I received OTA yesterday and so far found one bug. There is a black screen comes up randomly. Top and bottom bars are visible but I can't do anything to get out of it. The only thing that works is restart. I can't pinpoint the app that might be causing it. It happened while updating apps or using Firefox. Anybody else having this issue?

Did you wipe your cash after updating? I had experienced several bags after the OTA update too, but i cleaned cash from the recovery mode and now everything works just fine.
Did wiped cache from recovery mode yesterday and it was OK. Today the black screen issue is back. It's quite annoying having to restart.

Hi there, I am currently having the same bug on my Nexus 4 device.
It appears the same way, with the Softbuttons visibile and the top bar still able to be pulled down. Plus that there is no option if I restart to get my SIM card recognized. Pretty annoying when you have an encrypted nexus device and have to wait 2 minutes to restart with a 40% chance of NOT getting the black screen again.
My assumption is that it has something to do with the kernel. Any suggestions/confirmations?
Best regards

Same problem here... black screen with only softbuttons visible and notification bar working.
I think the problem occurs when an application is in full screen mode (no softbuttons visible) and you do a little swipe to make the softbuttons appear... It must be something with the way the softbuttons overlap the screen, I think.
Any help?
I am also seeing this problem on my Nexus 5 which I flashed the factory image with full wipe. I have had it when exiting apps and also when an app is open it can just happen. If i swipe up from the bottom sometime I get a flash of the screen during the animation so it is as if a layer is over the screen. I hope this is fixed as it is random, this morning it happened and after a reboot i logged in and it happened before I opened an app, reboot, then happened again a few mins later, but after a 3rd reboot has been ok???
For everyone that is experiencing this problem... do you have Tasker installed?
I disabled tasker and since then I don't have this problem... so far.
Still happening once in awhile and I do have Tasker.

It happens to me. My current theory is that, in my case, it may have to do with a profile manager I use which turns the lock screen pattern lock on and off depending on where I am.

I also have tasker, don't want to disable it as I find it too useful, can you keep us all informed if it cures the issue.

I also find tasker very useful.. but I think it was causing the problem. No more black screens since then.
To try to narrow it down even further... do you have a profile to enable/disable the lockscreen in certain situations?

I do use tasker to disable the lock screen, I wish that the smart lock would completley disable the lock screen, and not just the secure section. I will take all the lock screen options out of my tasks and reboot, will test for a few days.
I tested over the weekend and had no black screens with all tasker/secure settings lock screen disables turned off, I left all other actions on , so I think you are correct. actualy got on OK using the smart unlock, although when in my house sometimes GPS is lost so it will relock, but not a real issue. Thanks for the heads up

I have been using the phone for 2 days and now all of a sudden the lock screen theme with the notifications (Productivity Theme) is not working correctly. The notifications start flickering on the screen and you can not scroll through them. I have tried to reset the phone, increase the brightness and even do a factory reset but it did not fix the problem.
Anyone else experiencing this on their phone? I am not seeing any other flickering issues.
I am actually using the One S but figured its probably a sense thing so i am posting in here.
Thanks!

We haven't the faintest idea try running an RUU and consulting the One S forum.
Im just going to throw this over to the One S forums...
Only for information, i have the same problem in combination with a crashing homescreen when I use the date-overview-widget.
And it seems that we are not alone.
I have an One X and just started having the same issue as well.
Well... I am using the lockscreen wich is more or less empty but once in a while it switches over to the weather-lockscreen on it's own. After a while I can get it to go back to the one I want to use.
I would call that a bug (non intrusive or otherwise non fatal mind you)
Wondering if anyone else is having this problem, and if there's been a fix.
Sometimes, when I go to any app that isn't the home screen, my status and nav bar will disappear. Not completely disappear, mind you--they're just blacked out. I can still pull down the notification shade, and I can still tap the buttons on the nav bar. But I cannot actually see them.
This seems to happen completely at random, sometimes rotating to landscape and back again will fix it. Other times, I'll have to reboot to get it to stop. I've tried getting a screenshot of it, but everything appears just fine in the screenshot itself...

I haven't seen anything like that, it may be particular to your device somehow. Is there any pattern in which apps or types of apps cause the problem?
I thought it had something to do with TeslaLED, so I uninstalled it. But it just crops up completely at random. Even if I haven't used the phone (or used any apps) all day.
Maybe my particular Photon is a lemon. Because now it's beginning to also have Wi-Fi failures.
Xodium did u install argggghhs kernel... if so its a kernel problem u can't run it at 1.89 ghz... I had the same problem with my phone until I figured out the kernel

I am running arggggh's kernel, but this was happening even before I touched the bootloader/recovery/kernel in any way. I am also running it at stock speeds (with the minimum set to 96MHz)
I have photos coming. Hang on...

Hi, my Nexus 5 recently started having this issue where the proximity sensor constantly wakes my phone up. I recently flashed the factory images and the only apps I have that should wake the screen are not actually causing the issue, as far as I can tell.
For example, if I put my phone in my pocket, the screen turns on. If I hold my phone at the top, like when sliding it off a table, the screen turns on. It's bugging the hell out of me and unfortunately, all wakelock apps don't seem to work on KitKat.
Has anyone else had this issue and if you have, have you fixed it yet? If so, how?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Just two things to participate:
1. BetterBatteryStats works on KitKat. There was a beta version but now you can find the public version.
2. Just to be sure try to wipe your user data and try again. You never know...

I switched back to Dalvik and it seems the bug is gone. Now I need to find out which app it was that was causing the issue.
Thanks a lot for your help!
I currently have an N5 which is running PA (4.5 beta2) and Franco (R59) and i seem to come across this issue no matter what version (or combination of versions) i end up using.
The issue - After installing the rom and kernel it will work fine for a week or so and then after that period it will have this issue whereby I press the power button and nothing will happen to the screen, it just stays black but i know the phone is still on because the LED will flash. From this point onwards i usually just reset the phone and then it will work fine for the first maybe 20 mins and then it ends up doing the same thing again.
I know it isnt a problem with the power button itself cause it works totally fine after the phone resets (and im still able to reset the phone using the power button), sometimes the screen will actually power up when i press the button and it shows me my home screen but then fade to a black screen and it just does that over and over again (during that period you cant actually do anything, tried touching screen, volume up+down etc and there is just no response) unless you reset the phone.
any help would be appreciated
It could be one of a few things. Generally it will be an app or a kernel setting. I would recommend ruling out kernel first by flashing ROM without the kernel.

Yeah that definitely seems like a kernel issue. Try just flashing the rim by itself as mentioned above. Also what apps do you have install that deal with display stuff, ex. Lock screen notifications, led light etc.?

Not sure you want to do that
hi guys, im pretty sure i have found the source of the problem now. I normally have the 'Twilight' app (nothing to do with teenage vampires + werewolves) in the background which softens the colours and dims the screen to a level which is more pleasant for the eyes at night. After uninstalling this it seems as though the problem has gone.
I think the app itself projects an overlay on top of the launcher to dim the screen but sometimes when the app is running and the screen is dimmed it seems to block out (unable to tick) some of the pop-up boxes which some programs throw up. Too bad, i really liked the app too, might just have to email the developer and let him know.
Now on to my next problem, anybody know of another app which does similar? lol

OK I was wrong. After uninstalling all the apps which have an effect on my display as well as reinstalling the ROM without the Franco kernel its still having the same issue.
I left a music app running this time and then left the phone till it put itself into sleep/lock mode. The app continued to run and I could change the volume with the side buttons but when i Pressed to get the screen on it just stays black now but it seems as though everything is still running in the background. Anybody had this type of issue with PA before? Thanks
One last question on the kernel, do you have any tweak apps running?

its sod, sleep of death. its not really known what causes it on the n5, but it happens. raising your voltages might help you, as it helps a few, but not all. if it happens that often, id see about an rma after flaahing the factory img to test.
Running beta software, custom kernel... Seems you're in for more that what you've bargained for.
Just do as simms22 says and flash latest factory image.
Hi, for the past two days, I have been having issue with occassional lack of response from the touch screen. Whenever I pressed the power button for a few seconds, I got a list of options: power off, data network mode, flight mode, restart. However, there was no respond when I touched he screen. I just pressed the power button slightly, went somewhere, tried again and the device resumed to normal. what is happening? is there a way to fix this issue without rooting ?
You are without a doubt the unluckiest user I've ever me. Is there anything on our device that does work?!
Mine does sometimes lose touch responsiveness. The pen still works, but touch does nothing. A reboot usually does the trick.
it was working nicely but suddenly I got maps has stopped, follwed by andoid system has stopped message. Then, on the past two days, lost touch screen response. Not sure if the following are related o my problems. 1. I use iBalls as protector of the corners for about a week. Yesterday, not two days ago, I joined the Japanese docom mobile phone services. They made some changes in the settings to allow me to use their 4g and wifi and phone networks. After that, I lost touch screen response more often than two days ago. Is doing a factory reset a good way to solve the problems? I recall that there were two firmware updates.
Well, if one of the corner balls touches the screen, that could kill the responsiveness.
As for the changes they made, those were probably the APN settings. They're required to use the internet and vary per provider. Pull out the SIM, see if that makes a difference.
A factory reset usually solves system errors.

I recall that they did some APN settings. They also set up the Mail connection. Before factory reset, is backing up using keis the best way? I don't kow if keis also backup whatever that have been causing the issues.
The balls just slightly touch the corners sometimes. Do you mean if by chance more than one ball touches a corner, this could confuse the system and cause a lack of respond? Sometimes even there were lots Of battery power, the system did not wake from sleep. It was like there were no power. I had to put the device away and waited for awhile before I could use the device again.
Any backup brings the risk of backing up the issue as well.
I recommend using Helium, back up only the app data you can't live without, do the rest manually and start with a clean device.
And yes, I did notice that if something is constantly pressing the screen, it gets confused sometimes. I had it happen with (you can laugh) my cat, she had her paw on the screen, messed the whole control up.

Well, what apps or games do you not want to lose the data of? Is there a game whose progress took you months to achieve, things like that.S Note and the like can all be synced through your Samsung account, by the way.
Thanks. Will Samsung's software also backup the mails from the mopera email account I got from my phone provider?
Not sure if this is related. I did not use the iBall protector yesterday and there was no problem with the touch screen's responsiveness.

I don't know, I never use KIES.
Test it without the balls for a few more days, if the problem doesn't come back, you've found the culprit.

I've had this happen to mine a couple of times, the hardware buttons still works (even the capacitative ones) but the screens refuses to do anything. The first time it happened was when a small droplet water landed on the screen, and the second time is still a mystery, but a restart solved the problem both times so I suspect it was something I did rather than any hardware issues... Having said that this hadn't happened on any other device I've owned.
