Hello!
I just bought a freedompop Overdrive hotspot (sprint hotspot device, seirra wireless, qualcomm 3g)
In its admin settings, it has a feature to turn off the Wifi antenna when there is a PC connection present on the USB.
This would be AWESOME if i could simulate this connection... meaning when i turn the key off in my car, it would make the hotspot think a pc is connected- this would turn off wifi and not allow my data use to keep going when I am not in my car.
Is there any way to simulate this data connection? I have tried just cutting the data wires, it doesnt work. I think it needs to see a certain amount of resistance there... . or a much bigger fear- it needs to actually communicate with a pc:silly:

I wonder if it's possible to set your phone as a WiFi hotstop (http://www.wmwifirouter.com for example) and then connect your device to the "networK" or is it only possible for other devices?
I don't think so, if your phone is actually acting as a wifi hotspot, it is actually accessing internet via your data connection with cellular line, so you don't need to connect your phone with itself again. You should be able to access internet with your phone's web browser at the same time your phone is acting as a wifi hotspot.
Damn, that's sad. So with that being said, will it actually charge money if I set it as a hotspot and use the network on another device?
It depends if you already suscribe to a data plan. If yes, you should not being charged more tha what your plan allows you. As long as you use WMWIFIrouter and set it to connect via cellular line , do not set it as usb modem, or you will be charged the same way as you use ''usb modem'' app.
it is possible to use my Galaxy Mini as a WIFI Modem? i want to share the PC internet connection via Wi-FI to my laptop,is it a way to do that? i know that i can use my phone as a modem if i have a data plan, but i dont want that. pls help
ํYou can use Android phone to Wifi hotspot.
Setting - Wireless & Network - Portable hotspot
If I understand correctly you want to connect machines via WiFi to you phone that is plugged in to your main PC which has an internet connection?
Ahh, I know what you want, I used to do it on my iPod.
I'm pretty sure PDANet should allow this, just USB tether with WiFi on, and it shouldn't turn it off.
If it does, then there's another program that I can't remember that does the same thing.
Can someone explain why this tablet needs a Hotspot. If it doesn't have 3G/4G connectivity why would I need to connect something to this device? When I connect it to a Wifi any other device could connect to the same Wifi without going through the tablet. When I connect the tablet to my phone I just turn on the Hotspot on my phone and connect the tablet via Wifi. So my question is what is the purpose of having a Hotspot built into this tablet? I'm just not seeing a need for it........
Because USB Ethernet adapters work, too. My work has no WiFi Router in range for me, but I can connect a LAN cable to my tablet and turn that into a WiFi hotspot for my phone.
And Hotspot is just a general feature in Android. It also not makes any sense to have mobile.data and such (which is also clogging memory) on a non-telephone tablet, it's just there.
Can the Surface RT USB tether to smartphones? I have an older LG P990. When I tethered to my normal PC it had to first quickly install AndroidNET or whatever. That makes me think that it won't work on the RT.
I need to be able to tether, I could just go the route of a mobile hotspot, but I don't like the idea of every single Chinese person on the train trying to steal my wifi. They are pros at stealing wifi in this country.
I heard you can tether using bluetooth. Is that possible on the Surface RT?
Thanks,
lgnationrc
I tether to Surface from my Galaxy Nexus over bluetooth. It disconnects all the time without any reason but haven't been able to figure out why. With BT I can enable it on phone and it shouldn't eat battery like having wifi hotspot all the time active. I just open the BT PAN from Surface with 2 button presses and it opens in 1 sec. Only if the disconnect issue could be solved...
A few points, for the record:
1: Windows RT *probably* supports USB modems, which is how most wired tethering is done (the phone presents itself to the PC as a USB modem). I haven't tried, though.
2: Unless you use a crappy password - and really, why would you; it's not like you'll need to remember it at any time that you can't access it - WPA2-PSK is effectively unbreakable.
3: Don't be sure that Bluetooth is that much more secure. It is shorter range and lower power, though... but it's also lower bandwidth. A decent cellphone connection (3G, not even terribly good 3G) will saturate it.
Thanks, I will try it and see how it goes. Otherwise I will use Wifi, have no choice. Wifi gets stolen here all the time, even with that kind of setup.
Thank you
As in the title, I'm finding it very annoying just to share my phone's wifi connection to my pc via usb tethering. My oneplus 5t just does it, no need for some stupid workaround. The 7 pro is forcing the wifi to disconnect upon enabling tethering. I found a workaround, but i feel like it's just a stupid bug.
The "bug" is going in the hotspot and tethering settings, first having my usb connected. Then enabling usb tethering (it will kill wifi), then turn wifi back on.. Which still leaves usb tethering on. Not an ideal way just to enable wifi tethering..
In most cases you cannot have both WiFi (on the phone itself) and USB tethering activated at the same time. The reason is quite logical from the standpoint of the phone...it generally uses WiFi for its own internet access...at times...and it uses WiFi to share internet access with an external device like a laptop. So the phone can get confused when you use USB tethering to share an internet connection with a laptop and then turn on WiFi also...the phone is not sure what you are trying to do.

Try VPN hotspot from play store, it allows you to share your Wi-Fi, I use it for that purpose. Use the repeater option, and you can access configuration in the top right corner.

You can't tether your Wi-Fi through USB, and if you figure that out, let me know

One would use wifi usb tethering when: You want to share an WIFI (as opposed to usually slower Data) internet connection with a computer that has horrible connectivity.

The bug part already shows the workaround i had to use to share wifi through USB.
It's annoying to me because the oneplus 5T does it instantly.
