How Do I Do an EXT4 Wipe?

i got virtuous unity 2.37 and want to install 2.39. its suggested i do a ext4 wipe before nstalling 2.39. i want to make sure i'm doing this right.
so, to do a full ext4 wipe, i must boot into recovery and then wipe all data, cache, then go to advance and wipe dalvik? is this correct?

Maybe you must go in Wipe / Format menu,then format sd-ext.

Go to mount and storage, click format sd-ext and click yes. Your ext4 partition is now wiped.

hi itachi.. does your advice regard wiping the sd card?
also, someone suggested that an ext4 wipe involves going to Wipe/Format and selecting wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, format system, format data, format cache and format boot. is this true?

It does not affect the FAT partition of the SD card. Only the Ext partition. And by wiping data, dalvik, formating system, data, cache and boot, you are literally doing a full wipe of the phone which people normally do when they change from 1 Rom to another.

thats exactly why im doing a full wipe.. to upgrade my rom to a higher version. but your way of wiping data seems like it involves wiping data from the sd card, which is risky and unnecessary when installing/upgrading a rom. and it can wipe out the rom on the sd card that you want to install anyway. so then whats the point'?

I don't mean changing to a higher version, I mean changing Rom (like from cyanogen to miui) . If you are upgrading to a higher version you do not need to wipe data. All you need to do is just wipe cache and dalvik, boot and system too if you want. This way you will get updated to the latest version while still retaining your application data.
And yes, technically you do wipe the sdcard, but only the EXT partition, which is where your apps are placed in if you use A2SD+. Your FAT partition, which is the one recognised by the computer and where you put all your data in, is not affected. Hence it will not wipe out the Rom you are trying to install on the sdcard.

[Q][i9020T] Formatting partitions & installing a ROM

Hello, I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can and be clear about everything before I install a custom ROM. I have already rooted the nexus s.
The ROM I'm interested in is this CyanogenMod 7.
In their installation instructions it says
- Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
- Perform a factory reset.
From another guide (AddictiveTips) they just tell us to do the following
- Select wipe factory/data reset.
- Now, wipe cache and dalvick cache.
The xda thread tells us to format system, data, and cache partitions. But the AddictiveTips guide only seem to tell us to format the data & cache partitions.
So my question is, does the system partition automatically get formatted while installing the new ROM, or do you have to manually format it by going to mounts and storage > format system before installing the ROM?
Also, do you guys recommend to format all the required partitions by going to mounts and storage or by selecting wipe factory/data reset and wipe cache from the main menu? Thanks in advance.

Wipe factory/data reset (this will obviously also wipe the caches)
Install zip from SDCard (ROM)
Reboot.

Questions about "wiping" data

Ok, with all of the talk about making sure folks do a full wipe before installing ICS, I would like to get some clarification on all of the different wiping methods and which is the best way...
I know of these ways:
1. Via custom recovery - you can wipe data, system, cache, etc.. individually.
2. Via holding Power+VolumeDown until bootloader text appears,, then wait until menu appears and select the Wipe Data option (instead of the cold boot option).
3. Via AARD SuperWipe full script
And then of course, there is the "Reset to factory defaults" in the OS itself...
Which is the best to use? I would assume the AARD SuperWipe full would be the most thorough as it recreates the partitions and everything (instead of just formatting them).
FOr users that have the ability, would an NVFlash of the OS be "more thorough" than CWM method?

Don't use super wipe script. A lot of people reported having problems of some ROMs not flashing correctly after using it. There is no reason to use the "full" version anyway. It formats the /media partition(your internal storage partition) which you don't want to nor need to format.
Wipe Data in your #2 does pretty much the same thing as "Reset to factory defaults". They both wipe /data and /cache but do not touch /system.
The most thorough way of wiping that I use is via CWM.
I do all of this within CWM if I want to ensure a clean install of a new ROM and it has never failed.

- wipe cache partition
- advanced / Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Mounts and Storage / format /system

I've tried ALL of the above methods - all with the exact same results, to be honest...
Even if I revert back to honeycomb (even after a full wipe), I STILL exhibit the reboot issues (it's not just me - look around). This was NOT happening before with the exact same version of Revolver. This tells me that there is still yet something else that was changed during the ICS updates. We know the bootloader was updated - i'm now testing ICS with the old bootloader.
Other than the bootloader, what else could have changed?? Unless they upgraded the firmware on a particular device during the ICS update (wifi chip, bluetooth chip, etc). Other than that, I just can't come up with an explanation as to why Honeycomb won't even run properly anymore!

If you use the --create flag, nvflash will format ALL the partitions and then flash them. If you use the --download flag, it will just overwrite the partitions you send it.
That being said, I agree at your wiping method is more than enough. Most times, I don't bother wiping, especially data.

[Solved] Right Way to Wipe/Format using 4EXT Touch Recovery

I've been using 4EXT Touch Recovery to wipe/format before flashing certain roms. Is there a right way on how to wipe/format using 4EXT Touch?
This is how I do it (correct me if I'm wrong):
1. wipe date/factory reset
2. wipe cache
3. wipe cache + dalvik
4. wipe dalvik cache
5. wipe battery stats
6. format system
7. format data
8. format boot
9. format all partitions (except sdcard)
10. format sdcard
11. flash rom

If you are flashing an update of the same ROM do "wipe dalvik cache + cache" (in case the Developer has not clearly stated that the update requires full wipe)
If you are flashing a new ROM use "wipe all partition (except sdcard)" it will do all the wipes from the wipe menu, no need to repeat it
And wiping the sdcard every time you install a ROM clearly does not make any sense, you are deleting all you pictures, music and all other files that are not related to any ROM you are using

I didn't know that "format all partition (except sdcard)" is the same from 1 to 8. I'll try using it from now on every time I install new roms. Also, I thought that wiping my sdcard every time I install rom is to make that rom fully utilized/functional. And that is why I back up all my pictures, music, and all other files in my laptop. Anyhow, thank you for your simple but very relevant response.

There are some ROM specific files on the SDcard but a full wipe (all partitions except sdcard) clears them too

Am currently on Crombi KK, looking to try out the Lollipop 5.0.2 Zombi-Pop Beta. I know just enough to be dangerous. Installed Crombi-KK to internal, then reinstalled to run ROM2sd a while back, SDcard set up in GParted. Have TWRP 2.8.4.0, just want some clarification on how and what to wipe. ROM thread states to do a full wipe, but I've never been totally sure on what constitutes a full wipe from recovery. From Wipe option in TWRP, there is Advanced Wipe and Format Data. Do I chose one or another or both? In Advanced Wipe, there are 6 partitions:
Dalvik Cache
System
Cache
Data
Internal Storage
Micro SDcard
What one(s) do I select? Since I'm running ROM2sd, do I need to run ROM2sd zip first?

A full wipe is a wipe of data, cache and Dalvik. In most cases that is sufficient moving to a different rom base and the default in TWRP under the Wipe menu.
If you encounter weird problems, format /data/ (and don't interrupt it. Takes 90 minutes or so!)
There are only very specific scenarios where wiping /system would make sense. /system gets formatted anyway during rom installation - no need to wipe it.
Internal storage - if you want to get rid of everything but do not want to format /data/. Wiping data wipes everything except /data/media/ in TWRP (that's where your personal files live). Wiping Internal Storage wipes everything including /data/media/
Micro SD - wipes your microSD or - in the case of data2sd/rom2sd - the fat32 partition thereof.
If you want to wipe/format your rom2sd /data or /system partitions, yes - you have to flash rom2sd1.zip first
