[Q] [Help!] Google Messenger issues/Alternative SMS applications - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So on my Nexus 5 the Google Messenger app doesn't show my conversation threads! Does anyone know a fix or an alternative SMS app that's similar to it? I really love the different material design colors it has for separate conversations

Can you post a screen shot to see what you are talking about?(and black out any sensitive information)

I'm using Textra

Remember everyone, the stock messenger is in the play store.

Dark version

Messengers consistency to display messages gets better when battery saver is switched on. For some reason the animations cause it to glitch and not display the conversation thread. I'm happy with it for now but I hope it gets fixed soon.

Are you on a ROM? Make sure you don't have privacy guard enabled on it.

[Q] Any way to customize the text colors in Google Messenger?

I love the material design messenger app, but the randomly assigned colors piss me off. Is there a modded apk or any way to set customize the background color? I would have thought google would have made in an option.
The only way you're going to be able to mod that is by decompiling the messenger apk and going from there. Seems like it would be a lot of work though. I could take a look it at but I doubt I have the know how in order to do it.

Crappy Half-Solution
I've been watching this thread hoping for a more elegant (i.e. code-based solution) but for the time being I found a sort-of work around. First, uninstall the messenger app. Then say you want to change Person A from showing up orange to showing up purple, just for the sake of example. Google image search purple screen (or whatever, the point is to get a plain purple image of a shade similar to the app's). Download the pic to your phone, change the contact's picture to the plain color picture. Reinstall app, and open it up. Person A's conversation should now be purple. It should even be safe to change the contact's picture back, the point is to have the plain color photo as the contact picture when you install and first open up the app. You should be able to change as many contacts to whichever conversation colors (that the app comes preloaded with) you wish. Some notes: I did this on an AT&T galaxy s 4 active running kit kat 4.4.2 with the google messenger app being used as default sms app. My motivation was my gf saw her's was the orange and wanted to figure out a way to switch it to pink, lol. When I figured this method out to do just that, I changed a friend's convo color from green to red, and then an additional friend's from purple to green in order to verify. Again maybe this doesn't work all the time, or maybe it doesn't work on your device or maybe it's too much of a chore, but if you're looking to change conversation colors in this (otherwise very well put-together) app, this is the only way I've heard of so far. Hope this helps :good:
I don't know if it matters but I'm rooted stuck on touchwiz (locked bootloaders are a terrible thing, but at least it's de-odexed and I can mod it myself) and I use root browser to convert the google messenger app to a system app, because I like it better than Samsung's sms anyway.

Best messages app?

Verizons sucks imo. Everytime I try to change a color of a text bubble for my conversations the **** never ****ing saves. Also with the new lollipop update my group.me app has a little dialog box that scrolls down from the top of the screen and shows me the first 7 or so words of the persons message with the ability to reply and or like their comment, I was wondering if any of you know of a texting app with this capability. thanks
Textra
I use evolve, I love being able to reply from the status bar and swipe through different message feeds with quick swipe in for the conversation list. It's also very customizable.
Hangouts. I find it pretty good. Previously had used Handcent but since Hangouts integerates sms, mms and voice, it works great for me.

I guess I created the most customizable Facebook app so far...

Hey guys,
I created a Facebook app called Touch which does currently have the most customization I ever saw in any alternative Facebook app. And I tried many others.
You can enable a full-screen mode, replace the Bottom Bar with tabs and also text tabs, remove the toolbar icons, set custom colors and many other things (like enable an AMOLED mode, tint the navigation bar etc). It also has a special internal browser called "Focused Browsing" and a feature I call "Stories" which helped me rearrange and clear out photos in my gallery while also supporting me in getting posts and pictures ready for Facebook. What I really recommend is also trying out the "Native Posting" feature. If you have the official Facebook app installed, you can post stuff in a native UI that is full of animations and looks and feels great. What I personally also use often is a feature called Tickers which enables me to use Facebook without ever leaving other apps, it works similarly to Chat Heads and is available for all time, notifications and messages. There is actually even more to talk about, I'd really suggest you to try it out

Have you already tried it out?
I will currently check this ou. This seem great for who love personalization like my friends

[How-To] Galaxy S8/S8+ enable edge notifications for all apps

Hello. If you want edge notifications for all apps, you can download and install this app from google play.
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.movisoft.edgelighting&rdid=com.movi soft.edgelighting
It will let you choose app and custom color for notifications. It works by catching old, non edge notifications and replace them with new style notifications. It works even with AOD, so I think it's worth money. Ofc it has few bugs, like if you enable notification and scroll up than back, it shows like it didn't save your settings, but it did. Just set all your apps, turn off app and on and you can see, that it remembered all your settings. I'm using it for Facebook Messenger, Gmail, Email and it works perfect.
Thanks a lot. Really good app. Works almost perfect. Using it for facebook messenger and gmail too. I can confirm AOD notify works too. Worth the money.

Android 11, Messages Chat Bubble

I have a Pixel 3a, and I updated to Android 11 yesterday (official release) OTA update. My phone is completely stock with Developer mode enabled. I noticed that in the notifications for Messages I do not have the option to break it out into the chat bubble (similar to Facebook Messenger). I verified in the notifications settings that I have All conversations can bubble. I am running Google Messages 6.4.044. Has anyone else run into this yet?
Thank you!
I have bubbles enabled and I don't see the option to make text msgs turn into bubbles either. Neither does FB Messenger show the option.
On top of that, everytime I click on the search bar of any Google app, a small text bubble appears which says "null". Weird a** bugs
Edit: Installing Messages Beta fixed the issue for me. It enables bubbles.

Click to collapse
Thank you! If the beta is stable, I'll go that route.
Hi,
Same issue for me regarding bubbles with message and whatsapp.
Bubbles are disabled by default (Messages) or only for selected chats (FB Messenger). So you have to enable first by yourself. Everything is working fine here if enabled properly in the settings.
Bubbles are allowed on my p3a, but I don't see them. I've just installed Messages BĂȘta and same issue [emoji53]
Edit: precisely I have small bubbles at the top of the screen (as notifications used to be previously but different colors) and I'm unable to move them on the screen and to keep them active (like fb messenger)
For those who have the issue, you're not alone
There is a 400+ posts thread on google assistance forum.

Bubbles seem to work fine for Telegram, Google Messages after upgrade to beta and the easter egg cat.
However FB messenger and WhatsApp notifications show no bubble activation icon.
