Hi guys. I have my Shield Tablet connected to my PC via the USB cable. I have it set as "Media Device". My PC sees the device and allows me access to both the internal storage card and the external SD card.
However, I would like to know how do I set up the Shield Tablet so that I can download Youtube vids and other things off the web directly to the SD card? I'm using FireFox as my browser and for some reason, apps like Flashgot or other youtube downloaders are not seeing the shield at all, even though I have it set as a "Media Device" in the Android settings.

Not sure anybody here can help you with that, as that's a potentially illegal issue on copyright grounds. Otherwise, don't know. You'd probably have to save to hard drive and copy over.

Yeah, I've been saving directly to my PC drive then copying it over. But that's kind of a pain the ass y'know? I have an HTC EVO 3D phone when plugged into my PC via USB, the PC sees it as a pure SD flash card and lets me write directly to it. In fact, for some reason on the earlier version Android Jellybean(4.2) which my HTC is running, Android has a specific option to allow the phone to see it as a "hard disk", but on Kit Kat, there is no such option(at least not on the Shield). Only options are "Connect as Media Device(MTP)" or "Connect as Camera(PTP)", none of which are the same as "Hard Disk".
Can anyone explain why Android removed the Hard Disk option going from Jellybean to KitKat, or if there's a way to connect as a "Hard Disk" on KitKat that I'm unaware of?

I believe that was removed in 4.3 for unknown reasons and is the source of anguish for many.

Good, you have to forgive my ignorance but is that after several minutes did not find what I'm going to ask:
Windowsph7 exists in a file browser to enter the memory card?
As I can copy music files to your ?
The USB connection allows me to connect to your board and explore ?
All this I ask because when I connect the phone to the pc does not show anything like the memory card.
Thanks

WP7 isn't meant to be able to use the memory card as an external drive. It is solely used for the system. Think of the card as WP7's internal memory where the OS is stored. That's a bit simplistic, but you'll get the picture. The memory card isn't meant to be removed either. If you remove it, you will screw up the system. In simple words, WP7 doesn't have expandable memory. Forget the card. Forget all about it. You can't use it like a device that has a card slot for removing and so forth.
The question was not exactly that, it must be my English is very bad I want to copy some songs I have on my harddrive, you can not copy directly from the cable "?
No yu have to connect and sync through Zune, works well that way.

No, like the iPhone and iTunes software/hardware management, WP7 uses Zune to copy anything compatible to the device. And you can't select where on the device to copy it to. Meaning, you can't choose to copy anything to the card.
Perfect I've installed, all very well, now the problem is that I said that no device is connected, tells me to restart the device I have connected and reconnected, I've done it several times but still not working. Has this happened to someone "?
Thank you very much, you are a expert, I used my Windows Mobile 6.5
when you connect your phone via cable to the pc does it make that sound to show that a device has been connected?
if not, try other usb ports. it should come up in the notification area (aka system tray) that a device can be unplugged.
No, I have this problem ...

But this does not resolve what you put in the Microsoft article, I tried it on two PCs but does not work, can not connect. Someone has solved another way "?
I did a search, and I couldn't find anything on it.
But I wanted to use my G2x as a memory device for the xbox 360 (to move game saves and such). But when I plug in the phone and enable usb mode, it doesn't show up under "storage devices", where it should be if the xbox recognized it.
I already tried formatting the drive to fat32, and still no luck... Any help?
you need to install drivers to mount storage on a pc, so I'm guessing it won't work on a 360 for that reason
Try "mass storage only mode" under SD Card and Phone storage in settings!

Ah. That does make sense. :/
I did try the solution that the poster above mentioned, but it still didn't work. Looks like I'm off to walmart to go buy myself a sandisk usb.
If anyone else has a solution or any ideas, it's never too late to post them. Maybe someone else will try in the future.
Ah darn, I had heard that would mount the external SD card on a PC without any drivers, but haven't tried it myself yet. You are using an external SD card?
Its not just the drivers. I know for a fact My 360 would read my stock G1 and with the earliest cyanogen roms, posibly as well with my N1.
once the rumors started about the "zune phone" which became the windows 7 phone media sync broke and xbox wouldnt see any of the phones. long story short M$ blocked you so W7 phones have an advantage

My car has a USB port and I can plugin to it USB thumb drives and I could also plugin my old MyTouch 3G to it and I could play music off of them.
I cannot play music on my phone through the USB port. I assumed it was because of the drivers issue, which is REALLY unfortunate because that was great functionality...
Anyone know if these issues persist after rooting and loading a Cyanogen rom?

That isnt what this thread is about. this is about the ability for xbox to read android phones. it used to, but now it does not.
your issue could be one of a few things. anything from your specific rom to making sure mass storage mode is checked or mounting the USB when prompted. Im not sure how yours works as I prefer the AUX on my head unit
Apologies, I searched the forums and stumbled onto this, as I read through i thought it could be related and put in a reply.
I never get the prompt on my phone to mount it...which is what prompted me to search the forums. I'll keep looking
Hi, whenever I connect my android phone to pc it shows the data at the pc without asking any password or something. I have enabled lock on my phone but all the data at my phone are accessible whenever i use usb to pc connection.
Is there any way to enable this?
At all usb ports its so?
Yeap. At any usb at any pc/laptop I have tried. Specifically I tried 2 pcs and 2 laptops. At all 4 I can access my phone's sd card like a removable disk without any problem or password needed.
You'd probably have to encrypt your sd card. Try ICS perhaps?

what does ICS stants for? Ice Cream Sandwich? If so,that's what i am running!
Let me ask you please.
When you connect your android phone to pc, what happens?Does it ask you for password?Does it ask you to unlock phone first?
Also, when you remove the sd card and use the card reader, are the files encrypted?
Thanks
Yeah, I want to know this too.
Recently, I had to charge my android at a collegue's pc, and only later it occured to me that he could easily look what's in, just because every time my s-phone is connected to a pc, a dialog pops up, prompting unpassworded access to the files. As a partial solution, I just checked the box "Usb debugging mode". It won't stop the thief, but I hope will prevent excess curiosity, as it suggests fixing a "new connection" to a pc, which takes a bit of time.
Hi. I've searched but found no answer so here is my thread . So I am somewhat unhappy with how my Verizon GSIII is behaving. Since day 2 I learned I cannot connect this phone as a disc drive on WIndows or Linux. The only options I get when connected via USB to a computer are Media device (MTP) and Camera (PTP). My friend show me his ATT GSII last night. It connects as a disc drive (regular flash drive behavior).
When connecting an external HDD via USB Android should recognize that drive as a mass storage device. His ATT SIII did this, my Verizon SIII did not. I got the message in the notification area "USB Connect" followed by "USB Disconnected." Thankfully, I have no files I want to transfer onto my device as I'm coming from an HTC Incredible, but in the future I will want to browse my file system on my laptop.
Am I the only one here with these issues? I am not rooted.

Edit: I found an article which looks like I can browse the external SD Card but not hte internal memory. This is only for root users however. Enable USB Mass Storage for root.
If your Galaxy S3 connects as mass storage, post the carrier.
My S3 shows up as separate internal and external devices when I plug it into my USB port and is listed as SCH-I535 when ejecting. However my Nexus show up as an MTP device when ejecting. Both devices are rooted.
So there may be hope. I'm going to root today, well try to. Can you link me to the ROM you flashed so I have a higher possibility of achieving what I want?
Will every build ROM found in the developer section here get rid of the OEM functionality?
I have the same 2 options as you when connecting to a PC, but, when connected windows will pop the "browse for files" instantly and the 2 drives will be displayed under Computer, one for the internal SD and for the external.
This was like this from the first time i plugged the phone in, before root, same after.
It actually seems like we get to skip the step of "Enable USB sharing" which I find great, plug in and the drives pop.

I used root66 to do mine.
However I had access to both drives prior to doing the root update.
Both of you seem to have more luck than I'm having. When I plug it into Windows I had no way of browsing files. In (K)ubuntu when I plug it in a popup has an option to browse which takes me to 1 folder names 'USB PTP Class Camera' which I can get to the internal storage, but not the SD Card. I'll be making a trip to Verizon today for sure. It makes me wonder if a rooted stock image from Samsung would fix the issue.
Quick question.
Which drivers did you install?
Why do I need drivers, I'm not doing anything but reading the flash memory? It should just work in both Linux and Windows.
Note that the guide to enable UMS on the S3 is for the International version, not the US version. The US version doesn't yet have a UMS option.
You shouldn't (and don't) need drivers for the SD storage to show up on your computer.
Just to test it I connected my S3 to my gf's laptop running W7, both drives popped right away there too.
I just want to make a note: Can't remember exactly what I did but after a few drivers on my AT&T SGS III I am able to just plug into my computer and move files around.
Can anyone helo me transfer video files...pic files i can transfer but all the video files wint...i get an error message on the computer ( pc ) and my s3 says syncing and does nothing. Its a verizon gs3.
skillzo1: How are you trying to transfer these video files?

Sure do.
ICS devices use MTP to transfer files, not UMS. I have a verizon S3 and the drives appear when I plug it in. I had USB debug mode enabled and when I plugged it in it automatically downloaded and installed drivers and worked after that. You shouldn't need root to do all of this.
kthung, thanks for that tid-bit of information. Now how do I do this in Linux? I can browse internal memory, but not my micro SD card via USB.

Hi,
Wondering if anyone has problems connecting a smartphone ? When trying to connect to the usb port of the dock on TF700T my Sony Xperia S is not recognized, no message appears that "mass storage device" or "usb device is being prepared".
kind regards,
What Android version is your phone running?
Once my phone was in USB connect mode, I had to go to the transformer settings > storage and then scroll down to the bottom and select the option to mount the mass storage device.

I never saw any pop-ups or notifications in the status bar either. My first thought was that the device didn't know my phone was attached. I had to do some google-fu before I found the suggestion that, even though you don't see any notifications, to look at the storage settings anyway. Very strange that nothing is showing up for you. This might seem odd, but would you happen to have a USB hub you could run through? Try connecting the phone to the hub in storage mode, then connecting the hub to the transformer.
I can confirm that I did not have any notification either. My phone however detect the USB plug and I could activate USB mass storage on its side.
Then i needed to manually mount the external storage in settings. This done, I have access to the external SD card of the phone but not to the internal one.

Besides the fact i can't seem to connect it, that would be a problem also, because with the Sony Xperia S there is no SD card slot available for external memory, only 32GB of internal memory.
kind regards,
Not quite satisfied by my first test, I have made it again. With the two cards in the phone I can only access the external one. So I retreave the external card out of the phone and renew the test. this time, I can access the internal card.
So it seems that i can only see one card at a time, even if I need to mount it manually.
In any case if you have only one card, you should be able to access it.
