Anyone experiencing screen flashing to full brightness before turning off? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Phone starts to time out, starts to fade to half bright, and before it goes off it flashes to full brightness for a split second. Anyone else experiencing this?

Yes I noticed that too. Not too sure it is because of full brightness or black and white effect.

I'm experiencing this too on Lollipop.

Yes, i have the same issue.

Yep I noticed the same thing yesterday. I made a post about it in the Google Nexus 5 forums but some senior member said that is intended. I highly doubt that because it doesn't seem to have any point. Its kind of annoying when you're in a dark or very dim room you get a brief flash of light.

I don't know much about this stuff but it doesn't seem to be something they'd want to do on purpose, but who knows.
Any updates regarding this matter?

Screen burn!!!!!!!!

Does everyone get the screen burn. Its really bugging me lately. I've had quick look through the forums but can't find much on it. Is there anyway to fix or reduce it with maybe screen frequency tweaks or something.

I have two devices and both have screen burn.. in fact all desire s i have seen burn the status bar.. if screen is on for more than 5 minutes. don't worry about it
Yupp, also having it. Less obvious since I've switched to 25% brightness, but it is temporary, so I'm not bothered much.
happens here also. Try to apply a white image for some time, it helps LCD screens

Ehm... If you need to perform these steps to see this screen burn... Then how much of a problem is it? The subject of this topic suggests that this is a huge problem while in fact it is hardly noticable.
In normal day to day use you will probably never have any problem. I have never noticed the problem with my Desire S
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't get screen burn on an LCD screen (which is what the Desire S has), only plasma screens get screen burn.
Yeah smart guy. Turn on brightness 100% then run i.e. skype and leave it in main menu for some time, then return to home screen and tell me what You see.
Good thing is, that it is only temporary and screen returns to normal fairly quick.

If it doesn't last, it ain't screen burn. It's image retention.
Well... Then Desire S suffers from image retention. Anyone cares?

So...
In this thread it seems a known problem, yet some people don't notice it that much with normal use. I also have this problem, and I play chess a lot where I keep the screen on for quite a while before switching away. I keep seeing the board on the homescreen.
I know it's not permanent, it disappears, and yet, it's quite annoying for me. I have a few questions:
- Does this screenburn/image retention get worse over time?
- Is this an issue which only affects one batch of phones?
- Can this issue be resolved by replacing the screen? ...
- ...and would that be covered by the warranty.

well, i'm sure screenburn/image retention is not covered by warranty, because sooner or later it will happen to the most phones, and i think htc knows that.
And i think it does not get worser over time. i just experienced that image retention was completely gone when i flashed a new rom, with different interface. And when i returned back to my old rom today, i quickly had image retention again. i do absolute not know if this relates to each other but i definetly recognized a difference.
i'm sorry if i did write unclearly, i try my very best
I've just flashed back to sense after being on miui and the screen 'retention' is worse than ever. Don't know if its just cos there is more black on white or some thing to do with sense itself.

just my oppinion but i believe that what we are all experiencing is neither screen burn nor image retention. i actually believe that it is software related. why? well, if u do a thorough test you will notice that if the "burnt" image of the statusbar is observed on solid gray backgrund, the clock changes. i mean, without going to homescreen or whatever, if grey image is displayed and the burnt statusbar is visible, the minutes change as they pass. at the top of my head i actually believe that it's a transparency glitch. or maybe that's only true in my case..

Had my Desire S for 9 months before I sold it for an XE, and I had the same problem with the phone. What I found out was the splash screen of XDAforums is the best to see if you have screen burn or not. My phone's issue was worst on top of the screen, where the notification var is, whenever I ran xda forum I could see clock, antena and WiFi visible on the starting picture of it.
I also noticed that this issue gets worse by time, and the day I sold my Desire S it was in the worst situation ever. I could even burn the keyboard on my screen after like 5 minutes of chatting on Gtalk.
What I think is, Desire S LCD panel has this defect and this could happen to anyone sooner or later; however, for those who use their phones more intensively it appears sooner.
I suggest getting your phones to a service care center and ask for a LCD replacement, because it'll get worse soon.

A couple CM10 related questions

Hi all. Currently running the 10.25 nightly, and I have noticed a couple strange bugs. I would have posted in the big CM10 question thread, but it seems sort of dead at this point.
First, when I turn the screen on when the phone is locked, it starts off dim for a couple seconds and then goes to the correct brightness. Not a huge problem, but definitely annoying.
Second, when scrolling through tabs or windows, and sometimes swiping up and down, I see flashses on the screen of what looks like code or the matrix or something. This is especially pronounced when using Handcent, where whenever I push a key I see the keyboard flash on the screen above the normal keyboard, making scrolling through messages and the message list quite annoying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you using auto brightness?
And, is the second thing you are talking about screen tearing?
Are you using a custom kernel or stock

I'm mostly a Sense guy. But the AOSP base ROMs I've tried all do this. When you turn the screen on, it kinda "fades in" instead of turning on right away to the set brightness (this is with auto brightness turned off). Seems completely intentional, and I personally couldn't find a way to turn it off (as I don't like it either).

Yes I am using auto brightness. I'm using the custom kernel that comes with CM10. It's sort of like screen tearing, but it's more of a flicker in the background and is not always noticeable. Much more obvious in Handcent, though that might be a separate issue since it's the keyboard flashing in the background.

Vibrate causing screen to auto rotate

I've noticed a few times when my phone vibrates and its pretty much flat the screen sometimes rotates. Not sure if this is a normal thing happening with most phones, I'm assuming the vibrate motor is confusing the accelerometer somewhat.
You can see a video of it happening below. The phone is flat against the table. Vibrate is set at 63 which I believe is close to stock. It happens on 50 too.
youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iuo7zsbCj8&feature=youtu.be
Could someone else try this? The app is free. Just switch to auto and set it to something like 0.999 and repeat. Obviously make sure auto rotate is enabled
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anthonyquarella.vibratetester
I've always found the auto rotate on android a bit over sensitive, just trying to figure out if this might be a fault with mine.
Its done it to me before when my phone was laying on my bed charging

Yes, I used the test your android app and vibrate on short bursts. I think camera lens is tilting the phone. It was on a flat desk.

Yeah when it vibrated while laying flat the screen would auto rotate in no particular direction.

Old thread, but it happens to me when I'm playing some games. Vibrates and the screen flicks upside down, then back to proper orientation. I'm holding it in my hands and it's not totally flat either, so it's really getting thrown out of whack for a moment, then re-orients. Doesn't happen in every game, doesn't happen for every vibration, but it happens enough to be annoying.

Pixel 3 screen flash

Didn't see this posted here yet, but forgive me if I missed it.
Trying to find out if anyone has seen or heard of any acknowledgement from Google regarding this. My new Pixel 3 (Verizon; non XL) since day 1 has had an annoying issue with the screen flashing when ambient screen engages. I have my settings with alwayson set to off, and new notifications set to on. If the screen is asleep and I get a text or any notification, the ambient screen wakes and will initially make the entire screen flash white very quickly.
I do not get a flash of the screen in any other scenario when the phones on, it only seems to be when the screens totally asleep and the ambient screen wakes. I can unlock the phone or hit the power button to fully wake the phone to my home screen with no flashing. Its not every single time, but its very often. I do notice sometimes when it doesn't flash the whole screen, the time or text on the ambient display will be at full brightness when it first wakes for a split second and then will go to the dim text Im used to seeing.
Replaced the phone through Verizon. Got another brand new one with the same exact problem. This one even flashes on reboot occasionally just before the white "Google" screen pops up. Google had me send them a bug report this time and are supposed to be having their dev team look at it.
WHY.
Mine did it once
Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
I've also now noticed mine will flash in Instagram when I "like" something lol. Just the picture flashes within the app itself in that case, not the whole screen. Such a weird thing, that may have something to do with the app on the new pixel? I don't even know anymore.
I just saw the white flash. It was only for a few ms but it looked like a full brightness white flash on the whole screen. I had just set my phone down and I think the AOD was coming on.
Weird.
Yeah I have a feeling this is happening on way more devices than we're reading about. I hope it's addressed. Sometimes my notification audio cuts out real quick too. Hoping it's just all memory related.
I have this weird kind of screen flickering on my device as soon as I use the fingerprint area to turn the phone on. It is very faint and fast but its like static lines for half a second when the screen comes on??

Strange, I haven't had any issues like that using the fingerprint reader or just hitting the power button. Mine are all directly related to ambient screen waking.
My Pixel 3 is doing the same thing when I unlock it. Flashes like taking a selfie... I have even looked for the selfie to no avail.
It does not do this regularly, very random.

Report it to Google. I feel like it's something they're aware of (I hope) but support certainly isn't saying so if they are.
I saw a post on Android Police about bug trackers and read in some of the comments that people were having problem with screen flashing. Some of them said it was related to the always on display. Mine was flashing like white static lines. But it was only for half a second when you turn on the screen and it didnt happen every time, it was random. I turned off the AOD and it never happened again. Kinda sucks cause I like AOD. But that tells me it is a software problems and not hardware.
I turned off AOD too, for 1 day; the next day I turned AOD back on. I have not had a screen flash since (a few days now).

Try rebooting. I bet it's still happening you just may not be noticing. I've had my AOD off for a while and as soon as I turn the new notifications option it comes back. Not every time but still often.
I'm having the same issue, doesn't happen all the time but I can reproduce it usually by unlocking the device, locking it then when ambient display comes on, unlock it and the screen flashes/flickers. I've only managed to do it with ambient screen set to always on.
I've RMA'd this morning so I'll report back when the new phone comes.
I hope you RMA's for other reasons too because it is likely that you will get a phone with the same flickering problem. I think it is a software issue esp since it goes away after we turn off AOD.

I just find it strange that people are having the flicker in different scenarios, like mine is only when ambient is set to always on but other people are having the issue when it's set to double tap etc. Anyway I guess I'll see when the new phone comes.

Quick update. My new phone arrived this morning and I've managed to get the screen to flash once so far where as my old one would do it 8 times out of 10. I feel like this is a poor display hardware problem rather than software.
I believe or rather am hoping that because it only happens when you turn on AOD that it is a software issue and not a hardware one. The only way something will be done is enough people complain on a bug tracker.

Smooth display colour issues?

So I notice something funky today
I'm on Nov sec patch
Dark theme on
If I open the dialler the themes is grey
However if I bring brightness to <50%
Lock my screen then unlock it the theme / colour goes almost purple?
I tried taking screenshots but the result is the same grey colour
Anyone else experiencing this?
Yes, it's the way the screen works at the moment. Its why the 90htz was only used at higher brightness levels, but they tried to please the people complaining about it (Nov patch) and here we are.
So yes it's "normal" behavior for now.

Take off force 90hz just leave smooth display on
No aod, or motion sense and no adaptive brightness or ambient eq
Put the brightness down in a dark room, open the dialler, lock the screen the unlock it
I just tried it on 3 pixel 4xls and all had the same thing
You can see the color change back when you put the brightness back up
Sometimes it doesn't stick but changes back pretty quick
At times it gets stuck purple ish

It's probably not going to be fixed until next month by the earliest. So either you have to put up with it or return it and get a different device. Sounds like returning it will be your best route cuase it seems to bothering you to the point where it's starting to cause stress/distress in your life and nothing is worth that honestly.

Good luck! I'm tired of the exchange game for oleds, it's very tiring. Did it with the Pixel 2 and now the galaxy tab 6 and did it once for this device for the purple hue and I just want to stop now. All the back and forth with Google support just saps the life right out of my body. Then having to pack everything up and set it all up put another screen protector. I still have a tab s6 with uniformity issues that doesn't show up in normal usage so I just gave up lol.. Years ago I would of kept going until I got perfection/near perfection with the chance of possibly having Amazon blacklist my account from all the returns/exchanges.
