[Q] Music options - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
Just joined the forum to get some advice about possibly paying somebody to compose some music to go with my puzzle app me and a mate are looking at putting together. Im interested in how much I should expect to pay for around a minutes length of custom music! Were in chats with a guy called Rob Spooner who is an APP music composer who is clearly very good at what he does when you look at his website but I was wondering if anybody could recommend any other composers so I can look at all our options!
Many Thanks,
Gary.

I would suggest to look on linkedin for graduates who did Music production.
I personally heard about people who graduated this year and work as freelancers.
You can hire 1-2 people to work as freelancers with good price arrangements and it has its risks, unless you look for something professional and more certain then you pay a pro and get something pro.

LOL

you thought wrong.you are HelplessEver now...
soRry
do you now a funn and good quality game
Yeah! Return to the Mysterious Island - a very good game. You should definitely buy it!!!
do you hate me serius
Stop encouraging this guy by keeping his thread alive!!
Seriously, bestever, someone spent a lot of time and energy to create that game. Go buy it and show the programmer a little appreciation, rather than finding a cracked version and, basically, stealing.
How would you feel if you spent hours and hours and days and days writing a book, and you find a publisher and spend even more time - and lots of money, too - getting the book published, and as soon as it finds its way to the shelves, someone buys one, makes a gajillion photocopies of it, and started giving it free to everyone who asked. Suddenly you're not selling a single book - because everyone's getting it for free.
Wouldn't you be mad?
Seriously. Go buy the game if you like it that much.
You are joking, right?
I really find interesting everybody's opinion here, especially when considering the fact that all posts belong to a forum which is well known for it's illegal roms...
So, if I want a WM6 device I should buy one right? I shouldn't upgrade my old WM5 device, as by doing this I am not respecting the authors (aka programmers) of the new OS nor the producers (aka manufacturers) of the new devices. And they don't make profit anymore, as I don't have to buy a new device, since my old is upgraded. For example, my old Prophet runs on EXACTLY the same hardware as the Elf. But I don't have to buy the Elf anymore. Is that what your are telling us?
Great. Let's shut down this forum
The truth is that games & software are way too expensive. If they kept the prices in reasonable limits then we wouldn't consider cracking them...
i think booth have right in somewais

Actually, there's a difference here. If "bestever" wanted to get a copy of the game with developing in mind - maybe create a new game based on the same engine or something - then there wouldn't be a problem. This is xda-developers.com, where people collaborate to develop new software solutions for our smartphones and pdaphones. The developers post their creations so that the masses can download, install, and essentially beta-test them. It's an intellectual exercise, and if a few people just download WM6 (for example) just for their own personal use, that's okay, the developers here don't seem to mind.
The game in question, however, was designed and is marketed as for-profit. The developer spent a lot of time and energy creating that software. If he spent a total of 40 work hours programming, editing, compiling, testing, reprogramming, and fixing bugs in this game and sold it for 20 bucks, he's making 50 cents an hour. He'd have to sell 15 copies just to hit minimum wage.
If bestever wanted to get a copy of the game to use it as a template to design his own, that's fine. At least with me. But he just doesn't want to pay for it. There's a word for that - "stealing".
On top of all that, the programmer of the game in question is not a bloodsucking monopolistic corporation worth billions of dollars and doing everything possible to squeeze every last red cent they can out of the average Earth-dweller. Whatever issues I may have with people and their illegal software downloads comes to a halt when I reach Microsoft. I don't like them, I don't like the way they do business, and I think they deserve what they get. The only reasons I use Windows PCs is because they're industry standard anymore, and I grew up using them long before I developed any sense of politics - I started at age 6 with Win3.1. The only reasons I use a Windows Mobile device is because of the huge third party app support, vastly superior abilities compared to your garden-variety cell phone, and the prohibitive cost (and lack of third party support) behind the iPhone.
If the developer of the game wanted it to be free, he'd be distributing it freely. If you like the game that much, show the developer some support and PAY FOR THE GAME. Otherwise, the game might not even exist.
I won't argue with you that the cost of games and software is way too expensive. I don't want to pay over 200 bucks for an operating system for my computer, but I don't know crap about Linux, whereas I'm very proficient in Windows (2k, XP, 2k3S, etc.) But here's the rub, and in order to be properly understood you have to be completely honest with yourself. If money wasn't a problem, if instead of making 25k/year you were making 250k/year, would you still be cracking software, or would you be buying it?
Alright guys. Let's all take a deep breath here. The age-old question of warez, and cracks and hacks won't get answered here.
If there are any moderators in sight, please delete this thread, It is totally off-topic, and should never have been allowed to propagate.
sorry for starting this

Mobile Adult Content (no not real content just concept)

Well it looks like this is being resurrected, in a month or so I am going to be given the option to pitch this idea after I do the proper market research. So if anyone is in the biz or has some numbers they could throw out me please do. I won't really be hitting the books (so to speak) until we finish a special project we are currently working to launch. If your interested in the pr0n watch this thread!

what does this have to do with xda-devs general discussion...smells like spam...but you have 111 posts,so...not sure
Should it go in Development? It isn't developed yet, and I can assure you it is not spam. I work for one of the largest providers of online Adult content in the world.
I had posted something similar about creating a Win Mo program for streaming content before but now that I actually have a definitive answer on going to pitch it I was just getting my ducks in a row.
I just put it in General since I wasn't sure where else it would go, especially since I am kind of looking for market research resources.

well i assume it will have to be payed...and we don't sell anything around here,i think...so i'd suggest moving to off-topic at the moment
Possibly pay, possibly not. Either way if some help they could be beta testers which would be free (I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS DEFINITE SO DON'T SEND ME PM's YOU PERVS). Also just for the record I have never advertised the company I work for.

just wanted to see where would this lead
but for this kind of mobile usage....thanks not
there are better things to watch on the ppc
i mean to work for a company like that, man you could have found a better job
this is just my opinion,so no hard feelings
Your opinion. I love my job, for the record I do not do any programming what so ever just building tutorials and flow charts.
i think the market/demmand is probably theire...not sure tho it's hard to say i mean when would you really have time to watch that on a mobile...it's not something you can just watch while riding the bus or plane...and if your at home just go on pc plenty of it out theire...interesting idea non the lest tho...good luck....
Yea the one thing I could see a major advantage of is having a TV out on your phone and using that to watch it. You then could by pass the nagging wife, girlfriend, boyfriend who snoops around your PC trying to catch you.

Apps for the Hearing Impaired and Deaf

Hey all, this is my first new thread outside of my home, the CDMA Hero forum, lol. Be kind
I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations, reviews, or information on apps or utilities that help the deaf or hearing impaired on Android?
The reason I'm asking is I'm trying to write up a guide or editorial on the state of Android's disabled-friendliness. Hoping to generate some good buzz on it and inspire people to keep developing unique ways of helping the disabled use their handsets more easily.
Anyway, thanks in advance and all that.

P.S. would it be okay if i post suggestions as to what kind of apps or features that might be useful for the deaf or hearing impaired? i don't have many but what I do have, i would love to see. if only to see if there is already an apps for it.

That would be fantastic. I'd really enjoy that kind of discussion.
I am not deaf myself but have a vested interest in any and all adaptation of Android to suit the disabled.
Recently an Android news site/community asked me to do some freelance op-ed writing for them and this is one of the topics I'd like to pursue, too.
If a discussion can start here and inspire some developers to create new apps/utilities to help the disabled then great! (=
phone fusion visual voice mail converts your voice mail to text message, if thats what kind of thing your looking for.
on the other side of that, handcent sms will read you your text message... neat thing when my girl checked the popup and accidently pressed that, we were both like wtf

the number one thing for the deaf with android phone that would be extremely useful is an android based ip-relay service. Currently Blackberry is on the top with this having 2 relay app for it (info linked below). Sidekick also have the same relay apps.
I've once had a Blackberry Pearl (8100) and this was absolutely essiental for the deaf person like me to be able to call for cab or order out or for any situation that would require me to be able to contact hearing.
ip-relay,
http://www.ip-relay.com/wireless.php
siprelay,
http://www.siprelay.com/mobile_solution.aspx
Other than this for the deaf, accessibility to messages is absolutely essential. I'm still looking around at the IM apps for android seeing i've just installed XDANDROID 2 days ago. Essentially what i'm trying to say is that deaf peoples requires IM applications even more than anybody else that I've known. And sometimes (like for windows mobile), it's hard to figure out which one is the best and worth the price. The simple solution to this is a side by side comparison for all of the mobile IM app for the android here. (i'm only mentioning this despite it's not being an app or feature request but it would really help peoples in general figure out which to get for their need).
The default txting setup on android seem more than good enough for the deaf anyway so that's no real worry.
Thanks, I hope to see good result out of this especially the relay app!
Good luck, Is_907!

I am an ASL terp. I can understand the need for visual awareness. In my opinion one of the better apps is Handcent. LOTS of options. Google Voice is another good option to change voice to text.
Let me know if I can help any other way \!,,!
I actually had been wondering if any hearing impaired Android-fans were using GV for the voicemail transcriptions. Good to know it's been thought of already!
Oddly enough, I've never used Handcent. I'm going to have to go through it and see what features it has now. It's just interesting to put myself in the mindset of a user who can not use some of the features that I take for granted.
- What would all of you say is the best thing Android has for deaf users? (We've already talked a bit about this.)
- More importantly, what do you think is the worst thing about using an Android device, as a deaf or hearing impaired person?
On AndroidAndMe.com someone started a thread asking how to remove a lot of the audio-related software from Android. I thought that was a really interesting idea, and something worth writing a guide on how to do.
This guy wanted to remove the Music app, Amazon MP3, Dialer, and a few other things that absolutely required the user to be hearing.
He wanted to clear these things out to leave storage space for more useful applications and utilities. Really got me thinking.
@Deafcyclist and @softwaretech:
Would you two mind if I PMed or emailed you some interview-type questions on this topic?
---
@Deafcyclist that's so awesome, I ran tech (sound, ironically) for the play version of The Miracle Worker in college and we had a whole team of ASL interpreters, one shadowing each actor. During that production we had a lot of talks about the deaf community and how to make the play accessible for them. Gallaudet was mentioned quite a bit.
If you wouldn't mind finding someone there who specializes in tech that would be fantastic. It wouldn't surprise me if the university's IT department had resources or people specialized in this area.
So far all I've been able to find about Android for deaf users is stuff about data-only plans from cell carriers. (Btw, Sprint has the cheapest and easiest option. Surprised me.)
I haven't really found anything about apps or utilities designed for deaf users yet.
I know I am kinda late but I found this thread searching for an IP-realy app for Android...anyways
First I don't think the music apps on the phone are useless. I go to Gallaudet and alot of people listen to music as well do I-- more so the beat then anything but yea.
Second, I contacted all the major IP relay companies: Sprint, i711/Purple Communications, IWrelay, etc about creating an Android App. I think if more people were to contact them then they would probably get to making an app much quicker.
AIM is ok to use but I have yet to find a stable, decent AIM app in the market. BeeJive finally released their beta version which is actually one of the better IM apps. I used it on my Blackberry and it never failed me.
I am actually rather suprised that Sprint hasn't released a major app for the Android Market yet since they have a few Android phones and they created SIPrelay for Blackberry. They are often on campus trying to sell us Sprint phones with only relay and data so why not release the app to all users?!?!
Fring or Qik have the possibility of working for deaf people but you need a phone like the Evo with a front facing camera first.
All in all i think relay is the only way that Android hasn't addressed the deaf/hoh community. I think most of the phone are pretty deaf friendly, when I use the phone it effortlessly connects to my hearing aid BT. Which is something I could never find in the million other phone makers I've had.
What about a TTY app
What a great thread. Thanks for posting the initial question. How does your article look? Do you have a link?
I know that everyone has mentioned ip relay as a valuable app but what about TTY for direct calls? Would this be valuable? Wouldn't it be nice to communicate directly with folks and organizations via text? I am asking because my company is considering creating this kind of tool for the Android OS.
Thanks.

TTY software would be fantastic. What company is this?
Hi,
my girlfriend likes to be active as a deaf person, asin sports and adventuring.. i want to communicate better with her on the phone, and looked into Blackberry, but, she wants android (no iphone/blackberry ATALL), she is also a great coder, and, i can coder alittle c++/c also.
I am wondering why has no one made a ROM for Hearing Impaired, ie: incorporate some of the ideas posted here, into one phone rom ? I know this maybe hard between versions, she likes to ride BMX sports bikes,is very active, so am looking for something wich 'has it all for her.
I currently own HTC Dream G1a 3.5g phone, she currently is waiting for the best phone but, pssibly only need a customised rom? Any help would be great.Thanks.
xd-
I think that's a great idea xd- I'm not deaf but briefly dated a deaf guy and saw how important texting is on a phone. A customized ROM would be great. I think more people need to be coding for apps that would help the deaf and hoh. If I was a developer I'd certainly work on those kinds of apps.
Webcaptel App
Sprint's Webcaptel is my "relay" service of choice. I can speak but cannot hear at all- late deafened adult. I prefer to speak into the handset directly to the person I've called and read their reply on the computer screen. It would be great if they made an app like this. First of all because I wouldn't be mistaken for a telemarketer like I am when I use standard relay (IP Relay, etc) and most importantly because it would make calls twice as fast since I wouldn't have to type out my half of the conversation. Check out SpringCaptel.com and harrassthem until they have a SprintCaptelApp please!
Jula
VRS apps,
MainstreamVRS for HTC Evo 4G, SprintVRS for Epic, ZVRS for Epic & MT4G.
DeafNote
A friendly communications tool when a deaf user needs to communicate, he/she may simply type down and enlarge the text into any size comfortable enough for a reader to read.
Deafies, please expect more VRS apps coming out this year (other than the listed above), this should be beneficial to the deaf community with broader available services at their disposal.

InterRupt - App dev freedom :-)

I'm not here to only promote my app. I'd prefer to open a much broader discourse re the freedom app development can bring, about the Android platform and development framework and other such things. I'm new to the XDA forums... you'll understand why if you keep reading.
I crafted my first Android app over the past few months. I've got a couple of old skool Symbian apps - one of which stayed in the Ovi store top 30 for well over three months (although that's not too impressive really). I really enjoyed learning Java and Android. I'm a (embedded) C++ geek and have never bothered with Java before now.
I gotta say I like it. I found both Java and Android easy and the development cycle fast. Not saying I've mastered it or anything like that it as I've only spent a couple of months working on the platform and language so far. I think the results are pretty impressive considering the effort (link below).
The story of my app creation might be interesting for a couple of reasons but it might also might bore you to tears... developing apps can bring freedom from the office cubicle. You can leave those Dilbert days behind And I don't mean swapping the office for a bedroom. I coded this app (and others) from a hammock on the beaches of Asia.
I live and work in Europe, on contract, in Spring/Summer/Autumn and beach bum in Winter. I've been doing this for years (missed 4 years in 14) and I'm always surprised how few other I meet on the road. I meet lots of fishermen, builders and tradespeople who take off annually - work in winter can be scarce. The coding profession lends itself pretty well to this lifestyle (I know this lifestyle isn't for everyone) but very few do it. I've met a handful of Israeli coders who traverse the beaches of India during the winter but that's about it.
Starting a app without internet access on remote beaches can be challenging but the samples in the Android SDK are pretty good. I used these as the base for my code. The documentation provided me with a reference for everything else I needed. I gotta hand it to Google, they've done a great job here.
I like to think the app stands out from the crowd in a couple of ways (but maybe I'm like a delusional parent ;-)). I like my UI. I paint and used to create my own comics as a kid. I've had a couple of "wow, what's that?" comments while testing it on the road. Also, there's no other app on the market that does the same thing; no competition.
I know this is kinda controversial and say the Android UI framework is just OK. When I compare it with something QT it's lacking. I guess that I believe that the test of framework is how easy it is for a coder to mould into whatever they desire. A great framework is like virtual plasticine. The Android framework is good but not great. I'd suggest the QT framework is great but I can only compare against what I've used previously. By the way the old Nokia frameworks were terrible.
So what does my app do? InterRupt measures the background noise and when a noise breaks (is louder than) the background noise it routes it through to the headphones. You can decide how much greater the noise has to be before you hear it in your headphones. It makes cycling and jogging safer when listening to music/podcasts/internet radio/etc. And it's a good solution for listening to music at work (read hammock)... which I do all the time. I can now hear my colleagues (other beach bums) speak to me ;-).
You can test my app on the market. There's a free trial - search for InterRupt.
I'm happy enough with it. But I guess like every coder, I see the faults in my own work and what I would do differently. Now, it's onto the challenge of promoting the app and this is where I don't have a clue. Any advice would be welcome. I'm now back in Europe and have internet access again.
I really like the idea of this.
Sent from my glacier using XDA App
Any advice on promoting an app?
Dude, it's a crowded market. So much so that it's no longer a meritocracy.
It seems dev's launch apps into oblivion and gotta find a way of bringing it to life - not an easy ask.
My app now disappears so far down the list that it takes literally five minutes to scroll to the app in the Audio category... ouch! That's after one week.
I've added a trial version and I've contacted some bloggers and Android sites that accept apps for reviews. A couple of guys have contacted me from these sites... really nice guys I gotta say.
How do most Android dev's get noticed in the crowd?
Should I choose another category? Is Audio more crowded than most?
All options and thoughts are welcome. Thanks dudes.
First of all, i have to say this is a very interesting app...i'm gonna try this as soon as i finish this reply.
i think xda is an amazing place to get started and to receive good feedbacks about how to really improve your app before advertising ....
and as for ideas.... i think a cool minimalistic website. Make sure your friends "Like" it... and that should atleast get you started ...
Thanks for the SolidKundi,
I haven't added InterRupt to my website, I had planned to do it this weekend. But it still doesn't help get word out there... people need to know the site. It's kinda the same problem.
Is it worth doing a PR launch? It seems expensive and I'm not sure if it'll get lost in the haze. I guess it might get some Google news rankings. Has anyone tried this before?
Paid apps are not allowed unfortunately.

Need help with Facebook Sized project.

Hi guys. My name is Joseph Truax, and I am working on an Android Exclusive Social Network.
We have a prototype, that my project manager has made for us, but, he needs money to get our working product started. $15,000 gets the app made.
I am looking for someone, or a few someone's, that would be interested in taking on this task for equity.
We have valued each 1% of equity at $11,666. For the work that you would be doing, I will offer at least 3% of the products equity, or, 1.5 million shares of stock.
I would just need you to follow the guide of our prototype. I have almost all the questions that you may have, answered.
This is a mash up that we are creating. We have consolidated some very popular websites, into a simple and easy Social Media, that replaces having to go and check 8 different sites.
We really need someone that would be interested in being part of the next huge service. What we have is really awesome, and will be around for a nice, long time.
The final thing, Facebook is where you go, to talk to the friends you have. Our network is where you go, to MEET new friends. I am pretty sure, that you will absolutely love it. Thank you guys, for your time.
