[Q] Spoof MAC Address on 5.0 Lollipop? - General Questions and Answers

Does anybody know how to change the MAC address on a VZW M8 running 5.0? Or on a phone running 5.0 in general? I'd appreciate any help you can give me.
I'm trying to change my phone's MAC address so that I can spoof a "Nintendo Zone" hotspot and get some of the freebie-goodies for my 3DS from home using my phone as a hotspot. The process is pretty straight forward (Make a hotspot, name it "attwifi", change the MAC to something Nintendo uses, get goodies.), but I'm having trouble getting the MAC address changed. Most tutorials have you use a terminal emulator with busybox to change it via command, or a hex editor to change the MAC address in a specific file, but I've not had any luck with either approach. Even the apps on the Play Store seem to fail. My guess is that it has something to do with Lollipop likely changing how MAC addresses are stored and used.
I've tried just about everything I could find, and am running out of ideas as well as ways to phrase the question to google to try looking this up myself. If anybody could tell me how to do this, or give me some pointers, that'd be great.
Also, in case it needs to be said: I am rooted, and unlocked with busybox installed. I've got the stock rom still, with TWRP if any of that matters.
Also, also. I realize this is a repost of my question in the HTC M8 VZW forum, and apologize for that. I'd have deleted the previous, but I can't seem to find out how. Either way, I figure this issue probably has less to do the the HTC M8 phone itself, and more so with Lollipop 5.0 as a whole, making this a better forum to ask in. Hope that isn't a problem.

Bump.

Try using ChamelMac from the google play. Or you can search for MAC Spoofer android ans see what you get.

I've already tried about a dozen different MAC Spoofers on the Play Store, but none of them actually seem to work. I'm pretty sure something with 5.0 has changed the way MAC addresses are used.

I recommend not using Pry-Fi by chainfire. After first use on a Nexus 5 running rooted stock ROM v5.1.1, it permanently broke Wi-Fi functions (setting would not turn on). After extensive web research and troubleshooting, I had to reflash the ROM and wipe the device to get it working again.
If you do install Pry-Fi, I warn app users to get a full backup and know how to restore before installing.
Chainfire has done great work in the community, but Pry-Fi app is no longer great.

[REQ] Wireless Tether Fix

Please HELP!!!!
After hours of searching I'm seeing people mentioning the same problem with wireless tether as I have however they are mentioning it in their custom ROM thread thinking its only specific tho their ROM but it seems to be a universal issue. I understand there are still many with it working great, so let's not try to turn this into a "mines working great" thread and instead diagnose why it's working for some and not others.
Problem: Computers cannot connect, transfer freezes at 0.4kb. This is the same exact problem everyone is having (those who have problems) with Wireless Tether.
Things I've done to try to fix it:
1. Wiped Cache
2. Restored a Nandroid that was working great
3. Flashed the new kernal
4. Reinstalled AVA's Froyo Sense
5. uninstalled and reinstalled Wireless Tether
6. Tried the new beta version of wireless tether
Please help guys, this is vital to my business needs. I can live with the bugs in the ROM and things but this one I really need. You guys are great. Thanks.
Im having the same problem...bump?
I have the same problem..even madea thread nobody seems to help...
Things I have tried to fix
Rerun the simple rootwiped cache, dalvik cache ,flashed other roms..
Reran the simpleroot which downgraded me than rerooted to the toast method...
And flashed custom roms...nothing
Seems like its working but only get 4 kb down and 2 kb up ,
If I scan I don't see my wireless teether
Please help...

Possible workaround
I am not sure if this is going to help but I took a trip this last weekend and thought I would give the tether a try. I think I was having the same problem you guys are seeing. The laptop would connect to the phone just fine but the internet would just simply not work.
After getting pretty pissed I opened the phones web browser while wireless tether was enabled and boom it started working on the laptop and continued to work for a couple of hours.
When I tried it again later the same thing happened I just needed to open the browser on the phone to get it working. Like the phone needed to be forced locally to make an internet connection.
Chris
I'm not sure what the exact prob you guys are having but maybe this could be of help....
The problem is that custom roms "intregrate" our app into their roms. They don't install it but copy it to /system/app or /data/app. By not installing it a shared library is not copied to the right location! It's not the fault of the app!!!
What you could do:
Remove the preinstalled app from /system/app or /data/app and install it manually!
Download: http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre2.apk
OR install mentioned shared-library manually:
1) Extract wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre2.apk (using winzip/winrar).
2) in "lib/armeabi" you will find a file named "libnativetask.so"
3) Copy this file to your device:
adb remount
adb push libnativetask.so /system/lib
Did anybody found a fix for this problem yet?
I hope you find a fix, all I can do is tell you what I do each and everytime I load a new ROM, or a new Wireless Tether APP.
I open the app, click tether... allow it to get superusers premissions.
Hit menu, access control, and ENABLE access control
Hit back, stop tethering, allow super users premissions
Close APP
Restart app, click tether and connect
I had your problem once, and this method with the newest version cured it. Hope you find your fix
I had this problem a few weeks ago. I was able to fix it, but i didn't document how i did it.
This is how I think i fixed it.
1. Use Titanium backup to wipe data, and then uninstall it.
2. Go into recovery mode and wipe cache partition.
3. Reboot
4. Then re-install wireless tether app (i installed the pre-9 from code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list)
I have a feeling I'm forgetting a step, but I hope this works.
I've never been able to get the market version to work. Always thought it was "old" code.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
I am posting this using wireless tether pre9, on fresh's 3.3 with kingx cfs11 kernel.
Oh to install it. First unistall what ever version you're trying. Then do a fresh install of the download.

I was able to fix by uninstalling and then reinstalling pre10. Just an FYI
At the time I had the problem, the uninstall and re-install method didn't work. I tried re-installing a few of the different "pre" versions. Then I finally tried the clear cache between one of my uninstall/reinstall, and then it finally worked. dunno why, but that was the issue i was having...

Rogers Captivate-2.2 updated and found an interesting apk

I was just going through the /system/app directory and found this rather interesting .apk in there, "TetheringManagerRogers1126.apk". Anyone have any idea what Rogers is doing with this? Do you think this is what is causing people with non-tethering enabled accounts (under 1 gig of data) to not be able to use the Mobile AP feature? Would removing it bypass the restriction? Hoping someone with more Android knowledge can shed some light on it.

Does rooting not allow tethering in the Rogers 2.2?
Regarding your first reply, that has now disappeared:
"Root and tether to your hearts content."
I am rooted, how do you think I was looking through the /system/app directory structure.
Regarding your edited reply, rooting does not disable your ability to tether.
The point of my post was more towards the people that now cannot tether after upgrading to 2.2, there are numerous complaints about it. Mostly from Fido users by the looks of it. The option is disabled for them, if they try to enable Mobile AP it says something about contacting Rogers. I was thinking that possibly this file is the reason, and if they were to remove it, maybe they could enable Mobile AP again.
Tethering does not work for me, when it used on iOS. I never tried on Android 2.1, as I used mobile AP a few times instead. Maybe I just need to set it up again with Rogers since I just renewed my contact...
Mobile AP still works, but just one device at a time it seems? Not sure if thats a limitation or a problem. Now to get VPN to work...

Yes.
The message you have entered is too short.
I just found this thread while trying to fix a problem of Mobile AP/USB tethering disconnecting me after about 5 minutes of use. The reason I mention this is that my account should have not have had any tethering restrictions as I'm on the 6gb data plan. Mobile AP worked fine under 2.1, but as mentioned, after about 5 minutes of use on 2.2, both Mobile AP, and tethering would just shut off. I was able to tether fine using Kies though. Removed this file, and now have been connected for over an hour on Mobile AP Thanks!

Lol just use TiBu to get rid of "Tethering Manager"in the apps list.
@OP: yes, it does what you thought. But you already found that out.
Alternatively,
1. Root your phone
2. Download "Root Explorer"
3. Rename or Delete the file
4. Reset your phone

I'm wondering if we cant just remove the "Tetherguard" app from the phone via Titanium. I'm not sure if this is what prevents us from tethering, or the app that phones home... but we might have some luck.
Other than that, can we use other apps that will bypass this?

Unfortunately that didnt work, I just tried.
I uninstalled teatherguard via Ti B/u tried to run my tether app, no luck. Tried to run the factory installed hotspot software and instead of getting denied it just wouldnt turn on. If I went into settings I could make changes and try to turn it on however it would just act as if it was loading and eventually do nothing.
At that time I went ahead and installed barnacle and no luck there either, again it wouldnt deny but it wouldnt boot up either.
Hmmmm
Okay so after playing with the app "WiFi Tether for Root Users, Muller, Lemons, Buxton" I finally got it to work. You will need the app downloaded and installed, go to settings, select profile and select "generic ICS" should be the 3rd option, then hit the menu bar again to select re install binary files.
After that turn on the hot spot and connect with your device!
Actually I'm using the HTC app for tethering!! I did this that a saw on a Vivid ROM thread, I think it was on Dark Raider's..... so I don' deserve any credit, I just want to help because I got my One X yesterday, rooted it and tried it and it works perfectly!!
You'll need SQ Lite Editor:
1) Dialer Storage
2) telephony.db
3) carriers
4) 12 Entitlement 310410
you shoud change the value under "apn" from "broadband" to "pta"
5) Please restart your device and you will get it!!
Enjoy my friends!!!
Thank you for that fix!!!!
I search hih and low for the entitlement check in all the databases. I would have never thought to look in telephony.

It's not for the timid.
find the telephony.db in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases copy it to /mnt/sdcard
edit it with the sqlite manager of your choice. I used the firefox extension.
Find line 12 and change it from broadband to pta.
copy it back to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
reboot phone
You'll need root explorer or similar file manager with root access to get to the file and put it back
After that I just added the widget

You're welcome. I googled the file location that took a while. After that it was cake.
the maker of CWM also made a tethering app, it also claims that it's almost non-detectable by carriers since it does it with proxies and works with non-root https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether
just another option. If you use ssdroid, this is another tethering method that does it with proxies and also is nondetectable that i am experimenting with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25818971

pretty sure you should use a root file explorer to remove it from system/apps because you have to remove the odex as well as the apk. not saying it will work but it might. since you already removed the apk with titanium you should use a root file explorer and remove the odex file that's probably still there and see if it fixes it. im trying it now and will report back.

Disable ability of installing/removing apps on android smartphone

Is there an elegant way to disable the ability of a smartphone user to install and uninstall applications?
We have the following situation. Our company purchased smartphones for employees so that they communicate with customers on corporate phones, rather than by personal ones. All they need is a telephone connection, the Viber and corporate mail. As a system administrator, I want to configure the devices for these sevices only. If I make a rooting of the smartphones, can I make some changes that disable ability to install and uninstall apps from files and Google Play? And will I be able to easily turn this ability back on in the future to install some application for user?
Smartphone's model Lenovo A Plus, Android version 5.1.
One way would be to remove package installer app from system partition. I am not sure though, just give it a try

I began to get acquainted with the process of obtaining root-access, and was surprised when I found out that there are no standard unix files "passwd" and "master.passwd" in the android. This means that I can not set a password for root-access, and the user will be free to use root-access. How to solve this problem? Maybe I need a custom firmware or a special app? But which one exactly?

Supersu or magisk, they get automatically installed when you flash their zip file from custom recovery to root the phone. But not all phones have custom recovery or firmware. Mostly it depends on popularity of device, if your phone is popular many developers would be working on it.

Problem with WIFI authentication: no redirected login page

Hi everyone!
I have formatted the cell phone a few days ago, and resetted it to factory settings.
Going to the gym, which has free wifi, I tried to connect as usual, but I am no longer redirected to web page where you have to login (typing the provided password).
I tried to delete the gym related networks, to use another browser (Firefox), to clean the cache by Wipe...
ZERO results.
Any saviors to help me, and to make my Christmas time happier?
Thanks in advance.

The gym (and all others) will keep a record of your MAC address. To get the renewal page you will need to change your MAC address, followed by a reboot. Then it will appear.
Thank you for your reply.
How do I change my MAC address?
You will need a ROOTed device. It looks like there are no MAC spoofers that work any more without root. If you have root, you are in fine shape- download MacChanger app, run it. Reboot may be required.
