Q&A for [HBOOT] Upgrade and Downgrade to any HBOOT
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [HBOOT] Upgrade and Downgrade to any HBOOT. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!

Upgrading only the hboot isn't what you're meant to do, you're meant to upgrade your firmware (which contains the hboot). Go to my guide thread in my signature, I have full instructions there.

The hboot is basically your bootloader, it's the first thing that runs when your phone boots up. It isn't your hboot that you need to worry about though, it's your entire firmware (which contains the hboot). What ROM are you on? What are your bootloader details? To boot into the bootloader there are two methods.
With phone powered on
Hold the volume down button, then hold the power button (so you're holding both buttons together), the button lights will start to flash, they will stop flashing and the screen will go blank, after a couple of seconds let go of the power button but continue to hold the volume down button until you reach the white screen with text, this is your bootloader.
With phone powered off
Hold the volume down button, then hold the power button (so you're holding both buttons together), after a couple of seconds let go of the power button but continue to hold the volume down button until you reach the white screen with text, this is your bootloader.
Please post the first five lines.

Asking which ROM is best isn't allowed on XDA. The best way to find out is by flashing and experiencing yourself.

Can someone tell me the benifits of hboot 1.09... I am currently on 1.14 with s-on
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
With hboot 1.09 and S-on, boot.img is flashed automatically from recovery anytime you flash a ROM (does not need to be flashed using fastboot). Also, radios can be flashed from recovery.
Both are possible now (with any hboot) if you are s-off. So I'd recommend s-off.
Also, this should have been posted to the Q&A forum section. So I've reported to the mods to move it.
Moved to Q&A
Wait... So can I just install cm from their website? If I flash the boot.img?

Be careful what you install from cm site. There are roms that are for the international one x and if you flash those you will brick your device. Stay on this forum and scan original android development thread, that's where you will find the correct cm roms..

Thanks, also, what are the benefits of S-off??
You can find the answer to that if you just read. Buuuuut, it removes security checks basically, so you can really flash anything to your device.
This means you can run any RUU (for this device) without having to relock the bootloader etc, it also means that people on hboot 2.14 are able to flash kernels in recovery instead of flashing boot.img through fastboot. Plus you can downgrade touchscreen firmware, remove red text from splash screen, and edit "tampered" flags within hboot I believe.
This also comes with risks though. Because there are no security checks, it's easier to brick if you flash something that is not intended for our device (ROM / RUU).

If you want to flash aosp ROMs you need to. If you want to only use Sense ROMs you don't need to. I suggest doing just so you have that freedom in future.

As mentioned, its best to stay on this forum, to be sure you don't flash something not intended for this device. Check out my Index thread for links to ROMs intended for our device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237

All true. Plus, there is some type of bug where if your phone is SuperCID and S-on, you can brick if you try to install official the JB OTA or RUU. S-off removed this particular risk factor.

If you install the JB OTA or RUU, it will upgrade the touch panel firmware, which is not compatible with AOSP ROMs. The touch panel firmware is independent of hboot, ROM or radio. So only a JB RUU or OTA will give you the updated touch panel firmware.
So if you for some reason end up running the RUU or OTA, and end up with the newer touch panel firmware, and want to run AOSP ROMs, you need to downgrade the touch panel firmware (S-off required).
I installed ViperXL on my HTC One X and I was going to install ElementalX kernel on my one X and when it semi bricked I went through the viperXL installer and installed the Stock XL kernal and ever since then it's had a lot of random reboots on whaterver Rom I put it on.
I'm on CleanROM now for one X and it still reboots.
It thinks it's a one XL and I have no idea what to do.

Ive reflashed roms many times. Im pissed cause it keeps reseting and its annoying. So Im trying to use the official RUU Updater to see If that will work, Also my USB is not connecting to my pc corectly. I can only add music or pics from the htc sync manager and its ping me off.
Ok I'd suggest you try using the RUU then, but you'll need to diagnose why it isn't connecting properly via usb first, the last thing you want is for it to disconnect half way through the RUU process.
PS. I understand you're frustrated, but profanity isn't allowed on XDA.

My USB is now functioning as it should but it is now thinking it is a camera instead of a storage unit untill clicked on, Then I see internal storage.
And what is this wierd N in a square by my 4G?
Weird N = NFC. Unfortunately Samsung's had that for a while, and I think Sony and LG have to have that in their notification bar as well. It just means your NFC is toggled on.
Which is a real shame. NFC barely takes any battery power (unless you're back-to-back with another ICS+ NFC phone 24/7) and should always be kept on. Sucks that more space is wasted to the notification bar just to notify you that it's ready for action.

Were you on an old version of TWRP? Because TWRP 2.5 was known to always fail flashing ViperXL and other ROMs (CleanROM and others). More recent versions of TWRP (2.6) work fine. So it may have been the fact that you had to re-install TWRP that made the difference.

first i use this solution :
There's your problem, you need error 92. When you get error 99 you need to force a reboot to bootloader by holding volume down and power then start again (without the adb reboot bootloader command because you're already in bootloader). Now you should get error 92.
and it's not work:crying::crying::crying::crying:
and i use this way :
Ok folks thanks to c5satelite and other helpful folks at S OFF PARTY AND IRC we figured out how to fix this whole "error 99" shenanigans.
Step 1. Download the latest stockish ROM (I used Viper 3.2.3)
Step 2. Boot into bootloader and fastboot flash the kernel.. then reboot back into recovery
Step 3. Wipe /system and factory reset in TWRP
Step 4. Install rom in TWRP
Step 5. For *Viper Only* Don't wipe in Aroma, and uncheck reboot at the end.
Step 6. Reboot into bootloader from recovery (Don't boot into the ROM)
Step 7. Follow the instructions in the OP to a T ... read reread.. go get some coffee.. and try again.. hopefully you see Error 92 and not 99
This worked for me with ViperROM on hboot 2.14
Thank you to all the folks involved you guys are rockstars from Mars!
and it's not work:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
please any help

You need a PC to check your CID. Do you have a working PC?

yes i have
You need to have adb/fastboot and HTC drivers installed. You need to connect your phone in fastboot mode and issue the following fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot oem readcid

I've seen a lot of your other posts and if you can confirm you are unlocked and S-Off then I would recommend checking that you still have a custom recovery. If you do, then mount the SD card and move a Rom over (with GAPPS if you decide to use an AOSP Rom.) Flash the Rom and Flash GAPPS if needed. Follow the directions in the Rom of your choice if they differ from that.
Or
You could Run a RUU and start completely over. Don't forget to flash a custom recovery afterwards in bootloader mode and flash a root program (I recommend SuperSU) in recovery prior to booting the system.:

Just make sure you have an unlocked bootloader and S-Off prior to following any of these recommendations.

Please learn how to post properly to this forum. OP has appeared both here and in my PM, asking for help with 2 different issues and not supplying nearly enough info.
When posting a question, you need to state clearly:
- What you were trying to do (install a ROM, etc.) including what exact steps got you to the place you are at
- whether your phone is stock or modded (bootloader unlocked, rooted, S-on or S-off, etc.)
- what ROM you are on
- the info listed in the first 5 lines of hboot.
Asking for help with one vague sentence doesn't cut it. If you want help, we need details. Don't be lazy and just type vague one-sentence posts, unless you want the same in return.
Also, the question in the OP probably would have been easily answered by simply reading the Frequently Asked Questions sticky at the top of this forum section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136172
This ^^^
It's been said numerous times before though.

No worries. Just take a deep breath and slow down before you post, and if possible sit at a computer where you can type properly. Asking for help with one sentence posts, and not providing enough details isn't going to help anyone. You will inevitably just have to type later anyway when we start asking for the details (plus more back and forth, and more waiting for a response).
I'm not personally much of an AOSP user, so I can't specifically help. But I know timmaa (and others) are more versed in AOSP.
Exactly what error are you getting when attempting to install the ROMs? Are you using the official of modified TWRP?
Sent from my Evita
I am not using modded. The original 2.6.3
It's saying failed...and somethingabout 2.15 I'm not home right now but break at work.
chris
I can try and flash later and let u know
chris
You have to use the modded.
Sent from my Evita
Does it with that too
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
Either way you definitely need to be using the modified TWRP. You'll need to post the exact error you get on an attempted install here.

Ok. Thanks.
