[Q] Nexus S on MetroPCS GSM Network - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Issue is resolved. MetroPCS ties SIM to device. $15 to switch devices.
I recently purchased a Nexus S from Swappa as an emergency replacement phone for a defective Galaxy Nexus.
swappa com /listing/NDY352/view
I tested it briefly with stock ROM it shipped with and a microSIM in an area with terrible cell coverage, so I thought little of the problems I saw. When I tested it later with CyanogenMod, a full-sized SIM, in an area with strong signal, the problems seem to persist. The solutions I've seen online focus on the Nexus S 4G being flashed onto MetroPCS' old Sprint network, making it difficult to find a solution.
As stated in the Swappa listing above, this is an unlocked T-Mobile Nexus S. It shipped with the box and documentation. The documentation includes T-Mobile inserts. Evidence to me that it is unlocked is that it displays the MetroPCS phone number, it has no T-Mobile branding, and its bootloader was unlockable.
Here are some more technical details:
Settings > System > About Phone > Status > Network, reads, "Unknown"
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""> Service state, reads, "Out of Service."
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""> Mobile network state, reads, "Disconnected"
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""> My phone number, shows phone number, so phone is reading the SIM.
Wireless & Networks > More... > Mobile Networks > Network Operators, when I manually choose MetroPCS, a message pops up reading, "Can't connect to this network right now. Try again later" even though I am in a place that has a strong signal. Another option is available to choose AT&T, and the same error message shows.
Wireless & Networks > More... > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names, MetroPCS LTE is chosen, but no 3G or E icon has appeared next to the signal strength.
I really thought CyanogenMod would save the day here since it worked flawlessly on the GNex. How can I get the Nexus S to work on MetroPCS' GSM network? By taking it to a MetroPCS store.

[Q] CDMA and GSM at the same time on a world phone?

I have an AT&T rooted Motorola Atrix 4G that I purchased and SIM unlocked (still running Android 2.2). I am using it currently on GCI's (of Alaska) GSM network which is currently 2G (Edge) in my area. However, GCI (yeah, this next part is weird) actually has a 3G network, but it is CDMA. I looked and it looks like I can get a 3G data only package from them for $19 a month (separate from the phone package I already have). I called and they said their systems are separate so I can't "have it all" on one number. The question is, would I be somehow able to use both on the phone? There is an option in the settings to use both types of networks, but I am not sure how I would input the CDMA settings to get it to work (if it would).
Reasons why I would want to do this:
GCI's CDMA coverage is not great outside of town (and some places in town). However, their GSM 2G coverage is the largest in the state (works even in crazy small remote villages). So basically I want to maintain good phone coverage but have the faster data when it's available.

How did you get your atrix to connect to GCI? I can't get it to connect. Mine has 2.3 and the phone wont connect to GCI! Will rooting it help?

[Q] SIM Not Detected - Google nexus S I9020A

I recently bought an unlocked Google Nexus S from amazon. The Device works fine on ATT network. When I got it to India and tried inserting an Airtel SIM in it. The phone shows complete Signal strength but says emergency calls only. On the lock screen it says insert SIM.
When I search for available mobile networks it shows my network but unable to connect to it. It does not even ask for unlock code when I insert a SIM from another carrier.
Is this because the phone is locked or is there some other problem?

What network frequencies does Airtel use? If non of them match that could be why, oh and Nexus phones are never network locked
Sent from my ice cream powered Nexus S
Yeah, frequencies should be the reason here.
But only for 3g, the us always being special, especially at&t. ^^ 2g should work worldwide. Set it to "2g only" and see... (if it works, slow data, but at least you can make calls)
I got a Samsung captivate from ATT and it worked also my Galaxy S 4G. All these are quad. band phones so, they work worldwide. Could be some other problem. Got a good deal, so dont want to return it, but I guess I have no option now.
Tried a new sim?
im gonna be going to india in a month or so and i wanted to know if the i9020a will atleast work with voice in india. airtell or vodafone it doesnt matter. I don't need 3g but i was hoping voice would work so i could just use this phone in india.
did you try to reset the phone?

Verizon Galaxy Note 5 on Reliance Network in India?

I have a Galaxy Note 5 from Verizon and will be going to India soon. Is there any way to get this phone to work with Reliance which is a CDMA network in India? I'm moving, so I'm going to disconnect Verizon when I leave.
No idea
According to this website, yes:
http://willmyphonework.net/
Verizon phones are not SIM/carrier locked, so as long as you settle up with them (so they don't blacklist your device's IMEI), you should be able to take it to pretty much any carrier, whether it's CDMA or GSM.
You may or may not get a 4G data connection depending on what the carrier supports, but phone calls & texts should work with no difficulty. For instance, popping an AT&T SIM card in a Verizon Note 5 will get you phone calls, text messages, and limited 4G support (in my area I can only get it to connect to HSPA+).
You may need to manually program in the appropriate APN settings for the carrier you're trying to use it on.

LG V20 AT&T access O2

Driving me nuts - should be so simple.
I have a 2nd hand AT&T LG v20 (H910)
The guy I bought it for claims it works on EE
But I cant get it to work with an O2 Postpay sim. (The O2 sim works perfectly in another phone)
Ive been into Settings->mobile networks->View networks and O2 is listed
I can select O2.
O2 is then shown at the top of the screen and there are 3 bars of signal strength
But I cant make or receive a call. If I try to call It eventually times out with the message 'Network Unavailable'
Digging around some more I find
- the networks it can detect include O2 RAT 4G (along with Vodafone, EE, 3 and can be 4G and/or 3G and/or 2G). O2 RAT 4G is the only O2 network detected and the phone says it is registered on this network
- A different (but similar) phone on which the SIM card works (LG V20 H990DS) detects primarily 3G networks (Vodafone, EE, 3, either 3G, 2G or both) including O2 RAT 3G and the phone says it is registered on this network
So maybe I have to change the networks to which the phone can connect . . . . but how do I do that?
Any suggestions as to how I get this phone to work on O2 postpay

Question 5G with XQ-BQ62 in Canada

I have the USA (XQ-BQ62) XPeria 5 III. I got it today.
I am an AT&T customer but I am currently in Canada. I have a plan that covers free roaming to Canada.
The Xperia 5 III isn't sold in Canada, I bought it from the US.
Before I got the phone I checked [AT&T's list](https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/pdf/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf) of supported phones. It lists the XPeria 5 III under "will still work on our network after we phase out 3G in February 2022" but it is not listed as one of their 5g supported phones.
I had a confusing series of conversations with AT&T reps where one told me I needed a new SIM card, and then a second one told me I did not, and then I called back and a third person checked my IMEI/ICCID and said I had a version 27 SIM and version 27 is the minimum supported. OK.
If I punch in the magic *#*#4636#*#* code, it says I'm on the LTE data and voice* networks, and that the provider is Bell. It says "NR available: False".
My "preferred network type" is NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA.
If I switch "preferred network type" to "NR only", I simply get Data Service: Disconnected.
(One funny thing, if I switch to NR Only, then switch back to NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA, for a brief second it shows "NR Available: True". But then it jumps to LTE.)
If I go to "Access Point Names" in the mobile settings, the only option is the one selected, "ATT Nextgenphone" / "nxtgenphone". Nothing else is listed.
I know I'm kind of cheating here by using a phone that isn't even available in Canada, with a SIM from a provider that doesn't support the phone.
But, is there any way to get the network to give me 5G?
[This page](https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/CA/sony-xperia-5-iii) shows band compatibility for different carriers, it lists Bell and Rogers and has two different entries for "Global" and "America" which I think refers to the US [XQ-BQ62] vs International [XQ-BQ72] model numbers for the 5 III. The "America" line shows it supports the correct frequencies on both Bell and Rogers and "Global" says it is supported on Bell but not Rogers. (I used to get Rogers while on the AT&T roaming but recently it switched to Bell.)
[This page](https://www.phonemore.com/specs/sony/xperia-5-iii/xq-bq62/) says the XQ-BQ62 supports the 66 and 71 bands which are the ones crossed out for the "Global" entry on the other page.
This seems to suggest the phone "can" get 5G here (even on Bell) and if I'm not getting 5G it's because I don't have permission somehow.
* But the last person I spoke to at AT&T said maybe VOLTE would not work anymore if I went back to the US. Guess I'll find out!?
I wonder if you ever resolved the 5G issue in Ontario. I too have the XQ-BQ62 on Telus; however, I have never been able to connect this phone to 5G networks.
I'm wondering if flashing any of the firmwares on XperiFirm would work.
