[Q] USB Debugging not working - General Questions and Answers

When I try to allow it I get this popup which does nothing when clicked, the setting is checked after this but no new device connects to my pc, nor do I get a prompt to allow debugging.
Debugging works just fine when in recovery.

Do what the popup says :|

The thing is that I have never installed any Antivirus apps.
The only thing I did install was Perfect App Protector which I've since removed and rebooted the phone several times.

Maybe the app you says.. Make a blocking..

[Q] Rooted phone still saying that apps can not be installed

So am i missing out on something? I tried downloading an app off web browser and it says that i can not download apps that arent on market. I thought that was what super permission took care of? Any help guys?
Rooting doesn't enable sideloading of apps, it just gives you root access to the phone. Look for the thread called "[How To] Enable Non-Market apps on Captivate (consolidated)" in order to enable sideloading from the phone itself.
There are also a few programs that will let you sideload from your computer, such as Droid Explorer or the Android Central Sideload Wonder machine. Or you can use adb to install. This question seems to get asked way too often.
Root doesn't allow you to install non-Market apps, you need to do a little more hacking. Read the wiki! I'd post a link but I can't since I'm still a "new" user on here...
Ok thanks. Just switched over from iphone to the caltivate so im still new to.this. Thanks

are you sure? Every android device ive ever seen or delt with has this standard setting... Ill take your word for it though as I got a vibrant not a captivate, although I dont see why they would differ. Anyways the Astro file manager should work even without the other thing checked right?
Just find it wierd that yall dont have that setting when every other android device does...
Please see the "[How To] Enable Non-Market Apps on Captivate (Consolidated)" howto in the Dev section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376
As for why we don't actually have the ability to flip the "unknown sources" setting... Yeah, ATT had Sammy take it completely out of the stock roms.

[Q] ICS Official: No Device Administrator Settings

Hi,
Is this a known issue on Android 4.03 Official?
I can't uninstall an app, because I can't disable its administrator privileges. These settings are gone after applying the FOTA!
Not noticed it but I did a factory reset after getting the update

Thanks. I didn't. Interesting. Can anyone else confirm/reject this please?
Nope, i can just remove apps and everything. Didn't do a factory reset after OTA update.

Factory reset was the solution indeed!
Where's My Droid is the problem
I noticed after installing Where's My Droid and granting it Device Administration privileges, the option itself disappeared from the Security menu of my phone, along with Unknown Sources option. WTF - I reset my phone over a dozen times (literally) before I realized what caused it to keep disappearing. There's no telling how many apps out there that might cause these options to disappear after being added as a Device Administrator. So please, test my conclusion...reset your phone and if the options reappear, try installing the app that caused the options to disappear (most likely a security app or phone locator app) then grant it Device Admin again and see what happens. If I'm right, please hit the thank you button. Peace!!
I don't see this menu even I did factory reset+wipe data in stock recovery ... I've tried to check it on clean phone without any application installed and it is not there - just setting for "Unknown sources" but not Device administrators ..

Me either until you install an app like Where's My Droid, then go to the Security section of WMD> Remote Wipe or Remote Lock. DO NOT 'SET DEVICE ADMIN' but this should put the option in the Settings>Security menu of the phone. but after uninstalling WMD it goes away. maybe you can make use of it for programs that need device admin privleges while WMD is installed, hopefully it dosen't disappear if you authorize a different app, then hopefully uninstalling WMD wont remove the option if a different app already has admin rights. Are you pickin up what I'm layin down? I know it sounds crazy, thumbs down ICS

You have found the root cause of this "problem".. It is not a bug it is feature
That did it for me, too!
Just to confirm, I found a small app on the Play Store that wanted Device Admin rights (an app called "Lock Screen" which just provides a button to lock the device), went in to it's settings, enabled Device Admin rights and then the 3rd Party Apps and Device Administrator settings appeared in the Security Settings. Thank you!

How To: Disable System Updates and OTAs

This is a guide to disable/block the System Update and OTA firmware updates that are automatically pushed to your device by your Carrier.
Guide is meant for those that have NON-Rooted phones. If you have a T-mobile variant, you can do all this through other methods.
If you do have Root, there are many apps you can use to "freeze/disable" the OTA apps directly from the phone. (TiBu=Titanium Backup, ROM Toolbox, and many many more in the Play Store)
I think a few people were interested in knowing how this works. Yes, there are other guides out there that would tell you how to do this exact same thing in a general sense or for another device.
This is meant to be short, sweet, and simple. To the point:
DOWNLOADS
(installing everything listed below to their default locations will suffice)You need to download and install the USB drivers for your V10. This is a link to the drivers for Windows: http://oceanhost.eu/x1b0tjlhzw1z/LGUnitedMobileDriver_S51MAN313AP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_3.13.2.exe.htm
If you have a VERIZON V10, use this USB driver instead: http://oceanhost.eu/vqrpi5norzp0/LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.20.0.exe.htm
-------------If neither of those driver packages work for you, try this one out: http://tool.xcdn.gdms.lge.com/dn/downloader.dev?fileKey=UW00120120425
Now, make sure you have ADB installed on your computer. Instead of downloading a huge package, you can just download this small installer instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
Just read though that first post if you are setting up ADB for the 1st time. Download the latest version posted there and install it.
And now you need to download the Debloater program. Here is the link to gatesjunior tool that will allow you to perform magic on your Un_Rooted V10: http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...er-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294#post58069093
That's a long post to read, I know. Just scroll to the bottom of that 1st post and look for the links under "Full Download"
Pick one of the two links, download it, install it. Now you have the Debloater Tool setup and ready to use.
After you have installed everything you need, move on to Step 1)
1) You need to enable ADB on your device before you can use this method. (If you have ADB enabled already, just move on to Step 2)
- To do that, you need to go to SETTINGS --> ABOUT PHONE --> SOFTWARE INFO. Tap on "Build Number" about 10 times till it says "You are a developer now".
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
View attachment 3603975 View attachment 3603976
- Back out of SOFTWARE INFO, then back out of ABOUT PHONE. You are now back in the SETTINGS menu.
- Directly above ABOUT PHONE, you should see DEVELOPER OPTIONS. Click on it and open that menu.
- Click the toggle at the top and turn ON Developer Options.
- In DEVELOPER OPTIONS you will see "USB Debugging" check that box and hit OK on the pop up window. Now ADB is enabled.
View attachment 3603977
2) Time to connect your phone to your PC. If this is the first time, give it a few mins to setup everything and install the drivers.
Notice: When you plug in your device to your PC (after all drivers have been installed), the phone automatically connects as USB INSTALLER. Give it about 20secs and the device will disconnect and then reconnect as "Media Sync (MTP)"
- Connect your phone to your PC. Wait till it disconnects and reconnects as MTP
3) After your phone is connected as MTP, open the Debloater program.
- If this is the first time you have ever used ADB, you will get a pop up on your phone screen that looks like the pic below
- Check the box and then hit OK
4) After your phone has connected, the program will throw a pop up about "Your device does NOT support block mode". Just ignore it and hit OK.
- Now click on the top left botton "Read Device Packages"
- Wait for a min or two for the program to finish reading all the apps installed on your phone.
- You should see a screen like this
View attachment 3603992
5) Now we are going to disable the packages/apps that download OTAs and Updates to your phone.
- 1st one is LGFOTA. Check the [_] filter box next to the "UnBlock All Packages" button. Type "OTA" and it will narrow down to one result. Simply check the box next to LGFOTA.apk and click the "APPLY" button on the upper left.
View attachment 3603993
- Repeat step 4 again --> let it finish --> check the [_] filter box --> type "DMS" --> check the box --> click "APPLY"
View attachment 3603994
- Repeat step 4 again --> let it finish --> check the [_] filter box --> type "DMW" --> check the box --> click "APPLY"
View attachment 3603995
6) Reboot your phone
That's it! All done. No more pesky Update nagging.
To confirm that the app has been disabled, goto your SETTINGS menu --> scroll to the bottom --> see if System Update is listed above ABOUT PHONE.
If it is gone, you are good.
System Update may still show up in SETTINGS --> APPLICATION MANAGER --> (ALL tab) --> SYSTEM UPDATES
You will notice that there is no Date listed on the right side like there is for the apps above and below it. That shows that it is Disabled. So again, you are good.
View attachment 3608549
There are other things (pre-installed carrier bloatware) you could diable with the Debloater program as well. That is beyond the purpose of this tutorial.
Be careful what else you disable with the Debloater program
Disable the wrong app and you might cause system stability issues or even cause your device to not boot. Just a word of caution.
If anyone has another variant of the V10 that has a package name varying from the ones in this tutorial, please comment below so I can add it. I have a Verizon V10, so the package names might vary a bit.
Use an app on the Play Store called "Package Name Viewer" by csing to look up the package names for your System Update apps.

Hope this helped you out. Just passing around what I know. Enjoy your V10's !!!
Thanks for contributing this awesome tutorial brother.

Make sure you downloaded the right version. Here is the exact link to the one I DL'd last night: http://rootjunkysdl.com/getdownload.php?file=Gates/DeBloater/Debloater-setup-v3.90.exe
Uninstall the old one first, then reinstall it. I have a suspicion that you downloaded the Debloater Update instead of the full program. Maybe not, just an itch.
If that doesn't work, try right clicking on the icon and run it as an Administrator.
If that wont do it, try a different PC? Narrow down if you are having driver conflicts with a particular machine.

I tried another PC, same issue. I tried to look at my device via CMD ADB devices, still cant see it. My phone says its connected via ADB Debugging, but is not asking permission to connect that way. No phone prompt.
Do this for me. --------------v v v v v v---------------- Make sure you unplug your phone from the PC first.
Go to SETTINGS --> DEVELOPER OPTIONS --> click on "Revoke USB debugging authorizations" (right below the "USB Debugging" check box)
Now plug it back in. You should get the pop up on your phone screen when ADB makes connection. MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE BOX THIS TIME OR YOU WILL RUN INTO THIS AGAIN

Thanks. Seemed to work perfect for me. Only had to 'Apply' the block to two files as I did the one through the app manager. Thanks!
Edit: i rebooted and after all three of those apps show disabled in 'Debloater' I still have 'System updates' in my application manager under 'All'
its 428kb version 1_15_02_0.
allows the option to force stop, but not disable.
Is this normal?

I addressed this in the OP. If the date is still there, then you did not disable it. Run the Debloater again, re-enable, then disable that app again.
Maybe enable it, go to the app in SETTINGS and "Clear data" before you disable it again. Data amount in the app after clearing it is 220kb for me.

Thank you for posting. I suspected that it was the driver package that was causing issues. I will ad that link in the OP for others.
As a note, there does not seem to be any specific drivers for the V10 on LG's site the last time I looked. Very weird :/
Can this be undone? Right now I want to block updates because I'm waiting for possible root. However root may prove impossible and I might want to be able to download OTA's someday. Can this process be undone (without fully wiping and restoring phone)?

Absolutely :laugh: Simply do the reverse of what you did with the Debloater tool.
Checked boxes next to the app name means DISABLED. Just uncheck the box next to the app and hit "Apply".

Tried that. Re-enabled all 3. then went in to system apps.
Clear data was greyed out, I did clear the cache on the 420kb 'System Updates" App.
Then, rebooted and went through the process to disable all 3 apps (OTA, DMS, DMW) -> reboot
both 'System Updates" apps were still showing up. I dissabled the 0.00kb app but the other one is now showing 432kb and only allows 'Force Close'
Anyone else on Verizon having the same problem?
Thanks again.

When you say they show up, are the dates next to the right of the App name in ALL tab of APP SETTINGS? Check the OP. I added a screenshot of what I am trying to explain.
If the apps are not disabling, that is very strange. First I have heard of I think.
Hate to say this, but... if the Apps wont disable, you might have to do a Factory Reset and try to disable them ASAP. This is not the best solution obviously.

Crap. I owe you an apology. There is no date next to the 'System Updates' app. so it has been disabled. sorry for that. Thanks again for the great tutorial.
Thanks for the great tutorial! Had to play around with drivers, revoking debugging, etc... But between this OP and those in the links you had, all my questions were answered and I've gotten rid of the annoying system update nagging.
Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
So with some fooling with the drivers I was able to disable the OTA updates. Awesome! Thank you. Anyone had any luck with disabling any other Verizon bloat?

May be you can consider flashing back the Stock ROM and have your VR installed first then do the rooting again.

Somehow i am glad to hear that i am not the only one with that Problem.
Did you play around with the dpi?
I read another thread on Oculus community forum... this issue occurred before even on other phones...
some says it could be coming from Oculus servers.
I tried to logcat the app ID 10072 that tried to read the DNS before displaying the network error.
also tried...
to fully reset the device
to run the app with/without Sim card,
with a VPN
deleting cache...
no luck so far
I read that the Facebook app has to be installed or enabled can someone confirm this ? and try to log in and launch the setup wizard ?
if don't have a Facebook account.

How do I turn on App Manager and Installer ?
To turn on the App Manager and Installer, tap on the "Settings" application, then "Applications" and finally "Application manager". Make sure you have chosen the "All" category and find the following applications:
com.facebook.appmanager (App Manager)
com.facebook.system (Installer)
Tap into each and make sure they are enabled.
Unable to find com.facebook.system
If you are on Android OS 6.0 (Marshmallow), com.facebook.system may not be visible. Please try the following steps:
1. Navigate to Settings
2. Tap on Application Manager
3. Tap the More menu in the upper right corner
4. Tap Show System Apps
5. This will make com.facebook.system visible and allow you to enable it.
The App Manager and the Installer must be enabled before Gear VR apps can be installed and updated on your mobile phone.

"Unknown sources" missing on Oreo

Hi, since the Oreo update I can't find the "Unknown sources" to install APK's freely. I'ts not under "Lock Screen and Security", and I have enabled Chrome in "Applications/Special Access/Install other apps" and I'm trying to install apps from the "Downloads" section of chrome, but it dosn't work this way either.
I was trying to install the Pixel Launcher as seen from here: https://theunlockr.com/2018/03/13/make-samsung-galaxy-s9-look-like-stock-android/
But everytime I try it I get the "<!> Application not installed".
I don't know exactly what says in english, I'm using my phone in spanish.
Any ideas? Thanks!
If you go to Settings-Apps-3 Dots-Special Access-Install Unknown Apps.
They've moved it so only certain apps can install unknown apps
Please help how to fix this problem. This doesn't work, I tried installing Accuweather pro several times. I have the app saved to my Google Drive, I click on the app and I see something called 'Staging App' and then I get this alert ' There was a problem parsing the package'. I currently had an older version of Accuweather pro installed and working fine. I decided to remove the old version and then reinstall it and I received the same alert. FYI the old Accuweather app was installed before the Oreo update.

Have you tried downloading your APP file from Google Drive to your phone then opening the copy on your phone, that should install the .apk
Go to settings on the phone >> apps >> 3 vertical dots at the top right corner >> special access >> install unknown apps >> and there enable the permission from where you are trying to download it.
All thank you,
I found out that you now have to download the app to your phone. Google Drive does not allow you to download and manually install .
Dear sir/madam,
Following your answer, in specific this part, "They've moved it so only certain apps can install unknown apps", perhaps someone could help me out. I use the Firefox Focus browser and this app doesn't show up in the list of apps that are allowed to install unknown apps.
* Does this mean Firefox Focus can't install apps from unknown apps, since it's not on the list?
* And perhaps we can conclude from that it will never be allowed to do so?
* Or would this app not be on this list, because I've never tried installing anything using this browser?
I guess the real question would be, what populates this list?
I hope to hear from you, thanks in advance, all the best.
Form what I've seen, 1st time you try to install apk from an app it asks you if you want to allow it?

That's what I was thinking as well, funny thing is that 'Google Chrome' is in the list and I've never used that browser. Unless it's there, because it's from Google
I have followed the above suggestions and have allowed Chrome to install apps since that's the browser I'm using. The phone says I have downloaded the app but it is not giving me any option to install it? Where did the download go and how can I get it actually installed? This is an app for work.
Edit: Nevermind - I restarted the phone and tried again and it worked. thanks.
