Does anyone know if it is possible to take an rooted, unlocked phone like a DINC on VZW and get it to run on a carrier with no data service?
I'm wondering if you could spoof the data being sent to the carrier to act as an older dumb phone and just use the phone on WiFi but still have voice/text?
Any ideas on this?
Sorry if it is a repost I tried to do searches but only found people asking about doing it through the carrier, not spoofing the data being sent.

After much searching I found lots of 'no you can't's, but I haven't found any posts that are recent, ...in the last 6 months.
I have a Sprint Touch Pro 2 that I successfully got working on Page Plus. I would like to get it on my folks' Verizon family plan. I called an agent and they said if it doesn't have a Verizon logo on it, it's not possible.
I question this, but I've found no one of late posting about this.
I think the phone will work on Verizon, it may just need the ESN number activated on their network.
I remember someone here or at PPCGeeks activated it for me on PagePlus, is there anyone/any way to activate it on Verizon?
I like the phone, I just don't need data, so I don't want a regular Verizon phone.
thanks,
Yes, you can get it activated on VZW... The only problem is this... you can't do it legally or ethically... It would involve doing things against VZW's rules as well as the law... and you would need a "broken" TP2 (or other VZW phone) to do it... But that aside... the reason it worked with PagePlus is because they allow outside phones on their network, with giving you the responsibility to make it work on their network.. VZW is vey explicit that they will NOT allow anyone elses phones on their network (same with Sprint)... They are the worse 2 when it comes to that IMO..... Sorry to the bad news.... But sometimes that is how it goes.... Maybe you can post an ad on here offering to trade someone yours for the VZW version.. or maybe Craigslist?
Thanks,
Trading for a verizon phone won't work, as then I'll have to get data.
My bottom line question:
I need a smart phone, but I NEVER need data, wifi is always available for me. But I guess there is no way to have an Android phone on a Verizon network, without a data plan?
Not legally anyways, that's one of the downsides to using CDMA, the carrier has much greater control over what kind of phone you use. Thankfully they can't control the Rom/OS you run on it .
You need a Verizon rep that knows what they're doing, it can be done.

Call T-Mobile (I assume that's the service you're using now) and they will tell you the APN settings.
Hi thanks,
i have done that but the phone keeps removing the APN, there is now no APN selected an im not sure what has happened as i am now getting mobile data.
Does anyone now how to get rid of the network operator logo on start up aswell?
Cheers
When I started shopping for a Xoom, I knew that getting one that would work on 3G/4G would get me advantages over the Wifi version. That's where my knowledge stopped.
Are there any advantages to having the CDMA/LTE capability, besides being able to get data outside of wifi areas?
Am I correct that the Xoom can NOT be used as a voice calling phone on the carrier's network (Verizon)?
I went with Xoom instead of the Nexus 7 because of the MicroSD card ability on the Xoom, and for it's 4G connectivity (even not knowing what that would get me ) Oh well, there is always more tech coming....
Your questions could really be answered by doing some searching around the forums... but:
I believe you are correct, no voice calling.
And yeah, when you buy into a mobile data plan, you can get data access anywhere the carrier has signal.
Are you planning on unlocking your bootloader and using custom ROMs?
This can be dangerous, there is a chance of bricking your device, so don't run into it without planning/researching. You may decide this route isn't for you.
IF your willing to mod your device, I believe there is way to allow your device to have access to SMS messaging (but not positive, I don't own one).
Some potential drawbacks though, if your not planning on rooting your device, it normally takes longer for the carrier branded ones to get OTA updates. Example: The wi-fi only Xoom is now getting its JellyBean update, but the Verizon branded ones are not. That update has to come through Verizon, instead of just through Google.
Hope that helps...
I have an HTC One X running ICS 4.1.1. I recently moved from AT&T to T-Mobile, and everything is working great except that I cannot enable the mobile hotspot function. When I try to enable it, I get the error "There is a temporary network problem that prevents the establishment of the Mobile Hotspot function"
Everything is provisioned correctly on the T-Mobile side, and the tech mentioned that AT&T disables the hotspot function at the handset level, Is this true, and is there any way to remove this restriction now that I am no longer with AT&T?

Yes this is true, and I don't think there's any way to remove it without root. However, I don't suggest rooting just to be able to tether since you could end up getting into even worse trouble without a proper understanding of what you're doing.

Unfortunately rooting is not an option since I mistakenly let my phone take the OTA update to 4.1.1... Oops.. Do you happen to know how AT&T makes that change on the handset? If I knew the method that they used, I may be able to get AT&T to remove the restriction if I can get the right tech on the phone...

They cannot remove it. It's a file stored on your phone that has been edited. without root access, it cannot be changed.
Okay to be clear I know an unlocked T-Mobile phone will work on the Verizon network my question is if I use a Verizon sim card in a T-Mobile phone will I be able to use the tethering or mobile hotspot feature without it popping up I need to get a subscription from Verizon that has happened in the past with carrier specific phones it does not happen when you get a completely unlocked phone from Samsung so that is my question will I be able to use the mobile hotspot without it popping up I need to subscribe from Verizon so if you have that information I would love to hear it thank you
I guess you'll have to try it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, there are usually workaround tricks
