Signal drops when data is enabled - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In my Nexus 5 whenever I enable data signal drops time to time.I changed the sim card too but it didnt solve it either.Looks like it happens only in 3g network because I didnt notice it in 4G LTE.
No matter which ROM i have in my phone, this happened in KitKat (full stock), PA, Lollipop (full stock).
I put my sim into a Galaxy S3 and it worked fine. So I think this is a issue in my phone, not on the sim.
Anybody else having this issue?
Any solutions?

It finds the best network. If you enable it for voice only, I would imagine it would only look for best voice connection which could be 2G, but then when you enable data - it needs 3g. Just making a guess here

Thanks for the idea. I changed the settings to 3G in Preferred network type and looks like it has solved the problem! No signal drops for few minutes. Will test more and report back!

Possible fix to data connection issues

As with many skyrocket users, there seems to be trouble connecting to the AT&T data network for an extended time. the 4g icon indicates its connected but won't send or receive data unless packet data is disconnected and re enabled. After some hours of research and calls to customer service, I've found what could be a potential fix.
By dialing the ussd code ( *#*#4636#*#*) a menu comes up and gives you the options of
phone information
battery information
Usage statistics
And wifi information.
Under the phone information menu, an option for data network preferences appears at the bottom of the screen. By changing third setting, the connection issues should be solved...
however...
I can't seem to get any of the selections to stay. meaning, are I select my preference and exit, when I return to the screen its at its original setting. I believe it may change and stay if I rout which I haven't due to my phone being an AT&T company phone so if any rooted skyrockets would like to volunteer and test out my theory, we would all be greatly appreciated.

You are basically disabling the LTE radio (network) but it is temporary (for testing purposes). I think using a non-LTE APN will do the same thing and you can change it back when you are ready. Someone that knows more can correct me if I am wrong.
I used that method originally however I ran into the same issues. I was using the CINGULAR.WAP apn.
If anyone knows of another apn that I can test I would appreciate it

OK so this is what worked for me
For apn name i put AT&T and for apn type I put just : Phone and left everything else blank and even input the mms setting found online for at&t and that's got me hspa data so far

yes you have to add the other APNs for this to work. If you only have the PTA APN, it will only lock onto LTE if in a LTE area.
Now if you are rooted and running a ROM where you can change the network within the normal options area, you have to set the APN first then change to H+. It may fail the first time but try it again and eventually it will downshift to H+.

will this method still connect to lte? Not that it matters to me since I don't live in an lte zone but just out of curiosity

I kept trying my method and it worked. So far no disconnect or data stall outs to report reaching day 3 now

i m have unlocked skyrocket, currently in india using a 3g/4g sim card. i went through the *#*#INFO#*#* menu and selected "WCDMA Preferred" then i turned radio OFF and ON back again. since then it is set to "WCDMA Preferred" only and i m unable to change it.. Is it because i have only 3g available in india..?? also will I be able to change to "GSM/WCDMA/LTE AUTO" when i come back to United States???
AT&T Samsung Galaxy SII SGT-I727 data issues fixed ...
I broke my old HTC Inspire. I purchased a Samsung Galaxy SII SGH-I727 off of the eBay as a replacement.
When I moved the SIM card over everything was fine, except I had no data, even though I have a valid data plan. I still had wireless at home, but my data plan did not work when out on the street.
I called AT&T, told them the issue, and that I suspected that it had something to do with "LTE". They made some internal changes, which sounded like they activated LTE service for me. Data plan now working perfectly.

Verizon force 4G LTE?

Back on my Thunderbolt I was able to force LTE only, which comes in handy while I'm at work and don't need to worry about voice calls and want a fast data connection. In my office the 4G reception is just weak enough to push me onto 3G, but the weak 4G connection is still much faster than the strong 3G connection.
Google only turned up the *#*#4636#*#* / Phone Info app method, which works fine for disabling LTE but not forcing it. I can select 'LTE only' with this method, but the selection doesn't stick and immediately reverts to 'CDMA/LTE/EVDO' if I press back or restart or turn off and on the radio.
Can someone please detail a way to force a 4G LTE connection or shed some light on why the method I've tried may be failing?

I believe if you download the app called phone info from the market it has an option for lte only...not 100% sure but worth a shot

Using the phone info app is the same as *#*#4636#*#*, which, as detailed in op, doesn't work.

Ok and like I stated I wasn't sure if it would work and I do know it had the option...sorry for wasting your time by trying to lend a hand

No need to be defensive, thanks anyway.
:Bump:
I would also like to know if there's a way to force LTE.
or even a way to force 3g/4g only, no 1x. 1x totally kills my battery whenever my phone gets a bad enough connection, I'd rather just turn off mobile network than have 1x, but would be way easier if this was done automatically for me

Cannot toggle to 2g

I've tried several roms including cm 9, cm10, slim bean and paranoid android and none of them will allow me to toggle down to 2g. I keep 2g on while at work because h or h+ is not strong enough to make or receive calls. I cant even use *#*#4636#*#* to switch to GSM only. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Even a RAT unlocked radio didn't work for me. I think you need to unlock the phone as well, or at least that's what I've read in other threads about this topic.
I have the same issue here. Your phone doesnt just default to edge when you make a call? Mine switches seamlessly between the two without dropping calls

On my phone it's marked as 3G. However having an Edge toggle can help. I remember at one of my old jobs I had to stream audio through my phone and when it used 3G it would often have connection problems because of our location. However when I forced my phone to edge (this was on my Nexus One) the connection was SOLID; never a break in the audio.
A lot of the time signal inside is to low to even call out on h or h+ ( my phone rarely drops down to 3g at work) and it drops the call immediately, before even ringing. Maybe the skyrocket handles calling out differently, I've only ever used HTC devices. I did flash a rat unlocked radio last night and it seems to make signal a lot stronger so I'll play around with that today.

[Q] Any way to get WCDMA/LTE only mode?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode on the Nexus 5?
I basically want to stop the phone dropping to 2G. Recently LTE has been made available here and before that I used "WCDMA only" and it worked fine but that is no longer a viable option since I want to use LTE.
Thanks in advance
Can't you just switch off 2g dialing 3646?

I do, but I can use 3G to do this. I mean I don't want it to drop to EDGE.
The reason is, in Ireland the network provider Three does not have a 2G network and roams to Vodafone when it 3G isn't available. It then will not automatically change back to 3G. You need to manually select the Three network again.
you have no option then. you have either lte only, which gets you data and no phone calls, or you have lte/gsm. on gsm/lte, itll switch to whatever is your best signal.
Wouldn't it be easier to choose the operator manually?

That's what I thought. I was just hoping there was some custom software of some sort that would solve my problem.

It still jumps to vodafone when there is poor signal, even when manually selected. If there was a way of forcing it to stay with one operator or disable roaming completely, then that would do but there doesn't seem to be an option.

Are you sure there's no "national roaming" setting?. I really thought there was.

Not on the Nexus 5, as far as I'm aware. I think it just disables data anyway. I need to be able to disable roaming completely or restrict to WCDMA and LTE.

When looking in SlimKat (admittedly not stock), it is @fergietime suggests, national data roaming and would still allow the phone to roam to another operator when there was no signal on the existing operator - just with no data. However, I am not seeing a problem with that. It only roams nationally when there is 0 signal for voice on your operator?

Yes, but it happens me quite often due to certain places that I pass through. My operator does not have a 2G network at all so roams once it drops below 3G. The main problem is, I need to manually search for networks and select my network to get it back to 3G/4G. It's a network issue that Three Ireland refuse to acknowledge. It has been happening for 4 years at least. I am just looking for a workaround.

I see.
I am also on Three (UK though) so also have no 2G coverage. and yes, when it fails over to 2G (Orange in UK) it is a pain to get it back.

It's a very frustrating issue. It actually NEVER jumps back to Three and it changes to Vodafone nearly every time I go inside a Tesco or somewhere like that. I then have to search and wait for it to find networks so I can select Three. The only time it seems to work correctly is when using a device bought from Three or a Three rom, which obviously for the Nexus 5 doesn't exist. And even then people complain about it so it's a bit hit and miss.
Does anyone know if it is possible to add a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode into a rom?

T-Mobile connectivity

How in the heck can I get this phone to connect to LTE and stay connected? Sometimes it will connect then when I make a call it won't reconnect no matter what I try. They have sent me two different phones. Same problem. I have changed the Sim card also. Is there an app that will help that won't run the battery down real fast? They say the tower is fine but I think it isn't. When I do connect I get 20 down 9 up or so. Thanks to anyone who may help. And yes I've googled it. Lol

it could just be your local area. im in nyc, and on tmo, and am on lte 100% of the time. when you make phonecalls, it will switch from lte to 3G/H, as its supposed to, because the lte doesnt support voice. and while theres data flowing over your network, it wont switch back to lte until the data stops flowing. and no, no app will help you.
Are you using a custom ROM? If so check your APN sometimes it'll default to metro PCs LTE

during calls, it'll drop off LTE and go to 3G
after the call, it should go back to LTE (if your signal has no problems) ...
not sure if you are complaining about the no-LTE-reconnect-after-call problem or no-LTE-during-call problem

I'm speaking that when I'm in a LTE area that my phone won't connect at all. It will sometimes if I pull the Sim card and reinsert it. But tmobiles engineers say the tower is operating properly. Between myself and my son we have had 4 nexus 5's. Whenever I'm by the other tower in town with LTE phone works great. fallback to hspa and then reconnecting to lte works flawless when connected to the other tower. But they say there is no tower issue and sent me another phone.
