[Q] VPN question - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone have any insight into theworkings of VPN on the Z3 (or other Sony products)?
I have a Private VPN setup which connects perfectly with my Nexus 5 and Galaxy Pro 8.4, but using exactly the same settings, I just go from "connecting" straight to "disconnected."
Any ideas?

Not really an idea but I have been using (and still do) Vpn on my Xperia M and the Z3C to connect flawless to some AVM 7490 and 7360 routers. Setting are really exactly the same?

I think the settings are not not the same. The VPN comes directly nativ from Android.

use different config
i mean test both PPTP and L2TP
+ check your session in server side that you connect how many device simultaneously
this is my experience
I can connect pptp vpn on galaxy devices easy and stable But on Xperia l2tp works better!
(actually it doesn't make scene for myself but this what i see!)
:good:

Hhhm, these two I honestly didn't test. My connections (to the above mentioned AVM routers) are of type "IPSec Xauth PSK" which work flawless.

Unfortunately, my router (ASUS), which is my VPN server only has PPTP or OpenVPN options, and is buggy with OpenVPN. So PPTP is my only protocol using this solution.

IPSec / L2TP working on some Android devices, but not all

Hello forum,
couple of weeks ago I had success in connecting a Samsung Galaxy S to our corporate VPN (Cisco ASA) using L2TP/IPSec with certificate based authentication. Now I have tried to do the same with Galaxy GT-I5510 and Sony Ericsson XPeria X10 Mini Pro. GT-I5510 has Android 2.2, and XPeria X10 has Android 2.1. Both of these have identical user interface to configure the VPN connections compared to Galaxay S. But, either of these do not even try to open the connection when I try to enable it. Both simply say:
"Unable to connect to the network. Do you want to try again?"
I know that the devices do not even try to connect to the VPN server, because I have monitored network traffic on the server side. No packets incoming at all. Also, network browsing works, so it's not about data connections being disabled at the device or something like that. I have also tried it using my own WLAN, so it's not about operator blocking IPSec traffic either.
Does anyone have a clue what is wrong with these devices, why do they allow to configure an IPSec/L2TP VPN connection, but then do not even try to open it when activated? Is it possible that IPSec is somehow disabled in these non-high-end devices or something?
Sadly, I have to chime in on this. I got the Thunderbolt today, and found myself in a similar situation. Coming from an HTC Droid Incredible, I found that I cannot connect to my L2TP over IPSec VPN (I am, unlike you, using a PSK). However, I otherwise have EXACTLY the same issue: from my thunderbolt, which is configured identically to the DInc, I get the same error. I can browse to the VPN server from the Thunderbolt's browser, etc. and if I configure my Thunderbolt as a mobile hotspot, I can connect device to my Thunderbolt, then connect through the Thunderbolt to my VPN, but I cannot connect directly from my Thunderbolt to my VPN server.
Extremely frustrating. Hope you have found a solution.

FTP Client

My Mac is setup with a Static IP and I can use FTP on a PC or Mac but I'd like to access things with my Tab. What app do you guys like (hopefully free) that works well?

As a client, i use AndFTP. Free but sloooooooow. As a server you can't go wrong with FTPServer, also free and damn fast.
However... The tab has issues being seen on the network. At least mine does, lol. So this is what i do: i turn off wifi, let 3g get connected, restart wifi, and as fast as possible i get connected to the tab (after that the connection seems to be stable). As a client on the Mac i suggest Cyberduck that is free and works well.

[Q] No internet access while using an Ipsec VPN

Hello,
I'm not having much luck accessing the internet while my VPN is turned on. It's just a simple mesh network from logmein and I like it because I can ssh in to my raspberry pi to turn my PC on without opening up ports on my home network.
Let me know if any one else has had this problem/ they know a solution. Personally, i've never had any trouble on my Nexus 7, or my Galaxy Nexus with using the internet while staying connected to my VPN but both of those are using stock versions of android also.
Thanks in advanced.

Spectrum App Detecting VPN Connection

Hello all,
I setup OpenVPN so I could access my home network and view my TWC Spectrum subscription when out and about . The Spectrum TV app is detecting that im using a VPN and limits what I can watch.
I see in the past users on XDA developers removed blocks from the old app (APK) but im wondering if there's another way to hide the fact I'm using a VPN. I am using the default port (1194) but I'm wondering if changing that will help before I go through and do that.
Thanks.

i had the same problem so i just spoofed the ip on a different time warner cable / spectrum node
and gave me all channels
How does it detect VPN? By outgoing IP or by the settings? Spectrum TV is not the only app. Netflix does the same.
@legendofsounds can you please elaborate on how you got this working?

twc spectrum assigns you an ip address (DHCP) for your subscription so that ip is only going to work for your username and password for the spectrum tv app.
What i did is i logged in to my Netgear r6300 router settings and went to the internet tab i seen my ip address and copied the same numbers shown for
ip: x.x.x.x
subnetmask: 255.255.x.x
defaultgateway: x.x.x.x
i went to visit my family in another city/Node
and logged in to they're router settings and set a static ip with the same ip i had back in my house
once i hit apply settings opened spectrum tv on a roku logged in with my credentials and it worked like a charm.
NOTE: If you try this in the same city where modem A is it wont work because the ip will have a conflict problem
Thanks for clarifying!
This is an interesting work around (and one I'm surprised works).
However, it doesn't help the situation I (and I believe the original poster) are in. I'm able to log into the VPN running on a machine inside my TWC hosted network using my router or even an individual PC, and that works fine. I'm able to see all channels.
Problem is when I'm on my phone using a mobile connection (or wifi on a network that I don't have control over). I can connect to the same VPN on my phone, but the TWC app disallows use when it detects that the phone itself is connected to a VPN. So it seems that we need a way to connect our phones to a VPN without the TWC app knowing it's connected to a VPN.
Is there a working modified apk that disables the VPN check?

S8+ & VPN Issues

Anyone else having VPN connectivity issues with their S8+ ?
My AC88 Router hasPPTP & OPENVPN setup fine, I can access via my PC, Note 3 etc VPN & also Subscribed VPN to Europe, Americas & Asia etc without a problem.
On my S8+ it is only my routers OPENVPN via Openconnect App is working, I can neither access PPTP or Subscribed VPN. Always says in logs Authentication Failed. ( Yes I have redid the credentials to be simpler to still no avail & redid on other devices which work fine )
Am I missing some kind of security or lock mechanism on the S8+ ? Is the OpenVPN messing with the PPTP somehow?I can't seem to find any other info at this time.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Ditto
I'm having the same issue. VPN works fine on laptop and S5 but not on S8. EXACT SAME settings on both.
I have PPTP IPSec and OpenVPN configuration working on my S8+ 955FD. There weren't any additional settings that I am aware of.
