OnePlus H to 4G LTE, what's up with a 'reset' - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Consumer Cellular. Have had S4's, iPhones and now a G3 that the data works just fine. Recently put a OnePlus on the contract.
The OnePlus showed a "H" to "H+", but no LTE. I did have the APN file setup correctly.
A week previous I setup the phone with them, providing them with the IMEI. I though because I live in a data 'black hole' that the H to H+ might be 'normal'. I tried repeatedly yesterday to get 4G/LTE to show, with a good number of different APN setups... nada, though some would 'work', no LTE.
Anyway, today I called the company and they had me turn off the phone (I had done that a number of times on my own).. while they did some type of 'reset'. Now the OnePlus shows LTE correctly.
Does anyone know exactly what the company is doing by the 'reset' that I can not do?
Thank you.

It was an issue on their end and they've reset you on their network. That doesn't take effect until you reconnect though, so that's why they asked you to reboot, or even toggling aeroplane mode would have worked.

[Q] Stuck on EDGE or GPRS

When I'm on data, my phone is stuck on EDGE or GPRS when it should go up to 3G or H+. I've tried restarting my phone, turning wifi on and off, turning data on and off and made sure my settings looked okay. Any help is appreciated!
Cataclysm 11/26, Franco r14, dalvik patch. And if it's relevant, I'm on Rogers wireless.
I'm not sure but doesn't Rogers use global frequency in which case you need the 821 model?
I've definitely had 3G and H+ on my N5 (abbreviations much?), but it just seems very inconsistent. It'll go from H+ to 3G, back to H+, then cut out completely, then sit on E or G for a while. Just trying to pinpoint the issue because it's getting annoying haha. Perhaps it's the frequency that's screwing it up but that's definitely not my area of expertise. I do have the D820 model if that's helpful.
I'm having exactly the same problem with Fido right now, I tried pretty much everything including
- flashing back the factory image
- tried every modems from the xda thread in the Nexus 5 Android Development section (currently my phone is on the D821 modem but it didn't change anything)
- changing my apn (but it was obvious that this was not the problem since the phone had a edge connection.
I'm really about to call Fido...
Still, I'm kinda glad to see that i'm not alone.
maybe that the data service in your personal area?
Well going back and forth between 3G and H is normal. It picks up H/H+ when receiving/transmitting and goes to 3G when idle to save power.

I called Fido, the technical support told me that they had something that was blocking me from 3G (but he didn't tell me what it was, he just told me that something was blocking me...) I had my beloved H+ back for maybe a whole minute and then it just switched back to Edge network.
All I wanted to know was if many customers have reported the problem or if I were alone...
Maybe if I'm lucky my phone will get back its 3G soon just like you.
I'm still having the issue today.
I called back Fido and they tried different things like desactiving/activing back my line, "updating my line" and more without any success.
Then I called google and told them the problem. They will change my Nexus 5 for a brand new but at the same time I feel like it is a software issue and not an hardward one... Well, we'll see, I never had a problem like that with any other phone before and the Nexus 5 never had any problem with 3G before yesterday.
I haven't tried everything yet, maybe you could try :
If you are in a LTE area, can the Nexus 5 connect itself to this network? Nearest LTE area from where I live is like 40 minutes away, bit too far just for a test.
Try with a sim card from another company like Telus or Bell, is the phone connecting to the 3G network? (I though about this while calling Google..)
Well, hope that the next phone will be ok.
Here are the few pictures just to show you a proof that even when I request a webpage, the phone will stays on 2g only.

Thanks for the update mark1s. Definitely let me know if a new phone fixes anything, although I'm also thinking it's a software problem.
The problem could just be that there happens to be patches of low coverage in the areas we're testing this out, which seems unlikely in big cities. But testing at work seems to have this problem, but testing this at home I pick up 3G and H+ just fine. Odd..

[Q] Nexus 5 only connects to LTE on T-Mobile

I did some searching around and found a couple of pages with ideas but they have not worked so far. Here's the deal, my son's said his Nexus 5 was getting pretty bad reception so I took a look at it. After some toggling of the network settings I discovered that it will only connect to LTE, not to HSPA(+) or Edge. Where we are, we have somewhat weak LTE (2 of the three towers have been "modernized" with LTE and band 2 HSPA+, one has not and it's slightly closer to us). We have a Cell-Fi repeater so we get strong HSPA+ signal in our house. His sim works fine in a Nexus 4 with the hybrid radio getting Edge, HSPA+ and LTE. My nano sim with adapter that works fine in the Nexus 4 exhibits the same problems in the Nexus 5. I tried formatting the cache from the stock recovery menu and am now looking to do a factory reset since I never did oem unlock this phone so I can't just flash a radio to test.
My gut tells me it's hardware so I have my son rebuilding his phone environment on the Nexus 4 so that we can do a factory reset to see if that helps and I'll unlock it at that point. If it doesn't fix it, I've already started the conversation with the play store. My question is, anyone else seen anything like this? Anything else I should try out?

if lte is in your area, and not a perfect signal, itll still choose to connect to lte by default. if you lose your lte connection, then itll connect to H or 3G, and so on. if you do not want it to connect to lte, go to the phones main settings, mobile networks, then change the preferred network type from lte to 3G. or you can dial *#*#4636#*#*, chose phone info, then change the network type to wcdma preferred.

Thanks for the reply, I understand all that. I don't know if I asked clearly enough or not but the problem we are seeing here is that this particular phone can only connect to LTE which is weak inside my house. So, when it tries to switch over, it just won't connect. I also tried to make a call which will switch to HSPA+ and that too fails. Going to the info menu and selecting WCDMA preferred nets me a phone that won't connect, selecting GSM results in the same. LTE only or GSM/LTE works only if it picks up an LTE signal. Ditto for selecting 2G, 3G or LTE preferred in the Mobile Networks menu. I've also reset the APN's, confirmed that the settings match my MotoX, etc and still no joy.
Just looking for ideas that someone might have that I can try before blowing away all my son's data on a factory reset or, if that fails, hardware replacement.

ok, i understand now. i didnt know that it wasnt connecting to h or 3G when it should. to me it sounds like a device ready to get an rma. i mean there is a hardware mod that could possibly fix it, but its not worth the trouble. if you can get an rma, get an rma.

Yea, according to the nice person I spoke to at the play store, I should indeed qualify for an RMA and I should find out in the next day or so. I purchased the phone new in box from someone and they were able to find the phone and they are now attributing the phone to me.
I am curious about the hardware mod though. Is this just for Edge/HSPA or is it for signal in general? If it's signal in general then I'm not sure I'd want to try it since this phone used to work just fine.

Unable to establish a wireless data connection

I have two Sprint Galaxy S8s that I purchased from Sam's Club. I have the same issue with both of them. Please respond if you are having this issue, or not and if you have found a fix. Apparently it is an issue on multiple Samsung devices with Sprint.
I continuously get a pop-up error that states:
Unable to establish a wireless data connection
LTE: ESM - 38 EMM - x
In the notification panel it shows:
RilNotifier
Mobile data connection error
I have spent hours on the phone with Sprint and they have not been able to permanently fix it. The last person talked to told me to take it to a store and they could fix it. Well, we all know how that goes....
There is 1 temporary fix. If I put in the Dialer code: ##72786# and let it do its thing, it will have no issues until the next time the phone is restarted.
I have update the PRL and profile numerous times. I have installed the latest system updates, factory reset. Nothing permanently fixes it thus far.

I have this issue and it only happens when I have location toggled on.
I've redone profile etc, but as soon as location is turned on it re-appears.
this happens to me occasionally as well. Not sure what is causing it. I normally toggle the "Mobile Data" on and off to get rid of it. It is at random times and not that often but it is annoying for sure
I noticed this today also. I toggled airplane mode but it keeps coming back...
I also have an S8 from Sam's with this same issue, as well as 2 G6's that i purchased from Sprint's web site that constantly drop data connection. Tried all kinds of settings changes, including changing bands, carrier aggregation, reset network, sim pull, etc and currently have a ticket open with the "network team". I have an S6 on the account also that has been upgraded to Android 7. It has no issues at all. Also, the issues seem to only happen in LTE only areas, I have been to an LTE-Plus area twice and the phone maintained a constant connection. That makes me think this is related to HPUE. BTW, the G6 will stay connected for 10 seconds on lte, then lose all data connection for 15 seconds, then repeat. I have watched and timed this behavior with a stop watch for close to 30 minutes, while moving and standing still.

I am not sure how to tell if an area has LTE Plus, but I live in SW Virginia and went 3 hours away for a couple days to Richmond and had no issues. So, it's definitely the network in certain areas.

I am also in SW VA, and after speaking to a few stores, one mentioned that it has something to do with the nTelos merger. I have to use 3G from Roanoke to Danville on a daily basis. even though it is fairly solid LTE coverage.
If you look at Sprint's coverage map, LTE Plus is a darker color. Richmond and Norfolk/Hampton Roads area are Plus.

I have assumed it was something to do with nTelos. I live in Roanoke and work in Christiansburg. The issue is in both places. Follow my instructions in my OP with the dialer code and your LTE will work fine, just have to do it anytime you restart your phone. No need to suffer on 3G.

I doubt it has anything to do with nTelos. I live in Michigan and I get the same issue with my s8 plus and whatever nTelos is, we don't have it.

nTelos was a regional carrier in VA, WV, NC, OH, MD. They were purchased by another local company, Shentel, that operates under Sprint. They are not an MVNO though, they sell Sprint branded phones and service. And all the stores changed to Sprint branding. It could be a different regional carrier from your area, This merger happened a over a year ago and that is when we started getting LTE service. I think the merged network is not capable of dealing with HPUE. That is the common denominator with the G6 and S8.
Galaxy S8 plus and S8 same error
So if I understand all these comments correctly, there is still no resolution to this? I live in Huntington Wv and yes we did have nTelos. I have 2 S8+ and 1 S8 all get this error. I have a ticket in for the network team but I'm not holding my breath.
I am also having this issue. I've done ##72786# that seemed to fix it, but it's back. I change to CDME/LTE from automatic, and it still happens. I was about to do a factory reset. It's my only complaint with this device, otherwise I love it. I am in southwest PA. It seems to happen during cell tower hand offs like if I'm out driving. I just toggled data and the error went away.
Edit: I'm on the S8 Plus but I don't think that makes a difference.

OP6 connectivity issues

Hello,
I have for the past 1 and a half years an OnePlus 6 which since the start I have an issue related to 3/4G speed outside of my home country.
Now please don't start about turning on roaming in order to have internet. I have done that since I've got my phone.
I do have internet, however the speed is absolutely terrible. It is always on GPRS and goes with bytes per second. Texting goes sort of alright, loading sending images takes up to several minutes. Beforehand I had an iPhone and I used to have 3/4G with the same simcard.
I also have a work sim which on my work cell has a good range but on my OnePlus.. again I get hooked to GPRS and it goes on a terrible slow rate.
I have reinstalled my phone several times. Went from Android 9 to 10 and the issue is still there.
It also isn't country related because I have this issue in.. Germany France United Kingdom Italy Austria Hungary Poland. More countries I was not able to test yet sadly.
Does anyone has an idea what this might be? Is this a setting somewhere what is enabled on default? I know multiple OP6 users with the same provider as mine i compared some phone settings and they have a normal speed while I don't. So actually I don't know anymore what it could be.

Try forcing your phone to LTE Only
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Go to phone information
Set preferred network type to LTE Only for 4G
or LTE/WCDMA for 4G/3G
In LTE Only mode, you may or may not be able to receive or make calls.
Get the following error

I don't see any error. It is working correctly as I can see. Your data is off. It's UMTS that is likely to be H+ network i.e. 3G.

Also Phone 0 is your sim 1 and Phone 1 is sim 2, FYI just in case.
I know everything looks fine. My connection says R
However I just don't have any internet with either sim ad soon as I go over the border.
If I put my sim in another person's phone it works. Their sim in mine nope.

Some networks doesn't provide data services while in roaming.
As you say it works in other phone. It seems your device is faulty.
You said you reinstalled Android 9 and 10. How did you do that?
Did you use MsmDownload Tool? Or just zip flashing? Or fastboot rom?
I would suggest to backup all data and completely wipe your phone using MsmDownload Tool.
If you've already done that then I'm afraid Network Module/Chip (usually referred as Modem) is faulty.
You will have to visit service center or repair shop to know exact fault.

Question moto 5g 2022 Problem

I have two brand new moto 5g 2022 phones for me and my wife and they both do everything but work right. You can call someone and they answer but you cannot hear them, as they answer their phone, my phone just keeps ringing while they keep saying hello. Other times it calls and won't even ring. They do all kinds of different things and sometimes even do work but when they do you can hardly hear each other. I should say we got these phones because our old phones did almost the same thing. They were so old they only got 2g and 3g so we upgraded to these. Also I checked the 5g map and it shows we have 5g ultra coverage in my area, also attached the file showing the area.
Thank you for anyone that can help with this problem.

I disabled wifi and same result. I have also rebooted both phones and disabled some apps that were transferred from the other phones.
That's crazy because ever since ive had my 2021 version of the phone, the EXACT same issues have occurred since day one. got the phone in Nov 2021 and still have so many issues with Tmobile towers. Tmobile has a huge handover issue with 5g SA and NSA. Old sprint towers that are still up and running on LTE only, work 100% with no issues, all other towers by 310260 that are configured for CA (carrier aggregation), whether its fdd or tdd ca doesnt matter, I have to airplane mode off then on, wait for the tower to connect, turn off data, wait 5 or so secs and turn data back on, go to the debug menu for the phone *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone information, go down to where it says Ping Test and hit it, make sure that BOTH ipv4 and ipv6 are passing the test. If only ipv6 is passing, then repeat the process until they both connect. This is the only way im able to tell if the tunnel is connected correctly to Tmo. I know HUGE pain in the A but that is the ONLY resolution i have found for this, tmo doesnt care, i have had 20+ tickets opened up and not 1 of them were ever resolved and instantly closed the tkt.
People have claimed that after rooting the phone and installing a custom rom with android 12, that all of the issues are resolved, however I am one of the unlucky people with the xt2131-1 device that will not allow anything other than the stock rom to be installed, bootloader unlocked and rooted but will not allow a custom rom. Last Moto phone I am ever buying.

Thank you for the info, I thought it might be t-mobil itself since the old ones and the new ones are doing the same thing. I did get the one phone to upgrade to android 13 but the other one which is the same phone will not. It still did not make any difference.
