[Q] No service? SIM card stops working - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So today, my phone randomly stops giving me any service. No bars, nothing. It doesn't say that there's no SIM card, but there's a message saying that I should restart my phone because a SIM card was added. Is there any way to fix this?

There may be ways to fix it but it depends on what the problem is so you must troubleshoot it first.
The obvious first steps are to try the sim in another phone and try another sim in your phone.

Tried. My sim works fine in other phones. Just my Nexus

all then its either software or hardware. If you're on stock ROM, factory reset. Still not fixed? Needs repairing

[Q] Help On G2X

Im Having Problems with my G2x Yes its Rooted it was working fine for a couple of months then today i was just texting and it just rebooted and its like it cant read my SIM card i cant get no signal So can any body help me?
It can't get no signal? So then it does get a signal. Anyhow....
1. Try turning airplane mode on then off
2. Try rebooting
3. Does it say Invalid SIM? Because if it does that's one thing if it doesn't it's a phone issue and can be caused by some ROMs
4. Repeat 1 and 2 above but standing out side where there is no question of signal quality.
5. If at this point you still have no signal tell us what ROM and kernel you have, and under volting or over clocking.

go into recovery, and try wiping cache, see if that fixes it. if not make a backup and wipe data. if it still is not fixed then try flashing a different ROM (even a gingerbread one if needed) and post back what you find.
if none of this helps your sim card might be busted, in which case call your local t-mobile store

did you follow the directions above?
if you did then one last step you can take is to use the LG KDZ flasher tool to completely and 100% restore the phone to factory condition (do a search in the development section)
this tool has been know to brick phones, so only do it if you have done all of the above things that i suggested.
if that doesn't work then it is most likely a hardware problem, which means you have a phone sized tablet now

Nexus 5 can't detect my SIM card (searching for service)

Hi guys, I just flashed the newest CM11 build, and a day after that, my device stopped recognizing my SIM card.
On the lockscreen it writes: "searching for service"
It also stopped to pop up the usual SIM-code screen when booting.
I tried removing the SIM and rebooting, but it still doesn't work.
Can I solve this without reflashing the ROM?
Please help!

Who knows? It could be faulty sim. Best bet is to see if its software or hardware. Return to stock with data wipe. If still not working, its hardware.

first, have you tried a different sim? have you tried your sim in a different phone? if its is your sim, just grab a new sim from your provider, you dont have to do anything else except put it in.

[Q] No signal anymore

Hey guys... I recently encountered a problem with my nexus 5. Suddenly my phone lost signal and it won't receive any more signal.I was on the latest version of PA on 4.4.2 ...... Now I factory reset my phone and it's stuck on phone setup... What do I do?? I'll try flashing back to stock later and I'll see if it's fixed... Also, before factory resetting my phone, I checked my IMEI and it isnt gone.... It was still there.. Strange... Any suggestions on what I should do? Also, I don't have a nandroid backup....

Still no luck
Guys... Returning to stock didn't do anything... Still the same problem... Now I'm stuck in setting up the phone since it shows that my sim is inserted and it's trying to activate the sim... But it stays there forever ... I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the sim holder... When I tried removing the SIM card for the phone, it failed to eject my SIM card... Now I have to find a way to get my sim out... When I use the pin, it only opens 1/8.. It's too small to fit anything in it... What do I do?? Running out of ideas...
I could give my phone for repair but I live in Dubai and I don't think there are any service centers here...

[Android 5.1] no service

My phone has suddenly stopped having any service whatsoever, I have tried everything, factory reset, format data, but have still been unable to get anything. I tried playing around with the radio settings and the APN but that hasn't worked either. If anyone has some ideas, they would be welcome.
Did you try putting the sim card into another phone?

Pay the bill
Does the SIM status screen show your phone number and IMEI? I had a Galaxy Nexus once that quit working, and those were blank (or maybe it said unknown) in the status screen. I figure possibly the EFS partition developed a fault or got corrupted.
I flashed the 5.0.1 radio and was able to get service again and can now text but I'm still unable to call anyone.Whenever i try to dial the number it simply goes silent, loses service and ends the call. I am also still unable to receive calls as well, all calls people attempt seem to cause me to lose service and only get a voice mail afterwards.
I haven't checked the sim status screen yet and I am unsure as to how.

Maybe try pulling the SIM and re-inserting it? Couldn't hurt.

If it was me, I'd try flashing the radio from Factory 5.0.1 (LRX22C)
It is baseband M8974A-2.0.50.2.22
Extract the radio from the .tgz
Here
You can always flash back if their is no improvement
Thanks for the suggestion but I have already done so and I have observed no improvement. am beginning t suspect that it may be an issue with the EFS but I'm not sure what steps to take to verify this.

After flashing 5.01 radio, did you try to wipe cache and dalvik cache? Maybe the phone process still has bad cache (if possible). Just a try! I hope it works. Otherwise there is some big problem
Thanks for the advice. I am considering filing an RMA with google although I'm unsure if I'll be covered since I live in Canada

If you suspect EFS corruption, try restoring any TWRP backup you made prior to the problem.
The EFS partition will be present in the backup, unless you unchecked if you checked that partition in TWRP Backup.

Efs is not backed up by default. You have to choose it.

I have a similar issue. After I updated to 5.1 my mobile data doesn't work. I tried everything listed before in this thread with no result. I don't know what is happening. The first one I updated using 5.1 factory image. Reverted to 5.0 Factory image and it worked again. So, I update by OTA to 5.01 and then to 5.1, same results. This drives me crazy! I want 5.1 on my Nexus
BTW I have D821 model. Any suggestion?

Your right.
Thanks for correcting me:good:
There is another topic on this matter (i.e. common problem): http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/sim-card-recognized-upgrade-to-nexus-5-t3054267
For me it helped, ejecting and reinserting the SIM card. But I had also flashed other ROMS and cleaned the SMS/call/contacts database. So not sure why it worked.
I also notice that my System UI frequently stops. Does anyone have a stock System UI for me? Many thanks!
I am having similar issue and SIM status shows Radio off, how do I turn on?
Thanks.

No Sim error on nexus 5

Hi guys its been a month since I am facing this no Sim error. After N number of restart it detects Sim and issue comes back again after 2 days or if i restart my phone. Then again I have to restart for number of times to get signal back again hence i dont think it is a hardware issue. I don't know wether upgrading to marshmallow has done the harm or a month back i completely drained out my battery, that has done the harm? I tried updating/changing the rom, bootloader Version, baseband Version but no luck.? I love my nexus 5 and 8 don't want to dump it. Please help me find solution.
ROM CHROMA 5th April build date.
Android 6.0.1
Baseband M8974A 2.0.50.2.29
Please help me find the solution for this.
Flash factory images via fastboot to revert back to stock. That should fix the sim error reading.

Lock the bootloader? Or just flash (I don't want to loose photos and music on my phone)

is it necessary to flash userdata.img?
Flashing userdata.img is not necessary if the phone will boot.
I recommend flashing TWRP, booting into TWRP, and copy your data off the phone to a computer.

Is it possible that the sim reader has been physically damaged? Was the phone use with any type of nano to micro sim adapter?

I don't think it's a hardware issue, because say after 10-12 restarts it detects sim
Maybe the SIM card is defective? It could still be an intermittent hardware issue.

The same Sim card works fine on other devices and tried different Sims too. Still no luck. Can this be a Marshmallow issue? I have read people having this issue after updating it to 6.0.0
I have worked on 7 to 8 nexus 5 phones, all with mm and none of them experienced this sim issue. 7 to 8 phones is not a large sample so I can't really make any conclusive statement.

Will reverting back to kitkat do any good?
Btw after 10 restart i have got back the radio. But this is not the solution but a temp fix. I hope it does not lose it again.
You could try flashing a completely stock kk rom but I am not sure this will fix the issue. You could always try since flashing is quick, setting everything again is a pain.

That is the main issue. Wiping completely and setting up device is really boring. Hence i wanted to know if anybody has tried and solved this issue. Anyways have to try for the love of my nexus ?
I have the same issue (not detecting simcard after booting - no signal after reinserting the card) and a complete reflash of the image has not resolved the issue. Neither has a factory reset etc.
Still stuck with a non phoning phone basically...

It never does after restarts, but it does detect it immediatly after I remove the card/tray and put it back in. I have to do this each time the phone restarts.

Does it get network? Mine also detects Sim but does to connect to network and says no service.
Nope no network at all. No service is all I get as well.
Searching for networks also fails. Via the diagnostics menu I see that the radio is turned off, but I cannot activate it.
Tonight I'm going to take out the battery and see if that resets the hardware... If it works I will let you know.
