I have a sprint galaxy s4 that when powered on has a message that reads somthing went wrong with firmware update...thats it is there anything i can do to restore phone then maybe unlock it later?

I was planning to root my note 2 instead of buying a note 3, I understand rooting is like; Using a different OS, but does that mean all my data will be erased? Is it like having a new phone?
