SNES Side load Demo - Nexus Player General

Just got my nexus player today. I gave a snes emulator a try and it worked pretty well. I have the controller and did button mappings within the app. It was clunky, though this shows at least what is to come for the nexus player. Sorry for the shotty video.

Stuff I used to get it all setup, basic stuff, but I'll provide these links for those that need them:
USB Driver support:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/general/usb-driver-nexus-player-t2935873
Enable Developer mode:
Goto About, then click on the build number a bunch of times.
Then go back and you will have a developer options icon.
Click that and enable debug and allow unknown apps.
Once you have ADB working, this is the command to side load.
adb install filename.apk
You will also want to push a SNES rom over to the nexus player. Use this command:
adb push c:\path to snes rom\ /sdcard/Download/
To launch the app since it doesn't show up in the normal app list.
Side Load Launcher from Play Store or side load the APK:

Nice... But I think the easier way would be to download the the Snes9x EX+ Emulator from the Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.explusalpha.Snes9xPlus
And use Chainfire's Sideload Launcher to launch https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.tv.sideloadlauncher
Then put some Roms on and USB card (using a OTG Cable) or just downoad ES File Explorer File Manager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop
And browse for the Roms from your network drive...

Terminal

Is there a terminal app that works on the nexus? Terminal Emulator force closes when i try and open it and Su File Manager and Terminal Emulator doesnt have an on screen keyboard
SUFBS
if you are willing to purchase the rooted file browser, SUFBS, it has a built in terminal (with other goodies) that allows you to use the virtual keyboard. works pretty well too.
other than that, ADB I guess would be some sort of alternative.

I use better terminal emulator. Works fine.

What's the best screen capture tool for Android?

I've tried dropcap2 and ShootMe. I prefer ShootMe because it takes less steps to take a screenshot.
Can you recommend a better tool? iPhone's method is way better.
What do you mean you don't enjoy the process to install the Java and the Android SDKs, enable USB debugging, install drivers, then navigate to the SDK folder in command prompt/terminal and run a .bat?
Shame on you, sir.
lol @ grainysand
I use PicMe just start the app and connect to the address shown and snap away (works best over wifi)

Removing Bloat

I posted something similar in the GPS thread for the Galaxy S 4G. I used the One Click Root method and Root Explorer to go in and delete a bunch of bloat from my /system/app and /data/app folders. I pulled out Telenav.apk, DoubleTwist.apk, Layar.apk, VisualVoicemail.apk (replaced with the older, mostly black version that isn't hideous), and Slacker.apk as well as the various .odex files where appropriate.
However, since then I've seen two problems: News and Weather doesn't want to find my location via GPS anymore, and I have to be on Wifi for it to find me. A small annoyance and makes me wonder if the new ROM references Telenav for some location data (which is a good theory following problem two).
The second, more concerning problem, is I'm seeing what I can only call "phantom force closes". It happens after rebooting, randomly when enabling Bluetooth or wifi, and in the stock browser on random websites, the phone vibrates several times indicating errors, will crash out the application (and one time the phone itself), but does not give me the force close error message telling me what app or why. It's definitely looking for either doubletwist or telenav but I can't figure out why it would need to do that as they are 3rd party apps. I've removed these apps before on the Vibrant 2.1 and 2.2 roms without any real problems.
If anyone can provide some helpful information it would be much appreciated. The phone has been more stable the last few hours since several reboots but will likely start acting up again later.
Any thoughts?
I removed all those apps and more without getting a problem on my phone. But I left telenav cause its free and its not beta. I also used terminal emulater and systemapp remover to remove them. Then I used root explorer to delete the odex files of the apps I removed. Maybe the way your removed them was bad.
How do you remove the odex files? Where are they located?
Remove Stock Files / Apps
Here is a quick way to remove the apps that come preinstalled on the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G. (you could also follow this for the ones that have .odex files as well. See ls command at the end).
I pieced this together from several forums. Hopefully it will save someone the trouble of doing this themselves (or serve as a refresher like it did for me).
Sorry I couldn't post formal links to the source files (forumn rules), apparently I don't contribute enough . Just put the server names in internet explorer and it should get you there.
1.) Download the Samsung Galaxy S 4G Root app. from mediafire.com/?096oxx07q6d88b3
2.) Download the Samsung USB Device Drivers from here:
-Windows 32 Bit drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml
-Windows 64 Bit drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml
3.) Install the drivers.
4.) Extract (unzip) the root app to a familiar folder.
5.) Enable USB debugging on your phone: Settings -> Development -> USB Debugging
6.) Plug your phone into your computer (wait till the drivers install)
7.) Open the Root app and click Shell Root
8.) Open a command shell (Start -> Run -> cmd)
9.) Type each line, pressing enter after each line:
cd <replace this text and these brackets with the folder location of the root app>
adb shell
cd /system/app
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblk3 /system
10.) Next type the following two commands (replace the <...> with your app name, press enter after each line) for each app you wish to remove
chmod 777 <insert your ap name here.apk>
rm <insert your ap name here.apk>
Here is a list of the one's I removed. You can get a list of others by typing the two letters "ls" without quotes into the shell and press enter:
Note: Do not type in the app names in front of the file names, they are just there to let you know what you are deleting.
Kindle App - Kindle-OEM-1.1.1.90750089-20100927.apk
Facebook App - FBAndroid-1.4.1.apk - Facebook App
T-Mobile TV - com.mobitv.client.tmobiletvhd.apk
Doubetwist - doubleTwist.apk
Amazon MP3 - AmazonMp3.apk
Layar - Layar-samsung.apk
Slacker Radio - slackerradio.apk
More Double Twist - doubleTwistPro.apk
Gogo Link (It's expired anyway) - GoGo.apk
Media Hub - MediaHub.apk
Telenav - TN6.2-6201036.apk
Inception Link - MovieShortcut.apk
11.) Restart your phone.
I don't recommend uninstalling bloat via root explorer. The safest way to remove the bloatware is to uninstall it via Titanium backup. Otherwise you might delete a bunch of stuff you really didn't mean to.
Yeah I used TB to remove the stuff.
EDIT: I just did a "Clean up the Dalvik cache" on TB and it removed 26MB of unwanted stuff! Total free 166MB.

So you don't report any weirdness or phantom force closes? The last few days since I made the post the phone has been almost entirely stable. GPS is still a little touchy but no more errors or lock-ups.
Also, on a side- note: am I the only person on XDA that doesn't remove Amazon MP3? I actually use it pretty frequently. That is, until I see how good Google Music is going to be (if it's actually a music purchasing service).

I haven't had any GPS issues. Additionally I use the ADB way to remove apps because I'm develop apps and like the shell best.
Rooted mine yesterday...used TB to get rid of all that bs...bye bye evo!

removing touchwiz
has anyone tried removing TouchWiz?
I removed touchwiz and use the gingerbread launcher. No problems
I recently found myself having those problems too. I assumed it was because of setcpu. I delete my appz with uninstaller for root....I don't know if that was any good. However, I was hoping that I would be able to start from scratch with everything but I don't know how I can start from scratch. I am completely new to this, so alot of the terminology and thing of that nature are Vulcan to me. So if someone can help me, that, finally, would be great.
Feel Your Pain, Deleted "My Account 1.0" and now hurting
I was trying to get rid of "My Account", AKA T-Mobile My Acount, to keep it from constantantly running in the background, but actually deleted "My Account 1.0" with Titanium Pro... I tried to freeze it but it kept appearing in my task list, so I deleted it.
Soon as I did, I got a buzz... buzz buzz buzz... the buzzes of death... I now get force closes when ending a phone call, when trying to read SMS, and when trying to view my call log.
This is killing me, and I have no idea how to fix it...
Any experts out there, please help!

I rooted my Samsung Vibrant 4G and used Titanium Backup to delete allot of the same T-Mobile BS bloatware that you did. Had that same "phantom force closes" that you described. Mid phone call today the phone vibrated a few times and force close phone application and hung up on my call. Has this problem remained stabilized for you?

How do I uninstall the software using Titanium? I tried following the instructions via another thread but I only got so far. I was told to click Problems - get busybox - and then long press the apps I want to remove and force delete. However, I am able to get as far as downloading busybox. After that, are my apps supposed to show within the program Titanium or am I supposed to go to the applications itself or what? Im stuck from there....can you help????

Run a game on Android Emu..

Hi,
Right so I've recently baught "gangstar Rio" from gameloft, brilliant game etc but one problem.. Its SOOO LAGGY. Like sometimes I'll be running along or driving and it will send me WAYYYYYY off course, or precede to turn way after I've needed to thus making the game almost impossible.
I run my Xperia Play (r800i) at "On-Demand" and at 1.9GHz Maximum which could EASILY cope with this game but its as-if the touch-screen and the buttons dont like each other and from time to time ill get a "Application has crashed" force close message.
Now I'm taking my phone and my laptop with me on deployment to A'ghan; what I want to know is is there anyway to set my backed-up ROM from my phone as the rom on the android emulator so that I can get it and other xperia play optimised games to play smoothly (I also have the sixaxis mod) and use either a wired usb controller on my laptop or set so that my emulator allows me to set which keys are the controller of the xperia play?
You would somehow need to get your hands on a recovery app apk like CMW or xRecovery, then install the recovery apk on your emulator, then flash your backed up rom on your emulator with recovery.
This is just a theory. With a little luck and patience I think it's possible.
A way to install apk on emulator is through URLs. If you have access though FTP to some site, you upload to a directory the open that URL inside the emulator's browser. APK will prompt to install. Just remember allowing unkown sources from applications menu.

Google daydream home on htc bolt [root\twrp\sd card required]

The following guide should allow you to run Google Daydream (including the Google Daydream Home Screen) and any Daydream Compatible apps on your HTC Bolt. But of course I can't be held liable for any problems, damage, issues that following this guide may cause you.
- Prerequisites-
* A rooted HTC Bolt with TWRP Recovery installed and an SD card. (I am also s-off, but I don’t know if that helped me achieve this or not...I'm also running Bad Boyz Rom but doubt that changed anything either)
You will need Google Daydream, Google VR Services, and Daydream Keyboard installed beforehand. (even though they won’t be able to work properly yet)
You will also need the app “Root Power Explorer” and “QuickEdit” which are both free from the Play Store.
* You will also need second device running Android that has a gyroscope and Bluetooth capabilities that will be used as your controller. (I used an old Galaxy S4, I will refer to this as the “Controller Device”)
*You’ll likely want a VR viewer of some sort too…but I suppose that’s not really required…
-Guide-
1. Now that you have all of the apps installed the first thing you’ll want to do is open “Root Power Explorer" and navigate to:
/system/etc/permissions/handheld_core_hardware.xml
Now copy the handheld_core_hardware.xml file to your SD card and rename it handheld_core_hardware_original.xml (We do this because in the next step QuickEdit can’t save the file in the root directory even with RW enabled)
2. Open “QuickEdit” and navigate to the SD card and open handheld_core_hardware_original.xml
3. Under “Permissions” will be a list of items… add the following two lines to the bottom of that list:
<feature name="android.software.vr.mode" />
<feature name="android.hardware.vr.high_performance" />
Now save it as handheld_core_hardware.xml to the SD Card. (be sure to keep the original just in case things don't work and you need to use ADB to fix things)
4. Go back into “Root Power Explorer” and navigate to:
/system/etc/permissions/handheld_core_hardware.xml
and delete that file.
5. Now navigate to the SD Card and copy the file you saved at the end of step 3 to:
/system/etc/permissions/
6. Now this step is important. The file you just moved doesn’t have permissions (I think). (If you skip this step your phone will still boot up after a restart but your launcher will promptly close when you launch it.)
Reboot your phone to TWRP Recovery and click “Mount” and check the box next to “System”.
Now go back to the TWRP main menu and go to Advanced and then File Manager.
Navigate to /system/etc/permissions/handheld_core_hardware.xml
Click “chmod 755”and swipe the slider. Now click reboot system.
Now your launcher might close once (mine did) but after that everything should be running normal.
7. Open up Google Daydream and go to settings and tap the*build version 7 times to show the*developer options.
8. Open developer options and check the box “Skip VR Entry Screens”
9. Now you need to set up your “Controller Device” .
This device will need Google’s Daydream Controller Emulator installed on it.
Use the following guide (includes a download of the APK download and how to set it up). https://developers.google.com/vr/daydream/controller-emulator
10. Once your controller emulator is set up on the “Controller Device” and is Bluetooth paired to your Bolt and selected in Google Daydream’s Developer Options” you should be good to go!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Let me know in the comments if you try this! I'd love to know that my first guide I've ever done actually helped someone!
Also I could definitely use a few like on my account!
Looks interesting...I admit, I know nothing about daydream, guess I need to do some research...
I got it running works pretty good other than the phone getting hot and the controller going in and out. Also if you click the VR button in the daydream app it always force closes, however if you just open the app in daydream library and all your installed VR apps work just fine. I guess you could probably open them independently too just the way I was doing it. Good work around till we get official support, now I'm not as jealous of my brother's pixel.
