[Q] Is updating to Gingerbread worth it?

"Hey there im brand new to this forum and android in general i just switched from an iphone to the Lg G2x. I have to say the G2x is incredible but my battery life isn't i get on average 5 to 6 hrs of battery life (lose about 20% every hour) as others i have installed juice defender ultimate, setcpu, and watchdog. In addition to all these apps i uninstalled apps like T-mobile app pack and wifi calling because these apparently use up a lot of battery. So my question is if there any tips you guys can give me or setting for my phone or apps because maybe i have everything i need installed but with the wrong settings any help at all would be great thank you in advance

That was me a few weeks ago and after all of the suggestions many of the users gave me i only saw maybe like a 20 to 30 minutes improvement of battery life which is not to great because im only getting 6hrs moderate usage out of my Lg G2x so my question is should i install the update because according to lg its supposed to fix my battery issue because from the looks of things ive tried everything i can (Factory restores. removing bloatware, turning off unnecessary things like bluetooth, gps, etc)
Id appreciate any advice or feedback from those who have updated to see if they can confirm they have better battery life in addition it might be helpful to know phone is rooted and unlocked

I admit I didn't read through your entire post, but I recommend updating to gingerbread, then flashing either weapon or eagle blood rom, and then flashing one of the themes by myself and kingdavid. You won't regret it.

I recommend it! You'll get an updated baseband, which fixes GPS and Signal issues.

Battery life is a bit better on gingerbread. If you're trying to get good battery life, I'd recommend flashing CM7, and using SetCPU profiles.

wont stay rooted. Need to flash a rom through cwm. camera is same as nexus gets, its stock camera
Batttery is amazing. Im heavy on the rom changing, had this phone two weeks from my Sensation and it still is stock with the screen animation, but no super user. stock doesnt have tv lock
Oh, im at 30% right now, from mainly stand by and heavy use since 6 pm. its 11:20 pm

How did you update to GB? I heard there were issues with LG/Tmobile update causing a brick?

I used the LG updater tool and had no issues at all. I used it with Windows 7.
And I definitely think its worth the update if only for the updated baseband. I get more consistent signal and much faster GPS locks now.

i was able to do it through the lg support tool without any trouble took about 8 mins

I agree and like the new look but can you help me root it because now that i updated it i have all the t-mobile bloatware and cant use things like cpu tuner

I guess after you update you gotta flash custom rom to get root?

Use the nvflash tool from the dev section to flash cwm back to your phone and then flash whatever rom you want. If you want straight up rooted stock there's one in the dev section you can flash.

Do you mean OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe??? and how eactly do i do that because i opened "OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe" but dnt know where to go from here and should i stick to the stock rom or are other custom ones better ? any you can recommend?

Stock recovery won't allow you to flash custom roms. Flash clockworkmod recovery. Choose the internal option if you want clockworkmod to read files/roms and save backups to your internal memory. Choose the external option if you want it to use your external/removable sdcard. I personally use the external version. Its really up to your preference.

btw the reason why i updated was in hopes of getting better battery life because im getting the same battery life i did before the updated (while rooted and getting rid of bloatware) ) but im wondering that maybe still having t-mobiles bloatware is not letting me experience the improvments but when i called lg recently they said that the update should have fixed my problem with battery life so im also thinking maybe its not the os but some other issue on the phone or the battery itself so do you think i should just send lg my phone so they can check it now so i dont have to unroot it and more later ? (however i didnt purchase it a lg retailer i bought on craigslist is that a problem? )

Call quality and battery life
Thank you for making the SuperLiteRom. I've had a couple of issues with it. The call volume is very quiet, to the point that I have to use speakerphone to hear anyone. Also, I don't remember battery life being so terrible with stock 4.4.2. Even with the same apps that i'm using now.
Has anyone else had these issues?

I wiped the device, did a clean OS install from Odin with NE1. Flashed SuperliteRom over the stock rom slot. Still very quiet audio. I don't know what went wrong.

Is it ok with stock rom? You are the only one who have this issue!

just want to say thank you to mohammad.afaneh for making this superlite ROM. at first i also noticed more battery drainage than usual. i did some reading in the main thread and put the ROM in the stock slot. i ran a battery calibration app and i didnt really see a difference with drainage so i decided to buy a new battery, as mine was around a year old. bought a 7200mAh from amazon. i get at least 3 days on a full charge. idk if the battery calibration app helped with the new battery but it is nice having a few days of charge with moderate to heavy usage. keep up the good work!

Issues with SuperLiteRom on VZW Galaxy S3
Thanks for throwing this guide together! I was able to get this set up correctly.
However, like others, I am having 2 major issues.
Battery is draining incredibly fast. I initially installed on Slot1, but reinstalled on the Stock slot after experiencing poor battery life. It is still dying at an alarming rate (33% in an hour with minimal use). Very unfortunate because I thought this may help my phone's performance by removing bloatware, but something is running strong in the background. Like others, I see Android system using the most power.
Videos lag. Youtube, recorded videos, everything I try to watch freezes and stutters.
Please let me know if anyone has found a solution for these items. I was excited to get ride of the Verizon bloat, but it feels like this was a big mistake. Without solutions to these issues, I don't think this process should be recommended to users seeking to improve their phone experience. At least the disclaimer should be updated.
Its unfortunate now because I'm not sure how to get back to the way I was, now that I overwrote the stock OS.

For those who have installed this rom on the stock rom slot. By doing this it seems to somewhat increase battery life vs a different slot... the known issue. But by putting the new rom in the "stock" location, does that no longer allow you to flash back to stock? In other words locked in this rom. I am finally taking the plunge to put a rom on mine but am becoming more hesitant for the battery issues described here. How bad is it also?
I'm use to my bionic and that safestrap version where I could toggle roms all day long if wanted.

First, you still able to flash back factory stock rom even you used the stock slot location. You must uninstall safestrap first. Currently I'm using litrom and my battery is pretty good. Here how I flashed mine. Installed safestrap, boot to safestrap, wipe cache/davik cache/system, then flash superliterom, once boot up install glowing battery saver, set this on extreme mode and you should be set. Let it run for at least 2 days and you should see the battery is pretty good. If I don't touch my phone, the drain rate is 9+ hrs for 10%. I can't compare screen on time because it depended mainly on each individual using their phone, like if you watch movies or only making phone calls it would sucks less power than if you surfing the internet (not reading articles) or playing games.

Launchers for SUPERLITEROM
1) I love this nimble ROM. Thanks, again.
2) I've flashed to Stock ROM slot. WiFi is muuuch better, but still a little unstable.
3) Does anyone have a favorite launcher that will work with this? Running KK 4.4.2 (I've got Go Launcher EX, which is cool, but the counter stinks.)
4) Is there a recommended replacement for S-voice? I was getting used to that weird android Galaxy lady finding stuff for me while I was driving.

Without a doubt I'd say nova launcher, I've had it for well over two years with nova prime and it's quick and simple yet customizable. I've tried nearly every launcher including go launcher which was my first launcher I used on my old thunderbolt.
Best bet is S Voice, you can use google now also which is a good alternative

Yes it's a launcher, it will work with any rom, it's just like go launcher where as root isn't needed

Quick question RE battery life + 5.0.2

When I tried 5.0 and 5.0.1 ROMs I had severe battery drain problems, so I went back to 4.4.4
I don't have time to waste flashing a ROM which hasn't solved the battery life issue which many (not all, I know, but MANY) people have encountered in Lollipop.
My question is this: NOT referring to your own personal setup, but regarding the N5 community as a whole - is there still a battery life problem prevalent on 5.0.2 ROMs for lots of people?
A simple yes or no will suffice. Thank you.

Yes, there are definitely battery drain issues. I am not too sure it's related to the ROMs themselves but rather the radio. I have tried all Lollipop radios with a very basic set up on both stock ROMs and Cyanogenmod. At some point, I will get idle drain in the region of 2-4% an hour - way higher than I would expect.
There are no wake-locks - the device seems to sleep well - it's just idle drain is horrible. Go back to the radio from 4.4.2 and the drain ceases.
If one more person points to the Battery Life Q&A thread I might swear.

is it possible to use that radio with 5.0.1/2?

Yes, I've not had any compatibility issues with any radio/ROM combo thus far. You can grab the radio image from the within stock factory images here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images or go straight to the radio (in both img and flashable zip format) here http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/Nexus_5/Modems
For ref, KOT49E is the one I use. Technically this is 4.4.1 but 4.4.2 shared the same one.

The KRT16M the 4.4.2? If so i have a flashable zip if you want it

Radios are device-specific and rom-agnostic. You can flash any N5 radio with any rom.

There is no confirmation.
There are too many variables, the biggest being location....
What's better for one can be completely different for another.
Test several for your usage and location. You may also find little or no difference as well
If you are still getting 'drain', narrow down the issue by logic: work out what is actually using the battery, they don't drain by themselves. Apply this thinking to any device

I believe my issue is poor signal at home on my desk causing battery drain overnight. By flashing an older version of radio will this improve my battery life in anyway?

There is no such "drain" in Lollipop. People just have wakelock issues with their own setup, the same as on KK or any version of Android. They simply put the blame on Lollipop and say there is nothing wrong with their wakelock issues.

It's a little narrow-minded to rule out all issues based on personal experience. My device, with current set up, sleeps like a baby. I don't use location services nor social apps like Facebook. My signal strength is fine.
On a Lollipop radio, idle drain after 1 or 2 days uptime will increase to around 4% an hour. On the radio from 4.4.2, my uptime can be a week or two and idle remains at about 1% an hour, everything else being equal.
Radios don't cause wakelocks, enable location services or install Facebook.
I do agree with one thing though - it's not Lollipop itself causing the battery issues. Some problem is deeper than that.

Radio's are an entire different story.
Different ones work better for different people.
Nor are they Android version related - there is no "Lollipop radio", its just a radio version that will work with any version of Android, and was the latest one so it was packaged with the latest factory images. Again, nothing to do with Lollipop

Lethargy I disagree mainly because there are a few bugs in Lollipop that need work to make it a bit more stable. They have pushed the fixes into AOSP for the ones that have been found but it seems like custom ROMs on Lollipop or a majorly tweaked stock ROM do better.
A lot of it too I think is how poor Google Play Services is with battery. I feel like I have to jump through hoops just to get Google Play Services to behave.

This is the only reason I've decided to go back to 4.4.4 as I'm writing this. I seriously have to reboot phone 5 plus times a day. Ashley every time I get into car and maps loads this is like a instant trigger. Maybe I have to many background tasks idk, but it didn't happen on kk...

[BUG?] Mobile radio active battery drain

Since upgrading to lollipop (have tried many roms, from 5.0.2 to 5.1.1, now getting it on Cynaogen OS 12 ) i get really high battery drain because some apps like facebook, sometimes xda keep mobile radio data active until i force close them. Has anyone else noticed this issue or got a clue what might be causing this? Because i was getting this bug on different versions of lollipop with different apps, i think this might rather be a lollipop issue than the fault of apps. I have also tried flashing different modems, nothing helped. I will post screenshots below

A full battery life cycle will only afford me 4-5 hours of use..... heavy use is MUCH worse! Like 3-4 hrs....
Anyone hear of a patch/fix/work around? I am also bone stock without root, never rooted, etc..... only stock updates on COS....

Unfortunately it's a core google OS bug and only google can fix it. It'll happen if you use Mobile Data and there's no solution at all. Either switch to KK or pray that they'll fix it on Android M. Or get used to it like me

Yeah, I've just been using battery save mode and this has been very helpful. Although it does effect performance and gets rid of all the fun animations that make lollipop so enjoyable. It's definitely worth having at least 7-8 hours of use. But, I admit even on battery saver mode I'm noticing extreme battery issues start to effect this profile as well.
Crossing my fingers that Google does roll out a fix of some sort bcuz I'm seeing new apps and Google services show up on my battery stats!

So has anybody been looking at this outside of Google? Some of us are developers, after all, and if the bug is in the Android code and not Google Play Services, we should be able to find it. I haven't seen too many attempts, so far...

I have read from a number of people that only Google can fix this problem since it is a low level android bug. And it is also supposedly in the beta versions of android M as well. The only current solution I have found to this problem is to stay on Kitkat. And not buy a phone that comes stock with lollipop (or M) until this problem is fixed, assuming you want the best battery life, since it is likely that there will not be any KK roms available for any new phone.

As fars as I can tell, the bug should be in code we have access to, so it doesn't have to be Google that fixes it. I've fixed bugs in the Linux kernel before, and it doesn't get any more low level than that...
They have to accept the fix and include it for it to be much use, but that is an entirely separate issue...

Newbie here

Hello everyone I have just joined this forum about two days ago. I own a oneplus one which i found to be one of the finest smartphones until CM12 came along. It seems to me that CM12 ruined battery life of the oneplus. With CM11 battery life was much better, even charging time was not more that 2hrs max. Now I have read the forums that many oneplus owners experienced the same issues.
Now the thing is that I do not have any experience in how to root my my phone or install kernels and other stuff. Is there anything that would help my phone to have a similar battery life of CM11?

Hello everyone I have just joined this forum about two days ago. I own a oneplus one which i found to be one of the finest smartphones until CM12 came along. It seems to me that CM12 ruined battery life of the oneplus. With CM11 battery life was much better, even charging time was not more that 2hrs max. Now I have read the forums that many oneplus owners experienced the same issues.
Now the thing is that I do not have any experience in how to root my my phone or install kernels and other stuff. Is there anything that would help my phone to have a similar battery life of CM11?

I take it you haven't unlocked your boot loader yet?
Unfortunately 5.0+ seems to be a bit poorer in the battery dept for most people. Most are hoping 5.1.1 helps the battery life, if not we'll have to hope for android M whenever that arrives. If you had an unlocked b/loader and custom recovery you could tryout some custom roms. Or even flash a 4.4.4/kitkat rom as many (including myself) have done. I had installed multirom and have been running COS12 as the main rom and CM11S on the secondary. The battery life was/is so much better, I was hitting 5-6hrs screen on time over 2days from a full charge, with lollipop I was hitting 4-5hrs screen on time over 1-1.5 days at a stretch., the standby drain is also a lot more.
If you havent already done so you could try checking privacy guard and denying wake up and keep awake permissions to google play services or anything else that seems to be active a lot in the background that you think shouldnt.

No I never unlocked anything. the phone is just unrooted. What I only is just change themes, which seems also to be buggy. So is it possible to revert back to CM11s? Are COS12 and CM12 the same or different please?

It isnt possible without unlocking your bootloader, see the below guide if you want to look at that option. It seems a lot of hassle but once its unlocked, thats it, it wont lock again unless you specifically go through running a command to do so. As an added advantage you can install a custom recovery which will allow you to make a full nandroid backup, which you can keep on your device or copy over to your PC. You can use this if you ever run into any problems or if you want to try out some other roms, you have the option to go fully restore your last setup.
I dont think I've had any issues with themes, is it one in particular or all, what happens?
I believe we are referring to the same thing, COS12 (Cyanogen OS 12) is what the oneplus one runs out of the box (stock Cyanogen OS). CM12 which is what it also gets called can also mean the CM12/12.1 nightlies, which can be flashed like a custom ROM and are considered the most up to date (on the bleeding edge if you like).
