[Q] Nexus S - Canadian

I just got a new Nexus S purchased from a Rogers store here in Canada.
I am eager to start flashing some new ROM's and such but I have learned some things in the past with my SGS and I really want to make sure I have my stock radio available in case I need to flash it back.
i9020AUCKB2 is my stock modem. I have some newer modems ready to flash but I am worried that it will cripple my 3G connection to Canadian carriers.
I have looked and can't find this modem anywhere. Also I don't know how to back it up myself. I have already done a CWM backup but I have read that this doesn't backup the radio firmware.
Does anyone know how I can easily backup my own radio or where I can download it from?
+1 I've been searching for the last few days info about the exact same thing. I just sold my i9000m and was hoping to flash some new roms with this phone too but not gonna try until I either have a stock odin version of this rom or at the very least the CKB2 modem.
+1 same boat, want to know this too
Just bought Nexus S yesterday Telus baseband I9020AUCKB2.
Rooted and installed CWM 3.0.2.4 and flashed CM7 (Great ROM) baseband remained the same
from what I've been reading in Nexus S dev, Odin is something we should try to avoid if possible. I came from Fascinate T959D and I thought about it but that's probably one of the easiest ways to brick if you don't know EXACTLY what you're flashing and WHAT you're flashing it on.
Odin = last resort
lucidcoin20 glad to hear that flashing CM7 didn't change the baseband, I didn't have the courage to try it. I wouldn't flash just anything with odin but if you can find the right files it will get you out of a mess pretty quick. I agree its not for noobies with no clue what's going on but if Samfirmware comes out with the 9020a rom I'll make sure to have it on my pc for an emergency.
But from my phone wich is a Koodo version (went with them cause they were so cheap outright so I could go just cancel and go back to bell) we all have the At&t version so all Canada is the same. Hope it all works that way so I can go on CM7.
But would still like to learn how to backup the radio file in case I ever need it in the future.
Well I went ahead and flashed KB3. My speeds are less than impressive but I still have 3g with Rogers. Still looking for KB2 though to do some more testing.
Have you tryied KB1 radio, works good for me, i believe it is a US radio.

Flashed KB1 and KB3 and tested using speedtest.com app, three separate times over wifi and cellular network - the KB1 was roughly 10-15% slower than the KB3 for me..
KB3 labelled my radio as "ATT" btw

LMAO did the same thing but for rogers saved $75.
If you look in Q & A forum, there is a post for a clockwork flash, K2B radio, just posted in that forum today. I have flashed the radio, work great fore me.
You can get the KB2 radio file on my thread in the General forum at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13077026
Thanks a lot, I was unaware that the Canadian carriers used KB2. Currently I am using KB3 and I noticed that sometimes the call breaks up, however I am not sure if its the firmware to blame. Does anyone have similar experiences with KB3?
I have tested KB2 and KB3 and my tests are not constant. Sometimes I get only 1MB or less down and up, sometimes I get 5MB down and 3up.
I'm not sure why the tests are so different. I can do the tests one after another in the same place and get completely different results.
I am with Rogers and I am using the Speedtest app. I noticed at one point the speedtest app was connecting to a server in Quebec which made no sense since I am near Toronto. The test results I mentioned above do not take the Quebec tests into consideration.

Flash Radio, the ROM

Looking over the ROMs I notice they seem to always say.
Flash radio
Flash ROM
Why the extra step? Last time I flashed custom ROMs and it has been awhile because ..... I am waiting and waiting for ICS, we used to have one zip file and it contained both.

because there are many different radios ....some work better for others .....to prevent a ril mismatch. u flash the modem. then the rom ......the rom flash will replace the ril. of the modem. so say if u want to use a kj2 modem on a ucla3 rom. well the ucla3 rom with a kj2 modem flash over it would yield a ucla rom. with kj2 modem. and kj2 ril. which may cause wacky data issues..........however if u flash modem first.....then flash rom you will have the base band you just flashed ..but your rom flash will give u the proper ril...
i can not guarantee the mismatch would always cause data issues. however with ucla3 modem it does and has been verified. numerous time.......ucla3 modem needs ucla 3 ril
but if your going to use a ucla3 modem and rom.........u may flash the modem first..if your not currently on ucla3 base band.......as long as you know for sure that said rom has proper ril.

theres a really cool rom called SILVER_ROM_STI you should check out......and a version that flashes the new ucla3 modem with the rom is being uploaded
ok, so what i get is to flash radio, then rom, so that the RIL from the rom is applied. but what is RIL? i'm using a skyrocket on tmobile network and want to use tmobile roms for the wifi calling feature.
in my scenario, what is the best procedure? i do not understand what RIL is and what it does and what it needs to be compatible with.
what i think is the best course is this, please correct me if i am wrong:
flash tmobile radio
flash tmobile rom
flash skyrocket kernel (is this necessary?)
again , i am using the skyrocket on tmobile network and i want to use tmobile roms for wifi calling. i would also like to be able to access tmobile networks at full speed.
thanks!
RIL is radio interface library, its kinda how your rom and radio talk. The method use just described should work, if you loose datacafter flashing the rom just flash the modem again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
data has been weird lately. speedtest is all over the place and typically doesn't go over 500kbps, but i have no issues browing web or streaming music.. i was attributing this issue to the one that is similar to samsung note users, but they have been patching tmobile radios to be used with the note.. im wondering if radios should be patched for the skyrocket
fyi, i do not know what they are patching.
Is it possible to flash the Blaze 4g radio found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1572198
Then flash a rom over it to rewrite the RIL, and see if it works for the i727, or will it brick it?
I'm on T-mobile btw, and still trying to find a good combo. Can't get over 600 kbps DL and over 30 kbps UL

can you provide more information? what rom are you using? i am currently running the blaze radio you mentioned with tmobile tuesday rom with i727 faux kernel. it works. are you sure your speeds are not linked to your location? for instance, at my desk, i see speeds like you... but when i walk away like 50 feet, i get 3mbps.. go figure.
I have tried many combos:
ROM: Juggernaut 5.0, sky-ics
Kernel: faux 9m&u ,10&u
Radio: KID, VLK1, KJ3, LB7 (Blaze)
APN: wap, epc, internet2/3
Isolated 2g and 3g/4g
Everything performed similarly. Right now I'm on Juggernaut 5, faux 10u, and any radio.
I just received it yesterday and I have only been using it at my house so it could be location based.
What I found interesting was when I'm on a phone call and I use the internet, it runs where it should be around 2mb-4mb DL but upload is still weak at 100 kbps UL. Tried it multiple times on different radios, so it doesn't seem to be an isolated incident. Any reason why this is happening?

i wish i knew, but our problems seem in line with that of samsung note users on tmobile. at the end of the day though, it's just a speed test. i have not had problems streaming music (except 8tracks), so all is good enough for me, at the moment..

[Q] Coming from Gnex explain S3 flashing parts?

All,
Coming from Verizon Gnex and I'm reading the Verizon S3 forums and getting a bit confused on the flashing parts of this phone. I see the firmware baseband is "HE" as of a couple of days ago. I also see options to flash the radios and modem? What is the modem for? I never had to flash a modem for my GNEX. Am I missing anything else that I need to flash?
Also, if you would be so kind....I am planning to keep stock for the near future, so after I root and unlock. I need to flash the latest stock ROM which is "HE" then latest radios then modem? What is the latest version of each?
And one last thing, is it the same as GNEX where all I have to do when flashing something is just wipe cache and dalvik cache?
The current verizon updated stock baseband is vrlhe. It includes the most recent modem (radio) from that update. Once you start flashing rom's, the entire portion of the base is dependent on what the developer has built the rom on, and you can choose what radio works best for your phone. Example: synergy R73 is based on vrlg1, but flashing the vrlhe radio with it may give you better cell service.
And, NO on just wiping caches. That's only Ok if updating the same rom, based on the devs guidelines on his updated build. Full wipes between rom's always. It's not a dedicated developers device.
And before you flash anything read the thread in development on backing up your IMEI. There is a bug in this s3 variant that can lose your id when flashing. This is important if you don't want a major headache. And you'll need to unlock your bootloader too
Ha, or maybe he really likes puppies cause he'll end up with a nice chew toy for one...
Thanks for the info guys. And yes, I understand not to dirty flash when switching roms. I usually dirty flash when I'm upgrading from the same rom ie..Bugless Beast...I've dirty flashed the past 4 upgrades.
Was just confused from reading the forums of radios then I see modem....I'm like huh? But got it. Radio=Modem but refer as Radio.

[Q] Modems with new ROMs

Does anyone know if old modems are incompatible with newer ROMs? I just flashed the 2/14 build of SlimLP along with the 44s modem. I was noticing some pretty poor reception. (To be fair, I live somewhere with pretty poor reception) so I thought I would flash some of the other modems to see if I could get a better reception. Every other modem I tried ended up with no reception and the phone process kept quitting. Just wanted to know if anyone knew if the older modems don't work with the newer CM12 based ROMs?
You need to use Lollipop modem for Lollipop ROMs and KitKat modem for KitKat ROMs.

Samsung S4 constantly losing connection, but still shows connected.

My girlfriend's AT&T S4 loses connection, but still shows it connected. So you never know you don't have a connection until you reboot the phone and find that you have missed 2 phone calls, 3 emails, and 15 texts. This happened with the stock Rom. I've tried a couple of different roms, but still the same outcome. I'm thinking I should have to switch to a different modem, but I'm not sure which one to use. Am I wrong and is there another solution? I'm looking for something that will work so I don't have to mess with it again. If anyone has experienced this connection loss and found a solution, please let me know what to do to fix this phone.
definitively you need to update the modem.
2 ways to achieve the update: either by a new rom firmware (http://live.samsung-updates.com/?device=GT-I9505), either by just update gsm modem/wifi fix (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50965837&postcount=2627)
But I strongly suggest before, to look at what your device model is. Mine is S4 LTE international = GT-i9505.
Don't know yours.
Hope that helps.
Ahh... a response. Thank you
So if I change the Rom, that will change the modem too? I thought the modem stayed with the phone and you had to change that separately. This can get so confusing at times. But this is good news never the less. The model number of the phone is GT-i9505G running a custom Rom ( Super-Nexus ) 4.4.4, baseband version 1337UCUFNB1, Kernel version 3.4.0-1125940 [email protected] #1
I hope this information helps you understand what I have so you can find a solution. Thank you for all your help
You're right. changing the rom doesn't update your modem unless you flash a stock firmware via odin. But read carefully as samsung at&t version is specific (meaning specific firmware).
You will find bunch of files by looking at "modem galaxy s4 i337" on xda thread. Depend on what you will find, either only modem/wifi fix either the full stock firmware, you need to update via Odin.
also a good start is to take a look at xda thread > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
And it seems that AT&T already realease some new stock firmware > http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB419415&cv=820&partner=LinkShare&siteId=TnL5HPStwNw-V7YmgDyzwWW7TSi7CwkqtA
I tried a Note 4 Rom first
I have a Note 3, I've had a Note 2 (I loved the macro setting and wished they'd kept it for the Note 3), so I thought I would try the Note 4 Rom on my girlfriend's problematic S4. It got stuck in a boot loop. I ended up using the link you gave me for the stock (but upgraded) AT&T Rom. I see it brought the phone from NB1 to NJ4 firmware. I'm hoping this improvement will solve the problem of a connection loss bring that is a factory firmware upgrade. She can also get OTA updates again. Thank you for your help. Now it's time to find a different Rom for my Nvidia Tegra Note 7. This thing is terribly slow after the upgrade to Lollipop!
Note 4 has a complete different hardware from S4. That's why you had boot loop.
