[Q] Changing DPI of Note Edge - Note Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought a Galaxy Note 4 and saw a Note Edge in a store. Played with it for a while and now I am TEMPTED.
I dug through most of the threads and read the reviews. Got a few questions for existing Note Edge owners. Highly grateful if someone can tip me off with some answers
1). Can you change the DPI of the phone? Say from 640 to 480 via xposed framework? Without messing up the side bar graphics alignment or so? This can be a deal breaker if it doesn't work as I always find stock DPI too high and is a waste of the big screen.
2). Can you see Whatsapp notification details on the Side Bar?
3). Does the Samsung Flip Cover have the smart on off feature? The one that shuts the screen on and off by simply flipping the cover open or close. That would solve the power button placement issue.
4). I read that the screen is not as bright as the Note 4. Is there a big difference?
Too Bad the Note4/Edge batteries are not compatible...
Thanks In Advance!

I have played around with the dpi settings. But the TW launcher doesn't seem to adjust properly with the lower dpi. I changed mine to 520 to test. I might try it again with a different launcher. The graphics are just smaller on the side bar. I have root so I just use a text editor to change the dpi setting in build.prop.
I'll let you know if I find a good dpi setting using a different launcher.

Thanks for trying! Touch Wiz doesn't scale at all so it wouldn't work with changes dpi but the side bar might work. I would use another launcher such as nova or something. If the side bar scale to the new dpi without screwing up the graphics then I am very tempted to buy this phone... If you can, Pls post a screenshot. That would help alot.
Pls let me know. Cheers.

Any luck guys?

LCD Density specific for GT 7+

Anybody try one of the LCD Density modifying apps yet? Tried one but is extremely slow and seems to fail when initiating a reboot start. Really wanna get it running so I can actually use apps developed for the 10 inch tabs, for example the Deodexed Google Movie Studio. I am kinda disappointed in that even though the GT 7.0+ runs Honeycomb, the screen resolution is preventing it from running things like Movie Studio or Photoshop Touch. Also, should I really have to worry about backing up my ROM in case I set the device to a resolution that the boot doesn't like? Only asking cuz it was mentioned in other LCD Density Modding apps. Thanks for any advice or help!!

Absolutely, I tried setting my to 180 and it cause the tablet to go into an infinite boot loop.
the default dpi for 7+ is 160
the biggest number you can got is around 170... more than that... you're screwed...
lowest no i have put on is 120 but the font will be small...

What app were you using? I was using "LCD Density for Root" but it really lagged and I was never able to get it to reboot and apply new resolution settings. I was really only considering using 140 mayybe 120 at most because I just want to able to run apps developed for 10.1" screens REASONABLY comfortable because at standard resolution, buttons become so crowded they render useless and sometimes apps crash because the resolution is not big enough.
i just edit the build.prop manually but if you want to use a program... i suggest for LCD Density Modder by BIRDAPI INC
it requires root...
I hate Tab 7 plus LCD density 'cuz it has nothing to do with its dimensions. It's about a middle way WRONG I guess...
For ex I use ADW Launcher in all of my Android devices. It's perfect on my Xoom and amazing on my Galaxy Note - wich has 300/320dpi - yes its super amoled hd) but it just SUCKS on my P6200!
Drawer's icons are too small and the only way to get 'em right sized is to decrease density to 130 (or something like that, I don't remember right now). Doing that, you'll get all other things f**ked up such as texts or keyboard or keynum pad blaaaaa
I set it to 150 right now and I hate everytime I open Drawer in ADW Ex -.-
The worst thing for me is Honeycomb on this Tab... They could give it Ginger... It should have been treated such as Galaxy Note IMO :banghead:

[Q] 1280x800 vs 1024x600 tablet

Can someone clarify this for me?
The biggest difference between 1280x800 vs 1024x600 tablets are more dots per inch for the 1280x800. So more detailed pixels for same area, so perhaps better picture.
Now I am not sure completely sure if 1280x800 allows more widgets. One of the limitation with 7 inch Galaxy Tab 2 is that screen area does not allow to put more than one 5x4 widgets in the same screen due to screen being 7 inches rather than 10 inches. Now if I get 1280x800 7 inch tablet, such as Nexus Tablet, would it allow me to put more widgets in the same screen? I would greatly appreciate if someone can answer this.
Is there other advantages for having larger 1280x800 resolution than what I have already mentioned?

If you are typing this on a computer, change your resolution and see what happens. That is what the change will look like between two tablets.
Technically the greater resolution doesn't allow more widgets, it's however many spaces your launcher supports. Download Apex and change your homescreen size to something like 8x8 which will allow much more than the default.

Not true at all. Changing the resolution on your computer is completely different due to dpi settings in android. DPI settings in android mean that only the physical size of the device determines the amount of icons. The size of items stay the same regardless of resolution UNLIKE desktop operating systems. A 4 inch phone will have a 4 columns whether its 720p or 320p.

Utilizing Space
With Galaxy Tab 2, I notice that a lot of the space in the screen is not being used. When I try to put widget in that space, it is not allowed. Is this due to the fact that our resolution is not 1280x800?
If that is true, is there any way to use the full space for widgets without buying Nexus 7 tablet or other devices with higher resolution?

I tried to use Apex Launcher, but it does not seem to give me more space for widgets (there are quite a bit of space near the edge that is not being used).
Thank you for the suggestion... Hope we can come up with other solutions.

nexus 6p brighter whiter (better) screen than Gs7 edge.

i have both phone and been playing with them to see if i keep the gs7 edge. It is an amazing phone but one thing i notice and I'm very picky about it is the screen quality. Mostly the whites. I notice that my nexus 6p gets brighter and whiter than s7 edge both in max brighness. While reviews and people will declare Samsung galaxy to have the best screen without testing, i did some. Something that i have seen in the past is that gs5 & gs6 always had a lower end brighnes a whiter screen than its notes brother. Hands down note 5 still have the best screen right now and i believe the same will be for the galaxy note 6 line.
Not very good pics but someone who has both phone can do the same just to confirm this.
BOTH PHONE MAX BRIGHNESS.
Gs7 left & nexus 6p right
EDIT: if you see both side by side the galaxy s7 edge screen looks better because is using super amoled. is so attach to the screen that icons seen to be pupping out of the screen. not the same in the nexus 6p which is amoled and the screen seems way behind the glass. Also looking very closely at the nexus 6p icons i can see sharpness artifact while the galaxy s7 edge screen seems to be using some kind of filter to make icon look smooth without causing any blur to it. They both look has sharp.
I'm using mine in amoled cinema and it doesn't hold a candle to the 6P I had. Which setting did you have your S7E on when you compared?

stock setting which is adaptive. cinema make color more vibrant (punchier). basic and photo does make the screen look yellowish but i was not using those.
edit: you where right changing my color profile from adaptive to cinema make screen brighter and just has white but it add those punchy colors.
They're picking at anything now lol
:good:
Another thing to take into consideration is the bump in brightness that it may do in direct sunlight that goes beyond the max brightness setting. I'm inside right now at work so can't test to be sure but I remember my S6 would punch up the brightness in direct sunlight beyond what I could manually set it to, I think the S7E does the same. I don't remember the 6P being able to do that although I won't argue that for the price, I was impressed with the quality of the screen on the 6P.

6p is nowhere near as good: I have returned 4 of them due to pink screen hue and my current one still has it. Have to use a custom kernel to rid most of it.

In my thread regarding note4 amoled quality, i wrote to displaymate as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/note4-amoled-screen-quality-t2906365
imho, displaymate is a not very usable source, as they test the cherrypicked devices from samsung, they are NOT examining devices from the "open market"... there, 8 out of 10 devices at least have minor or major display errors, although most people wont see them because the lack of comparison!
Ohhhh please. If you try to bash on samsung than get your facts straight.
First of all, to your info Nexus 6P has also Super Amoled from Samsung(if you thought otherwise than you should read more). So there should be little to no difference at all.
S7 edge display is one generation newer since Nexus 6P has the same screen with note 4. Wich is a great screen also without a doubt.
But as the biggest producer and user of Amoled samsung does calibrate the screen in the best way. Better than google or anyone.
Per today S7 edge has the best screen used in a phone so far. Lets see what others will use in the future.
Samsung uses autobrightnes to give all the power in the screen thats because its unessecary to have it on full all the time and that would affect the battery.
So when needed there is no phone in the market with brighter screen.
Sorry for my bad english.
PS. I have both Nexus 6P and S7 Edge 935F. What you are saying is not true.

Lol. Nexus owner? I clearly says that i have a gs7 edge i purchase to keep, stated that the devices is amazing but did notice how whiter the screen look. SHOWED PROOF OF BOTH PHONE WHICH EVERYONE COULD SAY WHAT THEY WILL BUT WHERE IS THEIR PROOF SIDE BY SIDE PICS. Pointed out that icons on gs7 look better not grainy like nexus 6p. Noted that note 5 to me still have the best amoled screen around. I guess galaxy owner get offended so quickly, i have been owner of galaxy s3, S4, S5, S6 3DGE, NOTE 3, NOTE 4, NOTE5 and now galaxy s7 edge with a 6p i had after my note 5 broke and wasnt cover by warranty. Why would i bash it.

I'm a Nexus owner but thinking about selling and getting an S7 Edge.
The S7 hardware, screen and camera are definitely better (although both are good)
The only thing holding me back is the decision to go from Stock Android to Touchwiz. Don't know if I can take 2 email apps, multiple music players, etc. I can't stand bloat or the ugly menus in Touchwiz.

I didn't like Touchwiz back when I had an S3, I just used a Nova and have never looked back. Also Nova let's you hide apps you don't want to see which helps if there's multiple apps for the same function.
I use mine is Basic display mode as I want the closest to real life accurate as possible.
i wish there was a way to control the max brightness even when not in direct sunlight

Didn't like S7 Edge at all.

I have used LG G3 for 2 years then after 1 week of Lg G4 usage found out its battery is thrash ordered myself a 2017 barcoded Samsung G935F.
7.0 Nougat update completed.
Pros:
Good battery endurance.
Does not overheat easily.
Thin and light.
Cons:
Impossible to type while laying in bed or armchair bcs there is no palmguard so you keep pressing home or back button during typing.
Camera isnt better than a g3 or g4 as quality wise.
Fingerprint does not work perfectly.
There is no sound volume slider in drop down menu this sucks as hell.
Most apps and websites are not edge screen compatible so you end up sliding page left or right to read.
Does not have hardware for remote controlling.
Flashlight isnt bright enough.
I am open to suggestions as long as they are meaningful.

Not sure what you mean by not edge compatible. Website and apps work the same way as any flat screen with just a little distortion on the edge but doesn't affect any usability since it's still visible and readable.
Flashlight have 5 level of brightness and level 5 are super bright I start to worry it will burn. Maybe you're on level 1.

Thank you. I have recorded (default settings, did not touch anything) my sister and dad next to sofa and with G4 and S7 in a row and then streamed video to UHD TV, both looked same except S7 was zoomed in so I disabled stabilizator in options and streamed again. It was same quality. Lights, colors everything.

Thank you for your reply.
Fingerprint reader is too fast to judge I guess, I had to re-apply adding finger process several times to make it working more properly.
When I surf the web, some websites' texts are starting from the very edge screen (left) so I can't read first letters of comments or titles. Not sure how to fix that or those websites need to fix it. This does not happen in apps like Youtube or Facebook, must be optimized already.
Sound slider it is shown when I use hardware sound buttons but I would love to see it also next to brightness slider when I drag down the top menu like in LG. I am not allowed to post an image url yet.
This model isn't customized by any carrier and more like an international unit. Only samsung apps are pre-installed.
I didn't know there was levels for brightness, I will check it out and thank you for that. Hope that level is auto applied also to Flashlight shortcut when I enable it.
My biggest problem is to be able to use phone while laying in bed, holding phone on air and typing, some of my hand have to touch hardware buttons and its not solved yet.
I think I need a case to have more space for holding phone on air and type properly.
Thank you guys for your comments. I have searched the web and did not find much about these worries so I had to make a thread.
you know nothing john snow
@fatihso
Sorry. Respectfully Disagree with you..
I`m using this device for almost one year. I don`t have these isssues (specially regarding camera). I`m happy with this device.
+ for the volume slider in notifications! I have it on my ipad but I have to press a physical button on my phone.
I think he's not wrong on that camera part. Believe me I love this phone and its camera. I had a 6P and Note 4 before. Even though I was sure the S7 captured much better pics, lately when I compared 6P and S7, I found the 6P doing better at post processing with HDR mode. S7 oversharpens images and it looks quite horrible sometimes, specially portraits.
And about the clarity thing, yeah 12 megapixels vs 16 megapixels. It shows when zoomed in. But overall S7 camera is much better than other smartphones (taking in consideration video, low light, pro mode etc).
I think in daylight the G4 may take better pics cos of higher resolution (visible when viewed on a bigger screen). Not sure because haven't used a G4 before.
G4 pro mode doesn't compare with s7 edge...try take a pic at midnight with G4 In pro mode at 30s and one with s7 edge at 10s..see who takes it better...LG?
Obvious troll is obvious.
I have this phone for over one year now,its a great phone, but I would like to make my observation about the camera quality too:
its a great camera for scenes for sure, but for human faces, from a bit distance, will blow them out of proportion due to its large pixels letting in too much light in bright conditions.
And also I miss the volume control from the drop down menu without pressing the hardware keys.
everything else is great and I love it a lot.
I have s7 edge for a year now.
Your cons are funny
1) It is possible, maybe you have small hands, that thing doesnt happens to me.
2) Camera is ok, comparing it to g3 is...idk it's silly.
3) If you set up 4x fingerprints 2x left 2x right, make sure you swipe it in all directions. Mine works much better than on marshmallow, 99% of the time.
4) In dropdown menu, you have ringtone, media, notifications and system tones. Where is a problem there?
5) I am using UC browser, no problems in web surfing.
6) IC port missing, the only one annoying thing for me, cant use it as a remote control sometimes.
7) You have free edge app where you can adjust level of flashlight.
The biggest problem for me is the battery after one year. It's capacity is much smaller, and SOT isn't as good when I bought it.

OMG troll kiddie
camera not good LOL
I love the phone but I will admit the camera is no where near as good as my g4.
But I do prefer the s7 edge because it doesn't bootloop. Lol.
Only joking . Apart from the camera the s7 edge is better in every way .

On the finger print sensor, I set both thumbs and both index fingers with multiple angles so I can unlock the phone without having to line up my fingers every time. Other than wet or dirty fingers I haven't had any issues at all. I'm even going to set my touch screen bike gloves as a finger print so I can unlock it when I ride too.
Thank you for replies guys,
It's been like 5 days and I am getting used to the phone. I still don't have any case or alike.
I still have problem typing while on bed. It's not going to be solved without a case to stop my hand touching bottom of the phone while typing in air. My hands are big.
Camera, it has a good camera but in my 1st post I mentioned I recorded a video and then streamed it to TV and I didn't see any difference so it was based on that. I didn't see its worse or better, it felt the same output.
I still would love a volume slider in drop down menu without pressing hardware button. Helps alot if your phone is on table and during watching videos/playing games, you won't need to hold phone and press volume button. Also double tap to lock/unlock phone. I tried some apps but they felt like draining battery after giving them administrative permissions to monitor system.
Anyway, thanks again for your comments.
You had it for 5 days. Man you aren't allowed to speak anything, please.... Use Nova Launcher, standard launcher is annoying. There you can use double tap to lock the phone. And for using it in bed, you just don't know how to.

The s7 camera is decent but it's clearly optimised for low light with a 1.7 aperture where it is superb.
It's all about compromising and Samsung has probably quite rightly assumed that most folks will snap their sprogs and pets often in less than ideal conditions.
As an enthsiast I have taken some great shots and provided links before but I admit that 12mp on a fixed lens camera may be inadequate if you want to crop or print a little larger. Samsungs own S6 resolves better in good light thanks to 16 mp.
I haven't read up about the S8 camera yet but it uses algorithm to supposedly improve.
That's not enough for me so I see if the Note 8 brings something useful to the table (not just camera wise) to make me upgrade. If not its the next iphone or the S9.
Very happy with the S7 otherwise in every respect.

Huge app selection on outer screen

Hi everyone so I've noticed my edge panel app selector is huge on my outer screen I've seen pictures and videos of other people and theirs is properly scales to the screen. Would anyone know why mine is so big? I'm running the US unlocked variant with 400dpi on outer screen and 900 dpi inner screen.
Screenshot
It looks normal. Just Remove some apps if you want a single row.

It takes up to almost 50% of the screen. I've seen others where it looks like my S20 Ultra which is just a small section on the right.
You are comparing to different devices and screens..

I've seen other galaxy fold 2 screenshot where it is scaled similar to my S20 Ultra.
Sorry if I didn't word it correctly.
Without pictures for proof. I don't believe it.
Looks a lot like mine.
Same here
Next Launcher 3.7.3.1
I just can't believe this OLD launcher that's a bit buggy on 8.0> is actually usable on Android 10 on the Fold2 (with the same and a couple more quirks as my V20 on 8.0).
Looks like it's normal. I wish we could scale it to our own liking. Thanks guys.
The issue the OP is complaining from is actaully due to the fact that certain display minimum width values (above a certain threshold) would cause some widgtes(e.g device care widget) and icons to go large (i dont know wheather it's because it triggers tablet mode or not). Try to set display zoom to default values in the settings and it should return to the correct scaling designed natively.
Changing the Dpi doesn't change the pull-out menu..
