turn on you had to do exactly that. Toggle the screen. Before iOS 5 it was even worse. So calm down and explore your HOX. While you will have to toggle your screen, to make up for it you can customize your lockscreen to quickly allow you to see certain notifications.
If you go to settings -> personalize -> lock screen style and select productivity you'll be able to keep track of your notifications extremely easily.
Otherwise yeah, an easily installed, non-invasive app can quickly fix your problem. If a text makeover isn't what you want check out an app called SMS Flash. It's my favorite least intrusive UI notification pop up. You can't reply from it like you could from SMS Popup or Go SMS Pro pop up notifications, but it does show you them and is slightly customizable.
If you go into the messaging app, then go to settings > notifications. There is an option called notification preview. This will turn on the screen and show you a preview of the SMS you just received.
Also under Personalize > Lockscreen, then select the second option called productivity. This will list all of your active notifications on the screen similar to iOS.
You can also access the notification tray from the lockscreen, provided you don't have any sort of security on (PIN, Pass, Etc).
I also think you're being a bit nit picky about not having the screen light up for every notification. That is just as easy to miss as anything else. You have to be looking at the phone to see that. If I'm working on the computer the sound of a tone or vibrate is much more likely to get my attention. You turn the screen on to check the notification when you're ready... I don't really see a problem. Turning the screen on for anything other than incoming calls/texts seems like a waste of battery to me.
Android is a bit different in that the options aren't centralized. Options for notifications are within each app itself. Some apps (like Facebook app Friendcaster) may include optional popup notifications.

pretty sure that SMS option won't make your screen light up when you receive texts... all it does is place the notification in a square in the middle of your lockscreen, so that when you hit the power button to unlock your phone, you see that square on your lockscreen, rather than having to look for the little icon in the upper left corner of your notification bar.
You get a notification up top....fyi you can pull down the notification bar down and check whatever on the lock screen. You don't actually have to unlock this phone to access notification bar. Love it. My infuse was not the same.

Handcent SMS is a really good messaging app (better than default IMO). It has a setting that turns the screen on when a message is received. I'm not sure about email because I have never bothered to look for an alternative.
@Pirateghost What if you still had the CHOICE to install a 3rd party app that kept your screen off? Everyone has different preferences, and the OP is upset it isn't available in the stock app. Seems reasonable to me.

Agreed.
Secondly, unless the phone is directly in front of you at all times and you're able to see the screen light up right then and there, then I don't see a difference. If the phone is in your pocket and the screen lights up but you failed to hear the notification, you're still screwed.

Hi there been trying loads over the weekend, all the ios7 etc, an awful lot of them have flaws like letting access to the phone through the recent app button. there have been several plus sides as well. At the moment i have found this app "Echo Notification Lockscreen" on the play store. I have also added "iControl(IOS 7 Partner)" but again there were limitations not all the actions will work with this lock screen.
The ultimate which i've not managed was an IOs lock screen (that was actually secure) that let you reply to text messages (and others) without having to unlock the phone (1 app did that but wasn't secure).
Try to use Nils from Google play
Hi again, just a bit more info. I have had another go today at finding the best solution. several sms apps will display on the lock screen but then disapear after a set time, no good if you missed it as it arrived.
I have been playing with the Nils app before and I am unable to get contact pictures to display next to messages, even after trying several sms apps and being in touch with the developer.
But the best I've managed so far is as follows. A app called iOS 7 Lock Screen Theme by huntdevs gives a plain lock screen which can slide to reveal a pin code screen. On the plain screen you can then use NiLS Lockscreen Notifications by Roymam this will then display sms and other notifications on the lockscreen, these remain on the screen untill opened, even if the screen times out and is turned back on manually, furthermore you have the ability to reply to them from within the app whilst still locked.
Warning as I said earlier there is a facility to disable the home button but the recent app button is still active meaning that any apps used recently have the ability to be opened without unlocking the phone. Further more the pin lock screen gives you access to the emergenecy dial function and sadly again where as the default lock screen will only let you dial an emergency number, this app will let you see all of your contacts and further more dial any number you want!!
One final thing the ios7 locker does give you access to the functions of the Iphone from the slide at the bottom of the screen and for me the added advantage of this app over several of the others is that the phone function icon is missing (all be it available through the emergency function).
hope tihs helps.
I use NiLS. I purchased the pro version so i can customize it to my liking and for the ads not to draw my data. It works like a charm, instant, and looks almost stock.

Hi there I see you have the same issue as I have experienced the App refuses to show the contact picture (unless of course you don't use them).
On a further note i have had to uninstall the iOS7 lockscreen, apart from the issues already mentioned, a big down side for me turned out that the app kills sound from the walkman app when the screen goes off, so listening to music, throwing to a sound bar or linking to a car Bluetooth are all muted. So again im back to stock lockscreen with just the Nils app over the top for indication only.
When i first installed the app it would show the users image. I didn't like it so I changed it to App Icon. Oddly, i tried to switch it tot he other 2 settings, and now it does't appear. .. oh well i am not really worried about it. I like the basic icon look instead of the pictures.

The clock and lock screen is all sony stock. NiLS will just add the notification over whatever lock screen you have.
Will it work with a PIN locked screen? There's not much space for notifications actually so I wonder how it would look.

It doesn't the lock screen always starts maximized, Dash clock used to have the option to just have a padlock at the bottom of the screen so your information was always visible when turning on the phone but the latest version of that always starts with the lock pattern or number pad visible and you have to swipe down every time to view notifications and then back up again to unlock your device (there all a pain now with extra strokes needed to use them)

Odd, I know you can resize/change the location of the NiLS. When you have a NiLS message on your lock screen, tap and hold down on the notification to adjust (i had to adjust mine because when it was charging the notification would be on top of the charging percentage)
After installing again and play around I knew my original mistake. Just do not add nils as lockscreen widget. Let nils display notification automatically then I can resize.
BTW will this lockscreen feature notification be part of Android L? Just thinking on buying the nils pro version.

Hey guys, I just got a Note Edge (loving it btw) and was wondering if there are any lock screen replacements with decent notification features (like Snaplock) that also allows unlocking by fingerprint? I quite like the look of the normal TouchWiz lock screen so something like the DashClock Widget would be perfect since it adds notifications by way of widgets instead of a whole lock screen replacement but I just found out that TouchWiz doesn't allow widgets on the lock screen apart from the default digital clock. Can someone offer some suggestions? Either a lock screen replacement that allows fingerprint scanning or some way to allow widgets on the lock screen after I root it. Thanks a lot!

It's already built into the phone and works great for me. I also like how when using PayPal you can swipe your fingerprint to pay. Can't wait till you can lock different apps with the fingerprint, this would be super useful.

Sorry, maybe I didn't explain properly. I've already registered 3 fingerprints and they work quite well in the lock screen (a lot better than what I had read from some accounts prior to purchasing the phone). What I would like is to have notifications on my lock screen like what you'd get on an iPhone or through lock screen replacements like Snaplock or Next Lock Screen. The problem is, when I turn on one of these lock screen replacements in the settings, I get two lock screens. First the replacement lock screen appears with all the notifications and then after unlocking that through either swiping/pattern/pin (they don't support fingerprints), I get the system lock screen which allows me to use my fingerprint. Of course, I can just turn off the system lock screen but like I said, the other lock screen replacements like Snaplock or Next don't support fingerprints.

How can u set up paypal?
With the upgrade to Lollipop, you can now get notifications to show on the lock screen (Settings > Device > Sound and Notifications). Unfortunately, Samsung doesn't allow widgets to be used on the secure (fingerprint, PIN, pass, etc.) lock screens, so I am unable to put a weather widget on my lock screen. And since I have a corporate Exchange email account set up on my phone i can't opt-out of using a secure lock screen.
Like all of the other unfortunate AT&T customers that purchased a Note Edge, I got screwed over without the ability to root my device. I would really like to set my phone up the way I want it, as it should be.
And while i'm *****ing, why can't Samsung set up one of their Edge panels (briefing maybe?) to wake the edge screen and display notifications for SMS messages? Am I missing something, or wouldn't that be an ideal function to have with the edge screen? It's nice that they will allow sms notifications on the main lock screen now via lollipop, but why not put them on the edge screen where they should be on a device such as this?
If i'm missing something and there are ways to resolve my two complains please feel free to fill me in.

Thanks for that. I'm still trying to get my phone to update to Lollipop so maybe that will solve everything. I have a factory unlocked phone bought in Australia so from what I read, the update should've rolled out ages ago but it never seems to see it. Anyways, I'm downloading the update manually now via sammobile so let's see!

Totally agree with you. Even if we don't get whole text messages scrolled across the Edge screen, at least light up a few pixels there to show us there that there are notifications waiting. I have a cover that doesn't allow me to see the notification light next to the logo but has a slit cut out for the Edge so that would be perfect.
This reminds me a lot of older Huawei days I hate with my Mate 8...so I am little bit familiar.. that we have to whitelist.
But can some one tell me what I need to do for the apps that have push notifications ?
Is it 2 or 3 places I need to white list ???
From what I remember from my Huawei days was... I did only whitelist apps that used push notifcation or that was a multimedia app for video or audio, the others dont need to run in the background really..
so the concept are not wrong.. but.. I think vivo software should detect if the app want to use push notifications and ask the user if we want to allow that or not...it would make the set up more simple.
I could probably figure it out myself but this would save time..and also its good information for other new owners of the device. Besides this I am super happy with this Vivo Device, its clear to me that Vivo is the next Huawei, the only bad thing about vivo is their pricing, Vivos brand is not strong outside china so it will take time for them to build up same brand as huawei.

We need to Allow Apps to AutoStart & Run in the Background
Funtouch OS Kills most apps in the background in order to achieve better battery life and you would often find yourself missing notifications from your apps like whatsapp, telegram, instagram, twitter etc. You have to allow them to Autostart & Whitelist them/Allow to run in the background if you want to receive timely notifications. To do so follow the below:
* Settings > More Settings > Permission Management > Autostart (Select your preferred apps)
* Settings > Battery > High Background Power Consumption > Select apps
Allow the apps to continue running in the background so keep receiving notifications instantly.
I recommend most social media apps and messenger apps like Whatsapp, Telegram, Instagram, Twitter along with your Widgets and any other applications that are important for you to keep active.
Hope this helps :fingers-crossed:
that is OK...try using the SofaScore application but not with home wifi network...try with mobile network, I think the notifications in this case are not coming regularly
One more thing I figured out is to make sure background data is on. It is hard to find in the settings. I wasn't getting my email notifications for the stock email app even with all the settings correct.
i somehow found that the background data was off for some reason for that app. Turned it on now everything works great.

What setting couldn't you find? The man settings icon in your app drawer. Press and hold. A pop up should appear. Should say Battery, Data and Wifi. Hit the data. On this page, go to Mobile Data Used. There should be a list of apps that have used data. Find the app you are looking for and make sure background data is on. Or even go through the list and turn off background data to apps you don't want. If the app you are looking for isn't there, try again after you have used the phone for a while. Give the app some time to show up.
This is the only way I know of getting to this setting.

What app are you having issuea with out of curiosity?
I keep having issues with the stock email app. Third party email apps work properly.
Ok, I have a problem with notifications.
It's annoying that you can't drag the notifications screen down from the top in the lockscreen, it only works after you unlock the phone.
Also, some notifications in the lock screen don't fully show, they are also not responsove to touch(as to expanding the notification in the lockscreen to show more info)
I can only see what they say after I unlock the phone, drag the top down and press the little arrow that now appears on the right side of google notifications as in the example pics below
The arrow is not there in lock screen, I can't "expand" notifications in lockscreen...
You understand what I mean???
Lockscreen notification 1 st pic and unlocked screen notification second after I press the little arrow
Same for example when I got multiple whatsapp messages, in other phones in the lock screen I touch the notification in the lockscreen and "drag" it down, it expands to show me the messages, in the Nex this is not possible
Any fix? Thanks
Try remove com.vivo.pem in adb shell.

This is very common issue between Chinese software iOS style like Funtouch,MIUI,EMIU.
They don’t support expandable notifications on lock screen neither option like reply or delete from various app like Viber,WhatsApp,outlook, messenger,Gmail.
You can’t resolve it even with third party app because Google remove with Oreo overlays management on lock screen from third party app.
Only when native being supported by OEM.
Unfortunately Chinese OEM interact badly to core Android OS by removing basic features like expandable notifications.
All other non Chinese skin support this feature(Samsung,LG,Sony etc)
The only Chinese OEM support it is OnePlus because of Oxygen skin being stock based.

But you can’t reply or delete a massage(WhatsApp Viber,Facebook messenger etc)or email(Gmail, outlook)through lock screen since does not let you expand on it.
And if you get long massage with many words characters you can’t read all of the massage but half only, unless unlocked the screen and pull down notifications center.
Vivo software does not support expand notifications on lock screen just like non Chinese android skin.
I had the same issue with Huawei and Xiaomi device when I had it.
Take a look at this screenshot.
I’ve got 3 emails from outlook but I can’t read the details each one also not having option of reply or delete each massage.
The same with Gmail I can’t expand so I can’t read the whole message and just like outlook I can’t delete or reply directly through lock screen.
In both situations I have to unlocked the phone and the pull down notifications center and only then let me do that.

But you can’t reply or delete a massage(WhatsApp Viber,Facebook messenger etc)or email(Gmail, outlook)through lock screen since does not let you expand on it.

Can someone walk me through this? Totally new to Pixel phones. Been using LG for the last 10 years.
I have Nova Launcher installed and it seems to be working properly with no issues.
I'm getting written notifications on my lock screen whenever a YouTube channel I'm subscribed to posts a new video. I don't want that. (This is happening on most of my apps)
In the past with the LG, i'd just get a tiny colored bubble with a number on the app's icon on my home screen. That's what I'm trying to accomplish with the P7P. Is there a way to get the phone to do this?

Just long press on the notification and toggle off notifications.

Thank you!
I've tried that on the lock screen, and it takes me to a page asking me if I want to unsubscribe from notifications from that YouTube channel. Is this correct? I do still want to get a bubble on the app's icon on my home screen letting me know I have unseen content.

Hmm, I don't think so. Have you tried it once you've unlocked the lock screen? Please see screenshot.
Didn't make a difference.
If "notifications “ are turned off, will I still get the little dot on the app icon?
Ok, I may have an idea.
In the notifications settings area....
Pic below, set hide silent notifications from the lock screen. Then long press the notification in the status bar and set them to silent.
They will still show in your status bar and app icon.
Downside to my plan is if you have, for example, text messages set to silent they will no longer show on lock screen if you want that.

Yes, at the bottom of the list of notications, there is an option to have the dot separately.
