[Q] T-Mobile Tethering and Lollipop - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For those who've jumped on the flashing the ota bandwagon, I'm hoping you can answer whether the old "tweak the settings.db file with the tether dun required entry trick" still works in lollipop? (Or whether it's no longer needed?) Before, one could go about inserting the "tether dun required=0" into the settings with or without root and therefore allowed tethering on any plan. Hoping that's still the case.

i use tmobile, and i tether. the native app works fine with tethering. just like it did with kitkat, with jellybean, etc. it works fine. nothing special is required. all tmobile plans include tether(excpt prepaid). unlimited tether for all plan besides unlimited high speed data, which includes 3gb.

Perhaps you weren't aware, but Tethering was not and does not work on stock KitKat without it being specifically included in the plan. If you look at the thread I linked you'd see that Google included a specific string in KitKat to allow T-Mo to detect tethering of any type. As well, in that thread you'd see there's a workaround (at least, on KitKat). My question is whether this tether detect and block is still found on the stock Lollipop build and if so, if there's also a workaround.

again, tethering with tmobile worked absolutely fine in katkat. and again, its included in all the newer plans except for prepay. if you are trying to steal their service, thats a whole different story. that i wont talk about here, since theft is illegal.

There is a small tethering allotment in the $30 plan. But it's not always accessible. In any case, you've not answered the question. And if you're not able to, that's fine. Can anyone else with more knowledge offer a hand at confirming things?

lol @ @simms22 not having enough knowledge.

it work fine, I edited the setting.db as soon as I rooted the phone again and everything worked fine again.

Thanks for the answer! So it's the same procedure as before, on KitKat? You still have to change the "Tether Dun Required=1" to "=0"? Again, thanks for the answer!

That's your assumption and accusation, and you're free to throw it around, but please do so elsewhere or through PM. The question was straight forward and I don't believe I'm the only one who's curious, whatever the reason. Let's keep it to the question.

Check your PM's. Consequently I will not be engaging in this specific discussion about theft or whatever it may be any further. It's unproductive and has little to do with the topic and question at hand.

Speaking of PM's, someone was kind enough to confirm what joshyth said. Which is to say as in KitKat, you'll still need to go in change the setting. So if anyone's as curious as I was, there you go! Hope that helps!

I changed the value, set the APN and tried thethering. I downloaded a 150MB file and checked my account. It shows up under tethering data used. I'm on a Rooted Stock OTA, Lollipop 5.0 Note 3. I'll try again on a custom ROM and see if it changes anything. Will report back when I do.

You "Mr. High and Mightys" are hilarious. If you don't have any input that is useful then move along.

There is a reason why mobile carriers, do not provide "Unlimited" Tethering/hotspot
Mobile data consumption is small, while a full pledged PC consumes way more.
Spectrum(Air-Waves) and Bandwidth.. most important for a carrier..

Wireless tether for android [Works perfect]

Hey guys. I just sucsusfully downloaded and tested the wireless tether app for android. I am not talking about the hotspot app that comes stock with the inspire. Im talking about this app (I cant post links untill i make 8 post lol, so copy and paste the url below)
Code:
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I downloaded the 2.0.7 version and it works flawlessly with the stock rooted rom.
Just wanted to share that.

wifi hotspot is application that comes stock on the inspire. It checks your account to see if you are paying for tethering. The other application (which requires rooting) does not require you to have tethering enabled on your account; hence free tethering !

I have no idea what your trying to get at? The wireless tethering is not a "work around" its a separate application that does the same thing as wifi hotspot.

Understood, but as several others have pointed out, the built in hotspot works perfect when rooted, so if one has to root to get this app, then what advantages does it have over the native tethering app to cause someone to want to have to add yet another app?

hmm weird. My hotspot app still checks my account and I have a rooted device. I figured it was because im using the stock rom. So i posted this thread to give others out there information about the wireless tethering app.

Ack! yep read that to fast! ~.~
However on a non rooted phone if you change the AP listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960058 it is not seen as an teathered laptop or other item. I have tested this and talked to ATT about it. unless its software in the system that makes that decision. i dont think its the app that reports back. i think ATT sends a code over their network to the sim to unlock teathering via their network. by changing the ap to what is listed above it looks like the phone is just hitting off of another service that may be needed for it. I guess ill find out when i get my bill for next month but this is what att told me that its just the phone requesting information from a different ap and no additional charges would be applied. *shrugs* hope their right

Yeah I think it has to do with which ROM the user is using when rooted... some say it still prompts, others not. Mine is enabled regardless of rooted or not, because I use a different APN which bypasses the wall.

Does anyone know how to enable tethering on the Inspire. On the LG Thrill I installed anycut and was able to check a box to enable it. Is there something similar for the Inspire?

please search as this is an ongoing topic and debate within these forums. In short, yes many of the ROMs on here allow for tethering but I will go no further as tethering without the tethering plan is technically against the contract you signed and I will not engage or help further this debate in another thread.

Hey, I have an Inspire that I use as a media phone. I never signed a contract with it, and it doesn't have service. I use it to flash roms and play around with the root stuff, and use it for media. Could you go into more detail for me about tethering? Strictly for education purposes.
You can't use it for tethering if you don't have a data plan. Hopefully you are now a bit more educated.

Do you know what tethering is? You need a data plan on the phone so you can use that data connection either by usb, bluetooth, or hotspot to give an internet connection to another device such as your laptop or ipod. So what are you trying to get to work with wifi then? What app? If you have a custom ROM and IF YOU HAD A DATA PLAN ON THE PHONE, you don't need an app. It is built in most ROMs. You only need an app if you are running a stock ATT ROM.

I was under the impression that tethering is just taxing the same as the regular 3G/4G bandwidth.
At least here in EU they do that.

That's true, but here in the US, our carriers like to bend us over for everything that's logical. Text messaging - we pay for that too.
If you don't have a tethering plan in the US, they will move you over to one if you like it or not.
It JUST happened to me. I was on unlimited data, tethered a few times, they sent me a text of warning, then a few months later they moved me to the 5gig tethering plan. Wah wah.
I have been tethering thru adb/proxy for a long time and never had any issues.

Anybody get it to work on the GS5 yet? I really hate having to physically tether and/or paying for something the FCC says should be free.

Not to be too much of a ****, but HLMGTFY (wifi tethering fcc) - first link: <from CNET, but I can't embed links yet>. But anyway, while the rulling dosen't say anything about Sprint, it does show how the wind blows. Although I wasn't trying to be too serious with that statement, that's the genesis of it.
So no one still uses TrevE's WIFI tether, or are there just too few that have root so far?

Well, I know it might not be common, but I did. The stuff in the Play Store mostly seems like a wrapper for the installed tether app.
Here's what I've done so far that is pertenant- obtained my device. installed and removed several free Play Store apps dealing with tethering via wifi, backed up then rooted my phone, changed settings to accept unauth sources for installs, then went to my standby and installed TrevE's wifi tether from apk. Similar to initial issues with the G4 and G3 it craps out, reported error says log generated, but no log available (maybe just a perms issue?). Googled around a bunch and searched around xda-devs with no direct help found. Decided to post on my favorite Android development forum for the first time since the G3 came out.
I haven't tried looking at the TrevE source yet, mainly due to lazyness and my inate hatred of duplicating others' good work. That is the plan for the weak - along with looking at the wifi-LTE aggregation issue - but I mainly wanted to know if others had gotten that far with wifi tethering before I started donating my time hacking together something that might have already been hacked.
Clear as mud?

Sooner or later I'm SURE a flashable will be made (as well as come native in custom ROMS). Just be patient brotha!
I remember hearing about the fcc. As i recall, it applied to plans with data caps. If you have unlimited data, then it wouldn't apply.

FCC and alike are out there to make money for the 1%. Forget them!
As for the Tether, It doens't work with newer phones yet. I haven't seen any updates for a long time. If you can find another program that works it'll be cool. Else, just wait for a Rom with a native tether to be available.

Actually I did get Fabio's WiFi Tether Router working (thx went to musclehead84 for the first suggestion) on mine - somewhat. I still have an issue with it not completely unloading, and have to reboot the phone after I'm done with it, but haven't tried to tweak it yet either. Well worth the $2.5 IMO.
After re-finding TrevE's thread I came to the same conclusion as others - not in active development anymore. Too bad, I'm a real fan of lightweight apps that do what they claim and are free!

Is it just for rooted phones?
Native hotspot fix ftw.

T-Mobile hotspot no throttle trick.(currently not working)

Must have root!
With a root capable file browser locate systen/etc/apns-conf.xml and open it.
Search for T-Mobile US LTE
Add dun to the APN type field and save.
Go to network settings/APN settings and restore network default.
Give it s second to reset and done.
Tested with the stock hotspot app
So does this enable full speed 4G lte tethering speeds instead of being limited to 3G on their One plans? Seems like this hack would work on any t-mobile connected device, no?

Your welcome!
LOL it WAS working for me. I havnt used my hotspot in awhile to notice any changes.
It's been a looong time since I saw the thread somewhere on Reddit but someone had a guide. Basically, you have to modify something in the system that changes how many "hops?" there are. Like I guess if your phone connects, it's identified at 1 hop. Traffic on the network via tethering hops again, so it's 2. That 2 says you're tethering. I think you change the start to 0 so tethering ends up being 1.
It was something along those lines. I know it's so vague that this doesn't help. But hopefully it means something to someone.

I think you are referring to the TTL. Changing the TTL value to 64 (or 65? I forgot) on the device being tethered to, along with adding "dun" to your apn, would give you unlimited tethering on the Select Choice plan. Once I switched to T-mobile One plan this stopped working.
Anyone found any solution to this?
I can tell you what doesn't work for T-Mobile One plan: Changing the TTL no longer works. Modifying the APN can't be done anymore. Setting tether_dun_required to 0 doesn't work either. Anyone else got anything?

Thanks for the helpful suggestion. The hotspot is already on the plan, and even if it wasn't, there's an easy fix for that. And that wasn't even what I was asking. Because that's not even what this thread is about. I'm pretty sure the topic of this thread is to find a way to bypass the hotspot throttle with T-mobile. I guessed that because this thread is called "T-Mobile hotspot no throttle trick.(currently not working)". See the italicized words? Yeah, that should be a clue. Anyway, thanks for your snarky, useless, and totally off-topic reply. You are the reason the world is awful.

All steps followed exactly. I got nothing. Any ideas or anyone else with similar issues?

I used this: "Tethering,fast.t-mobile.com,,,,,,,,,310,260,,dun"
NOT this: "Tethering data,fast.t-mobile.com,,,,,,,,,310,260,,dun"
For whatever reason, when you use the latter, it only shows up as "Tethering" and omits everything from the space onward.

It's just a modification of the APN setting instructions that you can find in a couple threads here.
I have tested different setups using speedtest.net to determine the fastest speeds.
My phone is setup with the the DUN APN as per this link:
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_apn "Tethering data,fast.t-mobile.com,,,,,,,,,310,260,,dun"
settings put global tether_dun_apn "Tethering,fast.t-mobile.com,,,,,,,,,310,260,,dun"
The vpn I am using is AirVPN with the openvpn app
Attached is a screenshot of my phone signal during the tests.
Here are my results with the speeds in Mbps (down/up):
phone 99/30
phone w/ vpn 92/31
-----------------------------------------------------------
hotspot w/ vpn 49/21
hotspot 0.6/28
-----------------------------------------------------------
hotspot w/ ttl master (set to 65) 0.6/27
hotspot w/ ttl master (set to 65) & vpn 50/18
-----------------------------------------------------------
pdanet hotspot 4/3
pdanet hotspot w/ vpn 21/2
Looks like I will be using my VPN and the default hotspot for the fastest speeds from here on out. If anyone else has different speeds and setups, please reply.
