[Solved] [Q] CWM recovery (v6.0.4.7) in Moto G - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello, I have noob question about CWM recovery and I don't know where to post it (sorry moderators, if this is the wrong place)
my question...
when I do "format /system", "format /data", "format /cache" and "format /data and /data/media (/sdcard)" in Mounts and Storage Menu .. will that format all the files stored in my phone storage?
when I want clean install ROM... is it enought to do "wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache partition" in general menu and "wipe dalvik cache" in advanced menu?

Bro if u format data-media then every files is gone even ur ROM(flashable zip file) it will erase everything .its not need to format media storage bro
And for clean installation format data, cache, davlic cache and under mount and storage format system is enough bro but formatting data, cache under mount and storage will be more fine

[Q] Stock Recovery Factory reset..

I have accessed my stock recovery and formatted or wiped my "Cache partition" without any problems. But when I choose "Wipe data/factory reset". There's an error coming up. Here's the log:
Android system recovery <3e>
Wipe Cache Partition:
-- Wiping cache...
Formatting /cache...
Cache wipe complete...
Wipe data/factory reset:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
E:Can't open /data/cwpkg.zip
E:Can't open /data/cw.prop
E:Can't open /cache/cwpkg.zip
E:Can't open /cache/cw.prop
Formatting /cache...
Data wipe complete...
I believe that drive E:/ stands for my MMC right?, I've double checked it, file that being called on is not existing. Even the stock MMC doesn't have those files.
Could anyone shed some light regarding these files that are being called on?
Thanks.
P.S.
Just a guess, "cwpkg" means "ClockWork Package"?
Edit:
corrected typo..
[Q] Are the errors causing you any problems? or are you simply curious?
I wonder if you get this error if you perform a wipe cache before doing a wipe data/factory reset. Someone with more Android experience than myself might be able to confirm this???
But, perhaps the wipe data option performs its own wipe cache and as you've already done that it then can't find the files to delete??
Skanob: wrong. E: stands for Error:
i would try reflash the ruu

There's actually no problem.. It boots itself fine after wiping. It really doesn't matter what you choose first or last, my take on it is just whenever you choose the wipe the data. that certain "error" comes up.
But everything is A-ok.. So i guess you can say i'm just curious..

[Q][i9020T] Formatting partitions & installing a ROM

Hello, I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can and be clear about everything before I install a custom ROM. I have already rooted the nexus s.
The ROM I'm interested in is this CyanogenMod 7.
In their installation instructions it says
- Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
- Perform a factory reset.
From another guide (AddictiveTips) they just tell us to do the following
- Select wipe factory/data reset.
- Now, wipe cache and dalvick cache.
The xda thread tells us to format system, data, and cache partitions. But the AddictiveTips guide only seem to tell us to format the data & cache partitions.
So my question is, does the system partition automatically get formatted while installing the new ROM, or do you have to manually format it by going to mounts and storage > format system before installing the ROM?
Also, do you guys recommend to format all the required partitions by going to mounts and storage or by selecting wipe factory/data reset and wipe cache from the main menu? Thanks in advance.
...anyone?
Wipe factory/data reset (this will obviously also wipe the caches)
Install zip from SDCard (ROM)
Reboot.

[Q] rom flash without sd card

Could use some help... I've flashed many roms before but this is my first doing so to a device without sd card storage (i9023). How would I go about flashing a rom to my phone? and how can i nandroid backup without it being deleted when I wipe the device?
Don't worry bro... Wiping Data(factory reset), Dalvik, and Cache, won't also wipe your /sdcard partition.
/sdcard can be wiped out with "format" which can be found on "mounts and storage" section.
OK, thanks. just to confirm, when you say /sdcard, you refer to the internal storage correct?

Yes, that's correct.
"/sdcard" won't be formated if you do wiping for other partition.
furthermore, even you wiped sdcard, you can also mount usb to your PC and transfer file after you wipef.
one more thing, there is one thing called "Odin" can allow you flash without sdcard

CWM Menu

I have a few question in the menu of CWM.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
-reboot system now (reboots system)
-apple update from sd card ( what does this do? )
-wipe data/factory reset (you have to do this everytime u flash a new rom)
-wipe cache partition (what does this do?)
-Install zip from sd card (install rom and kernels)
-backup and restore (make back ups and restore)
-mounts and storage (what does this do?)
-Advance (battery calibration, dalvik cache, right?
-power off ( shuts down )
Edit:
When I see rom and kernel that says 'Clear cache' is that partition cache?
From eagle blood
WIPE WIPE WIPE
wipe data
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
back to main screen
mounts and storage select format/system <<< (What is this? Is this required before you can install any rom?)''
--
Also, if I click wipe data/factory reset, than I don't need to do wipe cache and dalvik right?
I know for a fact that...
Wipe cache- just wipes the extra cache (does what it says)
Apply update- can be used to install updates like kernels if the zip is changed to update.zip
Yes when it says wip cache it means the cache partition, and you still need to wipe both caches after a factory reset.
Hope this helped!
So everytime you install a new rom, it's best to do
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
right?

Updating ROM:
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
-wipe data/factory reset(good in practice, but not necessary)
Changing ROM:
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
-Format System
How do I format the system?
I'm asking this because I'm going to get this phone in like 1-2 days.
Is it necessary to format system? Say Eagleblood to cm7.
When changing kernel, I should do only cache partition and dalvik cache right?
EDIT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158377
What is this? Seems like people deleted their internal partition? What caused it?
Sorry for being a noob. :/
Edit2:
Say I got my phone running stock gingerbread, and I have CWM installed. And I wanna flash CM7.
Are these the correct steps?
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
Than install from sd card and select rom.

Format system is under mounts and storage in recovery.

-Format system

What's the consequence if I don't '-Format System?'
Also, if I format system, that means everything even the rom will be deleted right? Won't mess up partition table or anything like that right for cwm?

This is my first Android device, coming from a iPhone 3GS.
I have flashed rom before using CWM, but that was on my friend's HD2.

Dont forget to backup, just if something goes wrong. Thats before doing the wipes.

Yes. Everything will be deleted. The partitions will not be touched.
Everything I use is as follows:
Wipe data factory reset, this clears all data on your phone, including the present rom and kernel, to make room for the new one.
Wipe cache partition, this clears all saved data and stuff you've been doing on your previous rom.
Install zip from SD card (External SD)
Install zip from internal SD card, normally when you download a rom from your browser lies here.
Advanced:
Wipe Dalvik cache, this I'm not sure what it precisely does, though it clears data from previous roms.
Key test, this is mainly used for fixing broken or not working keys.
And reboot system now speaks for itself.
That's all I use for flashing anything

CM Recovery: wiping/formatting options

On CM Recovery 5.0.2.0. Trying to figure out definitively which wipes/formats to perform before new ROM/kernel... there are several options, some of which seem to be redundant.
Main Menu (these are the only two I've done in the past I think):
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
Mounts and Storage Menu:
format /sdcard
format /system
format /cache
format /data
format /boot
format /wimax
Advanced Menu:
wipe Dalvik cache
Most instructions I've seen say to "wipe" system/data/cache/dalvik/boot 3x each. The 3x seems funny to me, but whatever, it doesn't really take much longer. So I'm guessing I want to do just about every option above, minus my SDcard obviously. What about the /wimax option though? I never have heard that one mentioned...
Thanks!

Wipe data/factory reset, flash morfic dalvik-wiper.zip.
No need to do 3 times or silly things like that.

When installing a new custom rom & not just updating it to a newer version it's advisable to, 1: Advanced menu: wipe dalvik cache. 2: Mount & Storage menu: format system, cache, data & boot! You're riight about the minus sdcard wipe obviously, & usually in my experiance if you're just updating to a newer version of your existing custom rom, usually just wiping your dalvik cache & a reboot will surfice! No idea about the wimax part so don't bother, but I've never seen a dev instruct anyone to go through the process of wipng 3x???
