[Q] Is updating to Gingerbread worth it? - T-Mobile LG G2x

"Hey there im brand new to this forum and android in general i just switched from an iphone to the Lg G2x. I have to say the G2x is incredible but my battery life isn't i get on average 5 to 6 hrs of battery life (lose about 20% every hour) as others i have installed juice defender ultimate, setcpu, and watchdog. In addition to all these apps i uninstalled apps like T-mobile app pack and wifi calling because these apparently use up a lot of battery. So my question is if there any tips you guys can give me or setting for my phone or apps because maybe i have everything i need installed but with the wrong settings any help at all would be great thank you in advance
Info that might help:
As of now the juice defender app reports: 1.36x improvement"
That was me a few weeks ago and after all of the suggestions many of the users gave me i only saw maybe like a 20 to 30 minutes improvement of battery life which is not to great because im only getting 6hrs moderate usage out of my Lg G2x so my question is should i install the update because according to lg its supposed to fix my battery issue because from the looks of things ive tried everything i can (Factory restores. removing bloatware, turning off unnecessary things like bluetooth, gps, etc)
Id appreciate any advice or feedback from those who have updated to see if they can confirm they have better battery life in addition it might be helpful to know phone is rooted and unlocked

I admit I didn't read through your entire post, but I recommend updating to gingerbread, then flashing either weapon or eagle blood rom, and then flashing one of the themes by myself and kingdavid. You won't regret it.
You don't wanna know where this was sent from.

what changes will i get if i get those roms?

I recommend it! You'll get an updated baseband, which fixes GPS and Signal issues.

Battery life is a bit better on gingerbread. If you're trying to get good battery life, I'd recommend flashing CM7, and using SetCPU profiles.

wont stay rooted. Need to flash a rom through cwm. camera is same as nexus gets, its stock camera
Batttery is amazing. Im heavy on the rom changing, had this phone two weeks from my Sensation and it still is stock with the screen animation, but no super user. stock doesnt have tv lock
Oh, im at 30% right now, from mainly stand by and heavy use since 6 pm. its 11:20 pm

@matistight wow thats a amazing battery life thats what im looking for and well thats what i wanted to avoid because im new to android phones so i dont know how to root them is it a big hassle because if it isn't ill go ahead and update and btw if i do update what should i do in preparation before the update?
also what did you mean by " stock doesnt have tv lock "

Just updated my phone to gingernread looks nice but im no longer rooted and dying to get rid of all that bloatware can someone help me root it?

How did you update to GB? I heard there were issues with LG/Tmobile update causing a brick?

I used the LG updater tool and had no issues at all. I used it with Windows 7.
And I definitely think its worth the update if only for the updated baseband. I get more consistent signal and much faster GPS locks now.

i was able to do it through the lg support tool without any trouble took about 8 mins

Use the nvflash tool from the dev section to flash cwm back to your phone and then flash whatever rom you want. If you want straight up rooted stock there's one in the dev section you can flash.

@phburks
Do you mean OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe??? and how eactly do i do that because i opened "OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe" but dnt know where to go from here and should i stick to the stock rom or are other custom ones better ? any you can recommend?

Obviously don't flash CM7 if you don't want to. The begining part tells you how to use nvflash (oneclickrecovery)

Not sure what the file itself is called but its the one from the OP in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Stock recovery won't allow you to flash custom roms. Flash clockworkmod recovery. Choose the internal option if you want clockworkmod to read files/roms and save backups to your internal memory. Choose the external option if you want it to use your external/removable sdcard. I personally use the external version. Its really up to your preference.

@Mister Hat Than you!!!
@phburks
btw the reason why i updated was in hopes of getting better battery life because im getting the same battery life i did before the updated (while rooted and getting rid of bloatware) ) but im wondering that maybe still having t-mobiles bloatware is not letting me experience the improvments but when i called lg recently they said that the update should have fixed my problem with battery life so im also thinking maybe its not the os but some other issue on the phone or the battery itself so do you think i should just send lg my phone so they can check it now so i dont have to unroot it and more later ? (however i didnt purchase it a lg retailer i bought on craigslist is that a problem? )

[Q] Optimus 3d battery woes

Howdy Folks,
I'm new to these parts, but was hopin' to get some advice on my phone.
See, I recently bought an optimus 3d off a guy on kijiji, phone looked good, no scratches, everything in box, etc.
Here's the problem...the battery lasts about 6 hours in standby, and ,maybe 1-2 if I'm using it. (wifi, bluetooth, gps disabled, screen min bright)
Can't get LG to send me a battery as i don't have receipt, and would like to know if it's the battery's fault after all.
Here's why i'm suspicious - with 0 running applications (according to app manager widget) the phone's using more than half it's RAM, and about a third of its CPU (fluctuates around 20-40%)
under "running services" in app settings i have (tried turning all off):
sync service
power control service
android keyboard
Also when i tried running n64oid, it was slow and sluggish as heck, though it should run fine and dandy on my hardware - suggesting a phantom menace of sorts.
Folks have any idea if there's an issue on my phone, or if my battery's just garbage?
-Save me please!, I'd rather not go through the hassle of selling it.
*Oh, one more thing! - In standby the back gets fairly warm, is that normal?

update to latest firmware i.e gingerbread
can't, lg update thing says i have latest update (not from europe)
or is there a way to get around this? i'm a complete noob when it comes to android...(just found out what rooting was 2 days ago)
*nm figured it out, going to try v21b
I was using an extended battery and was still only getting a single day of use out of my O3D. For some reason, and I know how android works, the processes/apps running in the background really bog down the phone. I have had other devices and never had it as bad as my LG G2X and LG Optimus 3D. There has to be something wrong with how LG builds their version of Android. Anyway, it wasn't until I downloaded "Autokiller Memory Optimizer" that I saw a difference. You can set it to automatically kill apps to a set of presets. Meaning how many apps you are willing to let the phone run in the background. Even with the screen off. So I put my original battery back in and I am happy to say I am getting a full 24+ hours out of the old battery! The app is free in the market and there is a paid version too. Just try it and see what you think. I am no noob to the mod scene either. I am also not advertising here. Just letting my fellow O3D users in on what works for me. Right now I am running the acura rom with the 1.2ghz OC but I was using different freq. and they all work well with the Autokiller app.
hmm, well if it's still no good after v21b i might give it a try, though like i said i had nothing visibly running in background.
k, followed instructions as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287236
Phone's now completely toast, lg animation just keeps looping on boot.
-sigh
*did recovery mode, formatted/factory reset, rebooted with great sucess (took a while though)
however for some reason it appears as though my model number changed?
now its the p920
problem resolved, its been in standby for like 30 minutes and power's only dropped 1%

This is the Optimus 3D(p920) development sections and their threads.
oh, in canada the optimus 3d is p925g
I just joined this site to post here... I have this same p925g, same revision of firmware as the OP. I also have the exact same issue since I got this phone.
Basically always idling around %15-30 cpu usage, terrible battery life, nothing running or any extra apps.
Is there anything I can do? When I first got the phone I couldnt believe how bad it was, I think I have to rooted.. or super user... or at least whatever that odd menu is that I installed.
So I believe I can flash it to something, but when I was doing that there was nothing available (learnt from the cyanogenmod site) - but that was 4 months ago at least.
Anyhow, I watched the dumb video when I registred mentioning to specially post in a thread with a similar OP issue.
SO here I am, with ads on Kijiji to swap my 3D Android for a iPhone 4 (for the past 2 months lol) because I cannot stand the battery time.
I can literally kill my phone in an hour and 20 minutes lol. But the biggest problem is it can basically kill itself in 3 hours of use, just texting or what have you.. its pathetic.
I was hoping LG would release 4.0 (and supposedly will)... but I dont want their custom **** on my phone, for some reason the LG "Home" uses a crap load of battery life as it is, probably part of the problem.
Anyhow, My dad got a nexus 2 days ago with the fancy pants 4.0 and it makes my phone look like a nokia from 2004.
Im at my witts end, either I need a different os, a different phone. Or a custom battery pack idea...
thanks for any help |
Edit:
ebay.com/itm/Extended-Battery-Cover-Door-Case-LG-Thrill-4G-P925-3500mAh-/190612531687#ht_2147wt_1392
Found that, 3500 VS the stock 1650 would more than double it, but still... that kinda a last resort band aid approach
I have the Rogers p925g too. The latest firmware we have is V10C, which is what it was released with here. With it, I was averaging about 8-10 hours of moderate use with mostly texting and internet.
Getting tired of Rogers and LG not releasing updates for us, I finally decided to root and put a custom rom, and it made a big difference to me. I had V21A Gingerbread running ThiaiZ V2.4, and got around 18-20 hours. I did end up having some network issues though, so I flashed back to Froyo and installed ThiaiZ V1.5.2. I'm at almost 14 hours now with 20% left, so it's still much improved over the stock V10C.

Try using a CM based ROM - they seem to have much better battery life.
Or if you need 3D, try using a GB Based rom - they have better battery life than froyo ones. Use a custom launcher like launcherpro, go launcher or adw - tehy use less battery than LGHome.
all i did was install v21b (for p920 it turns out) and my battery life is fine now (literally improved standby time by 3000%) , though i still only have around 170mb of ram available, and random applications seem to open for no reason (messaging, maps, google search, etc). plus i dont think it can be rooted.

Try the Thrill 4G Development Forums. There should be quite alot of ROMs there (No GB Though). I don't think P920 GB roms would work due to different basebands (Or at least the phone function won't).
stock v21a is working fine with my p925g. only thing is, after i upgraded i had to boot into recovery mode (holding those 3 buttons)and format/factory reset, then reboot. otherwise lg logo will just loop forever.
i'm gonna try that thai one, sounds like it's more lightweight ( good thing with only half a gig of ram)
I tried using a Thrill ROM (Doomed Froyo) on our p925g, and it installs a lot of AT&T bloatware (though you can delete those), but it also loses the setting of "Enable 2G networks only". I've been much happier with ThiaiZ's Froyo ROM from here.
I'd definitely suggest trying out the v21a or a custom GB ROM, and seeing if you have any data issues or not. Not everyone is having these problems though, so if you don't have them, then a GB ROM would be best, if not, then ThiaiZ's Froyo ROM would be a nice improvement over stock.
Hi guys, Sorry to bump in between a dicussion, but i really need your help.. I am planning to get a new dual core cellphone but i am confused between o2x and o3d.. I wanna go in favour of o3d, but the reviews say that battery back up is really bad. Is it really that bad? whats the maximum battery backup i would get in moderate usage? And also I am a gamer and will b hoping to do a lot of gamin in ma cell.. soplease suggest me which one i should go for.

[Q] Battery Life rooted

I am looking for a rom that handle me using my phone all day and not dying. I would love to find a rom that possibly allowed you to turn off the lte or whatever. As long as i dont have to charge my phone 3 times a day. Can anyone help me out?
many topics posted on this, the search feature is ur friend
My opinion
Seanscreams skyscreamsandwich rom has excellent battery life, I think if you try that with the new UCLA kernel you'll be very happy.
I have the stock Rogers ROM, rooted with CWM installed. I installed updated stock UCLA radio and kernel last week to get the benefits of latest kernel. Worked great but I've never been thrilled with battery life so Saturday I flashed Faux kernel v. 9m I think it was, on top of stock ROM and new updated stock radio.
Installed Set CPU to control new scalable speed kernel. I'm not easy to impress but it's absolutely unbelievable. Set to a conservative profile I've got blazing speed and 50% better battery life after 2 days use.
Go for it but don't do any playing before installing custom recovery ( CWM) and making a Nandroid backup.

The Skyrocket has respectable battery life, consideeing its LTE and 4.5",screen. A ROM is not yoir solution to getting extended battery life out of your phone. While some ROMs are more battery friendly than others, there are better alternatives. Juice Defender seems to be really popular and successful at prolonging battery life.

Needless to say before any of that is done, you wanna make sure the following is done first:
1. Make sure your phone is rooted and have Clockwork mod setup.
2. Do a nandroid backup.
Hope this helps.

Call quality and battery life
Thank you for making the SuperLiteRom. I've had a couple of issues with it. The call volume is very quiet, to the point that I have to use speakerphone to hear anyone. Also, I don't remember battery life being so terrible with stock 4.4.2. Even with the same apps that i'm using now.
Has anyone else had these issues?

Maybe your device speaker need some clean.

just want to say thank you to mohammad.afaneh for making this superlite ROM. at first i also noticed more battery drainage than usual. i did some reading in the main thread and put the ROM in the stock slot. i ran a battery calibration app and i didnt really see a difference with drainage so i decided to buy a new battery, as mine was around a year old. bought a 7200mAh from amazon. i get at least 3 days on a full charge. idk if the battery calibration app helped with the new battery but it is nice having a few days of charge with moderate to heavy usage. keep up the good work!

Issues with SuperLiteRom on VZW Galaxy S3
Thanks for throwing this guide together! I was able to get this set up correctly.
However, like others, I am having 2 major issues.
Battery is draining incredibly fast. I initially installed on Slot1, but reinstalled on the Stock slot after experiencing poor battery life. It is still dying at an alarming rate (33% in an hour with minimal use). Very unfortunate because I thought this may help my phone's performance by removing bloatware, but something is running strong in the background. Like others, I see Android system using the most power.
Videos lag. Youtube, recorded videos, everything I try to watch freezes and stutters.
Please let me know if anyone has found a solution for these items. I was excited to get ride of the Verizon bloat, but it feels like this was a big mistake. Without solutions to these issues, I don't think this process should be recommended to users seeking to improve their phone experience. At least the disclaimer should be updated.
Its unfortunate now because I'm not sure how to get back to the way I was, now that I overwrote the stock OS.
*edit* Adding shot of the Android system that seems to be draining the most battery here (added a space because I'm not allowed to post links) imgur. com/a/Qk7LS
For those who have installed this rom on the stock rom slot. By doing this it seems to somewhat increase battery life vs a different slot... the known issue. But by putting the new rom in the "stock" location, does that no longer allow you to flash back to stock? In other words locked in this rom. I am finally taking the plunge to put a rom on mine but am becoming more hesitant for the battery issues described here. How bad is it also?
I'm use to my bionic and that safestrap version where I could toggle roms all day long if wanted.

First, you still able to flash back factory stock rom even you used the stock slot location. You must uninstall safestrap first. Currently I'm using litrom and my battery is pretty good. Here how I flashed mine. Installed safestrap, boot to safestrap, wipe cache/davik cache/system, then flash superliterom, once boot up install glowing battery saver, set this on extreme mode and you should be set. Let it run for at least 2 days and you should see the battery is pretty good. If I don't touch my phone, the drain rate is 9+ hrs for 10%. I can't compare screen on time because it depended mainly on each individual using their phone, like if you watch movies or only making phone calls it would sucks less power than if you surfing the internet (not reading articles) or playing games.
Launchers for SUPERLITEROM
1) I love this nimble ROM. Thanks, again.
2) I've flashed to Stock ROM slot. WiFi is muuuch better, but still a little unstable.
3) Does anyone have a favorite launcher that will work with this? Running KK 4.4.2 (I've got Go Launcher EX, which is cool, but the counter stinks.)
4) Is there a recommended replacement for S-voice? I was getting used to that weird android Galaxy lady finding stuff for me while I was driving.
Thanks!

Without a doubt I'd say nova launcher, I've had it for well over two years with nova prime and it's quick and simple yet customizable. I've tried nearly every launcher including go launcher which was my first launcher I used on my old thunderbolt.
Best bet is S Voice, you can use google now also which is a good alternative

[Q] Phone is Lagging and Overheating Constantly - Want to Install Custom Rom - Which?

Hi there,
I am sort of new to rooting and have never installed a custom android operating system or ROM yet. I would like to put on something with Android 5.0 if possible, but if none are out yet, which is the best ROM to put on my LG G3, and a tutorial to do it?
I want to use all of the eatures of the phon still as well.
Are there lollipop ROMS out yet for this phone, and if not should I wait for it?
Thank for your help.

I too am using Cloudy and find that the top half of the phone doesn't heat up as much. There's an eco mode you can turn on as well. Not sure it that's what's going the trick, but I've kept it on because the battery life is great now.
As for the lag, have you tried flashing Pure Performance X? It's made all the ROMs I've tried snappier (including Cloudy).

I'm using Viper for my third day now. The first day the battery drained really fast as google processes was raelly active, but the last two days ive gotten over 4 hours of screen on time easily and it's definitely been an improvement over stock for me. I havent played any games but phone did not get hot watching youtube vids.
I am not familiary with pure performance X, looks interesting though.

Regarding official updates

Hi.
It's been 2 months that I have used my one plus one and I still have the original/vanilla build 22R.
Now I'm curious is it worth to update to the newer versions? I have heard so much bad feedback regarding battery life and other bugs.
What are the pro's and con's?
Right now I'm enjoying 3 days battery life, 5h screen time. But microphone gain for videos is bad also for sound recording. WiFi and the antenna for RF seems to be buggy and not working properly.
Thanks in advance,
Zekenka

Just update. Updates are good. Don't listen too much the blaming people cause a lot of them just confuse themselves by doing tests right after the update.
I agree with the previous poster, update your phone, don't worry about the negative Nellies, it's usually user error anyway.

Make sure you do the updates in order, or just flash the complete 44s ROM that you can find also (use search, stock rooted 44s).
Personally I would just flash the complete ROM and skip the incrementals lol

What about the battery life etc? I have heard like terrible stories(ofcourse myabe their nellies) but i kinda like the long one right now and I doubt there will be possibility to rollback unless i unlock my bootloader and install TWRP/CWM .
Battery life is good for me and others I've seen. It is possible to go back to old versions but like you said it requires unlocked boot loader and custom recovery probably. Why don't u want to unlock it?
Most battery problems are caused by wake locks. There's a thread in general by timmaaa called play services battery fix if you have issues. If your phone works good as is and don't care about upgrading then don't lol it's not a requirement. If you have bugs then it's probably fixed in the upgrades. Just don't blame us if you do upgrade though

Would unlocking bootloader cause any stuff related to wakelocks? Right now It is perfect 0 drain over night and no terrible wakelocks,
I remember with daily SGS2 build there were terrible wakelocks with up to 20% drain over night
Unlocking bootloader won't do that. Updating or flashing ROM might, no guarantees. My experience is good with latest update, some others have problems most I would say don't. It's your phone and your choice what to do with it lol.
Just update, dont ask to much. Phone is working great on 44S. You will see when you update, battery life is great for me.
