I currently have 3 lines with VZW. My first line is my grandfathered unlimited data plan that I've bought full retail phones for over the past several years, and currently have a Note 3. The second line is my wife's 6gb/mo $30 plan. We share Unlimited Text/MMS and a 700 min per month voice package. Recently, I added a third line for my daughter, bought her an S5, and she was supposed to also share the 700 min and my wife's 6gb a month. I got an alert that my daughter was at 75% of her usage after only a week, so I went online to find out a few things:
They didn't share the data but gave her a separate 2gg/mo plan for $30
They told me they can't share data between certain lines, and data can only be shared if all lines on the account are sharing
My bill is now $270 per month
I am seriously considering ditching Verizon since $270 is absurdly high. What would you all suggest? I figured that everyone here is probably similarly familiar with what I'm going through and might be able to offer some kind of advice or recommendations.
Thanks in advance,
Jesse
Yeah, $270 is extremely high. I guess the biggest factor is the amount of data to get.
You probably need to consider things like whether you need unlimited data or not, and try to figure out how data you and your family members need. If you are looking to get as much data as you can for the money, the best value is T-Mobile. The family does not share the data, but each get a pool of data for themselves and unlimited talk and text are included. So for a family of 3 like yours, you can EACH get 5gb of data for $150/month + fees/taxes. Heck, even unlimited data for all of you guys would only cost $180/month+fees/taxes. You can keep your phones and just bring them to T-Mobile, assuming they are all 4G LTE capable. You can pick and choose the plans on their website: http://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/family.html
Also, if you live in a city or metro area, T-Mobile has very decent coverage.
Hope this helped. Good luck!
Was in the same situation had my grandfathered unlimited with Verizon. I pushed the HTC rezound as far as I could, but couldn't justify having 5 different phone plans with data as I have my wife and I plus the in laws on our plan. I ended up sacrificing my unlimited for a family share plan. With the specials they were running I went with edge with 17 GB shared data plan and my bill runs about $230 and I get new phones again so far I'm happy.

So i've seen a few threads here saying that the new deal with media net unlimited package was 10 dollars a month now. Well i called today to get it and was told that not only was it for my fuze(i did the sim swap trick to make it seem we all had regular phones) but also the other two phones in my family, all three of us now have unlimited data for 10 dollars a month. This seems too good to be true. Did anyone else have a similar experience?

So your saying the Rep said that this applied for your fuze or did it apply to your fuze because it had another sim card?
Are you saying your paying $10 a month for all 3 phones... or $10 a month PER phone ($30).
I think I might jump on this. I have a Fuze and my fiance has her old blackjack. She has unlimited messaging for $20 and I have MediaNet Bundle (Unlimited Data, 200 SMS, Unlimited AT&T Messaging) for $25.
So we spend about $45 a month.
If we could get unlimited Family Messaging for $30, then both unlimited data for $10... that would be $50.
I'd pay $5 more so my fiance can get online.
I assume this is only for Family Plans
I used to do that. I worked at radioshack though, and our rep for ATT told us that he used to be a manager at an ATT store and would add the non-pda data plan to peoples accounts, and some would come back later with giant bills because they were revised and billed per byte.
He said it didn't happen a lot, and a lot of times ATT would be full of mercy and not charge the full amount, but he did tell me it occured.
I say be careful because you would be breaking the terms and conditions and they would have every right to charge you 3 cents/KB
has anyone on this forum been caught?
from my understanding it was 10 dollars total for all three lines(as in a total of 10 a month, not 30). I specifically said to the rep, "no no i don't want the family plan i only want it on the one line" to which he replied that it was a family bundle that i qualified for since i had a family unlimited texting plan. I didn't mention my fuze so i don't know what will happen, perhaps this month will have some ridiculous charges but i'll play ignorance and try to fight them. So we shall see. My online account has not updated yet so i have no way of knowing 100% what is going on but i'm rather curious.
also it's only 1c/KB not 3 for their standard charges.
I've been using the MediaNet plan on my Samsung Blackjack, Samsung Epix, and HTC Fuze for 3+ years.
Their expensive internet plans are stupid. When I bought my Epix... the sales guy said, "Since the Epix is a newer faster phone... it won't work with the Media Net plan because the MediaNet plan doesn't send the data packets fast enough and so it won't work".
I'm a Network Engineer. What kind of crap is that?
I popped in my old sim and started checking my email.
Unlimited Data = Unlimited Data.
Every time I call CS and they get me started on that crap I give them an earful. Plus data plans are outrageous. Why would anyone want to pay for a Data plan which is the same, if not more, then the data plans they have in their homes.
SMS is nothing more then free money for them and people don't use that much data. Unlimited Data and Messaging should be MAX $20.
AT&T over-chargingn for data
I see someone else shares my irritation (exasperation) with AT&T (and the other carriers, since they all charge about the same).
I pay $30.00 a month for DSl (3mb down, 768 up). Why or why should I pay the same for speeds that are less than half that on AT&T's network just because its mobile?
Yes I can check my mail (almost) anywhere but.....thirty bucks is ludicrous, I cancelled my data plan on my Kaiser and my wifes Blackberry because it wasn't worth the service. We were paying over $60.00 a month for unlimited data on two phones. (Everyone kick me me becaause I deserve it).
Now you are telling me you are getting it on two phone on the "family plan" for $10.00 a month ?
WoW !

Let me clear this up, I might be new to this forum but I am very familiar with AT&T rates and plans. Lets just say I use this information almost daily.
THIS APPLIES FOR STANDARD MOBILE DEVICES (NOT PDA/BLACKBERRY/iPHONE)
For Individual Lines (AT&T Nation)
-Data Unlimited (formerly known as 'MediaNet Unlimited')
cost $15 per phone.
-Unlimited Messaging (SMS+MMS+IM)
cost $20 per phone.
-Messaging & Data Unlimited (Data+SMS+MMS+IM)
costs $30 (save $5 from getting the two seperately)
For Family Plans (AT&T Family Share)
-Data Unlimited
cost $10 per line in the family plan (instead of $15 for individuals)
-Family Messaging Unlimited
cost $30 (one price covers every line on the plan)
THE FOLLOWING IS FOR PDA/BLACKBERRIES
For Individual Lines (AT&T Nation)
-PDA Personal or Blackberry Basic
cost $30 per phone.
-Unlimited Messaging (SMS+MMS+IM)
cost $20 per phone.
-PDA/BBRY Messaging Bundle
costs $50
For Family Plans (AT&T Family Share)
-PDA Personal / Blackberry Data
cost $30 per line
-Family Messaging Unlimited
cost $30 (one price covers every line on the plan)
During the sign-up process, the IMEI number of your device will be registered to your account. If the system detects the IMEI of a device that falls under the PDA or BLACKBERRY category, the Data Plans populate itself only to 'PDA Personal $30' or 'BBRY BIS Personal $30'. If an IMEI of a regular phone was entered, it will populate the options for 'Data Unlimited' for $15
When you purchase your PDA device like a Blackjack II, if you somehow manage to have an IMEI of a normal phone be entered instead of the Blackjack II, you will be billed the rates according to whatever type of phone that was entered. (This will not work with Blackberries because BBRY needs the BIS data and the PIN number to be registered.)
Also what might be possible is; get your devices and plans normally, like a Fuze with a $30 PDA Data plan, a month later, call customer service and tell them that youre switching to a different device that you bought yourself, and give them the new IMEI (imei should be from a non pda/bbry device), and have them change the data plan prices accordingly. Voila, you saved $15 dollars per month per phone.
Oh and if some of you were wondering, the carriers data service is just data, meaning it wont know the difference between data from a Sony Ericsson W350 to an HTC Fuze, or a Touch Pro, or a Touch Diamond, or Xperia, or Nokia N96, or iPhone knock-offs, etc. you get my point.

not to sure about this..i have a family plan and i did this trick way back in the day with my 8525 (was $20 at the time for medianet and i had to do it again when the price dropped while using my tilt) and unless theve dropped the price recently for family plan data rates then this is incorrect and its still $15 (what i pay a month with a fam plan)
oh and has anyone ELSE besiodes the OP confirmed this $10 all lines plan?

For me it says $15 a month for regular cell phones and $30 a month for pda's such as the fuze.
How many of you guys are doing the thing were you call up and add a regular phone as your phone and then select the $15 for data and then just switch your sim card into the fuze and still only pay $15 for data instead of $30? What would happen if att finds out?
Thanks.

Yes, I see that too, but if you look closer at the fine print for those top two items, it says they are only available to regular cell phone ie not the fuze.
i've been using this on my 8125 for a few years now i have the media net unlimited with 200 text messages for 20 a month.
i just did this recently for my wife when i added her on to my family plan she wanted a blackjack so i had her get a dumb phone first with the unlimited messaging and the 1500 text messages for 30 a month before the 30 days were up with the dumb phone i had her return it and ordered her a refrub'd blackjack off with the discount through my job
the medianet and the messing plan stuck and i just switched her from the unlimited net and 1500 text to unlimited net and unlimited text for 30 a month
so when and if i upgrade to a fuze any new att phone with a newer htc
just like the network guy said above DATA is DATA
i checked around I didn't see anything online about the unlimited data for 10 bucks a month anybody been able to enable this?

which is why you do the trick mentioned earlier and all over this forum so you can get it.
Confirmed in Chicago area!!
The catch is (as someone already mentioned) you have to put ALL THE PHONES from your Family Plan on the $10/mo. Unlim MediaNet Data Plan...and NONE of them can be PDA or iPhones. I'm saving $45/mo !!!
T-mobile just announced few of their new 4G prepaid plan today. You can get unlimited talk / text with 2GB of high speed data for $60 without signing any contract.
This plan is better than simple mobile $60 plan since simple mobile is only good for 1GB of data.

Huh? 1GB? I have been with SM for more than 2 yrs and I reach 2gb or more every month with no cap.
Sent from my Calculator with Android.
It's about a month old, I switched from flex pay to this earlier this month. I was a bit irritated when I found this out. I had to log out of my account to find it because if you are logged in it wont let you see it. So I instantly cancelled my flex pay account because I was paying more for less....
if you dont talk much like me go for the $30 100 min unl text and data up to 5gb
I don't care for data caps myself.
well unless you have a grandfathered plan you have a cap nowdays...except for sprint and their joke of a 4g network
F'ing T-Mobile, when I signed up for it, it said there was no limit on the $70/month plan. Now all the sudden there is. I was wondering at first what $60 plan he was talking about, because when I set mine up there were two options, $50/month for unlimited talk and text, and 2gb data 4g, and the other was $70 unlimited everything. Now there's a bunch of different things and caps on everything.. I feel scammed.
that is why there is no contract , they can change anytime they want.. if you want fix price go w/ contract where they can't increase the prices for your usage.
Before everyone flips out on me... give me a second. So I told my dad he was going to lose his unlimited data if he didn't upgrade his phone by today. Which of course he ends up waiting until today to do. Come to find out that he had to upgrade before today in order to keep his unlimited data. We are on a family share plan and only me and my dad have unlimited data, but my brother and sister, who are also on it, have the 2GB data cap.
So I told him to try to transfer his upgrade to one of them and get the subsidized price and just upgrade it on his line. So he tries to pre-order the SGSIII on my brother's line and this pops up.
"The existing plan Nationwide Account Level Talk & Text Family Share 2000, is not compatible with the new device." So it either chooses new individual plan or new share voice and data plan.
What's confusing though is that under smartphone data packages, it doesn't have the new family data plan pricing. It still has 2 GB for $30, 5GB for $50, and 10GB for $80 and under plan shares summary on the left side where the totals are, it does say "Nationwide Account Level Talk & Text Family Share 2000". So I'm confused as F*CK right now and I want my dad to keep his unlimited for at least another 2 years, but I also don't want to lose mine and get screwed over with this new family data share plan. Not to mention that fact that I'm not sure whether they are actually forcing us into this new data share plan or not.
Thoughts? Can anyone who has a family plan with an upgrade vouch?
If I may interject, this is why I'm on Straight Talk AT&T. I can't deal with confusing carrier pricing schemes. I know it doesn't help your situation, but thought it would be worth mentioning. Same service, lower price, none of the confusion. Anyways, I hope you get your answer bud.
I signed up with verizon two years ago with HTC thunderbolt with a 4G Unlimited data plan. After that I have been just buying secondhand phones. Now I am up for an upgrade, but I know if you upgrade through verizon they will strip you of your unlimited plan. But I also heard that they are doing this to customers who have 3G smartphones, in order to get everyone to 4G. But if you have been grandfathered into a 4G unlimited plan, can you upgrade and still keep your unlimited plan.
I am not able to get a correct answer from anyone. Has anyone recently, who has 4G unlimited plan been able to upgrade and keep their plan.
Thank you in advance.

As of right now, Verizon is making everyone go to a share everything or tiered data plan. Those of us who are grandfathered in will have to switch to one those plans. But here's the kicker. This is only if we want to take advantage of subsidized phone options. For those of us who want to continue to have unlimited data will have to pay for our phones outright. So either we can enjoy phones at a cheaper pace (at least until VZW gets rid of subsidized phone options) or we can pay the 4-700 dollars for a new phone and keep our unlimited plan.
I'm keeping my plan on principle.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
looks like no upgrading for me , just keep buying second hand phones.
I upgraded from an Incredible2 3g phone to the GN2 keeping my unlimited data by adding the new phone to one of my 2 "dumb phone" lines, then moved the GN2 to my line. The Verizon store Rep offered to do this for me knowing that it is a loophole to keep your unlimited data. I'm sure eventually that loophole will be closed, by I can speak from personal experience that it works. Several others have done the same thing. Hope this helps.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
I upgraded and kept my unlimited data as well, there's three lines on my account and as long as I always transfer the upgrade to the line that doesn't have data, then after the upgrade switching phones with that line I still keep my unlimited. So in summary as long as you have a line without data in your account you can keep unlimited by doing an alternative upgrade.
Pro-tip:
Ask for an "A-List" device at the Verizon store. A-list devices are devices returned within the first 14 days they allow exchange. Mine was from someone who could not handle the power of Android and had to dumb it down to iOS, saved me a couple hundred bucks to let them borrow it and I still got a warranty
I payed $640 out the door (Accessories+Tax) months ago for my S3. 16GB White, Car Charger, Screen Protector 3pk, UAG case, new SIM (Do not pay for sim or activation corporate stores do it free, private will too if you mention this).
Still truckin' with my VZW GNex, but it is certainly pretty long in the tooth. Assuming that there is no way (esp since Nexus 5 lacks Band 13) to shoehorn Nexus 5 into working with VZW, is this enough of a reason to switch carriers and lose unlimited data? I'm very torn. I actually don't use a ton ton of data, but it's really nice when I travel or am in a place that requires you pay for their hotspot.

I dropped Verizon with a grandfathered unlimited plan when the Nexus 4 came out. First went to Solavei and got their $50 bucks a month for unlimited everything, then realized I could go even cheaper with T-Mobile's $30 for unlimited data (up to 5gb before throttling), unlimited text and 100 minutes calling. I have never regretted it and will never go to a monthly contract plan again as long as I can pre-paid so cheap (and no taxes on top of it...). Well worth it. I pay less than 1/3 of what I was paying Verizon and get enough of everything I need.

I've had Verizon as well forever with unlimited data. I've actually wanted to leave for some time now but haven't had any phone come out that I wanted to leave for. Verizon's prices are just ridiculous for what it offers. With people being off contract on Verizon or them offering their upgrade, their plans don't get cheaper as they should. You're getting a subsidized phone, so you're paying for the phone in your plan. But if the phone is paid off or an additional fee on top of the plan then it's completely pointless for it to be so high.
I'm quite excited to be saving quite a lot every month by switching to T-mobile. My bill is going to be getting cut almost in half for three lines. On top of that, the few times I leave the country I won't need to worry about getting $50 of data in 30 seconds as through Verizon.
Also, the Unlimited Data everyone loves on Verizon is quite pointless, unless you use tethering from your device every day as a primary internet source.
So really it's going to be different for everyone, but for myself everywhere that I go on a regular basis has same T-mobile coverage as Verizon. So for me it was a no brainer. Another bonus is if you work for any larger corporation you can get company discounts as well, and T-mobile handles theirs much better. I currently have a 20% off on my Verizon plan but it only applies to the main account # and not the rest. So it ends up saving like $6/month. Whereas the T-mobile ones are off the entire plan minus taxes and fees.
I left Verizon for an N4 so I surely would leave for an N5!
Aio wireless, $55 for 2GB unlimited text and talk and if you use more data then that they have a 7GB plan for $70. Both prices include tax and fee's already! They use AT&T's network so depending where you live, in most places you will be good to go!
In my opinion, grandfathered unlimited data is not worth being stuck on an overpriced, non-customer centered carrier like Verizon. They will never change their ways unless people stop letting them get away with their completely unfriendly policies and leave them. I recommend going the pre-paid route. Look at T-Mobile if their network is strong where you are, or AT&T's Go Phone $60 plan. Leave contracts behind! Fight the system!

I ordered the Nexus 5 and I've been with Verizon a long time, have an unlimited data plan too. I'm in NYC Metro and the network speed is poor, mostly between 1-5mbps.
I'm paying $130/mo (unlimited talk and data, 250 test) using around 3g per month. Even at 5g per month, I'd still do far better with a prepaid account. If Verizon was getting the Nexus 5, I' probably would have just stayed with them. I'm planning on getting a T-Mobile $60 2.5gb plan, no contract.
Only you can decide if it is worth switching.

I was amazed to find the $30 unlimited data/txt plan on T-Mobile and just activated it today! I've always been wanting a plan like this because I hardly ever use any minutes but have always been paying for them regardless. I'm getting 22mbps down and 5mbps up where I live on T-Mobile for $30/month I'm counting down the days until I can port my # (gnex contract is up in Dec) and kill Verizon for good!
it really depends on your coverage in your area. In my area AT&T doesn't get service in my house and T-Mobile gets none if I go 30 minutes down the road. So I'm trying out the $60 T-Mobile plan right now to see if I should leave my Moto X at Verizon. So far all good, LTE is comparable to the Verizon speeds I got
