Moto g sim card - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My other half has a Moto g. Occasionally it will pop up to say no sim card. Despite the phone sim not being moved. Flicking to aeroplane mode and back doesn't fix it.
After doing a brief Google search it appears to be a fault with 4.4.
Has this been fixed? Or is there a fix to stop it happening?
Eta: it is unrooted and running stock
Tim.

people talk about 4.4 but thats just silly. people say i upgraded to 4.4 and THEN i began to have problems with the sim card. if you inquire into what THEN means... a couple of months later. and how long did you use 4.3? oh, just a week maybe! lol
i've bought several moto gs from amazon (new sold by amazon), and about 50% of them had trouble with the sim card socket. some are solved by supplementing the card with scotch tape to make it a tad thicker. some just wont work 90% of the time, but sometimes do for a little while if you reseat the simcard and reboot. it happens on 4.3 and 4.4 all the same. the performance typically degrades over time.
this is obviously a hardware issue, all or a batch of sim sockets are really bad. maybe moto modified the software in a recent update to make it less sensitive to transient sim disconnections. ie: to HIDE the defect, hopefully till the phone runs out of warranty.
disassembling the phone doesnt help: i'm a very handy electronic engineer, and save for replacing the part (its soldered to the main board!), it seems there's nothing you can do to fix it that works over time.
i suggest you have it repaired under warranty.

Thanks I thought it was daft being the software, but that's what Google said so it must be true. I will try and make the SIM thicker and take it from there. Thanks.

[Q] (No Sim Detected) | (No Service)

HI all, I am currently using khalpowers V4, and was using Dexter's 1.3 before too.
What is happening is that every hour or so, the phone will detect no sim card. I'll have to remove battery, take out sim, re insert in, and HOPE it works on my next reboot (chances varies, some times it takes a while before it reads again).
I am not sure if its a hardware or software issue, my sim card is fairly scratched (don't know if that plays a role in this).
What i realize recently is that once i get that problem, i can get into open recovery and wipe DALVIK cache, and it'll detect it again without having me to remove and reinsert my sim card.
Was wondering if this is just me or the rom? Or if anyone have any experience with this kind of madness, this is driving me nuts as i have to restart my phone every hour.

i'll agree with this
it's probably the SIM card that has got scratched, faulty, or something happened to it
i had to replace mine a while back for similar reasons
actually i was unable to send SMS out, but i was able to receive.
and incidentally i'll randomly get no signal
after i changed the SIM card for a new one, all the problems went away.
that was on my other phone.
never had problem on the XT720
extract rar folder then take the only (sub khalpowers V4 folder) and put the SD card installed .... ok ......You'll see it works ... the problem is the double folder

Thanks, i just wanted to confirm if it really is the sim, i suspect it is, but the thing is that it KINDA works, and then don't.... i guess i'll have to invest in a new sim card. Anyone know if Wind will give me a new one if i whine to them?

Could it be a loose connection? I've read about people that have trouble with loose connections on their SD cards positioning a piece of paper to increase the contact force.

yup, i got my replacement for free, but you have to first call customer service, and explain to them what is going on
then if they believe it's a SIM problem, they will tell you to go to any corporate store, and they will replace it for you at no charge
the CS will put a note on your profile, which the store can look up, and honour the free SIM replacement.

unfortunately i tried that already, but executed the idea in a VERY poor way, i actually put the paper at the tip of the sim and pushed it in to make the contact better, BUT when i slide the sim out, the papaer was still stuck inside, now i can't push my sim in all the way.... at least it still works .....
felt retarded, but at least lesson learned ><

Thanks i'll give them a call and give it a try.
I had the exact same problem for a week. At first the SIM got disconnected after leaving the phone idle for 10-20 minutes, then after many reboots the SIM card wouldn't be detected at all.
I got it replaced for free as well, and some of my other messaging and call problems went away too. =)

Theory of one potential cause of freezes/reboots...

So I'm sure that apps have something to do with some of the issues people are having but I noticed that nearly everytime my phone was freezing with the screen off or rebooting it was on WiFi. This last weekend I went to a friends wedding and I used wifi like crazy including wifi calling. I didn't change any apps or software on the phone and although I used it the same way the phone was super stable. It lasted 3 days without a reboot and guess when it finally froze? When I was back at home on my wifi.
My wifi used to be mixed mode n and g. I've now switched to g only to see if that will help since most of the hotel and public wifi spots I was using were g. Speeds are very fast still so I'm not losing out much. I've also noticed battery life better on g only.
I'll test it out for a few days and report back but wanted to share. Anybody else having issues should try either not using wifi at all or switching to a g only network if possible.
Crossing my fingers.
Thats a good theory... I connect to wifi daily, but only g not n.. And I haven't rebooted yet...
Interesting thought. My first one rebooted/locked up and it had nothing to do with wifi. I never even enabled it. It was just a bad evil phone possessed by the devil. My new phone works great with both wifi bands enabled on my linksys wifi router.
For those still having weird stuff happening...swap the thing out!
I hardly use WiFi and my reboots only occurred on the leaked Gingerbread. After the first reboot or "Screen of Death" I cleared all the normal caches and factory settings and kept it "clean".
I had 3 more reboots and it was dead in the morning.
Seeing how CM7 doesn't do this using their own custom kernel, I'm blaming the stock kernel.
I use stock rom, perm rooted, cr4pwares are all removed, applied paul's fix., juice defender balance, screen off setcpu setting. Use wifi most of the time at home, when not at home, only use "4g" only. No reboots nor screen of death yet.

My reboots or freezes usually only happen once a day or less frequently. The fact that my phone froze after finally getting home and worked perfectly while travelling makes me thing its something to my area. It could be the T-Mobile network /radio but I've rebooted a few times while on wifi calling.
Not sure about that theory. I use wifi 90% of the time on N only and have yet to have a reboot since I purchased this device.
Tonight mine rebooted around 7 times while charging it, talking on speaker and browsing. I noticed it was very hot while charging (40c)...I've had the phone since launch and had only one reboot until now.
I think I'm calling tmo tomorrow to swap it.

N only is still different than mixed mode.

I am trying to get my new phone reboots by itself but I couldn't. I tried b,g and n only. They are all the same. My old phone shut off randomly. Hardware issue?
Except the phone is rooted and SIM unlocked, I keep the bloat intact.
My G2x doesn't encounter freezing or reboot after flashed back to stock. No matter wifi is on or not.
Perhaps certain application causes this issue. You have to check it one by one. Probably moving app to SD can be an issue (I keep all apps on application storage).
Could be the MicroSD. Someone needs to test different microsd cards on this phone. I used a Kingston on my old phone that had reboots, but Lexar microsd on the new phone now with no problem. I didn't get reboots until I started using microsd card. When I had auto shut off on my old phone, I could boot up the phone with either microsd or battery pull.

Anybody not having reboots use their Bluetooth a lot? Do you leave it on all the time? Do you use stereo Bluetooth?
I just realized the whole time on vacation I never used Bluetooth while I use it a lot here. Maybe another angle.

This is one I've been thinking... Cause I've had no reboots and never used bluetooth once..
I woke up in the middle of the night and this came to me - I have NO idea why!
I had two G2X's with the reboot/freezing issues, both in CM7 and Stock ROMs, with/without 3rd party/market apps. Both have been returned and I am back on a G2 now, but if we can figure this out, I *WILL* be going back to a G2X!
I had never considered one thing that both phones had in common - my MicroSD card. I never tested the phones without the card because it never had occurred to me that might be the issue.
I had in both the same Class 4 Sandisk 16GB MicroSD .
Is anyone else using the same card? Has anyone tested without a MicroSD?
It may not even be the card itself, it may be the reader in the phone!
I'm testing a brand new exchange phone now. Leaving it stock with no software installed by me. No SD card. It already powered down by itself once while charging and required a battery pull.
Brand new, as in brand new brand new, or an actual warranty exchange where they may have sent you a "refurb" that may have been one of the screwed up ones that someone returned?

It's a warranty exchange by mail. So it came just alone with no battery or back cover. It could be a refurb, but it looks brand new to me with all the little teeny weenie plastic stickers on all the buttons just as my original one came as. I think it's too soon for them to have started re-cycling unit for refurb, no?

Not at all, so many people on this forum exchanged their phones that sounds like Tmobile has many exchange phones to give out already.

[Q] Intermittent "No SIM Card-Emergency Calls Only"

Alright everyone, I've Googled my brains out (not in a dirty way) and haven't found any real resolution to the above issue. I've tried all the usual suspects; replacing the SIM Card, cleaning the SIM Card, adding tape to the back side of the card to ensure good contact, replacing SIM/MicroSD PCB Board, fresh Wipe of ROMs and Radios, etc. None of those things have had any real results except replacing the PCB-it seems to be less frequently occurring with the new SIM tray. Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm willing to try just about anything.
Thanks in advance.

How often does this happen?
It only happens to me when I have to change the network mode. I've rarely seen it other except for maybe when my phone finds an LTE signal.
Otherwise, it could be the antennas. My mom once dropped her Samsung Focus and the antennas got screwed up.

Sometimes it'll happen through several reboots within a few minutes. It'll also happen when my phone is sitting, untouched, on my desk. There shouldn't be any network mode switching if my phone isn't moving.

The only thing I can think of is to flash back to Stock AT&T software and see what happens. If you still have the same problem, it's most likely an antenna issue and you might be better off buying a new phone.
Time to return to stock and see what happens. Ugh, what an annoying issue.
EDIT: After returning to stock and installing TWRP I ran the stock UCMC1 software for a little while without incident. While I was setting up CM I got the dreaded "No SIM-Emergency Calls Only" message. I'm at a loss here. I guess it might just be time to start shopping for a new phone.
EDIT: I'm going to try running *SHUDDERS* stock Samsung/AT&T software for a few days to see if the problem persists. I'm pretty skeptical that this is a software issue, though, since I haven't seen too many people reporting this issue.
Good effort
Given all your efforts in eliminating various variables, I'm starting to believe Hangampalli is probably right and it might be a Hardware issue.
But it is a simple observation to stay on a solid stock ROM like the recent UCMC1 (original att version) for a couple of days and see what happens.
You remind me of myself with my Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate) random shutdowns last year. I chewed up all the threads at XDA back to back and tried anything, and it still did it ... but we all know when to quit.
Cheers to your efforts:good:

Well after about 20 minutes into running the phone on UCMC1 Stock my phone came up with the same stupid error. I'm going to see if AT&T is willing to do anything for me since I just got this phone as a replacement in October. But if not, I guess I'll be phone shopping. :-/ Such a shame because I really love this phone and its community of users and devs.

I got the phone as a replacement from AT&T (bad headphone jack, last time) in about October. I'm going to try to see if they'll replace it for me. Fingers crossed.
Ya I have had this same problem. Changing ROMs fixed it for me though.

AT&T apparently warranties their replacement devices for 90 days or until the end of the original device's warranty, whichever is longer.
What does that mean for me? I'm boned. I guess I'm stuck with my iPhone until I buy a new phone. It's going to be hard leaving this great community of Developers and Users and shedding such a great device.
Humm... I wonder if I have the same problem, is there any tests you can do to see if it is the sim card tray or something like the attenna ? I seem to have service sometimes, not all the time.

[Q] Two issues with my Moto G

Hi all. I have some problems with my Moto G about 5 months old.
1: I keep getting a sim card error where it says no sim is inserted. I am aware that you are not meant to use an adapter. I am trying to work out if this is an issue with the actual physical slot being lose or if it is down to a dodgey sim. Is there a known issue where the slots need repair or is it most likely going to be the sim? I will test with another sim tonight. It's very intermittant though unfortunately and can be fine for a week and then do it. To resolve, I simply remove and reinsert the sim.
2: The ear piece (for calls I mean, i.e. not the external speaker) is distorted during calls. It's actually sounds more like the actual casing or ear piece is vibrating/resonating like a slight buzz when people speak to me. It's really annoying.
Should I just get the phone replaced? Annoying as it's such a good phone otherwise and I have paid already to unlock it.
Thanks
Whenever I listen to music, i have to reboot my moto g after unplugging any headphones. If i don't, the earpiece and speaker wont work. Is as if the phone thinks the headphones are still plugged in. I might return the unit for repair depending on the warranty.

That's also a known issue... Most moto g have a battery drop one time. Try to charge the battery for a few hours and then turn it on again.

Ok wierd. It seemed like it was bricked but it was actually I think because the battery got so low that it needed a reset to actually take charge again.
EDIT: Yes thanks to the above for your help. So I bought this in Tesco UK. Reckon I should go back to them to get it replaced? I don't want the hassle if it won't fix either the sim thing or the ear piece. If they will continue to be problems I think I want a different phone. I checked the motorola forums and in fact, it seems that people have had the phone replaced up to twice and they still have the ear piece crackle/buzz problem. Some are saying it is a software problem since kitkat and that motorola will be looking to fix in a later udpate.
Yes, it seems the damaged earpiece is caused by the update, but they replaced my earpiece and untill now it stil works.
If you want to send it back for repair, just contact Motorola, they will help you further.

[Q] [HELP-Stock ROM] Google Nexus 5 cell radio off. Cannot Make Calls, SMS, or Data.

Hi guys,
I've been a lurker on XDA for quite some time, and I just want to say, I absolutely love you guys. You're all very helpful and so knowledgeable. I can finally say I have an issue, I'm hoping is a software issue only, that I need help with.
Last week I was running Stock Rom Lollipop 5.0.1 on my Google Nexus 5 and now I cannot get a GSM signal AT ALL. No Calls, No SMS, and No Data. The same SIM card can work just fine on my unlocked Nokia Lumia 635. I am long past my RMA. What can I do to try getting the GSM to work and TURN ON MY GSM RADIO? I'm sure if the radio turns on, everything else should work as well.
Brief History: Phone has been dropped on cement before and got Screen replaced. My internal speaker got loose and I just got it readjusted by a nice technician near where I live. I've survived with this phone from Day 1 until now with some cosmetic wear-and-tear, but it was only from last week before I left work, AFTER I UNPLUGGED MY PHONE FROM THE WALL SOCKET that the GSM signal just dropped.... permanently. And what I mean by this is, the "radio" is off permanently (I cannot turn it on even with the option in *#*#INFO#*#* with SIM card inserted) even after reboot, airplane mode on/off, and APN setup (which can never be saved and hangs when selecting automatically 'detecting'). Note: The Phone can charge just fine and connect to the computer perfectly fine as well (in case you guys think it may be related to the microUSB port assembly). I have been taking out my SIM frequently, so I'm still not 100% sure if it is or is not my SIM Card Reader pins that have an issue.
I have fastbooted several factory images on this device many times from the Google factory images repository, mainly going back and forth between 4.4.4 and 5.0.1 which I believe are the best releases so far IMO. Even after installing the factory roms on this phone, (no root) I still get no signal no matter what I do. When I remove my sim card tray from the phone, I get "No SIM Card". When I put it back in, I get that message going away, which gives me the impression the SIM card reader is fine. My technician took a look at the entire phone hardware and said he didn't find ANYTHING strange. He tried using a known working back-cover with antennas to debug the issue but that didn't help. I don't remember what he said about the sim card reader, but I think that was also fine (will double check next week). When I got the phone back from the tech, he just told me that there are no "hardware" issues he knows of, and so this must be "software".
Any leads you can give me? I'm pretty tech savvy, and do understand things like partitions, fastboot, adb, etc, so any solution, even abstract, I'm willing to try. Google reps were pretty clueless on helping me out here, so I'm looking for some support, please!
I've also heard that this issue is not uncommon on Nexus 5. Is this true? How many users have been having this issue? I thought Nexus 5 should have been built great to last a long time... guess I was wrong.

Same situation on my Nexus 5 that started a few days ago. Thought it had something to do with the 5.1 Lollipop update and saw some users were having similar problems. Tried flashing different radios/basebands/roms/kernels to no avail. Currently running 5.0.1
Hoping it is not a hardware problem, going to take it to a local technician today. Also beyond warranty. Everything else works fine. Has always been in a hard case but dropped a couple of times with no prior issues. Any insight?
5.1 is the best software. If it's not hardware all I can suggest is a full factory reset. My SD card was not acessable and pple said try this and that command. No luck. Did a factory reset and got the SD back Oh and screen shots which had gone as well.
