[Q] No S-OFF method seems to work :(. Help please - HTC Desire S

Hello everyone,
After trying to S-OFF my Desire S for over TWO WHOLE DAYS now, I finally have enough and I hope someone can help me, please
I have a branded phone (T-Mobile, Germany) with following stats:
Bootloader information:
*** UNLOCKED ***
SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0002
RADIO-3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC-boot
Aug 22 2011, 15:22:13
Software information:
Android Version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense version: 3.0
Software number: 2.10.111.8
The first thing I did was to unlock the bootloader using the official tool by htc (just to find out afterwards that this wasn't such a good idea...)
Next step: HBOOT 2.00.0002 DOWNGRADE:
- When I try to use zergRush it's not working (189 zergs and then Hellions bla bla). As i read later on a German page zergRush is not working with T-Mobile branded phones.
- tacoroot also doesnt work. Is it true that it's not working once you used the HTCDev unlocker?
- This workaround didn't work, too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919
at "Step 2: Modifying the version of your phone" I get "acces denied" after running the command "su".
I'm a total noob regarding Android. I used Windows Mobile before and never had a problem with flashing etc. and I didn't expect that it would be so complicated with Android
I'm very thankful for every hint. Thanks in advance!!

xtc clip will work
But I'd say for now be happy with custom roms and don't worry about s off
Just remember to separately flash boot image
Swyped from my Desire S using XDA Premium

You allready unlocked the Bootloader. But you did a little mistake as you used HTC Unlock Tool. This Method don't set the Bootloader to S-OFF. Now if you want to install a Custom Rom over Recovery you have to extract the boot.img from the ROM.zip and flash ist seperatly in Fastboot.
The best way is to look for a Tutorial to S-OFF the Bootloader after HTC Unlock Tool. Then you will have a complete S-OFFed Boatloader and can isntall a Recovery (for example ClockworkMod via RomManager (from Market/Google Play Store)).

@klausewitz23
Step 1 Install a custom recovery!!!!! (either 4ext or clockworkmod)
Step 2) Use recovery to flash su-3.0.5-efgh-signed
Now you have root and the su command will work
Step 3) Now you can downgrade to s-off
Little point in downgrading though... since you are HTCdev unlocked already.

Make goldcard just in case (check here)

does it work for a stock unbranded desire s with s-on and hboot 2.... too? i can´t get any method to work too

Thank your for your advice foX2delta! But I cannot install a custom rom since my phone is not rooted. At least that'S the message I get if I try to install ClockworkMod Recovery using the ROM Manager.

HTCDev.com is an official unlock tool for all Desire S variants with Hboot 2.x. The only difference between this and S-OFF is that you need to flash the boot.img of each ROM separately after you flash it, or ROM won't boot.

Download one of these recoveries -
REGULAR CWM - http://bit.ly/wvcHBS
TOUCH CWM - http://bit.ly/AkBqYt
Flash one of these images via fastboot. You can then use these to flash ROMs. No need for root

my phone is now rooted (i also used the htc unlock methd), then i installed superuser and 4ext but when i reboot into recovery, there comes a black screen with a green sign and after a few seconds the green sign turns into a red one and i have to pull out the battery to restart the phone. i can´t get to run the 4ext recovery...

@klausewitz23
Follow section 1, Step 2 and 3 of this guide
Follow until "All DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
You can get the recovery images from shrome99 post above.

It worked!!! Thank you so much shrome99! I'm totally satisfied with this solution
Also big thx to foX2delta! I will keep this method in mind, but right now I'm just happy with the current state

[Q - PARTLY SOLVED] HBOOT 2.00.0002 S-ON UNLOCKED - Won't boot or accept any RUU

Right after playing around with my dev desire-s, i'm stuck:
I have hboot 2.00.0002 with S-ON and unlocked using htcdev
4ext on recovery
I want to either run stock 2.10 rom or downgrade to 1.47
Running 2.10 RUU gives error 155 same with RUU 1.47
using 4ext to flash PB99IMG of 2.10 doesn't work (ie does boot)
funny thing: looking at the partition table in 4ext its missing the /devlog and /system/lib partitions.
I did try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919 but no success
anybody have a clue what i'm doing wrong ??
Thanks

.... Follow this guide buddy and hope it will solve your issue.............
Guys i followed these guides... only to find i had s-on still after unlocking bootloader from HTCDEV but could not root install a recovery fornthis very reason of s-0n
here is how i manged to work round it and all good for me.
1 i downloaded the new android fash tool in android development section.
2 i downloaded a clockmod recovery .img for my desire s phone.
3 i installed the android flash tool which i found to be user friendly and then i loaded the recovery .img in in which the android tool have drop down boxes (so easy)
4 i pressed the flash button after loading .img in the android flash tool...........and thats it i have a recovery image installed on my desire s with s-on.
NEXT STEP.....
i then rooted my phone this way
1 i downloaded from the su zipfile from the alpharevx/revu help page looks like this.......Does Revolutionary give me root?
No. You will need to flash this zipfile from recovery.
2 i installed this file to my root of sdcard
3 as i have a recovery in fast boot now i select install zip from sd
4 install the file you loaded on your sd.... something like this...su-2.3.6.3efgh-singed
ALL DONE YOU HAVE CLOCKMOD RECOVERY AND ROOTED WITH S-ON WITH A UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER FROM HTCDEV.
hope this all helps if not been coverd before but of course at your own risk.

You do not use recovery to flash a PB99img.zip file. You copy it to the root directory of your SD card and the boot into HBOOT and it will then ask you to apply the update.
partly solved by doing this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330400&page=5
ie, i can now boot custom rom, still need to check if stock rom will work

Good catch. I completely missed that in his previous post. He should be renaming the file to PG88IMG.zip.

You probably flashed the recovery for the regular Ville (S4 processor). The one you have is VilleC2 (S3 processor). This is the recovery I would recommend:

[Q] Installation Help

A few days ago I decided to finally replace my stock ROM with cyanogenmod 9.
After lots of reading and lots of trial and (even more) error I managed to gain S-off.
"The internet" tells me this is a very good situation because now I have the possibility to flash a new recovery and with that new recovery gain root.
And after gaining root installing cyanogenmod is possible.
Is the above information correct? if not, could you explain or elaborate? this makes it easier for me to grasp the huge pile of information that there is laying around on the internets.
The actual question I'm having is: How can I install a new recovery? and how can I check if a new recovery has been installed?
Information given when starting up with volume down + power button:
Code:
=JuopunutBear=
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.27.1111
RADIO-11.29A.3504.18_M

Yes that is correct. You need now to ulnlock your bootloader, root and install custom recovery. Then you will be able to install your favorite custom rom. To unlock your bootloader go to htcdev.com and follow instructions. To root and install custom recovery the easiest way (in my opinion) is to use one of the multi-tasks tools available for sensation , you can find these tools here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668276
or here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497404
Please read the instructions carefully before you start the process to avoid any possible risls of bricking your phone.
Please make sure you have htc drivers installed, and htc sync program uninstalled.
Good luck.

Thanks this post was really helpfull.
Turns out the all the other recoveries I flashed weren't really succesfull despite the succes-messages.
After flashing the recovery, recovery mode was something different then normal start-up:laugh:
I used the method from the same guide to gain root acces using recovery mode and after that i succesfully flashed cyanogenmod 9 also using recovery mode (2 attempts were made first time i didnt wipe the factory presets) .
Forcing a paper clip down into the hardware of the phone was usefull after all!
Thanks all for the help & advice!!!
To really check if I understand it now, can someone say if the info below is correct?
The bootloader is used to load the kernel and after that the rom runnning the kernel.
Recovery is only activated when booting with volume down + power and is used to change the rom.
S-off means that some safe-guards are turned off enabling more changes to be made.

then flash the rom

avoid that
every time you are entering to bootloader always checking the sdcard for pg58img.zip or pg58diag.zip file

[Q] ROM question about installing

I want to install "[ROM][AROMA] KickDroidXL v5.2.0" but my htc one x (at&t) is completely stock.
So: step 1: unlocked with htcdev.com
step 2: Custom recovery
step 3: Firmware
Based on the "you need" info
Step 4: flash rom.
(I think i will s-off as well my mobile)
My questions are:
1) Is there any problem if i keep stock recovery?
2) On firmware instructions that is given here: "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485865" 4th post
how should i do this throught commands (i use windows) or through my phone's screen when it is powered up by volume down and power buttons??
thanks a lot!

Before I can give any advice on the steps you need to take I need to see your bootloader details, the first five lines will do. I can answer your questions though.
1. You can't keep the stock recovery, a custom recovery is required on a modified phone.
2. The commands are issued through a command prompt on a Windows PC (you need to have adb/fastboot installed on the PC).

There are some changes of the planes and because of lack "playing" with my mobile i haven't reply you. So i desided to go for CyanogenMod 11.0 so instractions are:
" 1.S-Off your device (Do this before RUU'ing and it will not wipe your /sdcard).
2.Update to 3.18 RUU or later.
3.Flash a custom recovery (TWRP/CWM with SELinux capabilities).
4.Download latest nightly from http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=evita.
5.Locate 4.4 Gapps via a quick Google search.
6.Wipe factory/data reset in recovery before installing CM11.0 (unless you are already on a CM11.0 build).
7.Reboot into recovery and install nightly and gapps."
Before the instraction i think i should root and unlock the bootloader, so i used "[TOOL] HTC One X (Evita) All-In-One Toolkit V3.0.1 [7-7-2013] [PERM ROOT][Noob-Proof]" to unlock bootloader and root the phone. I have done this. I will (haven't do it yet) s-off and then flash custom recovery. Then it is the easy part i thing, (same as in every device, i have done it to htc desire).
So my question is am i rooted? Some apps like titanium backup and adfree gives me error, that is why i am thinging or i am not rooted or i have to "gain" su access through terminal. For flashing custome recovery i will use "[TOOL] HTC One X (Evita) All-In-One Toolkit V3.0.1 [7-7-2013] [PERM ROOT][Noob-Proof]" and for s-off i will try to use this guide "[S-Off] Facepalm S-Off for HTC One XL" any easier suggestions about s-off??
So to make our life easier here is what i get form power button + volume down:
*** UNLOCKED ***
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.14.0002
RADIO-0.19as.32.09.11_2

Forget about using the toolkit, all it does is act as a crutch and it clearly hasn't succeeded in rooting your device. Plus, it removes some vital learning experience which you definitely need.
You don't need root yet if you're going to flash a custom ROM. All that's required to install a custom recovery is an unlocked bootloader which you already have. The custom ROMs you want to install are pre-rooted.
To install a recovery is very simple, all it takes is a few fastboot commands. Download the modified version of TWRP 2.6.3.0 from here. Put the file in your fastboot folder. Connect phone in fastboot mode, open command prompt from within fastboot folder, issue the following commands:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "filename.img"
(the exact filename, minus the talking marks)
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Once you've done this all you need to do is find a ROM and gapps and install them. Take a look at the Evita FAQ thread and the How-To Guide For Beginners thread in my signature, they contain some very valuable information that you'll need.

I found what i did wrong so now i have root my mobile! The guide that you posted is very helpfull, thanks for that! One last question though (hopefully last) i still have to go s-off for flashing CyanogenMod 11.0 since it is in the installation procedure right?? Thanks again.
You do need s-off, because you need to run the 3.18 RUU in order to flash any current aosp ROM. You must have s-off before you run the RUU or you'll brick.

I have done everything exept s-off. So now what i get in the "info" screen is what i had before, but at the begging it says *** TAMPERED *** , root works as well. The thing is i tried s-off using this method "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155071" and i had exactly what it says i mean both in screens and the 92 error, but i always was s-on when system boot to bootloader at the end. I tried more times and after a point i tried the toolkit, from that point error 92 turned to error 99 (unkown error). Now this holds for both ways that i try. Any ideas what i do wrong? By the way i made a backup before starting the whole procedure. Thanks again and sorry for asking, but everything else was solven by reading and i can not reach as many info about s-off as it was for root.
The tampered flag in your bootloader is normal, that means you have root, nothing to worry about. The error 99 problem can be solved by forcing a reboot to the bootloader (directly after getting error 99) by using the volume down + power button combo, then starting the s-off procedure again from the beginning. Or you could try the Rumrunner s-off method instead. That does require an unsecured kernel though so if you're still on a stock ROM it probably won't work. It should work if you flash the Kickdroid ROM first though.

I just show the so wanted s-off. I read somewhere that error 99 will turn to "normal error 92" after rebooting. So yesterday i did 3 reboots and felt to sleep and today i tried the same procedure and now i am s-off! Sorry for the nagging!!

Ok i need your help again, if it is possible. I try to flash cm11 rom and i got the:
"E:error executing updater binary in zip ..........

Do you know if there might be a problem with compatibility?? I mean if i try to restore back up made with TWRP 2.5 when i have the unofficial modified TWRP 2.6.3.0??i bet there is a backwords compatibility, right?
thanks again!
From all reports I've seen, they're not compatible. But even if you didn't want to flash KitKat ROMs you should never use TWRP 2.5 because it's super buggy and will cause issues. I'd say just flash the unofficial TWRP 2.6.3.0 and install the KitKat ROM of your choice. If you need to go back to stock there are other ways apart from a backup you can do it.

[Q] Stuck on Hboot/fastboot with full stock phone

Hi guys,
My sister sent me her HTC One SV aka K2-UL i offered her from expansys on june, it is stuck on Hboot
*** LOCKED***
K2_UL XA SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0000
eMMC Boot
...
I can go to Fastboot USB ( or AC )
She 's worst than a noob so phone is stock, up to date but non-root non-unlock, still S-ON and so on.
just once phone reboot and stay stuck...
From here i can navigate but after reboot i'm still here.
I tried :
factory reset and recovery (with rom renamed PL80DIAG but would be too easy...)
RUU but RUU asked for bootloader so stuck on "waiting for bootloader"
go to htc dev to unlock bootloader but after flash unlock token ( unlock token check successfully) but : Nothing happens and still writtten ***Locked*** then if I "fastboot oem unlock" it says failed :<remote : loading custom splash failed>
fastboot flash boot.img but nothing works since still S-on and locked bootloader (superCID is out too)
flash custom recovey or even fresh stock recovery but nothing worked for the same reasons...
Do you guys have any idea of something i could do?
Thanks for your answer and forgive my English I'm French
As long as you are ***LOCKED*** you can quiet do nothing.
To use our available RUU you must also be unlocked & S-Off.
Somewhat the same situation
I am stuck here:
***Tampered***
***Unlocked***

I can get into Fastboot as well as bootloader, I CANNOT GET INTO RECOVERY. I have tried to restore with the respective RUU files from the All things HTC ONE SV forum. I have also tried to flash the recovery boot and radio img files through fastboot usb. NONE of this has worked for me. I really enjoyed this phone before I went and made it all FUBR. If there is anyway to get it to boot to any recovery or rom, i will much appreciate it. Thanks for all your help from previous posts as well as any future help I get from information posted here.
Related to your hboot, you should be able to flash any recoveries, but i usually recommend this one.
What command do you use to flash recovery and do you get an output from "fastboot devices"?

Thanks a million for the replies. I was able to lead the recovery and get into it (the most progress i have had in a year with this phone). With that being done. When I go into recovery I am unable to mount the internal storage. I am not too sure of the procedures I need to go through to get this thing functional again. I have been tinkering with my S3 for the last few months, but with KNOX on now I am looking to Jump ship completely from both verizon and samsung. Enough rambling, Like I said thanks for the help, any assistance in getting this thing to boot to a ROM would be much appreciated.
BTW
I used the fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
I have tried this before with no success. This time it worked.
I also flased the Radio and Boot img for ICS.
Thanks.

If you want I can just skip you to 4.2.2. You don't need to reflash recovery and stuff. I will make a package that will update HBOOT and radios. And system/boot.img.

He first needs to be S-off, to flash radio & hboot. I have made a 4.1.2 rom for cricket, must be linked in my index thread. Wipe all, flash the rom, flash boot.imgwith fastboot and hope that little baby is booting.
If yes, use moonshine.io or rumrunner.us to get S-off.
Then we will do next steps.

Wow! Awsome! This bad boy booted. I was able to flash the rom through recovery. This is much further than I expected to get with this device. Now when I try to go S-Off with either moonshine or rumrunner I get an error saying not able to make adb connection. When I use fastboot devices my device will show up...if i do adb devices nothing...Would love to have S-Off and SU installed. But like I said this is much further than I expected to get so anything further is icing on the cake. Thanks in Advance.
Is Usb-Debugging enabled?
Any output from adb devices? HTC Sync installed (for the drivers)?

He can just use the Naked Driver for the adb driver. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263822
Ok I DID have USB debugging enabled. After messing with the drivers and my Windows 8 computer, I have came to the conclusion that it is something with the drivers and their compatibility with Windows 8. Either way moonshine or rumnunner never worked for me in a windows 8 environment. I dual boot ubuntu 12.04 anyway, it saw my device just fine adb and fastboot. I ran moonshine and it went through all the testing stages, but was never able to completely run...so I still have no S-Off. Do I need to update Hboot or anything? Also am I able to load a custom rom on this device with S-ON? I have been looking but I do not see many out for this device at all, which is a shame because I feel as though it is very comparable to my GS3. It would be nice to see a nice AOSP ROM on this device. But all take any updates I can for the device, hopefully it will help with the issue I have will cell reception dropping all the time. Thanks
To answer some of your questions:
- you can't update hboot because you are not stock and not S-off
- there are indeed not much roms to flash, but you could do with S-on (and unlocked bootloader)
- if you would flash the Sense 5/Android 4.2.2 rom, you would have noizy sound, without the firmware files (which you need S-Off to flash)
Another way for getting S-off (which should work with your hboot), is facepalm.
But the part of changing CID to SuperCID is very risky, read carefully and only do, when you are sure you understand, what to do!!!

Thanks for all the help! I am now SuperCID with S-OFF, Facepalm worked like a charm. Would it be possible to put slimrom on this device? Anyway thanks for all the help, I am going to check out some ROMS..as far as flashing goes, I am assuming how I have my phone now I should be able to flash any rom that is compatible with the device.

You're completely S-OFF? The radios and new HBOOT update need to be flashed in RUU mode. Let me get my bearings and you can flash everything. (adb reboot oem-42 or fastboot oem rebootRUU is a way to get to RUU mode.)

Yes I am completely S-OFF with CID 111111 and SU. The phone has been working good, Cricket service is not all that great in my area. I see there is a software update 2.04.1050.5 (15.1 MB), I am assuming if i run this update it will most likely wipe everything I just did. Is this correct?

If you get an error (flush again or something.), then just resend the command. (fastboot flash zip path/to/rom.zip)
