I can't get you s-off but I can help you with root issues.
Do a twrp backup first especially the kernel.
Now flash my boot.img . The system write protection is off in this boot.img so root will work perfectly.
But still firewater does not work on my boot.img so no s-off.

Thanks, Now I need to do S-Off, will it (firewater etc) work if I flash any other kernel?

What do you need S-Off for? After installing the kernel you can write to /system.

I'm looking to get write protection off so this looks perfect for me! Is it limited to a specific variant of E8 though? I've got a China Unicom HTC One E8 dual sim (M8sw). You reckon the kernel will work with mine?

it seems S-off is achievable with the use of sunshine only. I did it on my M8sw to go from Chinese to Indian rom.
Sunshine costs 25US$. And license is only for one device to toggle s-off and s-on.
there is no other way to the best of my knowledge as HTC patched against firewater.

I've got TWRP and made a nandroid backup, so I should be able to get back even if I flash a incompatible boot.img right? Apologies for my paranoia. Right, going to give it a go tonight. Thanks for the file!

The kernel is compatible with mec_dwgl variant of E8.
U can check it in the fastboot mode where it shows s-off or s-on
I think China Unicom M8Sw devices are mec_dugl so may not work.
Try the ones at the end if THIS post

Did you end up getting your phone get sorted out? I had to flash busybox instead of using one of those installer apps (although Busybox on Rails was useful for checking if I had flashed an appropriate one). Only the first one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929852 worked for me though.

Thanks mate, you saved me a lot of grief from installing an incompatible one! I must be doing something wrong on my end though since flashing the boot.img from that other thread still didn't remove the write protection, but at least it did no harm at all since it was compatible as you rightly pointed out. Will keep looking.

No, you can't. It only remove system protection. Only signed firmware can flashed with S-On. Sunshine can s-off your device. But it costs 25$ or wait for signed RUU to roll out of lollipop, if you want to use Bindroided Lollipop with sense 7 Rom. If you want to use sunshine, flash the stock downgraded Rom. Sunshine can't work with custom kernel. and If you want to change directly through root explorer, I don't know what will happen. Edit it through ES File explorer mounting RW but I can't guarantee that it will work or not brick your device.
My opinion: Go through Sunshine. It will lighten your path.

How to apply OTA update on Rooted At&t One X

Hi,
I have this AT&T one x, (I m using on NON AT&T network), so cant have an ota update.
Looking at few forums, downloaded the OTA version on XDA (631 Mb)
Saw people writing, that just rename the file to update.zip and then go to recovery and choose install from internal memory.
That dint work for me.
Error: not able to mount sd mem
Then few people wrote to choose install from external mem.
That dint work either.
Error: not able to mount sd mem
Then saw few people saying that I need to root my device and unlock bootloader.
I dint that, and tried from bootlaoder to install from zip.
That also dint work.
Now saw, I few wrote that i need to be S - OFF.
Which I tried doing it, but i m not able to do s-off for myself.
Pls pls pls.... can any of you EXPERTs out here help me.
Waited like for AT&T to release the update, now when it is out, i m not able to make it through.
Your step by step instruction would be highly appreciable.
Be aware, that if you have the AT&T version, and you are rooted, then you probably have SuperCID (in fact, you must have SuperCID, unless it was already changed back). If you have SuperCID you must S-off (or return to the AT&T CID) before applying the OTA, or you will brick your phone!
I am not all that familiar with the process to install using OTA.zip (and haven't done it myself), but it was discussed in these threads:

No, that is a very small question. Or at least a very easy one to answer.
Take 5 minutes to look around before asking "big" questions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237

If you would read my first post, I have already posted that I tried doing that was not able to do.
On the third comment that we need push in , where it given an error 92 or something like that, I dint got that.
Tried many times and then it became a "big" for me.
We all are born not experts in every field.
So before comenting pls try to know what's behind it

I tried this method couple of time before : unlocking, rooting and S-off ing
In this case , do i need to relock my bootloader and stock recovery?
If yes, where can i find stock recovery, i have deleted it.
By "i deleted it" do you mean you installed a custom recovery? If so, yes you need to get stock recovery back on.
Only way I know of to reinstall stock recovery is to run the 2.20 ruu. Since you're s-off, you don't need to relock; just run it.

You probably have a custom recovery. Reboot to bootloader and select recovery and see what you get. If it's TWRP, you'll get a teamwin splash screen and then some options. Stock recovery will just show a screen with a green circle.

I have already done that.
And now in case anyone needs help, i can help those people out.
Coz the method is simple, but it is not at all explained clearly in any of the threads.
It has come in bit and pieces.
I have noticed one thing.
That after installing the update and again unlockin the bootloader and rooting, I am not able to see "TAMPERED" being written in the boatloader.
Also, now when I am rooted and also have SU permission, I m not able to switch on my WiFi tether with the files mentioned in the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677261
The "TAMPERED" flag goes away when you're s-off and flash a new hboot.
I believe wifi tether is blocked on the new AT&T base. You can flash a custom rom on the 3.17 base and it should work.

[Q] Help: stucked TAMPERED LOCKED S-ON

Hi guys, a few day ago my One SV had some problems, rebooting itself and runs very slowly; so i tryed to do something like root it, but not knowing what i'm doing 'cause i don't have much time.
Probably installing a wrong rom, now I'm stuck in the bootloader with S-ON Tampered, Locked, and Security Warning flags.
The phone stuck with htc logo, i only manage to go into bootloader, pdanet gives me sync error, twrp recovery doesn't work anymore.
Is there something I can do now?

As long as your device is Locked, you can't flash a custom recovery.
So unlock your device at htcdev.com, flash Twrp recovery and flash back a working rom.
Use a Android 4.1.2 rom, otherwise you will have problems with noisy sound.

How do you mount the sd?
At least pull it out of your device and put it into your PC and copy needed files in this way.
One thing i could not solve earlier (because of bad internet connection): did you already install the Android 4.2.2 update or what was your software running on your device before? Thats important to give you the right rom for your firmware!
I'll give you the links anyway:
4.1.2 -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2254384
4.2.2 -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512742
Rumrunner & moonshine are confirmed working for your hboot, but which you should use at least also depends on your previous software.

I installed the 4.2.2 versions, seems completed but phone remains with black screen showing only the top bar with the clock, then reboot itself; sometimes after reboot it shows the bottom clock and lock, you can also unlock it, but then it reboots;
One time it shows me the backgroud.
Maybe it's a motherboard problem, what do you think?
Thanks

I don't know the name of the tool (i'm at work), but you will find it with google search, i think.
In recovery this is not a problem, its only to check on your pc, if the downloaded file is the same as the upload.

Fastboot only. No adb involved. Did you this once or twice? Via fastboot you often have to run twice as it does not hit all the partitions in one shot.

If I can get this RUU without SuperSU that would fix all my problems, I need it without SuperSU so I can gain temp root on my phone to use firewater to gain s-off (I know that it isn't suppose to work but it does because I can do everything fine except SuperSU) and then I can install TWRP and install a permanent root. Can you give me a guide on how to remove SuperSU from the ROM's zip?
If I wanted to return my phone back to stock as possible would I flash this, then uninstall superuser then do the writesecure command to relock boot loader?

Lol, just realized you changed my quoted text. Thanks.
I've gotten to the last part where you flash the RUU file, but for some reason I'm still getting this error: cannot load 'RUU-HTC_One_M8_GPE_5.0.1-3.11.1700.5.zip'
I'm using a Mac and have made sure everything is correct up until this point, i've tried re-naming the file, making sure that it wasn't a double extension etc.. and it still doesn't seem to recognise it. Plus i'm certain that Terminal is pointing to where the file is placed (in platform-tools)
Any help greatly appreciated
Edit: solved. I had to include the entire location link for the ruu file (Users/ etc..) etc even though Terminal was already looking in platform-tools.
Your RUU rocks!
Thank you so much. Your RUU rocks!
My phone was messed up because I used the stupid LTE On/Off tool to switch between networks. It completely messed up my radio. I did not have signal anymore. I flashed other ROMs but the issue was not resolved. In trouble shooting section @digitalhigh said the some radio problems on HTC are caused by a corrupted NV partition. I followed his instruction to go back to the my base stock ROM and your RUU was a miracle. I used method 2. It worked like a charm. I then I used stock recovery to do a data/factory reset. It restored the NV partition. Now, my phone works again!
Thank you for the great job!

Let me know if you have any issues.
What firmware do we need for Viper Lolipop on vzw?

Thats what I was looking for, thank you! I am having issues but not due to you. I changed my mid and cid trying everything to convert to GPE without success so I had to modify the android-text file to have my model but still didnt seem to want to work. I just found the rom I wanted to try and used TWRP to flash to it. I got it to work.

I have a tool that we can change them straight back to those if you want. No DD/ADB commands.

That would be awesome. I'll PM you my email. Thank you!
Everything flashed OK. Phones fine except for BT cutting off every now and then. Was curious if anyone one knows why my firmware version is in red parenthesis ?
It reads:
3.28.605. (4.17.605.5)
and it's in red not green
Had a few errors while flashing. Too

How about an updated root thread for 4.4.4 (Verizon) ?

I've been through all the threads on rooting my new M8 but they're all out of date since 4.4.4 dropped. Is there any prospect we'll see an updated thread or new simple method to root?

Verizon don't allow that.
Yes please
I also would like to see a new something to help with rooting. I have been running root on my M8 for a while and went through the weaksauce method until that was no longer available them I switched to the Towelroot method and also used sunshine. Now after the update to 4.4.4 (which I knew I should not have done) I cannot use any method. I am hoping the update to Sunshine 3.0 comes soon and that fixes the problem. Also some better instructions to turn of the firmware updates and stop those dumb notifications would help a lot.

If you used sunshine you are s off. Boot into fastboot and flash a custom recovery and then flash a supersu.zip. If s off you are beyond needing exploits.
Thought after I donated for unlock and S-off with Sunshine, I tried to flash twrp recovery as usually do all my flashing through computer (adb)
well it was no possible, weird thought to gain root I just need to flash custom recovery and superuser. Nope It was my M7 At&t with 4.4.2 Sense5.5, (hboot 157000) was untill I installed and run TowelRoot (after Sunshine) it did the root. then i flashed inmediately twrp and sense6 OTApkg.
So i hope that jcase-beaups instruct to or write a guide how to root the M8 4.4.4 after Sunshine 3 be released . It will help alot of users that think Sunshine will root as well and awesome will be if they include the root exploit along with sunshine, I know some people do not want to root just unlock-s-off but without root privilege it make no sense a least for me. I will be waiting for Sunshine3 to unlock _S-off-root my new HTC m8, I took the ota knowing that Sunshine will not work for a while ( I wanted to take the M8-firmwares-4.4.4 from VZW) truested that sunshine will do after.
I did with my M7 as well took the ota and then used Sunshine a small support to those great developers that put all their work at our hands. Thank you.

I wish people would learn this and pay attention when it's said. Once unlocked, or in HTC's case, S-off there's no longer a need to you use a root exploit ever again.

That's what I though but some users run into Root annoyances included me even after flashing Recovery and Su.
and yes I used root exploit in order to root. (towelroot)
so I hoped Sunshine for 4.4.4 fix the small problem. jcase said will include su in the next version

The problem is users who are s off are trying to use hacky (towelroot etc) means of getting root back after taking an ota.
They should be using twrp or cwr flashed via flashboot. Then flash the su.zip of choosing in recovery. That's the only way you should be rooting a rom after getting s off or being s off and taking an ota.
Can't tell you how tired it gets trying to explain to an s off user who keeps trying to run an exploit to get root. First link you posted the guy used towel root after flashing twrp. Wtf. That's not how it works. That's how it breaks. /rant

I don't know if they are trying to hack ? i just point to a annoying may be a little bug with the intention to enrich info about sunshine and users
experiences. In my case I did Sunshine on the wife M7, never rooted, pure stock, she took the OTA, and I want to try Sunshine.
after s-off and unlock I couldnt flash recovery and Su have no binaries , use to flash from recovery su.zip to correct this problem but this time
with out custom recovery you cant. I was s-off unlocked. then I recall towelroot, run it grant me root inmediately, flash recovery and Su binaris updated immediately.

What prevented you from flashing a custom recovery?
An unlocked s off phone will flash recoveries and firmware for that matter all day long without a complaint.
And by hacky I mean a hacky method to root. It's not clean.

You would be using fastboot to flash. If you want I can help you get a working fastboot/adb setup via team viewer at some point it works for both of us.

finanandroid, I received an error using fastboot when flashing a recovery. Turns out I was using a fastboot.exe from 2011. Once I found a newer fastboot dated 1/17/2014 the error went away. Might want to check that. dottat knows what he is talking about. There is no need to use towel root to gain root access on an S-Off Unlocked M8.
- Just flash twrp (http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/164)
- Boot into recovery
- Hit the reboot button
- Hit the system button
- twrp will prompt you to install SuperSU. Allow twrp to install SuperSU
- Once finished boot into your phone and open SuperSU to complete setup.

Thanks for your input, I don't doubt that Dottat is right about it, I didn't post a problem to seek a fix I fixed it since I posted, Just wanted to share sunshine user experience. however the problem wasn't fastboot adb.
the problem was with the HTC M7. state it in my first post.
So I have sun shine on my m8 and its rooted and working great. Verizon keeps trying to push the 4.4.4 ota update on me.. Is there an update i should grab or let it install since I have sunshine..
Thanks Kyle
Greetings,
Thread cleaned.
Not everyone in these threads are at the same level...if you can be helpful then please do so if not move along.
After all we were all noobs at one point.

i think this is the information i was looking for also.
is the problem only that sunshine wont unlock a 4.4.4 device?
but if, like me, you are s-off and unlocked already you can update by any method without worry and still be unlocked and s-off.
if you then re-lock your device (for whatever reason) after updating to 4.4.4, then you cannot re-use sunshine (until sunshine is updated)
please correct if i am wrong.
i am waiting to update to 4.4.4.

System won't mount in twrp, trying to flash rom

Trying to keep this short but i seem to have messed up. I was trying to get back to stock with this phone so i've been trying to use the RUU to flash back to stock. I keep getting the 22 RU_HEADER_ERROR when i try the RUU sd card method but i read on here that you may need S off to make it work. I was in the process of flashing a custom rom (Bad Boyz rom) just so i can be rooted so that sunshine would work but system won't mount. Looking for options before i mess more stuff up

If you flash a RUU that matches your cid/mid you don't need s-off. At least when you upgrade your OS Version and not downgrade.
A "fastboot getvar all" will help us to provide you a correct RUU version, if there is one.
About the system not mouning:
you most likely checked in twrp to mount system as readonly.
TWRP-MOUNT: Uncheck "Mount system read only"
I have the correct version but i keep getting the above error.
Also i did uncheck read only for mount system. I think i may have messed up something when i relocked the bootloader with custom rom and recovery then unlocked it again. I must have messed up something then. The ruu seems the only option. I'm trying to flash the same one i have installed which is the 1.28.617.6 on the spread sheet for the us phone but keep getting the error. You said i need s off to downgrade but not to upgrade. So do i have to wait for newer software?
Seems more like it you have a bad download. Did you check the md5 of your download?
Yep, bad download.
Also, why do people re-lock the bootloader? I don't see any gain from doing this.

agree, unlocked bootloader breaks safety net. So if you decide to return back to stock/non rooted you would need to relock to be able to pass Safety Net again.
That would be the only reason for me.

Sorry been away. Yes i checked it, downloaded it more than once to be sure and checked it in cmd. Now to be sure on the HTC U11 google doc spreedsheet, the RUU (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...EYtQ_tRcOSJ0vWcvk8a7TK8Hk/edit#gid=2137120377) is the recovery option at the bottom right? Thats what i been downloading, at this point i could be messing something up
