[Q] What is a ROM

I am fairly new to android. I have been seeing different words that sort of confused me. Like for example, ROM, could anyone explain what this is? Also, what is rooting?
Thank you?

ROM: Read Only Memory, a program used to make changes to anything from the look of the home screen, to icons to custom boot animation
Getting root or rooting your phone is the process of modifying the operating system on your device to grant you complete control over it.
This means you can overcome limitations that the carriers and manufacturers put on your phone, extend system functionality, and even upgrade it to a custom flavor (ROM) of Android
a rom is basically the operating system, instead of being installed like windows it is flashed, it can have built in stuff installed depending on who puts it together, the kernal is what makes it al work with your phone like drivers and all that, rooting is giving you super user access, aka admin rights. without super user rights u cant get access to core system files, after rooted u get a higher level of access to the system. Certain programs from market require root access like rom manager which allows you to make a nandroid back which is exact back up of everything on phone, and u can also enable sideloading allowing you to install apps straight from your sdcard, instead of just from the market.
So would rooting enable my device to download applications from outside the market?
it depends if bubby included it in the one click check his thread out and it will tell u.
just read up in dev section make sure u know what everything is, and there is also a file to get back to stock as you got phone, but depends on what you wanted just root and side loading still same rom that came with phone? if thats it just do gold card and bubbys 1click root. there are other roms that you could try out aswell but like i said check out dev section first and get familiar a little with whats going on.

[Q] Rooting Wifi Xoom

This my be a stupid question but i'm looking for a straight answer. What does rooting do? and why do i want to!
The other thread is a bit confusing
May be someone can start a wifi only and stop mixing the to
If you don't know about it then you probably don't need to do it. Rooting allows access into the areas that the normal user doesn't need access to. With root, you can delete any app or file on the xoom which again if you don't know what your doing you can brick your device. You do need root access if you want to load a custom rom. There is a thread that shows how to root with one click.
rooting will allow you to do things not normally allowed. its really up to you. for example if you root you can use an app to take screenshots, etc

[Q] Spoof MAC Address on 5.0 Lollipop?

Does anybody know how to change the MAC address on a VZW M8 running 5.0? Or on a phone running 5.0 in general? I'd appreciate any help you can give me.
I'm trying to change my phone's MAC address so that I can spoof a "Nintendo Zone" hotspot and get some of the freebie-goodies for my 3DS from home using my phone as a hotspot. The process is pretty straight forward (Make a hotspot, name it "attwifi", change the MAC to something Nintendo uses, get goodies.), but I'm having trouble getting the MAC address changed. Most tutorials have you use a terminal emulator with busybox to change it via command, or a hex editor to change the MAC address in a specific file, but I've not had any luck with either approach. Even the apps on the Play Store seem to fail. My guess is that it has something to do with Lollipop likely changing how MAC addresses are stored and used.
I've tried just about everything I could find, and am running out of ideas as well as ways to phrase the question to google to try looking this up myself. If anybody could tell me how to do this, or give me some pointers, that'd be great.
Also, in case it needs to be said: I am rooted, and unlocked with busybox installed. I've got the stock rom still, with TWRP if any of that matters.
Also, also. I realize this is a repost of my question in the HTC M8 VZW forum, and apologize for that. I'd have deleted the previous, but I can't seem to find out how. Either way, I figure this issue probably has less to do the the HTC M8 phone itself, and more so with Lollipop 5.0 as a whole, making this a better forum to ask in. Hope that isn't a problem.
Bump.

I've already tried about a dozen different MAC Spoofers on the Play Store, but none of them actually seem to work. I'm pretty sure something with 5.0 has changed the way MAC addresses are used.

have you tried Chainfire's "Pry-Fi" app on google play?

I recommend not using Pry-Fi by chainfire. After first use on a Nexus 5 running rooted stock ROM v5.1.1, it permanently broke Wi-Fi functions (setting would not turn on). After extensive web research and troubleshooting, I had to reflash the ROM and wipe the device to get it working again.
If you do install Pry-Fi, I warn app users to get a full backup and know how to restore before installing.
Chainfire has done great work in the community, but Pry-Fi app is no longer great.

[Q] Running root applications without root

Hello.
I have a question about running apps that need root and not having a rooted phone. I can't root my phone because it's my work phone. They pay the bill and I don't want to mess around(yet).
First, is there a way/trick/app that can run rooted apps on a non rooted phone? I am just going to assume no since I've found nothing.
If not, does there exist some kind of application, that can create some kind of "virtual machine" where that sandbox environment has root access? Like an app used to launch other apps under a virtual root environment. Just think of VMWare Workstation/Virtualbox. You might not have admin rights on your own computer, but you can create a VM and have full admin rights on that.
Anyway if anyone knows anything or has any info I would appreciate it, thanks

Hi ,
Sadly , there is no app/environment like that for android . I too searched for the same kind of app ( like virtual box in windows ) , but there were no results
So you would better to use a x68 architectured android os , for your PC .

There is no such app which can grant root rights without getting permission of gaining root on your device.
On the other hand its never messy to gain root on your device. Its complications have been reduced as you can use any of the rooting apps available.
Some of the trusted ones are:
Framaroot
Kingroot
Towelroot
Check if your device is supported with these apps .
Then its just a few minutes....
And Everything done!!!
ayushbpl10
Sadly there's nothing like that available for now
Thanks for the replies guys. It's a shame there's nothing like this. Some kind of Android Emulator for Android would be the bees knees!
@ayushbpl10 KingRoot looks very interesting. I need to read a bit more on this "temp root" thing and what it means. But I do like the idea of it being temporary for sure.
Does anyone know if these methods trip KNOX? I am just a bit worried. If I ever left the company and had to return the phone, I wouldn't want to have any issues or have to pay for the phone because the Warranty is void.
I can't find a clear answer on KNOX and KingRoot (keep coming up with Kingo Root results..)
Thanks again
Lol

I would like to inform you that if your device is supported by the root apps that I posted it's easy to unroot your device too...
I myself use framaroot...
The SuperSU comes handy in such cases as it provides a set of features in which one is unrooting your device...
& I have done it twice to claim my warranty & had no issues...
Just check your device is compatible with framaroot..
Rest all done by the app itself...
Just read the instructions how it proceeds....
U will delighted to use it.
Hope you find this useful !!!
ayushbpl10
Which phone do you use and which apps you want to use with root rights?
Then we can look for the right method for your device.
Framaroot can't root Knox devices......

I ended up bringing the note 4 back and getting a nexus 6. Not only did I have it rooted within 5 seconds, but this phone feels waaaaaaaaahaaaahahahahaaaaaaaay faster. Snappy as hell. The note felt sluggish. Especially using the recent apps button.
Anyway problem solved: don't get a note 4 if you are worried about knox

[Completed] Grand Prime SM-G530T1

So is there anyone out there who knows how to reverse engineer closed source android files? Example; Bootloader? I want to remove knox from bootloader and open up the bootloader completely. I want to be able to play pokemon go no matter what kind of block they send out. Current update they block all root users. Not everyone is a cheater which is ridiculous to block us all. But I need to make a custom rom and would love to start by learning how to hack the bootloader and remove Knox completely. This is for lollipop 5.1.1 on the Grand Prime SM-G530T1 if I had my own pc at the time id try to look it up and learn it. Would really appreciate any given help. There is a handful of us who want a working rooted rom for this device and options arent supported so if I can get access to all the source files and make them all open then I can look into making a custom rom that wont be corrupted. Goal here is to use the stock files. Build from stock keep it simple. Remove some thing add others. Make it strictly a rom for playing games with root access hidden. Once I learn how to hack all the files I will start doing it for other phones and help others as well.
