yea thats why i posted. i dont use tethering personally , but to warn others
I was under the impression that tethering is just taxing the same as the regular 3G/4G bandwidth.
At least here in EU they do that.

That's true, but here in the US, our carriers like to bend us over for everything that's logical. Text messaging - we pay for that too.
If you don't have a tethering plan in the US, they will move you over to one if you like it or not.
It JUST happened to me. I was on unlimited data, tethered a few times, they sent me a text of warning, then a few months later they moved me to the 5gig tethering plan. Wah wah.
I have been tethering thru adb/proxy for a long time and never had any issues.

of course they can. the real question is do they really care?! i remember a thread with one person touting something like 50GB of use in a single month...
so they really wont care if I use my phone as a wireless hot spot for temporary usage for like email or playing online with my PSP or something...awesome. Thanks

Sometimes I use over 15GB/mo. just on my phone. They probably don't care. I read that with WiMax they're not even going to have a bandwidth limit, so you can download and tether to your heart's content. I'm definitely looking forward to that.
Lol, I'm pretty sure 50GB was the guy who was considered the lightweight. I'm almost positive I read a guy using over 100GB, and Sprint didn't do anything. That kind of stuff just makes me laugh.

So as we all might be aware of: Verizon has blocked all tethering apps from the Android Market...

I think Verizon has the right to block apps that will allow or aid people in violating their Terms Of service (VZW's TOS for the smart phone data plan says it doesn't cover tethering, if you want to tether you must purchase a tethering plan)
and before anyone starts... there are MANY MANY other threads already discussing tethering without paying for it, "data is data", its right/wrong, etc...
Now, once VZW switches to tiered data plans with caps and overages, then I see no reason for them to disallow these type of apps, and still have that clause in their TOS... because at that point, if you use enough data to go over your tier's limit, you're gonna pay for it anyway...

Their idea of a reasonable cap rates are crazy.... Until they offer a reasonably priced unlimited plan I will continue to use data at the same rate my phone will anyway, just on a larger screen....
I like Verizon, been using them over 10 years, they suck now, they bully their customers around too much anymore just because they are big red... Its a shame they are still the best company out there.

From Android Central:
Update: As several have mentioned, it's quite possible to keep carriers from meddling with your Android Market experience. If you have an AT&T phone, you can pop the SIM card out and use Wifi to browse the Market; and enabling Airplane Mode, then turning on Wifi works for both AT&T and Verizon phones.
So if you turn on Airplane Mode and use the Market with a Wifi connection, all the apps should be there ready to download and install.
It's not just verizon wanting applications removed:
So why was Gensoid taken down? According to the developer, it was at the request of Sega. They must have contacted Google and gotten the emulator taken off the market. What exactly Sega claimed in order to take it down isn't know as Google usually isn't forthcoming with details, just general overviews, when asked. The next question is, why now?

My only problem with barnacle is that is only does WEP whereas the mobile hotspot does WPA.
We can still use the default wifi app. Other than that I wouldn't tether for a while until we know what verizon plans on doing. I wouldnt be surprised to see them take a big stance against tethering as it weighs down the network.
Remember people verizon is also a home internet service provider so when you tether and disband you're home isp verizon is losing out on both tethering and money from internet service providing.

does having the phone rooted prevent t mobile from blocking the built in tethering feature and allow us to use it without paying the 15$ a month fee and use it for free?
a friend of mines has a unrooted mytouch 4g and t mobile blocked off his built in tethering feature so he won't tether without paying the 15$ a month fee, so im just curious about this!
Use at your own risk. Worst I've heard happen is that tethering gets blocked until you add it to your plan. I've used it sparingly and had no issues or warnings.

From my experience, root doesn't really matter. I have used my G2x to tether since I got it and before I rooted it without a problem. They didn't seem to hard code any checks for a tethering plan into the OS on this phone.
I use the feature all the time, but of course I have unlimited data. All you have to worry about is going over 5gb of data, or they'll throttle you, but you know... theres a quick FIX for that as well. ;D
so tethering is allowed on our device?

I've used my NexusOne numerous times on business trips instead of paying for wifi access at hotels and airports. Never had a problem.
Now that I've got my G2x, the first thing I did was connected it to my laptop to test tethering. It worked fine. I used the built in feature, not an app. No block, no msg explaining I have to add a service. My advice, just hook it up and do it, in home, no traveling and it'll prove itself.

I've swapped out the build.prop file, but haven't gone over yet, so I can't confirm it works yet. From those that have, the popular consensus is, add the fix before going over, otherwise it won't work.

People have been getting nailed right and left, seemingly regardless of ROM. I don't think the update has anything to do with it, they're likely doing some packet inspection to determine what OS the packets are originating from.
when i called in regarding the nasty gram. she emphasized to update my phone. so im guess that is where it is coming from. id agree with you.
Yeah, looks like it was the update. It's weird that all of you got caught those,
I tethered a decent amount a few days ago(don't care if anyone knows, even you AT&T spies!) while my home internet was out, not a thing.
Guess we know not to use any new updates from AT&T until we find out how they detect us without tetheringmanager.apk..

It's because you're using a stock ROM. I believe there's a service (though I can't for the life of me remember what it's called) that can detect if you're tethering or not. Custom ROMs remove the service so they can't tell.

Yeah, I used that much the other week... I've been running CM7 so I'm pretty sure that AT&T is doing some packet sniffing to see the useragent of the packets coming through. I don't think it has to do with the OS you're running.

My wife who has a Streak just got her nasty gram yesterday, now she does tether ALOT, but her phone does not even show a disclaimer for the mobile hotspot like ours does. So, i dont think it has anything to do with the update.
I dont tether alot but I do tether and most months stay around 8-10gigs. (most of that is actually on my phone, I like Netflix)
She is pissed because out where we live we do not have any high speed internet options but we have AWESOME data speeds with ATT but none of the other carriers have anything close. we thought about getting one of those mifi hotspots but ATT only has a 5gig one and that is just a joke to to think 3 teens and 2 adults are going to make that work.

u MUST root to get that option.
it wont change the stock feel of the phone, but you need to be able to get into the system/apps and either delete Tethering manager or use TiBu to Freeze it. then you will be able to tether.

From what I've read on here, AT&T can still look at the packets and might notice. But in other threads, people have noted that they tether occasionally, and don't get caught, and others said they did it once and got warned, and still others saif they did it all the time and never got caught. But, the more you do it, the more likely you'll get caught. And if you are on Unlimited Data, you have more to lose (since they'll take that away from you and add a tethering plan). That being said, you should get a warning first.
Tethering seems to be enabled by default on the Canadian "Skyrocket".
