Google Search Background Data Consumption? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone see this issue? Google Search should include Google Now right? Why is it using this much background data?
I get that updating my sports scores, traffic info and weather is being done in the background, but what the hell is taking up 200mb+ of data?
I cleared data today and will observe what happens the next few days.

Updating all of those things consumes data, that's exactly what's using your data.

200mb of data? Are you guys seeing that much background data use? I mean that's a bit ridiculous don't you think?

How is that ridiculous? That's 13mb background data per day judging by your screenshot.

AT&T Data usage app/widget?

when i saw the SKyrocket in the AT&T store i swear i saw an app or widget that stated your data usage in a bar graph of some type.
all i see right now on my phone is the My AT&T app which lets me login to my account and see the DATA tab but thats it.
am i incorrect in thinking i saw a widget of some sort that showed your data usage and a pre defined cap you could put for warnings?

3G watchdog. I have been using it and it's fairly accurate to atts site when I check.
I use an app called Traffic Monitor that I would recommend, it's free on the market. Has a nice widget that differentiates wifi usage vs data usage, and the app will breakdown what apps use bandwidth and how much.

+1 its a must have for me.
I use my data manager, works well for me and it has a nice widget and stays in the notification pull down.

I know what you are talking about I think it. I have it on my tab 8.9. I can find out the exact name and apk when I get home. It is linked to your att account and has day's left on billing cycle and data used.

well maybe someone downloaded one of those apps onto the skyrocket phone i saw on display since no one has mentioend an official AT&T widget.
thanks guys and i tried traffic monitor and it was great and detailed BUT i really like the Data manager interface more. its simple and you can actually input your billing date and how much data you have used up until now which is great.
love the widget as well.

Google Play Music

curious to see if anyone else uses the Google Play Music app, and if so, if the updates erase your cache music? this has happened to me twice already whereby I updated the app via the market, and then when I open the app, all of my songs are gone. I have to re-cache them again
Yep. Last update wiped them all. PITA!

Same thing happens to me. I usually plan on bouncing on wifi after updating to download whatever items I want cached. :good:
I just stream them. Unlimited data for the win.

Company plan. Thanks for rubbing it in.

Before the pre cached maps went final (out of labs) updating maps did the same thing to those. I think it's just Google trying to avoid any potential problems.

[Q] how much data can Android OS eat?

My data stats show that "android OS" consumed about 200 mb? Is this normal? I mean, i don.t care about costs, but could a malicious app use kernel for transmiting my personal data to a third party site?
Is it possible?
Tjank you

Nobody can exactly say the data consumed by their android.
But 200 mb in your case is very higher. That may not be by the os only,
See is there any download or any app(s) running at background.
So stop all the apps in seetings>app manager and see the consumption again.

200 mb is never ok for your os to consume see if an update occured in that month ! My android os usage is 30 mb.

Aloha there...
Head over to f-droid.org and install networklog, root required thought. It gives a very detailed report about network traffic.
Happy network loggin...
Android FOSS repository https://f-droid.org/
I searched and remembered that i was having sync on, so that could be an explanation.
Thank you for your responses

to prevent consuming too much data you could install "3G Watchdog app" it monitors your data every minute and send a notification (plus vibration) if you exceed your traffic data limit
The sync-on triggered that much data usage by your OS.
Its normally around 40 to 60 mbs approx.

[Q] RealCalc background data

I just noticed that the RealCalc app has used 132MB of background data in the past month (wifi only). Why would a calculator use ANY background data let alone 132MB? This seems really suspicious.
Since this shows up as backgound data only on Wifi I don't expect that restricting backgound data will make any difference since that only applies to mobile data.
Any ideas?
That's odd. I've got it installed as well, and it doesn't even show up in my data usage..
Clear data and cache for it, then uninstall it & reinstall it.

Thanks. Have done that and hopefully it will fix the problem. Only other thing I can think of is that the data usage log got a bit confused when I installed a new ROM recently and is reporting incorrect usage.
I'm not the first one to see this though:
"...Be warned though, I found RealCalc using a lot of background data a few months ago (~100mb). If you know how to turn off an app’s ability to use background data, I highly suggest doing that with this one." - http://upfromhere.net/2014/04/must-replacement-apps-android/

Since reinstalling it hasn't shown up on the data usage list again but thanks, I'll keep this in mind for other apps.

Can I block mobile data for everything except one specific app?

Hiya,
My question is the title.
I am using a device with Android 8.0.0
I want to allow only one single specific app use of mobile data. Any other app and unnecessary process that does not help that app to do Internet working want to strictly block, no background data no nothing.
Is this possible? How do I do this? I need to make sure it is implemented as strictly as possible and that it works in real life.
Thanks!

I'm not sure that is completely possible other than restricting background data and then, if you have root, using something like Greenify or a similar app to freeze the apps of your choice.
NOTE:
You will not be able to restrict data to the important system apps that are required for the device's basic function, such as Google Play Services and other apps that are deeply a part of the system. If you try cutting them off, your device will not function properly, it will cause system apps to constantly crash/force close and/or cause a bootloop the next time you boot your device.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to help me so far. I respect that.
By restricting background data, do you mean to turn on "Data Saver"?

No, I mean, go to system settings>apps.
Then choose an app that you want to restrict, tap on that app on the list of applications in settings, then you should the app's info page with a list of options, tap on the one that says data usage, then you should see the option to restrict background data for that app.
You'll have to do that for each app that you want to restrict.
But, the "restrict background data" setting does not completely block it from using data, that's why I suggested that your device be rooted so you can use something like Greenify to freeze your apps, then they won't even be running, which means they won't use any data while frozen.

I have been using Greenify without root.
Is there any advantage(s) to using Greenify with root?
Thanks again.

Yes, it can do much more with root, honestly, it's almost pointless to use Greenify without root. It was built for the purpose of using root.
