Best ROM / Kernel for Daily Driver Stability - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I intend to get the OPO as my daily driver, and although the hardware is highly satisfactory, I'm having serious concerns about the stability of the software. I am capable of installing and updating custom kernels and ROMs on the OPO, just that its a slight hassle I would want to avoid if I could.
Stability would be a lack of crashes, reboots, and glitches that get in the way of a smooth, pain free day of normal use. Normal use would include calls, IM, watching YouTube, snapping pics with both front and back cameras, etc.
So, what would be the best way to achieve stability?
Stay on stock everything and wait for updates? Or some combination of ROM and kernel that's already out there?

Stay on stock CM and you'll have no problems.

I'm on stock cm11s version 44s and no stability issues at all. So far I've tried AK kernel and Franco kernel and no issues with them either.
My suggestion is to at least unlock boot loader after you verify there's no hardware issues with your phone and flash twrp then use it as is. That way if you decide to fool around with a different kernel you won't experience having to factory reset and lose everything.
I was like you too and used my phone as daily driver and didn't want any issues, but the more I read at XDA about different kernels and their options eventually I started flashing lol. I've only used those two kernels as daily drivers and they work awesome. They often have updates and fixes that u won't get with cm11s unless you do cm11 nightlies but those could be unstable

Color os and cm are great roms. What kind of stabilities are you worried about?

[Q] Unlocked, rooted, Franco kernel...now what?

Last night I finally mustered the courage to unlock my bootloader, root and flash Franco (which sounds dirty...), mostly for the improved battery life. I installed Greenify and Titanium, and I'm intrigued by Xposed, so I'll probably give that a go...but now what? What are the essential things I should do with my rooted Nexus 5?
My only "parameters" are that I want to stick with stock ROM (unless someone can make a compelling argument otherwise) and that I want to optimize battery life without compromising performance.
Your insights are much appreciated!
Backup and read. We can't advise any more than that.
Other than tibu, the only thing I use root for is an ad blocker, adaway is good.
I started my Nexus 5 with Cataclysm ROM, very close to stock with added features. No updates nightly like others, stays pretty much with Google stock yet the customization is what I needed. I'd check it out to see if it fits your needs. I also flashed the bionic optimization mods since I run ART but dalvik/bionic mods exist since Xposed currently isn't supported on ART (testing to see if any benefits as of now). Franco is good choice for kernel, waiting to see once r33 is released since very good chance of code change and WAY better battery as stated by the beta testers (minus current beta tester reboots and the memory issue). Mostly, since sticking near stock, the combinations of all these are all I personally needed. Make sure of nandroid before flashing since something may happen but I have not run into any issues yet.
+1 what he said ^^

install some system applications - for battery stats, CPU app(if you didn't buy franco's app), wakelock detector. If you are searching to get best battery life without losing performance, you will need to try different kernels (no need to remove and re flash ROM, just flash kernel zip files throught recovery). Essentially, you can try multi ROM feature (there is a thread about it), and try different ROM/kernel combinations, without losing/restoring your data, to find what is best for you. hope this helps

[Q] Improving rom

I know the n5 on cm11 is very fast, but I just wanted to know is there any little tweaks to make the rom even better / faster?

Tring another custom rom can improve the user experience for instance
Some ROMs have a mod to improve the scrolling cache. You can also add some tweaks / features through Xposed, flash a custom kernel and so on... A lot of things to try actually ^^
Hmm better anything to improve performance or smoothness?
a different rom and kernel than cm. i wouldnt ever call cm fast or on top in performance. cm is more bloated then anything else. but if all youre looking for is mods, then cm is good.
Reduce animations, f2fs.

go away from cm
Why? Is other roms drastically faster?
AOSP!
If they are much better, can you tell me why? Also, would you recommend me any rom

Not true. Google's ROM is optimized for certain uses, mainly just general use. Different custom ROMs are developed for different types of uses.
One reason there are no best ROM threads allowed. Different users prefer different ROMs because they use their phones in different ways. It is also part of the fun of experimenting. You can see how different ROMs react to your personal usage and most people usually settle with the one that fits them best, except flashaholics. Had my phone less than a month, went through about five ROMs, 4 custom and stock. Finally settled on slimkat as I like the features.
This also holds true for kernels.
If you want a rom that's basically stock with a few improvements in key areas with great performance and batt life, I suggest going Purity Rom + Code Blue. The kernel is optional as it also works well with Franco

Why is there so much hype towards ROMs and kernels?

Hi all
i had my OPO for 2 months now
and i decided to root my phone and try some custom ROMs and kernels since they're so popular , so last month i rooted my phone and take a spin on those famous ROMs and kernels ( partly is also the touchscreen issue and random reboots are driving me nuts ) i won't specify what ROM or kernel i am using though
first impressions when i had a new ROMs is that , there's nothing much that is different i though things would be faster snappier with a new kernel built in but ...my OPO did not , my phone did get more stable but it did suffer from multigesture issue once and force rebooted 3 times in the span of 1 month , but the biggest issue is that my phone keeps getting systemui has stopped working , multitasking button gets bugged one too many times , wallpapers constantly missing when i unlock my phone and animations are very clunky
so yesterday i decided to go back to stock just to remind myself how stock feels , using NANdroid backup i restored everything and...
stock 44s feels so much better compared to custom ROMs which begs the question
why do people deviate from stock ROM on OPO ? stock cm is pretty sweet , I understand rooting the phone to get xposed etc but custom ROMs just don't feel right on the OPO ...so is it just me ?
still props to all the devs out there , no offense just my 2 cents
I think if varies for the phones and locations, but I was getting some pretty beastly battery life, smooth/fast experience with vanir and Franco. For some reason I just didn't like stock and was not getting as great battery life. I've tried many things and some are good, but there are better (to me at least). I'm just running Lollipop now and can't seem to go back to kk.
It all comes down to ones preference really...

wait , isn't cm12 for OPO currently a little unstable? i really wanted to give it a shot but i fear that it is too unstable for a daily driver
Working fine for me; I don't think it is to the point where it can't be a daily driver. I'm really liking it so far, the Lollipop experience feels really nice and smooth.
Check comments from others on the threads to see the kind of issues they're having. Devs are doing daily builds so as days pass it gets better and better.

Sounds like you didn't do any kernel configurations at all to experience changes.
On AK, with Synapse and UKM, you can change numerical values to configure how the phone handles processes. Default kernel settings aren't optimum for every phone.
My settings consist of: slim (300-2457), CPU boost driver (10ms, 1574MHz, 30ms, 1190MHz), CPU Volt (-35mV), I/O sio @ 1536KB read ahead, drop caches, laptop mode, Vibrator at 25, Fast Charge at 1500mA, C1 (Retention) disabled, 120 second Wifi Scan interval.
With those settings, it makes a HUGE difference compared to stock, as well as fix bugs (screen artifact/tearing) before they were fixed on the latest firmware, and increases battery life by 1.5 times stock.

I have the same questioning but without any problems that you had/have/ My phone works perfectly ( crossing fingers ) and i've had it since July. I always used to ROM my S3-S4-S5 to get a new feel of the phone, but with the Oppo i don't see the reason to. Maybe it's because CM is pretty near pure stock Android, and that's what we get when we switch ROMs on big brands.

OP, it is not just you. Folks who mess about with custom ROMS, as the other posts here share, do so because they can customize the total phone experience, leaving things off, and putting other items on, to their liking. Giving that the background OS is stable, and the apps a person selects are stable, there should be little to no difference in 'performance', overall, due to the apps. However, you may get performance differences because there are less TSR's currently running in your system, so more memory is available, etc, which can make mainline apps run faster.
So many reasons to do custom apps.
As you said, and I agree, CM is a nice, generally smooth OS/ROM. I am coming from an LG G3, which I like very much, but to customize (remove all the junk), and fine tune (remove Google calling home = less battery live, etc), it take's some time to setup those conditions. With CM, most of the junk is not present at the onset (AT&T largely). Much more clean. I would like Google to be disassociated from CM completely, so that it is an add on only, providing better control of the base CM. I would like this in an official CM ROM/official variation.
That is the reason I have/am switching over to the OnePlus. I have tried a few custom ROMs as well, and the stock CM seems to have the best stability, reliability and consistency, to date. I suspect that will change when a large update comes out, such as L, and a great amount of energy goes into that development. I just changed from 38 to 44 last night on three OPO's. It took 5 minutes, or so, a piece, and all of the data/previous apps, setup etc, stayed with the updates, making for an all too easy update.
Awesome. Next will be "L". I will wait for the CM official, as that will likely be the most stable, as I suspect it is getting the most attention from the CM team, at this time. CM is a pretty nice OS.

Best config (Custom ROM, Kernel and etc.) for OPO?

Hi, I have my OPO running LineageOS right now, it runs pretty good but I have some problems with it. Wi-Fi doesn't work good, even games like CarX Drift Racing are laggy. So, I know this question may be asked 100 hundred times in a row and I'm sorry for asking it again but what config (Custom ROM, Kernel and etc.) is best for OPO?

I've no issues with Lineage Os when Gaming, try tweaking it with a custom kernel.
Honestly there is no right answer. I've tried other people's suggestions that "work the best" and I have problems on my phone. Your best bet is to try out different ROMs with various kernels. For instance people usually recommend to try RR (resurrection remix) Rom and lightning kernel. I'm using it right now and have force close problems and lags.
It's up to the user discretion. Everyone has his own taste, I personally prefer LOS with Boeffla kernel.
I'm also on Official LOS with close to no real issues.
But one thing bothers me: i have the impression, that the camera was better on sultans cm, which i used before. currently i use bacon camera app, but i'm not really satisfied. what do you guys think gives the best camera performance on opo?
e: oh and the flash is not that bright as before^^
NitrogenOS is best, balance battery and performance and camera is good
Camera + Battery + Underclocking
Hi guys,
can you give me any recommendations on a rom / kernel config, which gives you the best battery life &/or better camera results.
I also read about underclocking. Do you recommend doing this when prioritizing a good camera and battery life?
I only use my smartphone for whatsapp and reddit most of the time. No gaming and very rarely social media.
Right now i'm using latest nightly LOS Oreo and get my battery replaced soon.

Question New to modding what can I do to improve the phone?

As I stated in the title, how can I improve the overall phone performance, battery life and user experience? I've tried a couple of custom ROMs(PE+ CrDroid, ArrowOS, LineageOS, EvolutionX), and they were good but not satisfactory.
I think I just stepped in a big rabbit hole of configuring my phone and this is the first phone that I'm tinkering, so I'm pretty much clueless after flashing a custom ROM. Now I have so many questions after learning the possibilities.
1- Should I use a custom kernel? What will be the benefits?
2- Any ROM that prioritizes the performance and battery while doing so without any bloat? (Currently using ArrowOS 13.1)
3- What can I do to achieve further improvements to the phone?
I hope you guys can help me, thank you all in advance.
Flash xiaomi Eu rom
It's stock xiaomi rom but modded with removed extra bloatware apps
There is nothing best, you need to test everything and see which stuff is running well for your device. Be very careful doing those stuff, you must know how to recover from soft brick. Welcome to the game of roms and kernels.
as i learned it in the hard way.. be prepared to brick (soft or hard) your device...
1- Should I use a custom kernel? What will be the benefits? normally custom kernels is just "overclocked" settings.. this let you feel a fast device but it consumes more battery and battery life. and stock kernel is always 100% stable... any custome kernel does not have that level of stable... and no custom roms accept bugs with custom kernels.. so if you flash a custom kernel in a custom rom and have random reboots or dead 4g, camera, wifi, bluethoot, etc ... you are gonna be ignore in rom's support.
2- Any ROM that prioritizes the performance and battery while doing so without any bloat? (Currently using ArrowOS 13.1) in my opinion, lineage is the cream of custom roms. You should try all of them at least 1 month each to have a veredict of which is the most you like
3- What can I do to achieve further improvements to the phone? depends on for what do you use your phone... poco x3 pro have a great chipset and ram with great sensors...
we can`t tell you an answer cause (for example) i use my phone only to talk, whatsapp, twitter, 9gag and gcam. i do use bank apps an stuff but my daily apps are those 4 apps since 6-7 years ago.
You're a few years too late.
Back in 2011-2017 there were a lot of custom Tweaks for Kernels to optimize Stuff.
But with Treble/GSI and EAS (Energy aware Sheduling) that stuff has become so optimized out of the Box that you don't really NEED anything. The improvements are just minor.
As long as the OEM doesn't completly **** up. ^^
Also Hardware has become more and more powerfull, so even if it doesn't work perfectly well. You still get a fluid feeling decent rom. Only battery life won't be as awesome as it could be.
That's part of why there are still a lot of Custom ROM's out there, as there are a lot of people with different opinions on what features are essential and need to be built in, but not as many custom Kernels anymore.
Especially since most custom ROM's include their own Tweaks in their Kernel to harmonize perfectly together.
