Motorola is looking for 1000 prerelease software testers.I started to jump on it then I realized I could kiss root goodbye. I am however still sorely tempted. Who knows what pearls could be gained from it.Anyone's thoughts?

Still, somebody should do, good chance there could be an unlocked boot.img in the beta firmware.
Very interesting ...I'm too dependant on root though myself. Mayne someone here on the boards will get there hands on it and give us a peek to look inside and see what it contains!
I wonder if they are going to be pushing it out to their beta testers via OTA or through an actual msi package. I'm sure its ICS they are pre-testing.

Not saying it couldn't happen but its highly doubtful. But stranger things have happened that's for sure
Well what makes me think that, is if something went wrong they would need to downgrade the firmware, typically locked bootloaders dont allow that?
If nothing else, we could end up with an SBF from this.
They're sending updated software via email.
Edit: reread the article, doesn't EXACTLY say that.

I remember them doing something like this for one of the updates for the Atrix 4G. At any rate, I signed up.
Interesting.....
Well I will sign up, and take one for the community.
Thank-you you brave souls! I just can't bring myself to give up root.
Edit: thought about it... wth I signed up.
Sent from my MB865
Nothing really says that you have to give up root....you can always figure out how to root the next ROM...Haven't seen one that was completely unrootable yet.
However the update is put out, someone should save a copy and give it to jim to look at.

Yes, if someone gets a copy, let me have at it, maybe I can find some nugget to help out any hope cracking this phone open.
Signed up also.

I went ahead and signed up...root isn't that important to me plus I'd like to help contribute to making the Atrix 2 better for all of us the only way I can....participating in the prerelease testing.
i think it's a good news.
At least they're starting something for us
It's certainly a good sign. I'm not high tech enough for this.
I signed up, here's to hoping this helps with getting an SBF.
You guys HAVE root! AND, it does not even trip KNOX!! *Update* He just fixed the APK so test it out again if you can. *Update* FIXED & WORKING!

BTW: This is NOT my root method, I am simply informing you of the thread so make sure to thank him over there!
Make sure and read the OP and I would remove Kinguser and switch over to SUPER SU. ( Just my opinion ) He is also working on a Super SU version as well. :good:
Now you guys can come out and play with the T-Mobile & Sprint people! Well, half of the way anyways... :good:

Of course you are! Come on.... I am sure some more simple method will be developed but until then you would want to follow the directions closely. Still in Beta as well and everything is not 100% but I can guarantee he got it rooted! It's just whether you can write to certain partitions or not.

If anyone tries this could you report back on how it goes. I'd be willing to buy a S6 today if this materializes into a true way to root the Verizon s6. I can't tell from the op, but is this root method have wp off? I know someone got root for the turbo a few months ago and it was basically useless.

I've downloaded and installed the APK, but at the moment my phone just shuts off and isn't rooted when I reboot. Gonna keep trying different things and keep an eye on that thread
Doesnt work. I tried on my S6. Just reboots and does nothing.
I can confirm did not work for me phone just reboots but a few people have reported working on vzw s6 this is just in beta phase 1 so hopefully with a update it will become more stable.
This looks promising will be trying this after work today on my vzw s6.

What this is going to give you (if it works on your firmware version) is JUST root. So you will be able to do certain things but you CANNOT flash custom roms cause that has to do with the bootloader, and that bad boy is LOCKED tight. I'm not saying it won't happen but probably not. Hopefully someone starts developing Safestrap again (for this device). I left Verizon long ago because of their crap with locking down phones but I still thought you guys would like to know the info i found, seeing as it's a given that every Verizon device will make it next to impossible to achieve root. The root method for the Turbo was a different kind of exploit but I am pretty sure that this method will at least allow you to do some of the basic "must have" rooting tweaks. ie. Ad blocker, totally removing bloat, Hotspot mods, etc. Best thing to do is follow him over at the link I posted. Hope u guys get this all figured out and remember, this is just in beta right now, so if you can't get root that does not mean 100% for sure that this won't work 4 you. Like I said, follow the brilliant guy that made this all possible. :good:

I have seen a few Verizon guys post success and my friend just successfully rooted his verizon S6 as well. This exploit literally just came out today but I can tell you that the guy working on this has just made root available for a hell of a lot more devices than just the S6! I have seen you over there @jparasita so I know you are probably getting frustrated but hang in there, I'm sure there is a reason that this is happening to a lot of people. Hopefully something simple! Good luck guys!

No frustrations I realise that its only in beta phase 1 so its possible with a simple fix it might become more stable. Plus like you said with this exploit you are only gonna be able to do a few limited things until someone comes along and makes something like safestrap. Plus im pretty sure the system will still be write protected. A lot of hurdles to overcome to fully modify this phone. Can you tell me what kernal date youre friend had that was success?

I'm thinking there will be some good things coming out of this for the whole community. :highfive: :fingers-crossed:
Working now!
Such sad news, I literally got my device today!
The problem for me is that even though I could unlock my device now, the pull of users and developers to this device is going to plummet to zero on xda , there won't be any (or very few) ROM's, adopters will avoid the device... It's a horrible move from huawei who have a sponsor partnership with xda?? Xda have said they're going to fight it but my guess is huawei may look at their wallet rather than their hearts and stick to their guns.
By all accounts it's "to provide a better service". ???
I have a cooling off period for another 13 days.
If things don't change in a week I'm sending this wonderful opportunity phone back.
Never again

Going to give it a chance.

In the same boat mate, received the phone on Wednesday, got the bootloader unlock code sitting in my email index waiting to be used....and now I see this.
In two minds about the whole thing, on one hand love the phone it seems pretty damn great to me, only want to root for 2 issues (not fault of phone, just personal preference) but on the other hand, lack of ability to unlock bootloader will kill the community here. Do I keep it, unlock and just roll with it, or do I send it back and get something else (Galaxy Note or S9+ probably, community there aint dead lol)?
Have to have a good think about it over the weekend I think.

Avoid the galaxy unless you like baggage and more rules, if I was to buy another phone it would be the HTC 12, no doubt about it.
Personally I've used the unlock code twrp installed and I'm rooted.
Phones a beast, I personally think Huawei will decide against their decision, by all accounts HTC did the same and look what happened to them
Currently looking at debranding from the L09 to the L29 as updates are more timely. Either that or wait for some ROMs to drop.
I'm keeping it now, it's swayed me.
Although I'd I could get the HTC I'd do it in a heartbeat, epic development on XDA.

Since the phone is treble enabled we can use GSI. So theres no "real" need to have an active development community dedicated for this phone only.

You don't necessarily need to convert from L09 to L29 to get faster updates, you just need to change region from 782 to 432. The L09 & L29 firmwares are interchangeable and are released together but it's UK specific updates that are lagging behind.
Saying that, I don't think there's a way to convert to 432 without being converted to L29 in the process anyway lol

Keep hold of the bootloader unlock code you got as if they go ahead with removing the service, they're likely to release updates in the future that will relock unlocked bootloaders on install. You should be able to re-unlock with the same code but it's a pain as an update won't wipe data but then having to re-unlock will ?

Just ordered the P20 Pro today after I upgraded my partners one yesterday to the P20. Its looks a fantastic phone so I had to go one better and get the pro. yup. some people may not LIKE that you can't root a phone, but the actual percentage of those that won't actually buy the phone for this reason is minuscule.
otherwise, the first time a phone manufacturer sees their sales actually explode after releasing unlooked bootloaders, they'd always unlock it, but that's simply not the case
Ok I think you're being quite short sighted here, allow me to explain a little.
People who root their phones, usually the same ones who mod and develop ROMs and love a tinker, generally speaking the techie in the family, the one who your family tends to turn to when they have an upgrade come around or need something fixing.
Those very same people are more than likely to recommend a phone which has the ability to root, bootloader unlock and modify than they are one which has a completely locked down eco system.
You can say what you like, you can say I'm full of it, but I've seen how people react to a company changing its principles in regards to bootloader unlocking, HTC did this once, they then reversed their decision after seeing an immediate decline in sales, not solely due to the device either, it was the people's influence which caused it, then after two not so great phones later, they were a struggling company, and make no mistake, HTC was a colossal company which was on the up and up, bare in mind they made a lot of what android is today.
Huawei are making the exact same mistake because they overlooked how important that 1% is and the influence that they have over the vast majority of other users who value their opinion and will commit to a purchase on their say so.
It doesn't matter if you believe me, it's just an observation I've witnessed when HTC made the same decision.
Sure they'll continue, they make other components as well as phones, in all fairness they could stop selling phones and still survive.
But for XDA, for development, for what we know today of Huawei devices? Lol If you think it's quiet here on the p20 pro forum, wait til you see the ghost town of a thread there will be for the p30 and pro, I doubt there will be a single ROM, no Dev would be dumb enough to buy it.
**** I am receiving my phone in 5 days...
Picked up a code just in case anyone I sell it to is interested. Probably won't use it myself.
Huawei is targeting the Apple clientele. They couldn‘t care less about bootloader unlocking. Look at their advertising, their USP is design, camera, beautiful visuals. They don‘t sell to the tech nerd who wants to flash different software.

Damn.
You may still be able to do something , there was a guide on the above link posted by a user which can unlock the bootloader by all accounts.
This phone is quite a beast and there could and should be another way in the future.
Plus Huawei will probably reverse their decision, that's not confirmed by any means but I think they will.
Funky Huawei ( which is normally not what I'd recommend) will probably see a lot more action now that official unlocks are gone too.
Don't worry too much, if it's still possible someone will find out.

Got it
I'm shocked. I received my phone today and wanted to root it and now I read this.
Maybe you guys can help me understand a few things because I haven't tampered with any Android device since 2014.
- will I be fine with the standard pre-installed EMUI or am I missing some really cool and better custom OS when I can't unlock and root my device?
- I've used Xposed, AFWall+, TWRP and XPrivacy on my old phone - are there similar and equally safe tools for unrooted devices?
- How can I make backups without TWRP?
- are there any known workaround procedures known that would let me unlock the bootloader without that code from Huawei? Is it likely that there will be one?
Thanks

How? The link https://emui.huawei.com/en/unlock_detail is down
can't find https://www.emui.com/en/unlock_index either
EDIT: Tried everything. There are too many websites which seems unprofessional and half of them show certificate errors. Finally I wrote them a complaint about this via Mail and provided all the data like IMEI etc

Are there any other options for getting an unlock code at this point? I was thinking about purchasing a P20 Pro but may not if I can't unlock the bootloader.

Same question here. I have my Twilight P20 Pro lying here, unused since release in fact (so way past the return window) and meant to give it to my wife, but only with Root Tools (Adaway, YT Vanced etc.)
I missed the window since I was traveling and support won't help me.
I get it, my fault for not doing it in time but what now? I wouldn't mind paying for it, as the only other option appears to be selling the device at a huge loss (I paid full retail) and finding a different phone altogether.
Title says itt all, but I'm impatient haha Tried reaching out to TMobile on twitter about it, they sent me over to oneplus saying they only do network unlock, then they sent me over to tmobile saying that tmo is the one that does the bootloader unlock code stuff not them. I've relayed both things to each team so they at least know what the other said, but again, like the title says - I don't wanna wait a whole week to get the unlock code so I can flash MicroG'd LineageOS.
Yeah none of us wanted to wait, trust it's been tried.
Maybe it's possible in some weird way - unlikely. It would take longer than a week to try to create some method to unlock without waiting- at that point what's the purpose?
Patience is virtue, also from what I know it is indeed Oneplus who is generating the unlock code for you, after the SIM is unlocked it's out of T-Mobile's hands.
To be fair I'd be willing to bet the one week wait is just an artificial deterrent from people unlocking their bootloader. My smartphone can render complex 3D worlds in high definition in real time. What are the odds it actually takes OnePlus's computers an entire week to generate a simple code? Seems superfluous.

True. Did talk with support though, so maybe I'll get lucky
I think you simply need to promise that you will not try to return the phone for any reason.

Keep me updated on your efforts and hopefully success with the global rom. I have 6 days until I get my token from oneplus. For $200, this is a pretty powerful piece of hardware. Solid build quality as well.
