unlock Galaxy S

if i buy a samsung galaxy s which is locked to sprint or tmobile, can i unlock it and use with at&t? can at&t network recognize it as a smart phone? because i'm currently using samsung focus. Once i plug at&t sim card into it. It was automatically detected from at&t system and it also automatically add the the data plan to my plan which is trouble for me. Because i don't wanna pay for the data plan which i don't use much. Any idea?
Yes you can unlock it and use it with AT&T if you buy T-Mobile's GS4G. I'm not sure if AT&T's network would automatically discover what phone you have. When I switched to my Treo 650 a long time ago AT&T had no idea I had a smartphone. After the Treo 650 I upgraded to the G1 and they still thought I was using my old non-smartphone.
I doubt their system could detect the type of phone you have.

Spoke to my friend at T-mo, he said yes. is there a reason why you dont want to be detected? its not like AT&T will charge you more for using an unlocked phone. the only issue is network speeds.

I unlocked a SGS4G and a vibrant for some friends, they use them on AT&T. Yep I imagine they can see the phone, but like fknfocused said you're only going to pay the cost of a plan if you don't already have one.
If you're trying to avoid paying those costs, it's not really possible.
However, my friend with the vibrant didn't have a data plan or smartphone prior to using it on AT&T. It got 3G speeds, doesn't mean at some point they don't look at it and go "hey wait" you need a data plan. Just saying it worked.

AT&T won't automatically detect it. Tell AT&T Customer Support your old device information and chances are that you'll be good (no dataplan). I unlocked the Galaxy S 4G/added it to AT&T and I didn't have the device automatically added- I had to call so that they could set it up. They still had me down as an old Razr (the phone i was temporarily using).
i used to have a samsung focus. as soon as i insert the sim card to it. it will trigger adding a data plan to my account. I hate to pay for that because i don't use it much

[Q] HTC Mazaa activation on Verizon

This question has been asked two times already but in the middle of huge discussion threads and there hasn't been an answer yet, so I thought I'd try again.
There is no way I can find to specify carrier information or get into a "programming" mode via the provided Mango apps. I took it to Verizon and the IME was fine, but the programming codes for the Trophy didn't do anything on the Mazaa so they couldn't activate it.
I did pop in a friend's T-Mobile SIM card and it connected and worked just fine via that route.
I emailed HTC and they said they don't have that information and there is no unlock code since the phone isn't locked.
So, anyone have any clue about how to get this phone provisioned on Verizon? It's running the retail Mango as of yesterday.
Thanks in advance!
Well I have a trophy on Verizon now and I know how tough it is to get Verizon to work with you on this. I am going back to tmobile soon so I need a tmobile phone. Because it's unlikely you'll get the Mazaa to work on Verizon, I will happily trade you my mint trophy with box and all accessories for the Mazaa. I will also add cash or maybe my HP Touchpad with case and dock....
Im not trying to take advantage of you or anything like that, it just seems like it could be good for both of us.
PM me if interested.

lol that is because it is not locked. locked phones are only an issue with GSM phones. Verizon uses CDMA. Basically, t-mobile and AT&T use sim cards, while Verizon does not. You can not take a Verizon phone and use it for t-mobile or AT&T and vice versa. Simply not possible as they use completely different tech.
Yeah, I know the phone isn't locked. I already said that.
Do you personally know how to provision and unlocked phone to work with Verizon? The HTC Connection Setup says it can't find a database and exits when I run it.
Does anyone know if its possible to copy carrier specific provisioning information from a retail Verizon WP7 rom and inject that into the rom on my phone? The HTC Trophy seems to be the nearest match. At the least it would be great if I could copy over "the database" from the one ROM image to mine.
Open for suggestions here..
Sprint HTC Mazaa activation
I am also looking how to activate my Mazaa on Sprint. Sprint refuses to add it to their network and it can't even find a cell tower. When I look at the settings page and choose about the phone it appears to be setup for Verizon, although I don't have Verizon and can't verify this for sure.
How did u get the HTC connection setup app to even run? Mine immediately just says I don't have an HTC phone and exits!

unlocked is not everything.
GSM phones cannot be used in CDMA networks, and vice versa. What you need is a CDMA phone, to work with the Verzion network. (GSM and CDMA are not software matters, you cannot simply solve by flashing different ROMs)
Phone is Quad Band
Thanks but the phone is a quad band and can work on all of the carriers.
HTC Trophy Rom Dump
I grabbed the Trophy ROM and looked at the image. There is a folder called operatorpkg in the OEM folder that looks to contain the provisioning information and databases. It also includes some Verizon audio files and some PROVXML files for configuration of Verizon.
I don't think there's a way to get a ROM DUMP from a Mango phone yet, is there? If there's a process I could dump the ROM and check for the operatorpkg folder but my guess is that it would be missing on the Mazaa.
Am I naive to assume that copying the operatorpkg from the Trophy (and nothing else from that image) into the ROM image of the Mazaa would essentially make the Mazaa a Verizon-capable phone?
If anyone knows how to dump a dev-unlocked Mango phone's ROM please advise.
Another HTC Mazaa Request
I too have a "developer" HTC Mazaa, version 7661.wp7_5_trial(mojobld).20110607-1657 and have so far have zero success in activating it on Verizon. It works great as a WiFi device and I want to use it to replace my current phone.
For those who have gotten it to work, PLEASE PROVIDE SPECIFICS. When I take it Verizon and use the IMEI and/or MEID, it "provisions", but as a "test" device. It can't see the network and still gives three beeps when I call ANY number, including *611 or *228. Further, since it's not a "retail" device they apparently don't know the program sequence (the #-#-something-something number that puts the phone in setup mode), and the sequence code one for the very similar HTC Trophy didn't work.
Is there an HTC Mazaa RUU ROM image out there that someone can point me to? I haven't found one yet.
Also, has anyone figured out the HTC Connection and HTC Hub apps to work? HTC Hub says "attention required" and won't uninstall nor install. Also, HTC Connection Setup warns "there is no SIM card" even though it's supposed to work on both CDMA networks (w/o SIM).
Again, please provide SPECIFICS if you can help, (or at this point even "hunches" would be OK --LOL) or if you can direct me to a source who can, I'd appreciate it.
cdma phone
I contacted the person at Microsoft who arranged getting me the dev phone and they swapped it with one that works on Verizon. Just did a "switch device" on their web page and it works great!
Next Issue
So I have the Verizon enabled Mazaa and it works great, EXCEPT I can't send or receive media via SMS. Everything says I need to run HTC Connection Setup, but I can't because it tells me I have no SIM card!
Apparently Connection Setup configures everything needed to do what I'm after, but I can't run it.
Anyone have any ideas?

Wow. You actually got it to work on Verizon? How? Please provide the details. I originally gave up on getting mine provisioned on Verizon and went to Tmobile where it worked like a charm. The problem is, there's NO Tmobile reception in my office complex so I've got to go back to Verizon, with this or another phone. The more details you can provide, the better. Feel free to PM me.
There is an FFU file posted in another thread that may provision the device on Verizon for you. MS sends the device out provisioned for either GSM or CDMA. They didn't provide a method of changing the configuration on our own.
So, to get it on Verizon, you can either contact MS and send it back to be flashed with the CDMA image, or you can try flashing the FFU that was posted here. Mine was originally provisioned for Verizon, but to get Mango I had to flash the FFU - so I am successfully using that same FFU image on Verizon.
Be warned that MMS & 3G don't work on Verizon (SMS does, though). I also get occassional crashes on my Mazaa.

[Q] Can I get no data with unlocked phone?

Does anyone know if it is possible to take an rooted, unlocked phone like a DINC on VZW and get it to run on a carrier with no data service?
I'm wondering if you could spoof the data being sent to the carrier to act as an older dumb phone and just use the phone on WiFi but still have voice/text?
Any ideas on this?
Sorry if it is a repost I tried to do searches but only found people asking about doing it through the carrier, not spoofing the data being sent.

Running the phone after Factory Data Reset Without Verizon SIM, How ?

Hello guys,
After loosing my HTC ONE X on the street a week ago, I bought from some guy an almost brand new GALAXY S3 without knowing it is a VERIZON version.
I live in Israel so i had no idea what is the meaning of buying a device that will work only on Verizon network, we only have GSM here.
The guy i bought it from also had no idea what it means as his father bought it on the US and brought it here wishing to sell it as he had no use in it.
Without realizing the mistake I've made, I then made another one, Taking out the VERIZON SIM CARD and giving it back to the owner!
I thought to myself... well... that's his SIM CARD, not gonna be using that one...
Well, i got home to find out i'm in trouble with this deal I've made, i searched for a way to unlock it for GSM networks and i saw that here in XDA someone made it possible.
As i started working on it i had to download from Google play an application, when i was asked to pay for it i saw it's running on the old owners google account, so i decided i don't wanna pay with my credit while he might get the receipt for it and i figured i should do a Factory Data Reset for the phone and start from point zero the whole process.
Sadly i had no idea i'm doing another big mistake because when the phone finished the reset it asked for a VERIZON SIM CARD in order to run, well you know where that SIM Card is - back at the previous owner and i'm not even sure i will be able to track him down again.
I wish to get this device working without any traces of Verizon, maybe beside the name on the back panel of the device.
Now that the device won't even run without the SIM, what should i do ?
Thanks in advance,
Ohad.

Thanks but i was able to track down the previous owner and get the verizon sim card.
I found away to use it on GSM but still im very disappointed because im not sure there´s a real way to remove any trace for the verizon stuff installed here and there are few errors like it is connected to the provider but it says no verizon sim card connected.
and im not so sure all the device's frequencies are "open" for my provider.
I was wondering if there's any option to burn an international galaxy version to the device and it will bypass all of these issues.

not unless you want paperwieght for a device.
Why don't you just flash CM10 or similar to get rid of all the VZW stuff.... that's what I did.

Not sure how to do so, but either way i'm not sure i will get the device working completely normally with my local SIM card on a gsm network, without bugs, without asking me to put a verizon sim card all the time, without having any option to update the device...
I dunno, i thought i could easily get this Galaxy version to become unlocked completely and get it running like all the other guys around...
Unless anybody here have a good recommendation about what should i do to overcome the verizon and networks issues, maybe i should just sell this guy on ebay and get a normal version...
Do you think this would be a smart move to do ?
Beemer - after you flash the CM10, do you still need to unlock the device and do you still get issues running on other than Verizon providers or do you enjoy a device that is similar to the worldwide versions ?
Thanks,
Ohad.
If you flash an international ROM on a Verizon S3, your phone will no longer power on or do anything useful. That's why it will become a paperweight. Flashing an international ROM on your Verizon S3 is one of the easiest ways to make it useless.
International=quad-core us=s4 processor, very different guts.I'd listen to the ppl on this forum, unless you want to end up with a paper weight.

alright then... i won´t go for it.
but what about the other issues ? what do you guys recommend to do with the device ?
I'm thinking "get rid of it or get it working smoothly", the question is, is it possible to have it running "just like the unlocked international version" ?

Know it works on Touchwiz roms. It may not be in AOSP based roms.
Well, i flashed CM10 successfully, i was able to receive and send SMS before with the Stock ROM, and also to make/receive phone calls but i had sim card issues and errors and also some unwanted Verizon apps and stuff.
After updating the device to the latest Verizon version, i couldn't make phone calls, just receive and i could send and receive SMS.
Now that device runs much faster on the CM10 and i can make/receive phone calls but i can't send SMS.
*UPDATE: I have updated to the latest CM10 version, now i can't connect to the provider at all... no internet/phone/sms at all.
SOS
Ok, Im going to try a different tactic, i saw some people tried flashing At&t Roms on their verizon devices and they done it with success.
So far i tried doing it twice, one time with CM10 ROM for at&t, the 2nd time with stock at&t ROM.
I've tried doing it through CWM.
Both times i got an error while installing... it just didn't move on.
Luckly i had the CM10 for the verizon Zip file over there aswell so i installed that ROM again just to get the device running.
Any ideas how to flash the AT&T ROM on the Verizon Device ???

Unlocked t mobile and Verizon compatible questions.

Okay to be clear I know an unlocked T-Mobile phone will work on the Verizon network my question is if I use a Verizon sim card in a T-Mobile phone will I be able to use the tethering or mobile hotspot feature without it popping up I need to get a subscription from Verizon that has happened in the past with carrier specific phones it does not happen when you get a completely unlocked phone from Samsung so that is my question will I be able to use the mobile hotspot without it popping up I need to subscribe from Verizon so if you have that information I would love to hear it thank you
I guess you'll have to try it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, there are usually workaround tricks
