So stock cm11s is too buggy for me .. - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
the ghost gestures bug is getting too out of hand on my OPO so i am thinking of flashing a ROM
all i want is a stable ROM with as little bugs as possible
i am thinking PA with franco
but is PA the more stable ROM out there?
and about flashing
1. root and unlock the bootloader on my OPO ( with toolkit )
2.make a backup with TWRP or CWM
3.wipe the phone , cache etc
4 flash the ROM ,kernel and GAPPS in the recovery
5.wipe the phone again
5. reboot
6.done?

I recommend SlimKat.

I recommend NOT using a toolkit
Sent from my A0001 using XDA Free mobile app

Don't use a toolkit, that's the most important piece of advice active can give you. Toolkits are way too buggy and often cause more problems than they're worth. They also allow you to perform operations without actually knowing what you're doing, this is a bad idea. Learn how to use fastboot, never underestimate the value of having firm understanding of what you're doing when modifying your phone, you're definitely gonna need that knowledge when something goes wrong in future. The steps should be as follows:
Unlock your bootloader.
Install TWRP.
Make a backup.
Full wipe (system, date, cache, dalvik cache).
Install ROM.
Reboot.

{Help} Installing a ROM - Already Rooted

Hey Guys Sorry I am New Here But I rooted My Phone And I wanted to install a rom Cyan engine mod thru rom manager and When i did I soft Bricked My phone In the verizon yellow screen But then i rooted it to The stock rom but i am still rooted some how , How do i get a new rom ?
Download a rom of your choice from one of the sgs3 development threads, copy it to your ext sd card, reboot into recovery, wipe phone, clear caches, install rom, install happened (if needed), wipe caches, reboot, let sit.
Thaw the jist of it. If you need a more detailed version, there are threads that walk you through it.

Are you unlocked and have a custom recovery?
If you want to install a ROM you have to first download the correct ROM for whatever phone you have and put it where you won't forget it. Then you need to go into recovery mode and do a factory data reset then wipe your cache and last you need to wipe your dalvik cache which is found in the advanced options. Then you click install zip and the you find the ROM and install it. If it has the aroma installer just follow the instructions given. After that just restart your phone. The first time you boot up your phone takes a minute so don't get worried.

You mentioned that you are rooted, but have you also flashed a custom recovery? The easiest way to flash custom ROMs, at least in my experience, is definitely through the use of recovery.
Once the recovery is installed, simply download the ROM in .zip format, move it over to your phone's SD card, then flash away. The steps vary a little, but for CWM, the steps are generally:
Wipe data;
Wipe cache;
Wipe Dalvik;
Flash ROM;
Flash gapps;
At this point, I usually wipe the cache and Dalvik again; redundant, yes, but eh.
There are other ways too, but I am only familiar with this method. I imagine you could always flash ROMs via Odin, but I feel like that would be a lot more complicated for a newer user.

Forgot; also ensure that your boot loader is unlocked. There is actually an app for it in the Play Store. Search for VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock on the forums. It's also on the Play Store, but I can't seem to find a link anywhere. Pretty much all you have to do is click "Unlock," and you'll be good to go.
MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS PRIOR TO FLASHING ANYTHING. You mentioned you were stuck at the Yellow Triangle in your post. One of the reasons for this includes forgetting to unlock your bootloader prior to flashing custom firmware (AKA Cyanogen Mod).
Make sure you unlock your bootloader. Download EZ Unlocker
^ make sure you have downloaded ez unlock first and then grab the latest recovery

I just installed the new synergy rom latest version and it works pretty flawlessly except I cant turn my wifi on...this is a bother indeed. Any ideas jow to my that work cuz other than that one glitch it is amazing.

Re-flashing CyanogenMod/ClockworkMod?

Hello,
I flashed one of the CM 10.1 that I found on CM website, and then I flashed GAPPS, but the version I downloaded has some bugs, so I want to choose a different CM version, but I don't know how to. I mean, what will happen with GAPPS? Do I need to follow same procedure as for installing CM for the first time i.e flashing CM, and then flashing GAPPS again?
Also, I have non-touch CWM recovery and I downloaded the touch version from CWM website, but I'm not sure how to do it, is it done with regular Odin via PC , or with something called "Mobile Odin"?
If you want to flash a newer nightly, you can either perform a clean flash or dirty flash. Clean flashing means you wile your data and flash cm along with Google apps again and start fresh. Dirty flashing means you just wipe your cache and dalvik cache and flash cm on top of the old cm which allows you to keep your data. Research both and decide what you prefer.
As for cwm, simply flash the new touch version in cwm and it'll overwrite the old cwm nontouch.

Thanks, I have last question regarding flashing new rom:
I flashed CM, but then I separately flashed GAPPS, so I dont know if GAPPS will be removed when installing new rom, or do I need to manually remove GAPPS before flashing new rom?
I hope you understand what I'm trying to ask :silly:
If you're dirty flashing, you don't need to reflash Google apps. However, if you're clean flashing then you are wiping everything so you'll need to reflash Google apps.
You don't need to remove it or anything before flashing the new rom. If you feel more comfortable flashing it, you can because it'll just overwrite your old Google apps.

[Q] Unfortunately, the setup wizard has stopped

I need help stuck in error message.
Phone: Verizon Galaxy S3 Sch-i535
Ok Heres what it did
(Phone already rooted)
I Downloaded and Flashed a Custom Rom from goo. manager (Samsung Galaxy S III (Verizon) CyanogenMod - d2vzw / cm-10.1.2-d2vzw.zip) and The gapps that came along with it.
Also downloaded Ez unlock to unlock my boot loader. (unlocked the boot loader)
Phone was successfully flashed with the new CyanogenMod, everything booted up fine. But when the phone starts to setup, i get an error message saying: Unfortunately, the process com.process.gapps has stopped.
i click ok and it keeps popping up.
Also between that error message I get another error message saying: Unfortunately, Setup Wizard has Stopped.
Can't access any part of the phone. Just stuck in the error message loop.
I do however have access to the recovery mode options that let you Install, wipe backup restore, mount, settings, advanced, reboot.
PLEASE HELP
You flashed the wrong gapps. Just boot into recovery, wipe, flash only the rom, then find the correct gapps, download them, boot back into recovery, flash new gapps, reboot system and you should be good to go.:good:
Don't flash roms in goo manager. Learn to do it the right way.
What is the correct gapps for rootbox 4.x and why is flashing gapps necessary? Should the wipes be done before the gapps or after?
I had the same problem as hesbordofallofus and managed to get back into TWRP and flash my old 4.1.1 rom. I'd like to check out a 4.2.2 or 4.3 vanilla rom. Clean rom 5.5.1 works well but uses battery up fast.

and what is "The right way" ? i only used goo manager because i have a mac and it's a little bit more difficult to flash a samsung Device with a macbook pro.
The problem with goo manager is that, obviously there's a chance you're going to flash the wrong gapps. I don't use clockwork mod recovery because when I rooted my phone with CASUAL it installed TWRP. But, I assume they both work the same way. When you flash files from recovery, you have to manually download the rom and gapps packages from their respective servers so as long as you've done the reading and the quadruple checking, you will flash the correct files for YOU'RE phone. Learning how to boot into recovery manually, using the three button combo is a very important part of flashing roms. And getting comfortable moving around in whatever recovery you're using makes it less likely that you will make a fatal mistake.
I probably spend an hour or two reading in my phones' forum everyday. I want to make sure I understand how to do what I'm doing properly and have a plan for when things go wrong. So read, read, read!!!!!

the gapps package is necessary because the package is a set of apps like the Play Store, Gmail, and other google apps. You can't sign into you're Google account without Gaaps. The process is always this:
1: wipe Data+ Cache
2. Install ROM (updater-script in ROM zip wipes system for u)
3. Flash PROPER GAAPS
4. Reboot
Remember "System" is essentially your Operating system. So don't wipe that manually unless you have a nandroid or a ROM zip as a backup. There is really no need to wipe system manually in Recovery because a the updater-script in a ROM zip always erases system for u. Just worry about formatting data manually before flashing ROM. Also remember when you flash a Gaaps package it gets installed to your system partition NOT Data. Just some info for you. Remember if you don't know how to do something ASK!! nobody is stupid here and no questions are dumb. If it keeps you from bricking your device then ask. Also READ READ READ! Always make sure you know what you r flashing and that it is meant for your device. The last thing you want to do is to flash a kernel or ROM made for a different version of ur device.

I'm not sure what you mean by manually formatting data. I'm also not really sure what you mean when you say don't manually wipe. My personal opinion is, when in doubt follow the dev's instructions. So for instance, when I decided on PACMAN, I went to the dev's page, scrolled down to the links to the downloads, grabbed that, then used link to the gapps, grabbed those, and usually right under the links, there's a brief set of directions for installing the rom/gapps. I always just do what they say. It's become a routine for me to research, pick a rom, grab the files, make as sure as humanly possible I've got them correct, make a fresh nandroid, then proceed.
When I say manually wipe I mean going into the wipe menu in recovery and choosing wipe data etc

"The last thing you want to do is to flash a kernel or ROM made for a different version of ur device." Done that!
So the reason I couldn't get all my apps (I could see them) or get into playstore, log onto google find my contacts, etc. is that I didn't flash the gapps. BIG QUESTION: how do I know which gapps to flash? (BTW I dropped back to cleanrom 5.5.1 and it works fine but I can't send texts. I receive but can't send.) If I could I'd give it a rest and do my real work.
Usually the dev posts the Gaaps package you need in the OP if their thread or on their site.

Totally wipe and restore Tab?

I am fairy new in this and would like to know if anyone can tell me how to do a full wipe and reset of this tab? I picked up a used one yesterday to experiment with. I already have 1 since long but never got to flashing it because of the brickbug thing. So it came with some custom 4.0.4 rom and I flashed JB stock onto immediately with odin but for some reason it seems sluggish and also rebooted itself once where all apps got deleted?!
I read that on stock ics doing any kind of wipe can brick the tab? Is still the same on jb? If not can anything please be kind enough to tell me how to go about completely cleaning everything out? It is to my limited understanding that just flashing a stock rom leaves all kinds of things lurking around underneath? Especially since considering it came with a custom rom on the previous owner my have flashed lots of things without properly cleaning up?
oh and I just got it rooted with cwm so that's done at least.
JB has been reported to be brick-bug safe.
Boot into recovery and factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache (in advanced) and reboot. First reboot may take a while, so be patient.
Setup and let the ROM "bed in" and build its caches.
Edit: if you still have troubles, do the above and also format system partition, reboot into download mode, flash firmware with Odin, and 're-flash the cwm recovery.

Thank you for taking the time to answer! This is exactly the kind of helpful info I was looking for.
Would I gain anything from flashing your kernel and is that something you would recommend that I do?

Of course, there's lots to gain or lots to miss out
There are many many features that improve it over stock kernel.
There are a couple small random bugs, but they are also reported to be present on stock kernel.
Please have a full read of my kernel Post #1 to #3 and decide for yourself if it's for you. I've also provided the stock kernel for flashing which I recommend to always keep on your device.
You can flash the kernels via custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) or ODIN.
As always, please read the disclaimer too.
Take your time, and make an informed decision on what best suits you
Edit: if you do decide to flash it, make sure it's the P6800 JB 4.1.2 kernel (NOT P6810 ICS 4.0.4). The are two different threads......

Help for for back-up and for new rom installation (newbie :) )

Hi guys, i have a completly stock OPO with CM13.1,
I never changed anything because personally I really like the CM roms, but now after learning that OPO will not be updated to Android nougat would like to install a new rom.
Browsing the forum I found the rom Tuga Power (http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/rom-tugapower-0-2rc-t3463157) who seems to have a few bugs, is already updated to 7.1 and has all the features i love about CM (such as themes).
Now since I have never done anything like that (except the flash of some recovery of stock updates), I need a hand for backing up (a good app that makes me put EVERYTHING safe), for installation of custom recovery (TWRP?) and flash the new rom and related Gapps.
Thanks in advance
The backup you're looking for a is nandroid backup which can be made in your custom recovery. If you have TWRP, just boot into recovery, select backup, select all the partitions, then start the backup. It'll take a couple of minutes and the backup will be about 5-7~ GBs so make sure you haven't enough space. Another type of backup can be made with the app Titanium backup and it's available on the play store. Your phone needs to be rooted and you need to have busybox installed, but the app will make a backup of all your apps and their data.
After you install the ROM, do a factory reset in recovery, wiping all partitions except internal storage. After that, follow these steps:
1. Flash your preferred firmware (241 is generally the recommended one)
2. Reboot into recovery.
3. Flash your ROM, then immediately flash your GApps package.
4. Do a regular reboot. The first time will take a couple of extra minutes.
5. After it's done turning on, reboot regularly one more time.
And done!
I recommend draining your battery to 0 and then charging it to 100 ASAP to recalibrate your battery, as this will usually give you better SOT.

You think that will be better then Tuga ? Reading on forum i think Tuga is One of the best in terms of Battery/bugs/usability
I've not had a lot of experience with Tuga, so not totally sure. CM 13 has treated me well (except for this time last year when there was a pretty serious spontaneous rebooting issue due to a modern change). Other than that, this has been my exclusive daily driver for a year now.
I don't expect CM 14 to be daily driver material out the gate, but I wouldn't mind being wrong about that ?. We'll see.

Yes, this tool will work to flash TWRP. But you will have to do the backup yourself, as I don't believe that tool supports that function.
But personally, I will recommend you do these steps yourself, as you will learn more about your device and will be able to pin point any errors or to familiarize your self with the process in case a tool is not available in the future.
