I'm still on an unlimited plan that gets charged $30 per month for wifi tethering. Can someone confirm if the OPO will work with FoxFi for wifi tethering? If not, is there a rooted wifi tether app that will keep me from paying the $30/month? This is the one thing I HAVE to have in my next phone. Thanks!
In my unpopular opinion, you should live up to the plan you signed up for.
Then there is this in the site rules:

Actually, I am. Except for the built in Verizon Wifi Tether app, any and all wifi tether apps that allow free wifi tethering is absolutely legal with Verizon. The FCC mandated it. The only problem is, FoxFi is the only app I've found that actually does so and there are only a few phones that it supports, and the OPO is not one of them.
The OnePlus One is GSM only and doesn't work on Verizon's CDMA network. It also doesn't require FoxFi because wifi tether is built into AOSP Android, hence CM11s. Ditch Verizon and you'll be fine.
Thanks! I didn't know that! What a bummer!

just search this forum for the HTC WiFi router app. i used to use PDANet for tethering but this is SO much easier and more reliable. it basically turns your phone into a wifi hotspot so anyone close can use tap into it with a wifi enabled device. and there are security codes too so you dont have to worry about anyone you dont want accessing it getting in. hope this helps.
Hey guys,
I am from the Captivate forums and I was wondering if the roms for the droid charge have usb tethering and mobile hotpsot enabled out of the box with the current custom roms. I know Verizon is providing their mobile hotspot capabilities for a short term but I would really like to get some tethered 4G speeds without having to pay for separate hotspot capabilities.
I'm running GummyCharged 1.8.1 with the pbj lagfix kernel, and while there is not exactly a built in tethering app I was able to easily install PdaNet for usb tethering. I also downloaded Open Garden WiFi for my mobile hotspot alternative app which seems to work well. Verizon's built in tethering garbage is just plain ridiculously overpriced.

You thinking about jumping from att to verizon for the LTE lock in? That's exactly what I'm planning on doing either today or tomorrow. Don't you just love how easy it is to usb or wireless tether with our Captivates and custom roms?!
To USB tether, you can purchase EZ Tether (~ $10USD), or you can root and run this free app: Google Code Wired Tether
For Wireless Tethering, it's a little trickier - mostly because of the Wifi Access Point / Ad Hoc connection issue. I have heard that if you download this free app: Google Code Wifi Tether, and configure for the Samsung Fascinate, it will work fine. Haven't tested it yet, though.
Cheers,

Yeah that is exactly what I feel like doing, but I will probably keep my Captivate activated just in case because I still have AT&ts unlimited data plan. Yeah that is the reason I was asking becasue everything is baked into our custom roms and they inlcude all of the mods anyone could ever ask for.
I would never pay a seperate fee for wireless tethering to any wireless carrier especially if I already am paying for the data plan. Wireless providers are just too greedy at times *cough*tiered data plans*cough*
Thanks for the responses guys. I hope the custom roms on this phone one day are up to par with what I have come to expect from the Captivate forums.
Also I read that Verizon has been cracking down on wireless accounts that use third party tethering apps. Can anyone confirm this or point me to a reliable source?

Hey, if you get a chance, can you shoot me a PM. I got a couple questions for you and I think I can't send PMs or something.
everything is about to change. On July 7th est, there is be tiered data plans for verizon. 2gb for 29.99, 5 gb for 50 and 10 gb 80. So if your not already on the unlimited than you will not have unlimited more. sucky

I am running GummyCharged 1.8.1. I installed the wired_tether_1_4.apk, ran it, accepted root permission, but got the "Unsupported Kernel" popup. The adp-1_6-kernel-update_usbtether_r3.zip will not install as clockwork states it is outdated.
Is there a fix to get android-wired-tether working on the charge? I know pdanet/easytether/klink work, but are paid apps.
Thanks
@mrxhack - You are correct. I forgot that the SamChg won't run on the Google Code Wired Tether app. I like EasyTether, though - It works great, and doesn't cost too much. Try the free version first, to see if it works well with GC.
Ok - so i have a Rooted MTS3G with CyanogenMod7 and tethering with easy-tether & pdanet is FREE (i dont pay for it).....
Im ready to take the plunge and upgrade to the MTS4G (4G slide) -- but want to make sure that im not going to get charged by tmobile for using these two apps to tether. I refuse to pay tmobile for tethering when i have unlimited data....
What steps to i need to do this - obviously i will need to root the new 4G slide but -- just want to be guaranteed i wont be charged - as i frequently use tethering. I know there is no cyanogenmod7 for MTS4G - i was planning on using undead's rom so i still have full camera functionality. Is there any other thing that i need to take into account regarding the tethering issue?
No.
The only way you'd ever get charged is by using the official T-Mobile app, that requires the monthly activation fee to use.
Now, having said that, I know that on other carriers people using rooted tethering apps have gotten nasty calls/notices from the carrier saying something like "we notice you're using a lot of data, it appears that you are tethering, please pay us." But there is no way for them to actually know that tethering is happening.
If you root, and use 3rd party, or android, wifi tethering apps, you are in the clear.

I wouldn't go *that* far -- they would just have a heckuva time trying to PROVE it should you dispute their assertion.
cool, thanks for the heads up. was reviewing tmobile site and they charge extra for tethering and i didnt want that, but know that they (tmobile) is aware people are trying to circumvent paying for tethering so wanted to see if i needed special ROM or if like you said - that i just should use 3rd party apps on my MTS4G. Just dont need drama, as i tether a lot - (mostly via usb). But thanks both of you for the info

There are a number of ways to look for tethering. Something as simple as checking the browser header ID sent over unencrypted sessions and seeing if it matches a desktop browser would work. If your provider wants to monitor if you are tethering, they can unless you use a vpn.
Also, you seem to believe that they need to prove anything to you. They are free, per the contract you sign when you start service, to monitor their network for anything they deem "excessive impacting usage" and terminate your service at will. T-Mobile is the only US carrier that currently doesn't enforce a tethering plan to tether.

That's the key word -- excessive. As long as people keep it reasonable it shouldn't be a problem.
If someone is looking for a "I don't want to get caught at all or get in trouble" then the answer is don't tether -- carrier forbids it.
But practically speaking, it's very low risk if you root, use a non-TMO tether app, and don't abuse.
Did anyone else see the FCC ruling last July? A quick google search will bring up several articles about how verizon is not allowed to charge for tethering.
This does not seem to apply to their current plans. Even they are allowed to say that you need to be at a certain level plan, the 4GB tether plan is the same price as the 5GB plan (ie tethering cost $10)
If you're still on one of the old tiered plans, you can tether at no extra cost. Family Share plans are excluded, most likely something in the fine print that you "accept" when you get your contract.
I am still on the old tiered plan.
The way the settlement was worded, they cant use fine print to get around it. The reason for the suit is that LTE is on the new Block C, which has open source type requirements
Got a good answer from Verizon
Dear Matthew,
Good morning! My name is Kay and I am here to help you regarding the tethering service.
The FCC ruling did not say that Verizon Wireless cannot charge for tethering service. The ruling prohibited Verizon Wireless from blocking you from using a third party application to tether or share your data connection. You can download a third party application from the Play Store and tether at no charge. You can also use our tethering service at the applicable fee.
I trust that this resolves your issue. Thank you for being a valued Verizon Wireless customer and have a great day!
Sincerely,
Kay

So you can do it for free or pay Verizon? Hmmm I wonder how many pay Verizon?
From what I've read, you can use any app to share the connection but they can still charge you. The ruling prohibited them from blocking third party apps from sharing.
See...Verizon doesn't exactly fall into the C block verbage. It is a colossal mess. This was brought up like crazy when it happened. They were excluded I just forget why.

My understanding is that if you are paying for an amount of data, like 5gb, then they cannot charge you. It's your data and how you use it is your business.
However unlimited data was still able to be charged for tethering because it allows you to use more of their bandwidth that you wouldn't have otherwise used.
But I am no expert so feel free to correct me.

grandfathered unlimited, tethered for years. never paid for it.
Wait so you guys are saying that the data used during tethering can't be charged or the ACT of tethering can't be charged?

Yes, why is this thread even here. There are countless ways to tether for free. No-one has ever been charged for doing so.

Hi everyone. I have an issue with my unlocked AT&T HTC One X. It's unlocked in the sense that I am using a T-Mobile plan and SIM. I found out recently that the bootloader was not unlocked and it was not rooted so I rooted and unlocked the bootloader last night. The only thing I'm yet to do is S-off. The problem I'm having is that I can't tether even though I am getting data using an APN setting T-Mobile gave me. I rooted mainly to be able to tether the data plan so it's kind of frustrating. I was however able to use the clockworkmod tether and it works, however, that is a USB tether. I've tried several wireless tether apps that don't seem to work. Help will really be appreciated. Thanks.
This seems to be a popular topic lately (WiFi hotspot not working on stock AT&T ROM).
The bootloader is not the problem. The issue is that the stock AT&T ROM intentionally blocks the use of tethering and WiFi hotspot unless you pay for an AT&T tethering enabled plan. Of course, since you are not on AT&T, that isn't possible.
Since you are already bootloader unlocked, IMO the best solution is to install TWRP custom recovery (if you haven't already) and just install any stock rooted or custom ROM that is not AT&T based. Any stock or custom Sense ROM has the stock HTC WiFi hotspot fully functional.
As redpoint said just install TWRP and install a custom Sense ROM. You'll find detailed instructions in my How-To Guide For Beginners thread, link in my signature.

Arrrrrrrgh! Pirates we be!
Anyway, does anyone actually know anything concerning the legality of tethering without and "official" tethering plan? Is there really a law or do they just cling to their software blocks assuming most people aren't awesome like us?
Feels like I recall a "threatening" email from att regarding my excessive data usage
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk
I highly doubt there's a specific law as such, but it's within your contract with at&t and you're technically obliged to abide by the terms and conditions within the contract.
I personally think it's criminal of the north American carriers to do that, there's no way you'd catch an Australian carrier trying that.

I assume you are referring to AT&T blocking or allowing the use of tethering (the OP of this thread is not on AT&T).
There doesn't need to be a law for this, its not like AT&T will have you thrown in jail or sue you. But its their network, and they get to decide how its used. Read the terms of service you agreed to when you signed up for service, and you will see that it specifically addresses tethering, and that you need to have a tethering data plan in order to do so. Violate these terms, and AT&T has the right to add a tethering plan to your account, or terminate your account.
They can tell on the network end that you are tethering. Enforcement is not 100%, and nobody except probably AT&T themselves knows how they enforce. But its likely that if your tethering is high volume and frequent, you will be caught. The first violation they give a warning (forget if it comes by text, email, or snail mail). Second time you are caught, they will add a tethering plan to your account.
I tether very infrequently, but sometimes use it to just download/upload work email when I am travelling and working in a location that does not have internet connectivity. I've been doing this for years, and have never been caught. But my tethering usage is quite low. Also, their detection is likely not related to my non-tethering usage, as I've often used 3 to 4 GB a month non-tethering (on an unlimited data plan). So they are not looking exclusively for high usage, but rather a combination of behaviors.
Bottom line, stay off the radar and you can tether occasionally. Tether frequently and high volume, and you will get caught, its just a matter of time. And if you are a pirate, you know how to stay off the radar, right?

Lol no peer block won't work. They can just tell but it seems with the unlimited data plans gone tethering isn't to big an issue. A lot of plans come with it now and if you are using up data its a win win for them. What's jacked is some other carriers block you using your PC internet via USB to device. Its kinda crazy cause its really the same as WiFi lol.
