I've been using 4EXT Touch Recovery to wipe/format before flashing certain roms. Is there a right way on how to wipe/format using 4EXT Touch?
This is how I do it (correct me if I'm wrong):
1. wipe date/factory reset
2. wipe cache
3. wipe cache + dalvik
4. wipe dalvik cache
5. wipe battery stats
6. format system
7. format data
8. format boot
9. format all partitions (except sdcard)
10. format sdcard
11. flash rom

If you are flashing an update of the same ROM do "wipe dalvik cache + cache" (in case the Developer has not clearly stated that the update requires full wipe)
If you are flashing a new ROM use "wipe all partition (except sdcard)" it will do all the wipes from the wipe menu, no need to repeat it
And wiping the sdcard every time you install a ROM clearly does not make any sense, you are deleting all you pictures, music and all other files that are not related to any ROM you are using

I didn't know that "format all partition (except sdcard)" is the same from 1 to 8. I'll try using it from now on every time I install new roms. Also, I thought that wiping my sdcard every time I install rom is to make that rom fully utilized/functional. And that is why I back up all my pictures, music, and all other files in my laptop. Anyhow, thank you for your simple but very relevant response.
There are some ROM specific files on the SDcard but a full wipe (all partitions except sdcard) clears them too

Hello, I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can and be clear about everything before I install a custom ROM. I have already rooted the nexus s.
The ROM I'm interested in is this CyanogenMod 7.
In their installation instructions it says
- Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
- Perform a factory reset.
From another guide (AddictiveTips) they just tell us to do the following
- Select wipe factory/data reset.
- Now, wipe cache and dalvick cache.
The xda thread tells us to format system, data, and cache partitions. But the AddictiveTips guide only seem to tell us to format the data & cache partitions.
So my question is, does the system partition automatically get formatted while installing the new ROM, or do you have to manually format it by going to mounts and storage > format system before installing the ROM?
Also, do you guys recommend to format all the required partitions by going to mounts and storage or by selecting wipe factory/data reset and wipe cache from the main menu? Thanks in advance.

Reboot.

-wipe cache partition (what does this do?)
-Install zip from sd card (install rom and kernels)
-backup and restore (make back ups and restore)
-mounts and storage (what does this do?)
-Advance (battery calibration, dalvik cache, right?
-power off ( shuts down )

I know for a fact that...
Wipe cache- just wipes the extra cache (does what it says)
Apply update- can be used to install updates like kernels if the zip is changed to update.zip
Yes when it says wip cache it means the cache partition, and you still need to wipe both caches after a factory reset.

Also, if I format system, that means everything even the rom will be deleted right? Won't mess up partition table or anything like that right for cwm?

This is my first Android device, coming from a iPhone 3GS.
I have flashed rom before using CWM, but that was on my friend's HD2.

Dont forget to backup, just if something goes wrong. Thats before doing the wipes.

Yes. Everything will be deleted. The partitions will not be touched.
Everything I use is as follows:
Wipe data factory reset, this clears all data on your phone, including the present rom and kernel, to make room for the new one.
Wipe cache partition, this clears all saved data and stuff you've been doing on your previous rom.
Install zip from SD card (External SD)
Install zip from internal SD card, normally when you download a rom from your browser lies here.
Advanced:
Wipe Dalvik cache, this I'm not sure what it precisely does, though it clears data from previous roms.
Key test, this is mainly used for fixing broken or not working keys.
And reboot system now speaks for itself.
That's all I use for flashing anything

I'm no expert but why would you delete the sdcard?
Root, install CWM recovery via rom manager. Select if you have 4g or not.
load rom onto root of the sdcard
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Flash rom
If you want to install a custom kernel instead of the one that comes with your rom of choice
After you flash the rom
Go back and rewipe dalvik
Then flash kernel
Reboot and enjoy

There's no point in wiping the dalvik twice, and instead of wiping the dalvik in CWM I'd use dalvik-wiper.zip by Morfic. Flashable zip, and it actually wipes the dalvik.
The rest is all good to the best of my knowledge.

on the SD memory are two folders named .android_secure and Android where Android specific things are stored in. I have read that for a new and clean system build up would be good to delete this folders before.

I have only the normal stock rom 2.3.6 with stock recovery (no CWM) and want to stay there.
So then I think the best way is to go over the menu and do a reset to the factory settings. Delete the to folders on the SD memory manually and afterwards I will go into the recovery menu and delete the dalvik cache and then apply the ICS update.
Why i want to to this? I have at the moment a lot of useless Apps installed and i want to refresh all and start with a clean system with upgrading to ICS. Thats all.

the ones that concern me are the format boot and format all (because this would include boot).
if 'boot' is formatted, does that wipe out the 'hboot' utility, because surely that would be quite risky...

Boot means the boot.IMG file which is flashed when installing a custom ROM and it contains the kernel and ramdisk. There is no risk whatsoever to hboot being wiped as hboot is a separate thing altogether and has its own partition and the recovery is not allowed to wipe it by design

I am a little confused on the terminology. I have done some searching and I came across the same question: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2107425 but it didn't really explain what manual format/system means for TWRP...
For instance, to install Slim Bean 4.2 build 8, it suggests to do a full wipe and then manual format system before flashing the rom.
How would I do this in TWRP? I want to make sure that this is DIFFERENT from format /data right? It is also different from "just" wiping "system" through "Advanced wipe" in TWRP?

no its same
wipe = format
You don't need to wipe anything for flashing a newer version of some ROMs such as nighties. A factory is usually recommended to wipe the cache, dalvik cache and userdata to return the ROM to stock. Then when you flash a new ROM it will overwrite your current one.

Formatting the System is not risk the whole data i have on my device? in the past (as far as i remember,) doing it, deleted all the information i had on the device completely so it was even impossible to recognize it on the PC even all the drivers were well installed.
