Nexus 4 is using the Messaging app, and the Nexus 5 is using the Hangouts app.
How do you backup your SMS on Nexus 4 and then restore it to Nexus 5 Hangouts?
Thanks

Are you 100% certain of that? Hangouts may not store the texts the same way. In fact, the developer put the following note on the Play Store:
NOTE: I don't have a KitKat device yet to test this thoroughly, please contact me if you face any issues.
In other words, nobody knows for certain if it'll work. Not being able to backup my SMS would be crap.

If you check out the reviews, people are confirming that it works on 4.4
heres the easiest way, install the new hangouts app on your nexus 4 with your sim card still on it, make sure you enable sms on it, and it transfers everything over to hangouts.
heres the link to the new hangouts app

Well, this topic is focusing on Nexus 4 to Nexus 5, but what about other phones?
I'm currently on a Galaxy S4...which means I have no access to the new Hangouts app (or background integrations). How do I get the SMS into the new one.

Ahh, I didn't realize someone had sent out the APK that worked with non-rooted phones! Did this last night and it worked great. It took a few min to figure out how to successfully get them to sync up (for some reason it wouldn't delete conversations...but then after a few minutes they started disappearing lol).
Looks like I'm ready Thanks all!
I installed Hangouts on my N4 and got that working. Then today I got my N5. Shouldn't the SMS messages automatically appear on the N5 (are they stored in my profile) or do I need to do something to get them to appear?
Thanks!

Same here. My SMS messages were showing in Hangouts on my Nexus 4 but there isn't anything showing on my Nexus 5 now my sim is back in that phone.
SMS messages are NOT stored into your Google account, they still are in the phone.
You have to backup then with SMS Backup&Restore and then restore them on the Nexus 5.

Ahhhh. Thanks.
Here is what I did to get them transferred off my Galaxy Nexus running 4.3
Using Titanium Backup on Galaxy Nexus, I backed up Phone/Messaging Storage 4.... (SMS/MMS/APN)
Copied the three files to my Nexus 5 and restored data only using Titanium Backup.
This is after I initialized hangouts so that hangouts was already the default messaging app.
SMS and MMS with pictures are showing up.

Easy, backup SMS as an xml file with Titanium Backup, upload to a cloud acct like google drive or dropbox, then install the same apps on the new phone, download that xml and restore your SMS via Titanium Backup

Or download Backuptrans Android SMS + MMS Transfer on your computer and then connect both your Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 to the software via USB. Then you can move the messages (both sms and mms) from nexus 4 to nexus 5 by clicking the Transfer button. Easy to finish.
Simple tutorial: Transfer SMS MMS to Nexus 5 Hangouts from other Android Phone
Hope it helps.

Is (was) your Galaxy Nexus rooted? If so, would Titanium Backup be able to backup the SMS on an unrooted Nexus 4? It is my understanding that to root a N4, one needs to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe the phone. Not a desirable action for me.

Both were rooted. There are some good apps out now that handle it. SMS Backup & Restore works at backing up MMS. You have to go into the options to turn it on though. That's what worked for me going from my 5 to my 5x.
has anyone been able to fix the problem with the facebook extension?
it won't stay logged in somehow
already removed facebook, facebook extension, removed permissions on facebook, reinstalled the apps and gave permissions, but the problem remains, it will get the latest notifications then log out and won't stay logged in
resetting my phone to factory is not an option (and is absurd it would be even necessary)
Yep, same problem here, waiting for problem fix, from sony

Hi all
I have been using Samsung and Sony Android phones for years and this is my first Nexus phone. I have just a studip questions about stock email app and exchange sync....
I have added my corporate exchange account to stock email app and sync it self is working as it should. BUT, with Samsung and Sony I was able to set different sync frequencies for working days and weekends (Push for working days from 8:00am to 6:00pm and manual fetching for other times). Is this possible with Nexus 5 stock email app? I cannot find setting for it.
Second question is, Sony and Samsung were able to search contacts directly from company Active Directory using same activesync account. Is this possible with Nexus 5?
Other wise I really like this phone!
Thanks in advance!
1) no not in stock app. There are plenty on play that will.
2) yes. Go into contacts and press search

I have a Oneplus One phone running CM11S. I am not a fan of the basic Google email app that runs my exchange email. I actually like the email apps that are available on the LG G3 or the Samsung S5. Is it possible to load their Email APK onto my phone running CM11S to handle my exchange account. I found the LG G3 email apk but can not get it to install.
Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

Many system apps can not be used on another phone as you wish.
If it will work, you need to put it in system/apps folder, fix permissions to match the other apps there (rw r r), then reboot and see if it works. That is the only way, if it will work.

I am not able to open zip files in my nexus 5's email app. When i try to open it gives an error saying"Unfortunately, you can't save or open this type of attachment.. Anybody has a solution for this. i have sent feedback to google through that app several times. But no response. I am surprised to know that a smartphone by a stalwart software company like google is facing problem like this. this is not an end to it. Problems like contacts sharing through SMS,native 3G video calling, contact copy to clipboard are also persisting. Isn't google bothered about all these small basic facilities to the users !!! If not then what & how different is it from any other device. in Moto phones some of these features are also lacking, but moto phones are able to open zip files. "
This is the default email client?
Edit > confirmed

Yes it is the default email client. For using company email ID via outlook i can only configure the inbuilt email app. but this problem is not evident in Gmail app. In gmail app it opens the zip attachment and then gets redirected to the respective app installed on the phone for handling zip files

Yes I can reproduce the issue. I don't think there is a workaround.
