Constant reboot - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My Nexus 5 started acting up all of the sudden earlier today. This morning it was running fine, but after I went and took a shower my phone was off and it won't let me turn it back on. I can't reboot the device, go into recovery or the bootloader. Plugging in my phone is the only way I can get something out of it, but what happens is it turns on to the Google screen, goes black, and repeats. This happens every 2-3 seconds while being plugged in. I've been running one of the Lollipop ROMs (Pure White 5.0 by miseusegua 11/13 build) with Elemantalx 2.03 kernel since 11/13 with no issues at all until today. Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

Might be a harware issue.
But more likely it is a software issue caused by some app misbehaving. Happened to me once on my Xperia Sola. The only solution I found was to flash the stock firmware on my device (wiping everything in the process).
If this does not solve your problem then try to remove the back casing of your nexus and loosen up the power button a bit. My friend's nexus was in bootloop because the power button was somehow constantly being pressed and this left the phone unable to go into any mode. Removing the back cover and fiddling with the stuck power button solved the problem.

That's what I'm attempting to do right now using the SkipSoft toolkit. Everything is downloading at the moment. I honestly think it's a hardware issue though. RIP Nexus 5
*edit: Nevermind, can't even do that because it keeps saying the device can't be detected. Probably because it just keeps turning off/on.

Did you try removing the back cover and fiddling with the power button ? That did solve a similar problem for a friend of mine.

[Q] Bricked Nexus S. Faulty power button?

Hi guys.
I noticed a few weeks ago my power button started to work when it felt like it. Sometimes it would be fine, other times it would take about 30 presses before it registered I was attempting to use it..
Now it has completely failed.
The phone is currently off, whenever I try to press the power button it never turns on. But as soon as I attach a charger to it (AC and USB), without even pressing the power button, the phone vibrates and the google screen flashes up, but never gets past that screen.
If I hold the volume up button as I attach a charger it attempts to enter recovery/bootloader mode(?), but freezes as soon as it comes on. No buttons work and it requires a battery pull to turn it off.
The phone is also not recognised by my computer, or by odin, or anything.
Not really sure what to do. Would try and flash things back to stock, but can't find a way to do that. Not really sure it would help either?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Oh and I looked through current threads and searched on google but I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem :/
It seems, your power button is constantly pressed. Maybe you dropped it? You should try to carefully move the button in every direction instead of pressing it, hopefully it clicks back to its right place. Other option is taking it back to the shop, and get it repaired. It's a hadware problem, so you won't be able to use neither recovery nor the ROM. The bright side is, that probably it's an easily repairable problem, and won't take too long

I was on an ICS ROM, can't remember which one, but the button started playing up when I was on a GB ROM..
Here's hoping the button just suddenly starts working though.. :L
Cheers for the reply
Just in case anyone else has this problem. My situation looked horrible.. but I brought a USB Jig from eBay and after months of problems. I got into recovery mode and flashed back to stock. Everything is perfect now

Though I am officially out of the Nexus S great community (mine was sold) but a great lesson I learned here is to BABY the power button...I also disabled the screen lock so I can get screen to wake with vol rocker.... take care of the power button folks on Nexus S lol

Well no lol. It started working on its own after I reflashed. It works on and off.. but I only flash roms now that have volume rocker wake and 'sleep' in the notification bar.. i.e CM based etc. Just in case the power button decides to fail completely

Stock ICS has a feature to wake the screen using the vol rocker.
And you can search the market for "Lock screen widget" to shut the screen.
In this case you minimize the need for the power button..That what I was doing..

[Q] Sleep of Death?

Hey guys!
I just returned home and my Nexus 5 wouldn't react when I pressed the power button to wake it up. I pressed it shortly, then for some 10 seconds, no reaction. I thought the battery might have died, so I plugged in the charger, no reaction. After pressing the power button for 30 seconds or something like that, the phone finally started up.
I was listening to music the whole way home, so it must have happened when I unplugged the headphones or shortly after that. Is this something similar to the Nexus 4 SoD?
The phone works now as if it never happened, the battery is half full.
Has this happend to anyone before, too?
Side note: I have my Nexus 5 unlocked and rooted. Also the latest update is installed. No custom recovery.
Used Pandora radio for 4 hours today and its been fine. What app were you using?

Google Play Music :S Needs to be said that I listened to music 90 minutes straight, which cached some amount of data.
This just happened to me. Just bought the phone, performed the update . started looking through play store to manually reinstall my apps. Got side tracked , placed the phone down, came back 10 mins later, and it was off, pressed power for about 20 secs came back on?? As normal.
I bought this phone to replace my s4.
In the 4months I had my s4, I never had 1 issue!! This is worrying me

I found this happened to most my Android device Atleast ones, including my gs4 and nexus 7 flo. Don't know the cause but it hasn't happened on my Nexus 5 yet. I'm not worried anymore though since this happened to most of my device in the past. But yeah holding the power button until it restarts is the way to go.

I never had this with my SGS3 and my HTC One. Is this software related? I would be so pissed off if we were the ones with faulty hardware...

I never had problems with my GNex, however my wife's SGS3 one day started freezing (sleep of death style) and rebooting randomly. The problem was power saving mode following one of the updates. Does N5 have something similar?

I dont know, I cant really tell since I had my device for only 3 days now. But it seemed to be random, I just pulled it out of my pocked after a days work and it wouldn't turn on
Has anyone been able to alleviate this issue? I was having it happen every other day or so with Xposed installed. I uninstalled it, and it'll still happen when listening to Google Play Music. I've got a Nexus 4, rooted, with the latest update.
i am having a similar issue, but i think it's related to the bluetooth bug in android 4.4.2, whenever i send some file to other device and don't switch off the bluetooth before the device gets locked, then it's impossible to wake up the screen unless i press the power button for 10 secs, which causes the hard reboot. I know that phone is working as pressing the power button causes a vibration indicating that power menu has popped, but screen remains blank..
any of you guys having SoD using custom kernel like franco?
For those having the SOD issue, post a logcat after it happens and maybe someone can help

started happening to me too recently
Nexus 5 stock no root, 5.0.1
Only when using popcorn time, not all the time, when it wouldnt wake up, notification led was blinking. Everytime it froze, not led was blinking.
Might sound like cache going crazy or something. Phone wasnt hot at all.
Can i get a logcat without root?
Thx!
I am running stock right now and have had this issue for the past 2 weeks or so. multiple times a day. running a logcat, it's hard because you never know when it is going to happen. intermittent problems are the worst.
Guys, any success with identifying the root cause in your case?
I have the same now on my stock marshmallow (without root)

Phone won't boot

Hey guys,
My phone shut off unexpectedly today and now won't turn back on. When I try to power it on I see the Google logo for a couple seconds and then it'll just shut off again. I tried holding the volume up/down buttons to access the bootloader, but right after I get to the screen it just restarts itself again.
Connecting to power (AC or USB) causes it to constantly reboot over and over, it just shows the Google logo for a couple seconds and then restarts again.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Provide more information for a starter - stock? unlocked bootloader? rooted? third party recovery? rom and if yes which?
If it's stock I'd RMA it.
If not what did you do immediately before the problem started?
try holding the power button for > 2 seconds which should turn it off completely, leave it on a wall charger for at least a couple of hours then turn it back on - I doubt it'll fix the problem but it's a simple thing to try...

Everything on it is stock, no ROM, not rooted. I had just taken it out of my pocket to check the time, put it back in my pocket and then felt it vibrate, took it back out to see it at the Google logo and haven't been able to get it started since. There was one or two times when it got past the Google logo and started to show the start up animation (the four colours bouncing around or whatever it is) but then it shut off again.
I tried holding the power button to completely turn it off, but plugging it into the wall charger just causes it to repeatedly attempt to boot like I mentioned earlier. I'll leave it for a while and hope for the best
Sounds like the mobo is bad. Most likely will have to rma it.

Maybe not. Sounds like a stuck power button to me.
OP does the phone just endlessly repeat this cycle? If so it's rebooting itself do to a stuck power button. One other users already reported similar issues and his power button was indeed stuck. Mash the power button hard for a minute to see if you can unstick it.

Thanks so much, really wasn't looking forward to waiting for weeks while the RMA went through. The button didn't appear to be stuck - it was still clicky - but after mashing it for a minute it started up normally and appears to be fine now.

brother the issue is gone, as mentioned "sticky power button" was causing it. read the thread before posting. btw thanks for effort anyway... haha
:laugh::silly:
Hi all. Sorry to reopen an old thread (but xda suggested I check here before making my own thread).
I think we have the exact same problem with a Nexus 5. Unfortunately, bashing the power button doesn't seem to be helping (and makes me feel slightly silly .
Anyone know how much effort it would be to take it apart to get to the part that's stuck? Any good instructions?
Thanks.
Weird, I have the same issue starting a few hours ago. I updated to the Oct 17 beta of Cataclysm then a hour later it happened. But was told it sounds like the power button issue.
Took it apart, tried to fix it. If plugged in I can get into the bootloader, but then it reboots again. I've tried tapping it on a hard surface, and it gets seems like it almost fixes it because it'll connect to my laptop but then reboots again.
Could it be the battery? It was fully charged but then died as I was deleting hundreds of photo's in Dropbox to move photo's over from my phone because it was full.
I too am running into this same issue. My screen cracked so I replaced the digitizer with some success. In the process I damaged the battery and needed to replace it. When I got the new battery and replaced it my phone is now unusable.
When unplugged: I turn on the phone and it's running the ANDROID animation then turns off.
When plugged in: I turn on the phone, the ANDROID animation runs then the phone restarts and continues the process over and over again.
I then flashed the phone with Marshmallow and the same thing happens. Except now that I flashed it I get the Android icon with the spinning gear. So; I flashed it back to 5.1.1, but the same result.
Could I have physically damaged something inside or is it a battery issue? Thanks for any insight.

[Q] nexus 5 keeps shutting down for no apparent reason

my nexus 5 d820 16 gigs would randomly shutdown for no reason, it wouldn't turn on without plugging it in. i was rooted and running cm11, then i tried carbon ROM, then c-ROM. c-ROM started to give me problems so i factory reset and switched to carbon but the problems remained. then i unrooted, thinking that root was the problem but no signs of improvement, so i re-locked the bootloader but still the problem remained. it would sometimes also shut down if i unplug it and would always forget my WiFi connection for some reason. help me please. thanks in advance.
Well sounds like a hardware problem since you already unroofed and relocked boot loader I would say call lg and get a warranty replacement

Sorry to bring this post back after a long time.
I had a similar but not exactly the same problem.
2 nights ago I left the phone on the table, and a few minutes later, when I picked it up, it was off (It had about 60% battery left when I put it down).
Then it would not wake up; I kept the power button pressed for like 20 seconds to force a shutdown, and then tried to power up with no luck, so I'm thinking I'm screwed.
I tried again and it powered up to a graphical noise screen as seen in the attached image, but then it showed the boot animation and came back to life.
This morning it shut off by itself while listening to music (Google play), but powered back on right away...
Rooted 4.4.4, stock ROM, Xposed with Greenify, Amplify and wakelock detector (all latest versions). But no changes for a couple weeks before this started happening.
No specific app running (at least in the foreground).
Any one knows where I can find any kind of log or trace about this, if any at all?
Has anyone experienced this as well?
Thanks

[Q] Nexus 5 bootlooping and won't boot into bootloader

My nexus was working fine and then i tried turning on the screen and it wouldnt turn on so i plugged it into the charger and it was coming up with the bootloader screen (google screen) and then turning off again.
I can boot to bootloader mode by holding volume down by again the phone will power off after less than a second.
My bootloader is unlocked but my phone is running stock 4.4.2 firmware off the google website (cyanogenmod had too many bugs).
Has anyone had the same issue and know of a way to resolve it?
If the phone keeps the restarting in bootloader, then it's certainly got nothing to do with CM... I guess your power button is stuck or broken.. Try pressing the power button hard and move it around a bit too see if it loosens up.
- Sent from an IceCold Hammerhead!
i know its not to do cm, i've been on stock for months now, i was saying i'm on stock so it is not firmware related.
surely the power button has nothing to do with it powering itself off?

Actually it probably does! Thought I'd jump in here - had the same problem with the device rebooting randomly or locking the screen (very rarely) - and then one day, bam, bootloop. Exact same symptoms.
It's probably a stuck power button : )
If you got your Nexus through Play (and it's within warranty), just ping them on the website, they'll RMA it and have you up and running remarkably painlessly. Not sure if it's a "known issue" yet but I'm glad to see I wasn't just crazy!
I have phoned google and they are sending me a replacement.
