Hello everyone,
After trying to S-OFF my Desire S for over TWO WHOLE DAYS now, I finally have enough and I hope someone can help me, please
I have a branded phone (T-Mobile, Germany) with following stats:
Bootloader information:
*** UNLOCKED ***
SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0002
RADIO-3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC-boot
Aug 22 2011, 15:22:13
Software information:
Android Version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense version: 3.0
Software number: 2.10.111.8
The first thing I did was to unlock the bootloader using the official tool by htc (just to find out afterwards that this wasn't such a good idea...)
Next step: HBOOT 2.00.0002 DOWNGRADE:
- When I try to use zergRush it's not working (189 zergs and then Hellions bla bla). As i read later on a German page zergRush is not working with T-Mobile branded phones.
- tacoroot also doesnt work. Is it true that it's not working once you used the HTCDev unlocker?
- This workaround didn't work, too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919
at "Step 2: Modifying the version of your phone" I get "acces denied" after running the command "su".
I'm a total noob regarding Android. I used Windows Mobile before and never had a problem with flashing etc. and I didn't expect that it would be so complicated with Android
I'm very thankful for every hint. Thanks in advance!!
xtc clip will work
But I'd say for now be happy with custom roms and don't worry about s off
Just remember to separately flash boot image
Swyped from my Desire S using XDA Premium
You allready unlocked the Bootloader. But you did a little mistake as you used HTC Unlock Tool. This Method don't set the Bootloader to S-OFF. Now if you want to install a Custom Rom over Recovery you have to extract the boot.img from the ROM.zip and flash ist seperatly in Fastboot.
The best way is to look for a Tutorial to S-OFF the Bootloader after HTC Unlock Tool. Then you will have a complete S-OFFed Boatloader and can isntall a Recovery (for example ClockworkMod via RomManager (from Market/Google Play Store)).
@klausewitz23
Step 1 Install a custom recovery!!!!! (either 4ext or clockworkmod)
Step 2) Use recovery to flash su-3.0.5-efgh-signed
Now you have root and the su command will work
Step 3) Now you can downgrade to s-off
Little point in downgrading though... since you are HTCdev unlocked already.

does it work for a stock unbranded desire s with s-on and hboot 2.... too? i can´t get any method to work too

Thank your for your advice foX2delta! But I cannot install a custom rom since my phone is not rooted. At least that'S the message I get if I try to install ClockworkMod Recovery using the ROM Manager.
HTCDev.com is an official unlock tool for all Desire S variants with Hboot 2.x. The only difference between this and S-OFF is that you need to flash the boot.img of each ROM separately after you flash it, or ROM won't boot.

Flash one of these images via fastboot. You can then use these to flash ROMs. No need for root
my phone is now rooted (i also used the htc unlock methd), then i installed superuser and 4ext but when i reboot into recovery, there comes a black screen with a green sign and after a few seconds the green sign turns into a red one and i have to pull out the battery to restart the phone. i can´t get to run the 4ext recovery...
@klausewitz23
Follow section 1, Step 2 and 3 of this guide
Follow until "All DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
You can get the recovery images from shrome99 post above.

Hello there guys,
Been trying to root my XL from Telstra (AUS) but some weird things are going on.
Can't figure out why i'm unable to to SuperCid my phone, my current Supercid is TELST001
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952038
Also, tried to root my phone using this thread below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859478
So far, I have achieved to Installed S-OFF and CWM.
What i'm trying to do here is to use any 4.22 Android Rom with sense 5, like CleanROM or CyanogenMod 10
Im uploading some of the current photos taken so you guys can have more information on S-OFF and CWM.
Thanks in advance.
Ps: One of the pictures was a Failed OTA from Telstra, is there a way to go back to and be able to install the OTA from Telstra instead of any custom ROM (In case we cant find what is causing the phone to block the supercid and the super SU)
Ota won't work with a custom recovery.
I am running MagioR4 sense 5 4.2.2 you can install that now without doing anything else to your phone. There are a few others as well, but this is only one I've been running so I can't say much about others, but assume they will work out just as well.

Is there a need to Super Cid and if i were to use the OTA, can i remove the custom recovery?

That's the carrier ID (CID) not SuperCID. SuperCID is 11111111 or 22222222. I think you know that, but let's get the terms right to avoid confusion.
You don't have S-off. It says right in your screenshot that the phone is still s-on.
But you it says UNLOCKED, so your bootloader is unlocked. All S-on means is that you can still install custom ROMs, you just have to flash boot.img seperately from fastboot.
As mentioned, you have to return to stock recovery in order to be able to install OTAs. Easiest way is to RUU back to stock. But be completely sure you are not SuperCID, otherwise S-on + SuperCID + Jellybean RUU = BRICK.
Personally, going stock just to install the stock 4.2.2 ROM is a step backward, not forward, as you already have an unlocked bootloader and cutom recovery. But you also seem confused about a number of things. I would suggest reading and more fully understanding the concepts and processes before proceeding with any further mods to the phone.

Unlocking the bootloader does't root the phone. You can flash an SU package in recovery to obtain root, or flash a rooted ROM.
You don't need SuperCID for anything but s-off.

CleanROM is neither 4.2.2 nor Sense 5. CM10 is an AOSP ROM, so by definition not a Sense ROM at all.

No you've got it backwards. The boot.img goes in your fastboot folder on your pc, not on your phone.
You need to fastboot flash the boot.img from each ROM you want to flash. So, if you want to install CM10.2, you must extract the boot.img from the ROM zip and put it in your fastboot folder on your pc (not your sd card in your phone). Then you put the ROM zip on your phone, and install it in recovery (after wiping cache/dalvik cache/factory reset/system), then reboot to bootloader and flash the boot.img using fastboot. You must follow this process for each new ROM you want to flash.
Do a backup of your current setup in recovery before flashing anything new though.

By the way, even though our phone doesn't have a physical sd slot, we refer to the stage as the sd card.

It would be highly beneficial for you to read the top post of any ROM thread you want to install, as the dev usually has some important info. In the ROM you linked, it clearly says:
Installation Instructions (These are all required)
1.S-Off your device (Do this before RUU'ing and it will not wipe your /sdcard).
2.Update to 3.18 RUU.
Also, at a minimum, I will read the last few pages (most recent) of the ROM thread, just to see if there are any prominent bugs or, issues or useful tips being discussed.

I think you are misunderstanding what I mean when I say "flash the boot.img using fastboot". You need to extract the boot.img from the ROM you want to flash (boot.img us often specific to the ROM). With boot.img on your computer, flash it to the phone using fastboot.
There are ways to flash boot.img without a computer. But since you specifically mentioned fastboot, the file does not go on your SD card in this case.
But again, this is not particularly applicable to CM10.2, since the dev is specifically recommending to have s-off before flashing. S-off means you do not have to flash boot.img seperately (it happens automatically when you flash the ROM in recovery).
Also, the phone does have an SD, its just not removable. Think of it as a virtual SD card.

Hi there,
Im trying to Update the RUU as per this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382933
However, I'm getting an error called 155, which says that Im trying to install the wrong RUU
I was trying to update the RUU, then restart the phone, went into S-off, then into recovery and Wipe factory/data reset, then install the CM10.2 build
Is something missing here?
Thanks.
Which RUU are you trying to install? The 3.18 RUU suggested at the start of the thread?
My suggestion is to get s-off first, and you need to get SuperCID before you get s-off. Flash any rooted sense ROM from the development section, you need root to get SuperCID.

Its saying wrong RUU, because its the wrong RUU.
If you are S-on, you can only run an RUU meant for your Telstra version.
It appears you ignored my previous advice to read up on the basic concepts and procedures, before continuing to try to mod the phone.

I think this is a lost cause. You aren't even reading what people have replied to you. I clearly stated in post #4 above, you DO NOT have s-off.

Like Redpoint just said, you can't install an RUU from another carrier (the 3.18 RUU is at&t) while you're s-on. You don't have s-off, look at the screenshots you attached earlier, in your bootloader it says s-on. You have an unlocked bootloader which is an entirely different thing.
Unless you've flashed a superuser zip or flashed a rooted ROM you don't have root. Root just means that you have administrative access to system files in a ROM. The real thing you need to install custom ROMs is an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery.
I'm gonna be honest, you're in over your head and you're ignoring good advice which was given to prevent you from damaging your phone.
You really have two choices: either do a hell of a lot of reading until you have a firm understanding of what you're doing, or leave your phone alone. The way you're going right now you're on track to destroy your phone.

I have not ignored your advised, It rather hard to understand all this, since there is no Indication for the right RUU, since the thread i'm looking at, does not mention anything in regards of using a different RUU.
I apologise If you feel like i'm ignoring your advised, I would rather ask you now, What should I do?
Are you able to do some prompts in regards of what to do?
So far, IMAO I need to to this:
Flash the Correct RUU (Gotta find it first)
Use S-off to Install the Custom ROM (ROM is already copied to the phone's memory)
Install the new Custom ROM, however, not to sure about the GApps, which are google apps.

I guess that you need to copy them before you install the new ROM?
Thank you for your patience.

As you've been told at least 3 times now, what you should do is READ READ READ.
None of this is hard to understand once you start diving into it and learning.
I'm personally not going to spoonfeed you any more steps (and suggest against doing it either), as shortcutting the learning process is only going to turn your phone into an expensive paperweight.

We're getting there, here are the exact steps you need to take:
1) Read a lot.
2) Read some more.
3) Flash a superuser zip on your current stock ROM, or flash a rooted Sense ROM so you have root.
4) Get SuperCID.
5) Get s-off.
6) RUU to latest.
7) Flash whatever ROM you want.

Good catch. I missed that.
To the OP: you don't need to RUU to install cm10.2 on your device as you already have the required hboot/firmware. Without s-off you will need to manually flash the boot.img using fastboot though.

Hi there!
I found a thread about rooting, flashing ROMs...etc...for your device.
Please read post number 3 in the thread. It explains in detail how to return to stock.
> HTC One X+ > One X+ General > [HOW TO] Unlock bootloader, Root, Flash Custom ROM, Flash Kernel
If you have any further issues, that would also be the perfect thread to ask for more help.
Good luck! ?

Q&A for [s-off] moonshine s-off for ville_c2

Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
Hello everyone.
I tried using Moonshine to S-OFF my HTC One S (villec2), which didn’t quite go as intended and now I’m stuck in a boot loop.
I downloaded Moonshine from the Moonshine website, under HTC One S – S3 model (ville_c2), first download for ROM version 3.19.401.101 (I got that version number from Software information somewhere in Settings). I then made sure that the phone had Fast boot disabled under power options, turned off the screen lock, connected the phone to the desktop (running Ubuntu 14.10) via the USB cable, and did sudo ./distiller. Moonshine did its magic for a few minutes and, in the end, the phone was powered off. However, when I powered it on, it got stuck in a boot loop.
Now, to solve this, I rebooted into recovery mode (I’ve got something that says CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4, not quite sure where I got that) and tried restoring the backup I had previously made and/or wiping caches, none of which seemed to help.
So here’s where I am now: I can boot into bootloader just fine. The bootloader says moonshine S-OFF on top. Normal boot is stuck in a boot loop; it shows the regular splash screen for a few seconds, then a window entitled Android is upgrading… and a spinning progress thingy along with Optimizing app 1 of 24. for a second, then Starting apps. for a few more seconds, then the screen just turns off and the loop begins anew. Occasionally I can see, for a brief moment, an error message right at the end; I can’t quite discern what it says, but it is about a crash of something with gapps in its name.
During the boot loop, I can connect to the phone using ADB (and by that I mean that I can access the shell with adb shell or reboot into bootloader or recovery with adb reboot bootloader or adb reboot recovery). Oddly enough, when I try to power down, the phone doesn’t power down but reboots into recovery instead. I tried powering it down by: holding the power button for a really long time (this, however, just restarts the boot loop); FASTBOOT → POWER DOWN from the bootloader; adb reboot -p; adb shell → reboot -p.
So, what do I do now? (I apologize if I made some obvious mistake with the procedure described above, or with making this post…)
EDIT: I also forgot to mention that the Moonshine directory seems to contain a file called boot_backup.img; can it help me with anything?
i have a problem with s-on. this app solved.
thanks for s-off
Hi, i want to thank all the people involved into moonshine's s-off solution for villec2. I've run it on 64-bit Debian Wheezy. It worked perfect. Finally my One S is free .
I can't thank you on solution thread because i have not enough posts to post anywhere.
The CID for my One S was ORANGB10. It was bought in ORANGE PL.
Thanks again.

I would recommend to have a close to stock ROM for rumrunner too. I remember I've used Viper at that time for this purpose

Here is the thread for Ville S4 dunno anything about C2 and I won't recommend you to flash or use any procedure from here unless it's stated that works for C2. You might risk bricking your device otherwise

Ok, i understand that. I have one question for every one, can i install ota update on s-on, s-off its need or not? I have on my htc one s ville 2 s-on, i cant unlock bootloader, always relocked, many, many times i try, one_kit_v, or easy Unlock tools or direct on htcdev, always phone acept comand end always acept on screen yes unlock press power key, but stay relocked. In app get cid from gp, says htc__044-asia wwe, but in cmd fastboot getvar cid stay 11111, im confused, many question, but no answer, i hope so its riff jtag box not only solution on my phone. Thanks anyway!
I guess having S-On for Ville C2 means same thing...that is, you must flash kernel in fastboot mode after every ROM flash.
So you could use OTA but after installing OTA you have to go to fastboot and flash the kernel from that OTA. It also means you should open the OTA zip on your PC and extract it from there to have it at hand when needed

1-. if you want to install another RUU different at you CID you need be a S-OFF and SuperCID.
2-. if you want to install .zip rom flashed from recovery you DONT need be a S-OFF, but, after flash a rom you need flash boot.mg from fastboot.
3-.The problem with unlock boot loader its very strange, i relock and unlock boot loader a lot of time and no problems.
Hey guys
I sincerely apologize in advance if this is wrong thread to post such question in. Please be so kind to redirect me to the right thread, I just got registered
Here's my problem. Couple of days ago my phone (HTC One S, villec2, S-ON, here's the picture from bootloader http://tinypic.com/r/qo87k6/8) started behaving somewhat out of the order. Every process that was there, everything started throwing out errors with the likes of Google play has stopped working, Music has stopped working, Messages has stopped working, nothing was the same as it was before that. And nothing else like cleaning the phone with some apps from Google Play didn't help. Therefore, I decided to install myself a custom ROM
Phone was already rooted two days after I got it. It was pretty straightforward process really. That was two years ago. I needed root acess to install some app that required root acess, don't ask me which app was this because I don't remember, honestly. It also installed TWRP 2.6.0.0 and SuperSU
I downloaded ROM (this one in particular http://www.android.gs/update-htc-one-s-to-android-5-1-1-lollipop-with-resurrection-remix-5-4-4-custom-rom/), followed instructions, got into TWRP and this is when the turd hit the fan. Instructions said that I need to wipe my phone. I did just that, with one exepction - I wiped everything from my phone. Spare me saying that I'm an idiot, I've got over that fact already
Basically, TWRP said that no OS is installed. Everything was wiped out from internal SD card aswell, including my ROM file that I put on the phone. I tried with mounting USB storage, which got me into the SD card on my PC and I've put ROM file on it again. So I tried flashing the ROM with TWRP but it kept telling me that my device is not supported to install this ROM
So I was stuck in bootloader with option to flash TWRP.img file from fastboot enviroment on PC, nothing more than that
I've tried at least 4 different ROM-s. One got installed on my phone but when I rebooted my device it got stuck on HTC logo screen and kept rebooting (boot loop I think it's called) until I manually got into bootloader with combination of power down+volume down button
So I started looking for solutions. I found out, that there's two different "flavours" of HTC One S. One is ville, the other one is villec2, which I have. I've read all about RUU files that can help me recover my phone but after searching through http://androidruu.com/?developer=VilleC2 I found nothing that can help me. I've downloaded two different RUU's, locked and unlocked bootloader twice, rebooted RUU but none of them was compatible with my phone
I've seen something about OTA manual updates, which I also tried but it didn't do anything. I've tried flashing firmware.zip that I got from OTA update file, flashed boot.img but then the phone got to the point where it should update but it kept showing me red triangle. The only option was, again, to boot it into bootloader and I was back at square one
Then I read something about turning your phone S-OFF with that moonshine software and about installing any RUU I want without complications. So I got one and realized that I can't do anything with it because my phone only boots in bootloader and as far as I understand, you need to run distiller.exe while the device is turned on and it has to be in Android OS. Which is not an option with me, because as I said, I can only boot my phone into bootloader and then boot something else via fastboot commands on my PC
Am I screwed here? I've tried literally every single thing, I've looked over dozens of recovery guides for this phone but none of them worked for me. I heard that I need exactly the same ROM (matching CID and everything) that was previously installed on the device. Thing is that I didn't do any backup of stock ROM before all that fiasco. I've tried this site too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2200930 but all links seem dead, because it only shows me some advertisement things and nothing else
I know I got myself in a situation where anyone with a bit more brain than me would use this bricked phone as a paperweight but I'm stubborn enough to try just about everything to revive my device. At this moment it's stuck in bootloop. I can't boot into recovery because it only keeps rebooting over and over and over again. Fastboot recognizes my device if I type fastboot devices into command prompt but that's just about it
So please, if somebody has the slightest idea what am I to do, tell me all about it because I've ran out of ideas and there's nothing more to my knowledge to try at this point. Thanks in advance!

rooting my Htc one s
I have followed every steps shown on the post, Tutorial, Root, Unlock, Recovery and Flashing, from unlocking the bootloader to flashing the supersu zip file and it seems everythings have worked out just fine. However when I reboot it to android I didn't find the supersu installed. I flashed the zip file on the recovery sucessfully. Not sure whyit still not rooted. Any ideas what went wrong?
GoreTan,
You weren't the only one who made this mistake. I made the same mistake, and I'm so glad that I found this thread and your solution. I just missed the "recovery" word in the command.
Got stuck on 'Entering Recovery...'
I get stuck when I try to enter Recovery mode....
It displays 'Entering Recovery...' and nothing happens after that.
Please help ASAP.
