D6603 on AT&T Not Receiving Calls/Texts (Intermittent) - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have seen similar posts of this issue with the Z3 and Z3C, but I wanted to post my experiences and see if anyone that has this issue has been able to resolve it.
I have an unlocked D6603 that I purchased directly from Sony US. When I received it, I got a new LTE SIM from AT&T, but did not give them the IMEI from the Z3. I activated the SIM and still have my old phone's IMEI listed as the device (LG G3). I inserted the SIM card, downloaded the APN settings, rebooted the phone, and everything was working great.
When I got home from work the next day, my wife said that she had called and sent me text messages that I did not receive. I rebooted the phone and all of her texts (as well as texts from other people) came through. This happens almost every day, and sometimes multiple times in one day. I either have to reboot the phone or change the network settings from LTE to WCDMA for the texts to come through.
One thing just noticed while making an incoming call.. My Z3 has full LTE signal, but when the call is coming in, it immediately switches to HSPA, and when the call is disconnected, it immediately switches back to LTE. Not sure if that's normal behavior or not, but figured I would include it in this post.

Same issues with AT&T. Intermittent calls and texts. It's thanks to AT&T's archaic verification system. Because you don't have a bloated AT&T issued device, you need to keep your old (AT&T issued device) IMEI to be able to get LTE signal for data. If you give them your current Z3 IMEI, you will always receive your texts and calls on time but you will not be able to get LTE because your IMEI is not registered in their database. It's a classic case of a carrier advertising "bring your own devices to our network but we won't load your IMEI so you can access the services you actually pay for", pathetic. T-mobile and Verizon actually offer the device but AT&T won't. Also, AT&T does not offer voice over LTE so your calls will always be 3G (H or H+) when connected and when disconnected your phone will go back to LTE for data. You have two choices with the extortion king, AT&T. Update IMEI and get all calls and texts in a timely matter while forfeiting LTE or leaving your old IMEI and get LTE but miss calls and texts. Ridiculous.

My situation is exactly like the op except i dont miss calls and recieve all my text, so something must not be right, have u tried flashing a differnt ftf?

Multiple, doesn't change anything.

Has anyone tried to use a Z3 IMEI in the last month? I know that when it first came out, it was an unrecognized device for purposes of LTE, but at some point that will change. For example, I am using a Z2's IMEI right now, and that certainly is not an AT&T device.

I changed the IMEI on my AT&T account to match my Z3's IMEI, since I would prefer to receive all of my calls and texts over having LTE. After making the change and rebooting my Z3, I still had an LTE connection and I did not experience the missed calls/texts for a few days. Yesterday, I did not receive any texts or calls so I rebooted the Z3 and texts started coming through. So it appears that using the Z3's IMEI is still preventing calls and texts from arriving.

After adding the Z3's IMEI, it is still showing as an unknown device with AT&T, yet it does get an LTE connection.

I just picked up a Z3 straight from a Sony store last week, stopped by an AT&T store first to get a nano sim which they handed me with no question asked but I didn't activate right away as I still had my ion on....
Once back home inserted the nano sim in the Z3 called AT&T to activate the sim, they sent me a text to verify my account and the settings were downloaded to the phone, they asked me if it was a new phone, just told them no just a new sim in my old phone...right away I noticed that I didn't have LTE at all, so went into the APN setting which were a bit different that what I had in the xperia ion, deleted the APN that was downloaded by AT&T to my phone and entered the ion settings manually into the Z3 and right away LTE was back....not a single problem receiving calls/texts and LTE on full time since then...
APN settings (the difference is in the name of the APN from what was downloaded by AT&T if I recall correctly)

The same issue is affecting me too. I also have the D6603 on AT&T network. Don't bother asking AT&T for help, they will say nothing is wrong w/ their network (which I think is technically correct). This sucks because I was motivated by their bring your own device promotion only to be disappointed that they can't help resolve this issue.
Anyway, turning LTE off made the calls and texts more timely for me. So the easy workaround is to add the LTE toggle quick setting button so you don't need to click a few places to get into settings > more... > mobile network setting > network mode > to turn off LTE. This should default you to WCDMA/GSM when LTE is off by the way. I think the speed is somewhere between 3G and definitely not as fast as LTE, but not unbearable either.
This is still a pain in the butt given that we freaking PAY for LTE, but it's a simple work around (for now at least...)

Did you try setting your apn manually?

I did try your APN settings, which seemed to work at first, but the issue came back after a day or two.
I contacted Sony about it and they are placing the blame on AT&T. They also had me do a software repair using the Sony PC Companion software. I'll have to test it for a day or two to see if I continue to have problems or not.

still receiving calls and texts just fine but can't answer anymore as I have a different problem now...the phone took a dive from a cliff (literally)
First time I drop and break a phone but also first that I buy insurance, took the" protection plus" when I was at the Sony store, kinda hesitated at first but went for it finally, glad I did now, getting a new one mailed and waiting for it to arrive...

My issue was fixed

I had the same problem for the longest time with all official roms and Slipsystem's. I installed the unofficial CM 12 and the problem disappeared. It is something in the official stuff that messes with it.

I'm on att and don't have this issue at all. Store used a s5 imei when i switched

I have to disagree with some of the comments above. I'm on a D6603 in Texas purchased from the Sony online store several months ago. Had to go to a store to get the new sim card anyway and the salesman registered the phone using the IMEI off the box. The Z3 was added as a new phone on the account (I wanted to take my time moving stuff plus I intended to port my old number to Google Voice anyway). I did the setting option to download the APN myself a few minutes later. The Z3 shows as unknown model on ATT online but LTE data works fine and I've had no problems receiving/making calls or messages. So, using the z3's real IMEI is NOT the problem. Perhaps the problem is some setting that doesn't get reset properly when switching an existing phone whereas adding it as a new line avoided that?

@svnyster @augie7107 @pbsteebs @nirvanayoda have you found a solution to this problem?
here's my experience.
1. I have a straight talk sim card (it uses ATT network) and I experience the same problem.
2. My Xperia Z3 D6603 has LTE coverage, but after a while - even with signal at 2/3 bars - it doesn't receive calls or texts until I restart it, switch airplane mode on/off, or toggle LTE/3G.
3. I know for sure this is not related to the rom I'm using: the phone was in stock conditions (kitkat 4.4), then I rooted and installed a debloated stock lollipop rom... still the same problem.
4. I also know that this is not a sim card issue: we have 2 Xperia Z3 phone (one is my wife's). If I swap my sim card in her phone I have no problem, and call and sms get through. So only one of our Z3's is affected by this problem.
5. Finally, the only way I found to work around this was to switch to WCDMA (preferred)/GSM (instead of LTE preferred/WCDMA/GSM). In this case i receive all calls and sms but I have to give up LTE.....
Any thoughts?
Thanks a lot for your help!

I actually ended up switching devices, because I was unable to do my daily work without consistent LTE, and I got tired to switching between LTE and WCDMA.
Everything I read from AT&T shows that the LTE bands they use are 2, 4, 5, and 17, which the D6603 has all of those bands. However, my new device (Samsung Galaxy Note 4) also includes LTE Band 12, which the D6603 does not support. I know that Band 12 is used by T-Mobile, but if AT&T is using this band in certain areas, that could possibly be part of the explanation of why we're having this issue.

Thanks @svnyster!
I also don't think that switching between LTE and WCDMA is acceptable.
But what confuses me is that we have 2 Z3s and only one of them has this problem...
Any idea if unlocking all bands as suggested here would help?

Thanks again.

Pretty sure it has something to do with how AT&T recognizes your IMEI. Check your account and see what icon shows for both devices. If they are different, that's the culprit. I can't get calls and messages with LTE enabled on my Z3. Fine with 3G. My solution was to leave LTE off until I needed it to stream outside of Wi-Fi. AT&T recognizes my IMEI as a flip phone. I have a HTC M9 as well, unbranded edition, and AT&T recognizes the IMEI as a M9 and calls and messages come through immediately even though LTE is switched on.

i've resorted to leaving LTE off and using the H+, which someone explained is sort of like 3.5G but not quite 4G. At times I'll turn LTE on when I want to watch a video and am unable to connect to wi-fi. Sometimes I'll forget to turn LTE off, and find out later friends were trying to reach me but couldn't. As a result, for me, leaving it off is better (so I can be reached for clients or emergencies).
Still, I realize this is unacceptable, but AT&T does not support this phone (or sell it), so at the end of the day, it's my problem for wanting this phone in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I still like it a lot, but this issue and others are becoming a headache that Sony and AT&T could've gotten right from the get go.
Also, I did upgrade the Z3 to Lollipop. I've noticed the battery draining a bit quicker. Instead of having ~50% by end of day, I'm not at 25% levels. Not quite dead, but I still feel the urge to charge mid day when before I didn't have that urge.
Still, I like being able to move (some of) my apps now to the SD card, freeing up the barely 16 GBs on the phone.

No signal execept 911 calls

I picked up a mint verizon s3 local on a trade for some scrap phones I had. So here is my issue. I put in a sim(at&t) and got the switch to global notification but it never gets signal. Phone info shows -120dbm 99asu. Figured since it was free I would play with it and installed hyperdriver rls 16 still nothing. Took everything back to the first stock ics nothing. Currently have it on jb 4.1.1 nothing. I started to wonder if the radio was trashed so I dialed 911 with no sim in the phone and it popped up 3 bars and made the call.
Am I wrong in thinking this phone will work on US networks with a sim? Anyone ran into this problem possibly can maybe point me into a direction to get it working. The phone is clean and not blacklisted and it reads the different sims I have put in it I just can't get any signal to pull up other than an emergency call. I know there is signal my s4 is on the gsm network sitting right next to it.
Thanks in advance, I have been searching since yesterday for a solution.
****update.....Went ahead and took it to 4.1.2 stock and happened to find an old verizon sim. Phone picks up verizons network without issue. Still nothing when using the at&t sim.
It isn't working for AT&T because you haven't set up the appropriate APNs for that network. Google AT&T APNs. Reboot after making the changes. CHECK FOR TYPOS!

I thought I would at minimum show signal even without adding the apn. From everything I have read its talk ready just inserting the sim. Will look at adding apn's this morning.
Final update. Still no joy on getting it to work and I listed it for sale.
There's a thread about getting vzw s3 to work on T-Mobile, I'd imagine you'd need to follow a similar process. And FYI, all phones will call 911, sim, no sim service, no service, they'll call 911. My niece was playing with one of my sisters old, no longer connected phones. All of the sudden police and ambulances showed up. She had dialed 911, they tried to return the call unsuccessfully so they used the phones GPS info and showed up at the house.

Data is gone

will be on phone with AT&T in the morning or via chat with them. I have no access to my mobile data. no explanation, just stopped working. went into my settings for both SIM cards as I have data on both actually, but SIM 1 is the primary one and designated one. Switching settings made no difference. Had it look for network automatically says it's joined already but it's not. no connection, no internet, no Google now, email, nothing. confirmed with AT&T that my data plan is not messed up and still on my account. Was driving and it was end of night so rebooted phone, did not resolve, going to call tomorrow. (As if I have the time but I missed messages I needed to deal with on my break that came in personal email that can't be accessed at work). any suggestions with APN settings I might be missing or something? This is random and weird. Unless somehow data has an outage but you'd think the rep would have told me that. But this needs to be resolved! Don't know if it's AT&T or a phone setting. Was working fine until this morning! Love the phone! anyone? BTW: I just logged on to my account and have an idea: My SIM 1 is from my Note 3 but my account is reflecting that my device is now showing as unknown, so I wonder if this is what is going on. hmm. I'm still getting phone and text messages though. I guess I'm just going to register my SIM 1 now over too as well. maybe that's the issue. my SIM 2 is fully registered to the Pure XL. I guess I'm going online chat tomorrow again. Also, 4G is not showing up now as an available option under network choice either. So I wonder then if it's an outage issue but it's almost midnight here. Will have to chat tomorrow at work somehow with tech support. It's not the issue though with the SIM card from the Note 3 being the cause because SIM 2 is registered under the Pure XL and has a separate data plan, and that one is not working either when I try to temporarily make SIM 2 the data SIM slot. So it must be an AT&T issue. Will have to wait until the morning.

Well, I have learned it is a twofold issue, but importantly, all CARRIER RELATED, not phone related thank goodness. Phone is perfect
1. AT&T did a roving sweep and discovered that my IMEI on SIM 1 was no longer matching, so it turns out that my using the Note 3 SIM was in fact, an issue. I have since had the SIM re-provisioned with the IMEI for SIM 1 now on the Pure XL.
2. However...it turns out that AT&T in my area is in fact having major data network outage problems and that explains why I was unable to log on yesterday even with my properly provisioned SIM 2. And the network is in fact, STILL OUT. So I am still unable to access mobile data and it has NOTHING to do with the phone. It's AT&T all the way. Right now-the network is down. Okay-fine-that happens-they'll fix it. If you call 611 there's an alert saying that. I know stuff happens. That explains why I was getting the weird readouts yesterday that were only showing 2G and 3G on the network. (and I still wasn't getting any connection to data anyway).
So that's what the issue is. The network has been down though more than a day which is ridiculous. They really need to fix that or pro-rate that on our bills then! I'm unable to access personal email from work and rely on my phone and this is a long stretch of time to be offline so they really need to get on the stick and fix this!

Issues on T-Mobile

Recently purchased the Xperia Z5 (E6653) and I am having some serious issues with calls on T-Mobile USA.
Calls don't dial out (or it takes multiple tries) and calls won't come in when the phone is connected to 4g (LTE); they go straight to Voicemail. I missed about 12 phone calls yesterday - just getting voicemail after vaoicemail till I realized something was wrong on my side. If I toggle off the LTE it drops to Edge (no HSPA+) and calls come in fast and outgoing calls are made with no problem.
I tried to reset the phone, then repair the software with the Sony Companion app. Still same issue. Looked online for the APN settings. Tried various ones. Re-downloaded the Internet/MMS via the phone itself. Same issue. Tried my wife's sim and it was still doing the same. I have a spare 5s and it worked fine both incoming and outgoing calls. So, it doesn't seem like its the sim card.
I have Rev 2 of this phone so I am not sure if that is anything to be concerned about. Am I missing something...any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Maybe flash a T-mobile firmware with flashtool?
Or Flash 209 firmware meant for usa?
Or wait for someone here that use this phone on T-mobile.
Are you on band 12 LTE by chance
No, it said band 2 with LTE Discovery. I am on the verge of sending it back. Swap it for another one. Let's see.
From what I have gathered/read - it should really be straight forward. Pop in sim, load Internet settings, and it should work on T-Mobile. The APN settings are correct.
Doesn't makes sense for it to completely not work on 4g and go to 2G (Edge) while skipping 3g. I'm wondering if the baseband might just be wonky. I just see this as causing more problems down the road which I don't want from a $520 device.
Any advice is welcome because I am ordering the same phone again. Lemons are always possible.
Could it be possible because I live a relatively rural area (East TN) and the phone does not support AWS? Since it doesn't support T-Mobile VoLTE and doesn't have AWS it is defaulting to 2G? Is this an issue in all areas or just rural? Apparently the E6683 variant doesn't have this problem as it supports AWS.
Check this http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/10/07/usa-buyers-guide-sony-xperia-z5/
That means ur phone should work fine with T-mobile,maybe go and get a replacement from where you bought it.

Can't call anymore since the motherboard swap

Hallo everyone,
What's up: my Nexus 5 can't make any type of calls.
The story behind: in march the memory chip of my Nexus 5 died, so I let it repair from the official LG support (it was still under guarantee). They changed the whole Motherboard and send me it back. At the same time, I received the new SIM card from my mobile network operator (o2 Germany) because I moved from prepaid to contract, but I still keeped my number.
Since the first day with the repaired Nexus and the new SIM, the LTE worked without problem and I could surf, but I couldn't make a single call. I talkd with the o2 Germany support, and they toldt me that It could have been a problem related to the number porting. After a few weeks the porting was officially completed, but I couldn't still make any call. Then after many weeks and many support calls, I had a so simple Idea...just let's test my o2 SIM on my old Smartphone (an HTC Desire)...and finally I could make a call! So I'm sure that the problem doen't lies on the operator or the SIM.
What's happen exactly with the Nexus 5 and the o2 SIM (here the Video): the LTE Network is full available, I call a number and appears "Dialing" (sometimes the screen turns black without any reason until I press the power button, but not this time), after seconds of absolute no sounds it shows the error "Cellular network not available". Of course I tried to call different numbers, but the problem persist and it still remains, even if I use another SIM from another operator.
I'm really concerned that maybe the problem lies on the Nexus 5 hardware, maybe the antenna, after a bad repair...but that's just what I suppose.
I'm looking forward for your opinions and support, thanks a lot!
Have you taken any steps to troubleshoot?
Seems the issue is the N5, as the SIM is working, but it is unclear where the problem lies. Have you checked the APNs, do they match the ones on HTC device? Maybe try reflashing factory image? Factory reset?
You said LTE is working, so it is not antenna, I think it is a software issue. Start by checking APN.
Thanks for your answer, I will consider the antenna as functional
I have been checking the APN Settings with the same o2 SIM on the two different devices (Nexus 5 and HTC Desire), they are identical, but the Nexus 5 got some extra settings.
As usual, with the Nexus 5 I can't call, but if I move the SIM on the HTC Desire it does. Just using the same dafault APN configuration. Those are the suggested configuration on the official o2 Website, but I would just stick with the default ones that already works (on Desire).
Any suggestion?
I would do a factory reset just a last choice, because I got tons of apps and data that needs time to be reinstalled.
Another info: the LTE Network on the Nexus 5 sometimes disappears, and then appears again.
Bump, any Idea about this problem and how I could fix it?
Hallo, I'm asking again for your support
those last weeks I couldn't get rid of the problem with the calls, and I'm still clueless about how I can fix it. At the end of the month the 2 years guarantee expires, so I need to hurry up.
Summary: SMS sometimes comes later als expected, sometimes LTE Data doen't work, most of the times I can't make calls.
What I have already done:
- already moved my main SIM (o2 Network) from my Nexus 5 on an old device, and there I have no problems at all, and I can make all the calls that I want.
- already checked the APNs, they are all on defaults settings and are ok.
- already tryed to use a fully functional SIM from another network operator (TIM Italy) on my Nexus 5, even if the Network is fully available I can't make any single call.
At this point, I'm pretty sure, that the o2 SIM and the o2 Network itself works fine.
Today I have done a factory reset after a full backup on my Nexus 5. With all default an no extra app there's no improvement at all, call function works only a few times, most of the times I got the Network but the call function doesn't work properly... here just a frash Video about it:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0yEcZCOozgkdmdjZWs0bkdIUnc/view?usp=sharing
After this try the LTE Network has disappeard (here a Foto) coming back only later as EDGE Network.
Could be maybe that after the Nexus 5 repair in march, the Device was assembled incorrectly and the Antenna have an unsteady contact?
Isn't the IMEI stored on the motherboard? If so, its possible you got a motherboard with a blacklisted IMEI.

I don't think that the officially LG Support (that replaced my Nexus 5 Motherboard im march) would use Motherboards with blacklisted IMEIs. Even if my motherboard had a blacklisted IMEI, then I shouln't be able to make any single call, but that's not what happens, because I can still and receive calls sometimes.
Well then I think you already know the answer. The warranty repair wasn't successful. You've eliminated everything else except the phone, and it used to work before, correct?

Yes, sadly seems that the problem lies on the unseccessful repair. Could you reformulate your last sentence/question? I didn't understand what you you mean
Is your phone switching to 3G while calling ? Because afaik, 4G can't be used to call someone.
So I suggest you to force your phone to stay in 3G and try making a call.
When I try to make a call with the LTE (4G, with full coverage showed), the call doesn't succeed (look at the last Video that I posted) and just after this the Network disappears and shows "Mobile Network Not Available" (but this doensn't happen always), then a few second later the LTE is available again.
When I move from LTE to 3G there's no Network available, and the call just doens't work. Same with 2G.
Update: I received back from the LG repairing my Nexus 5. In order to fix the problem with the calls, the entire motherboard was swapped. I didn't received more detailed informations about this fix, but right now it works again greatly.

ATT suspending Huawei phones?

I've just sold my Mate 20X, and I put my ATT sim card in it one last time to make sure everything was fine. When I did so, my ATT service was suspended. I had to get them to re-enable my sim card. Talking to ATT, they said it's because they don't support Huawei phones anymore. I used this phone on ATT as my primary phone a year ago and never had any problems. Did I just miss this?
I'm slightly worried it's because I gave out my IMEI to a prospective buyer, but the ATT rep said there was no problem with it being blacklisted, just that they don't allow Huawei phones on the system anymore. I'm very suspicious of this, so I thought I'd check here.
I'm still using AT&T and T-Mobile on my AL00 without issues

Happened to me after testing my sim card in a S20 FE. When I put it back on my Mate 20 X the service got disconnected. Called AT&T they say because I need to update to a 4G phone. I told them that my Mate is 4G and they reactivated without issues. The rep that attended me didn't told me that Huawei was not being accepted anymore from AT&T, just that needed to make sure it supports 4G.
I did try it out with Tmobile later and had no problems, and the buyer hasn't reported any issues, so it sounds like just bad information. Thanks for the info!

kin USa idiots at ATT .. pss message to them from me pls !
I got a text message today from AT&T saying "we're sending you a phone. if you don't activate it, we will auto activate it after 30 days and your phone you're using now will only be able to call 911"
This is a huge bummer.
I only got that they are retiring 3G, but nothing that says they are suspending supporting The phone as they have NEVER supported the phone, so thats a crock of crap. The only thing they can do is turn off the 3g band and if your phone doesnt use 4G then your SOL. Mate 20X uses 4G LTE so they cant touch me and if they do they have alot more to answer for.
is Tmobile still going to keep supporting it?
At least from a test

That is what I thought BUT I think I found the issue. If you download an app that check the band your phone is using, you will see that for CALLS the 20x with an ATT sim card, will drop to a 3G band not LTE!
Now, if I try a TMobile sim card and make a call, the phone still shows using LTE band so looks like people with TMobile will be able to keep the phone just fine.
I recently experienced the same thing on my Huawei Mate 20x evr-l29. Call AT&t and they unlocked the suspended account and explain to me my phone is registering as a 3G device. I asked them to look at my network history and they clearly see it's using the 4G LTE network without issues. The representative at tech support said they were noting my account to escalate a ticket to not shut off my device come February. She assure me it will continue to work but we will wait and see.
So I was told that, my wife's Mate 20 x had to activate the new sim card because 3G was tied to the previous sim. Was not the case and they suspended the phone number once I activate the new sim (they also sent a refurbished S9 with the sim). I had to call customer service and escalate for them to reactivate the sim card. I'm now waiting to call their "3G Sunset Department" to try to put my phone on a white list (1-800-880-8581). Seems they are only open during business hours so have to call back then. This has not been a good experience.
So I had a fiasco with AT&T. Props to the services techs that had to deal with me in store and over the phone. They kept their cool and customer service up there. I've just been trying to keep my cool over these two days spending alot of time going between different people and then also swapping to another sim being told that would fix it.
Mate 20X is no longer supported by AT&T. In the case of new customers. Basically they have black listed the model and IMEI numbers of these phones. So when a sim card is inserted the phone line associated with it will be suspended.
To get around this you have to call customer support to have them activate the SIM card so that it will work. Phone calls and Data will work after that.
For my wife's phone I used to have unanswered calls and busy get forwarded to her google voice. With the problem above with the IMEI number being technically blacklisted I was not able to set up google voice again. Took me a couple of calls and an escalation to an advanced tech to have them set up call forwarding from their side. After that the phone works as before for now until they shut off 3G data in February.
Educational moment: After I did some searching online and also a good talk with that advanced tech I found out the reason that this phone is identified as 3G. I blame AT&T for the lack of educational material being sent out and the training of their staff on the phone.
Good article explanation: https://www.androidauthority.com/volte-att-t-mobile-1148654/
The Mate 20X is a 3G voice phone. Even though it is a 4G LTE capable phone it is not a VoLTE/HD Voice phone. Hence the reason why this phone was identified as a 3G device. So basically when the cutoff date comes in February, the phone will not be able to make phone calls or receive texts. Technically it should still be capable of using the 4G data but take this with a grain of salt because they basically blacklisted the IMEI/Model of this phone. So they could just force these to not work anymore.
Here's a list from AT&T that will still work after the change to 3G: https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf
This is their current compatibility list for unlocked phones: https://www.att.com/idpassets/image...Capabilities-Unlocked-Devices-ATT-Network.pdf
Meh, actions have consequences...

FYI (and I know this is really a late reply), this is incorrect if you were lucky enough to have unlocked the bootloader on your Mate 20 X (EVR-L29) phone (or if you can do so if the opportunity ever arises again in the future).
Thanks to someone else on this forum (posting about a different huawei phone, I've lost the original poster), I've discovered that it IS in fact possible to enable VoLTE on AT&T (ATT) if your phone is rooted.
Before making these changes attempts to make or receive calls will fail even though data and texts will be working and there is a 4g signal symbol.... and going into settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile network will not have the necessary "VoLTE calls" option to turn VoLTE on.
Simple way to enable VoLTE on rooted Mate 20 X on AT&T:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /
echo "ro.config.hw_volte_on=true" >> /system/build.prop
echo "ro.config.hw_volte_dyn=false" >> /system/build.prop
mount -o ro,remount /
Restart your phone.
The "VoLTE calls" option will now show up, and can be turned on... after which phone calls will again work on the Mate 20 X on AT&T.
I hope this helps someone like it helped me to figure out, even though I know unlocked bootloaders are rare on this phone.
I also couldn't find another phone this size that would work on AT&T (aside from fold ones that I don't want) so really happy that this ended up working.
