[Q] Got GSIII and reception is terrible

It's easily 50% worse than my last phone (palm pre 3) and I've never had issues at my home with anyone's verizon phone.
I did flash LK1 RPM and Radio from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007414
I'm not sure if that has any bearing on it and am also not sure if it was like that before. I did it all when I was in town.
Is there another radio I can flash and see if it's better? Or does the GSIII just have garbage reception on the outskirts?

I've tried the miui 4.1
stock JB
and the mean jellybean one I posted above.

To be honest when I first flashed any ROM on to my GS3 my reception was terrible. Every ROM that I used was the same, I also tried every radio available.
My only solution was just to go back to stock which I did now this Stock ICS has me at 4-5 bars everywhere I go.
My last CM ROM had me at 0-1 bar in the same places.

Check to see if you have the updated prl version 15154. Do this by going to settings, about phone, status. I think that is an updated list of the towers and that could be your problem. If its not the updated version just shut phone off take out SIM card for 2 min and then just start it up and it should automatically update. I read this somewhere in another post and just figured i'd pass it on. Hope it helps.

Unfortunately I'm already on this PRL
Going to try some ICS roms I guess.

I have tried each radio as they have come out with mixed reviews. Some are better than others for me but YMMV. I have found the latest VRLK1 is what works best for me. I came from the Thunderbolt, and I really miss the reception I had with that phone; however, that is the ONLY thing I miss about it. I am currently running CleanRom v5.0 and VRLK1. I definitely get the best reception, and can maintain 4G at work while the other radios would drop to 3g or 1x. I only hope it continues to improve, but I don't think it will ever be as good as I had with the Thunderbolt. Good Luck.

I tried every radio I agree the newest seemed to work best but still was ridiculous. Barely any service even though I had two bars at times. Not enough for a single call and had to be by a window to get spotty text service.
Traded for a lumia 822. Works perfect.

This is funny. Coming from the nexus this phone has way more signal and better reception. Instant switching from 3g to 4g and to wifi. Ive tried every radio and they all work very well. Tried on my nexus and all were horrible. Just my .02 cents but this phone rocks.

Same here. If my i535 shows even 1 bar it still calls/uses data great.

Two things. One: might need a replacement. Two: uh, all the MIUI builds say there are radio issues. So, yeah....

As others have said try out all of the older radios and use whichever one works best for you. Unfortunately, this phone is not particularly known for having a strong radio (and no software update is ever going to really fix that).
If you are really on a fringe area of service, this might not be the best phone for you. In my experience, Motorola phones have always had the best radios in the industry, and are the most reliable in fringe service areas.

JB update and signal strength

Has anyone noticed and signal strength increase with the JB update?

I was still using an ICS modem, just updated to the newes JBt and saw a - 5 to 8 db. I'll take it. Just my experience. Your mileage may vary.

You really need to let a phone settle for a while. I changed a modem and ran several netwrok benchmarks before and after. Immediately followng the update, my data speed was horrible. 30 minutes later it was great.. back to where it was previously. These were all take at the same place sitting on my desk at work.

Trying to figure out poor signal strength issue

Hey guys!
Since I got my Nexus 5 a week ago, I'm experiencing a very poor performance of the signal reception at my office. At the same spot, Nexus' signal is around -103 dBm whereas a Neo or Arc S is around -93 dBm. Translated to bars, Nexus has 2 bars using EDGE and the others have 3-4 using HSPA.
I've tried to disable 4G, even for testing purposes I disabled 3G, but the signal strength is the same. I have read that many people have issues with the signal, either this same issue or other, and I got two Nexus with the same behavior, so I don't think it's due to defective devices.
I have noticed that the wifi drops some times and that the Nexus makes more noise on the speakers of my computer. Hence, I think it's a problem of some sort of interference produced by the Nexus.
Checking the testing menu (*#*#4636#*#*), on "Select radio band" at the "Phone information" field I only see "USA Band". I live in Spain, do you think this may be the source of the problem? If it is, how can I fix it?
The version 4.4.2 neither improve nor worsen the signal strength.

The people who reverted back were those that weren't able to connect using LTE in the new radio but they could on 4.4. However, that's not my problem.

You have a problem with low signal strength. The .23 radio seems worse in that regard so get the .15 or .17 radio and test to see if it's better.

As I said, regardless of the version I'm using, the signal is the same. It doesn't change its strength, neither for good nor for bad.

Where are the radio's posted that I can load via adb? Also, what is the file name for the radio that was on 4.4 after the day one update but before 4.4.1?

Read there and use either the ZIP file for recovery or IMG for ADB.

radios can only be used the ones provided by Google? ROM developers can write their own? Because both Google's radios work equal in my case.

Nexus 5 Radio problem, not picking signal at random time.

Hey,
Sometimes my Nexus shows there is no cell/range coverage in your area but when I search for network and register on my network, cell/signal come back to full, this happens randomly most likely in night, it's getting on my nerves. I'm running on Kitkat 4.4.2 stock rom and kernal and I've had no problems in 4.4.
Anybody else get this problem ? or any ideas to get rid of this other than flash to Kitkat 4.4.
I'm from India and using Vodafone network.

I'm noticing the same here in Italy... seems to happen only when under 2G

Same here in Costa Rica. The connection is pretty stable, but sometimes I suddenly lose it and comes back after a few seconds.
Don't remember seeing the signal changing to 2G. I'll pay more attention to it and report.

seems to be software related. cm 11 seams to fiy it, but i never tried myself. same here in germany. d821, cataclysm 4.2.2, modem .15 and t-mobile. i tried each modem but the (old) .15 one give me the best results.
btw with cataclysm and bricked kernel with undervolting i have 6-7 hours screen on time. i dont think the battery is not good enough...

It should come out of the box stock with that battery without roms or kernels.

Idk why ppl complain about the nexus battery so much maybe they need to put their phone away for two seconds so they could save some battery

That's how mine is with this issue. I only have signal now at home and random parts throughout town. At my job, which is just about 5 miles away, I went from having full bars H+ (T-Mobile) to having no data at all. I swapped my SIM into my co-workers phone, I get signal just as I did with all my previous phones. I used to have great signal at work until the issue arose. I ordered a Note 3 to not have to deal with this anymore. It was great while it lasted.

In all seriousness, have you tried different radios? I mean, like flashing the radio.img from the 4.4, 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 releases? Apparently the 4.4.1 radio wasn't as good as the original so I've stuck with the KRT16 radio the whole time while I'm on Omni 4.4.2.

I flashed every radio in the modem thread, flashed back to stock and installed the OTA updates, and I still have no data except for home and random places while driving.

Same problem here in Austria. Running my N5 with Purity (KitKat 4.4.1) on elementalX kernel.
Too bad. Otherwise, the phone is great.

Well i get full bars coverage at home and everywhere i go in the south of the Netherlands. I thought the N5 radio is much better than the ones of the N4 which we`re weaker for me. Stock and not rooted.

The radio quality of my N5 actually IS very good. It is just sometimes for a few seconds, that there i no signal at all. After 10 seconds, there is full radio again.

Is it so hard to understand? 99,9 % of the time, I have better radio reception with the N5 than with all my previous devices. But sometimes, about twice a day, there is no radio reception at all for some seconds, which is annoying and I hope to find a solution for that, as I am pretty sure that it is software related. I hope this was understandable now.

GPS signal / lock

I own the Nexus 5 for almost one year now.. Gps always worked flawlessly. Last week I started to have gps issues.. I was on the road signal was OK for 15min and suddenly it dropped. Since then I've tried everything:
Agps download
Several gps apps
Full Wipe
New gps.conf settings
Nexus 5 gps antena fix.
Nothing work. Today I was making a comparison with my wife's galaxy s3 and I noticed something weird. The orientation of North is different. I don't know if this has something to do with the GPS lock.
Also, I can get a lock from (usually) half of the visible satellites. When my wife's galaxy s3 can get a lock from 98% of visible satellites. My error margin is always to big for navigation 14-40meters.
Can someone help me?

I'm rooted and using linaro kernel..

My orientation on my GPS is a little off. Not sure if you can calibrate it but the location in general is normally perfect.

I am suddenly having the same issue anyone else have a fix?

I will most likely to RMA my device, since I've tried everything...
It does not seem to be an hardware failure, because I can lock like 7 or 8 of 22 satellites...
I've tryed diferent rom, diferent kernel, diferent radio... Antena fix, nothing works.

You need to go back and install the Radio from 4.4.2, it seems the Radio that came with 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 cause lots of GPS Signal loses. Installed the Radio yesterday and cleared cache and Dalvik-cache and my trip to work this morning had no signal lose. Hope it continues to work as my last vacation the GPS was pretty much unusable and I was ready to do an RMA. But if it is software hopefully google will fix. Please "Star" the Google issue so it gets more priority if using older radio fixes your issue.

I extracted it from the Nexus 4.4.2 Factory image and flashed the radio using Fastboot:

It worked for me in my testing yesterday. Did you also clear your Dalvik Cache? I did both at the same time and since then GPS worked for me.

Not for me
I tried flashing the radio yesterday and it didn't seem to resolve me issue. So I used the LG tool to go back to stock, and GPS locked last night. But this morning it was the issue. Of course if I reboot the phone, I get an immediate lock. Not sure what's up with that. But I'm going to try a few more things today.

wow! I'm trying that now! that would explain why my GPS started sucking so badly and I couldn't pinpoint what it was...

Yes it worked for me I did a factory reset & unroot just because I was getting ready to send it back. Then I read about the KOT49E radio re rooted & flashed KOT49E & now it works perfectly. I don't know if the reset was necessary, but its nice to clean out the closet every now & then.
I can't believe how frustrating this has been & such a simple fix (if your are rooted that is)

Got my board replaced, and now it works xD
