There are two ways, both are very simple. Here is where to go to get you going.

[Q] Is it neccessary or possible to downgrade.

Hello,
I want to go back to ICS preferably the 2.20 version on my One XL I am on 3.18 unlocked and s-off is it possible to do this without bricking? If yes than how so? I am pretty competent and confident in my adb and fastboot abilities so this is not an issue however this is my daily use phone and I have no backup device so I really cant afford a brick. (Or else I wouldn't be asking I would find out myself lol) Thanks in advance.

yes, download and run the 2.20 RUU. It's safe as you're S-OFF.

after bootloader unlock. the first thing is to flash custom recovery twrp 2.3.3.1 or under or official cwm
if youre not s-off you need to extract the boot.img from whatever rom youre flashing and then flash it using fastboot. (fastboot flash boot boot.img)
once you s-off this step is no longer needed.

What does s-off provide?

What does s-off offer than root access?
Is it worth getting s-off or not?
Shall I just get root?
So I don't have to downgrade my hboot.
Sent from HTC desire S Android 4.0.4
when you are s-off you dont have to flash boot.img via fastboot when changing roms
Oh right is that it, I might as well just root instead downgrading hboot.

It seems to be a common misconception that S-OFF means root, you can be S-OFF without root; what it really means is that you have turned off write protection to the phone's NAND memory, which is where important parts of the OS and other firmware are stored.

Once you're S-OFF it is a huge convenience, if you think you might be changing firmware or flashing ROMs often it can be well worth it. If you're less "tech savvy" you may feel more comfortable with just an unlocked bootloader.

If all you want is root, it might be easier for you, if you need to unlock your bootloader remember that you will still have your data wiped.

Try using Moonshine with the correct radio and firmware and you should be S-Off. Be sure to read and follow the prompts exactly. It is also important to have all of the phones drivers (including ADB drivers) installed PRIOR to attempting the S-Off.
Is the phone rooted?
Is a custom rom & recovery installed?
If so, you might consider running an RUU for the phone first. After the RUU finishes, do not root, do not install SU, and do not flash a new recovery. Just run the Moonshine S-Off method first.
Anymore questions, just ask away!

For the drivers I recommend this tool made by Snoop05. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
As for the RUU, I need a bit more information.
What is your carrier?
And can you run
fastboot getvar all

in fastboot and post the reply here?
I don't need your serial number and imei, blank those out for your safety.
This way I can find you an appropriate RUU.
Also, I posted a FULLY detailed instructional with a few links here for s-off.

[Q] How to run OTA

How do I run the OTA JB 422 zip file I got off here, want to go back to stock Boost 4.2.2 JB, I am on latest Hboot and have TWRP recovery and S-on, the help would be needed, I tried with TWRP but it failed.... thanks for the help :fingers-crossed:
You need stock recovery, stock system partition (nothing removed) and with S-on a locked bootloader.

How to back to S-ON?
There is a risk to loose data?
Thanks old.splatterhand

S-on is a simple fastboot command.
But that way you don't get stock system.
Easiest way if you are S-off is a hboot downgrade and running a RUU.
For that i made a guide, look into my index thread.
And yes, you will loose your data this way.

For what reason do you want to go S-on?
I would only do that for warranty or if you want to sell it!
This is the wrong thread, the guide thread i mean is made by me.

I won't sell it, only update the firmware to the latest official version.
Possibly, flash a firmware without bloatware.
So what software are you running?

Android: 4.1.2
HTC Sense: 4+

You have a branded phone. That means, you need a backup (from yourself or maybe someone else) with the exactly same software number to get the next update. It does not help to flash a free, stock rom.
Or, you debrand your phone, with supercid, hboot downgrade and RUU (which means losing data).
The choice is yours...

In case you want to debrand, this is the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386426
Make sure, you have Supercid before.

Now works, Iit was a problem with DNS, sorry!
A nice software to make & restore a full backup of the phone?
A nand backup in recovery is a "must".
For userdata the app you need is Titanium Backup!
